What action cameras did we choose?

When choosing an inexpensive action camera, we limited the purchase budget to 10,000 rubles, which led us to a list of 18 models according to Yandex Market. From this list we have selected the most common cameras that can be bought in at least several online stores and which entered the market some time ago.

The confrontation came down to a battle between Chinese manufacturers Xiaomi and SJCAM

As a result, in the economy segment we chose, the entire confrontation came down to a battle between Chinese manufacturers, in particular to the three most common models: Xiaomi Yi Action Camera, SJCAM SJ4000 and SJCAM SJ5000 in all their modifications, of which, by the way, there are not so few. The SJCAM line of cameras caused strong controversy for us, since it was difficult to find adequate information about the differences between the models even on the official website (for example, the SJCAM SJ5000 Plus model we chose, which is successfully sold in all stores, is not at all on the manufacturer’s website).



Hundreds, if not thousands of different mounts and accessories have already been produced for action cameras.

Some of you may be wondering if it would be better to look at previous generations of devices from the market leader - GoPro cameras or Sony cameras? The models we have chosen, in terms of their characteristics and the quality of the resulting image, are just at the level of GoPro Hero 3 and even the more modern GoPro HERO, with the difference that Chinese action cameras will really save your budget. The average price for GoPro HERO and HERO 3+ Silver Edition is 18,000 – 23,000 rubles, and the regular Hero 3 is no longer on sale.

Please note that, as always, you get exactly what you pay for. Miracles don't happen, unfortunately. When saving your budget, you must understand and accept the fact that equipment for 5,000 rubles and for 25,000 rubles are slightly different things both in terms of the quality of the materials used and the stability of their work. The camera is equipped with a 16 megapixel sensor from Sony with backlit matrix and a lens with an F 2.8 aperture, which has a positive effect on its ability to shoot at poor lighting(certainly not as good as the more expensive latest models from GoPro and other manufacturers). The lens has a 155-degree field of view, which means everything in front of the camera is included in the frame. The photos come out quite good for an inexpensive action camera, detailed, with correct colors and shades.

We have big complaints about the quality of sound recording, except for the fact that it cannot be used anywhere else for amateur photography. And for an amateur, depending on your luck, in a noisy place you will hardly hear yourself even at arm's length. On the other hand, sound is rarely recorded on action cameras, especially when it’s inside an aquabox, so we don’t consider this a serious drawback.



With Xiaomi Yi you can be confident in your photos.

You have all the necessary shooting modes at your disposal, the settings for which can only be changed by connecting the camera to the phone. For photography, these are single frame, burst shooting, timer shooting and time-lapse mode. For video shooting, after one of the latest firmware, it is possible to set the resolution to 2K (2304 x 1296 pixels) and 30 fps, which is good news, plus this same update increases the video bitrate to 21 MB/s. We don't mind, the higher the bitrate, the more details The camera manages to record. Previously, the maximum available was 1920 x 1080 at 60 fps, which is still the optimal setting.

The battery lasts for about 100 minutes of shooting at 1080p

The battery has a capacity of 1010 mAh and lasts for about 100 minutes of shooting at 1080p. As with all other cameras, if you are going to be without power for the whole day, then you should buy at least 1 more battery or consider an external portable Power Bank.

Xiaomi Yi Action Camera is great suitable for those who don’t want to spend a lot of money on the popular GoPro, but still want to take photos and videos of their adventures, scuba dive, attach it to a parachute, snowboard or quadcopter, ride a bike or surf. This is not to mention ordinary walks around the city, gatherings with friends, in a cafe or bar. We see this camera as a good alternative to more expensive models and specifically for amateur use. The main feature of using Xiaomi Yi is the absence of an electronic display. Not to say that this is such a thing a big problem(all previous generations before GoPro Hero 4 Silver and other manufacturers did not have such a screen), but it still leaves its mark on your shooting. To see what exactly is in the frame and in general to change any video/photo settings, you will have to turn on Wi-Fi and go to the special application “YI Action - YI Action Camera”. After making the necessary settings and setting the desired field of view, it is advisable to turn off the Wi-Fi mode so that it does not waste battery power.



Officially, Yi has two configurations: camera only or camera + monopod. However, all stores often sell the camera with additional mounts and accessories.

Some users may be upset that by default the Yi is sold in a very meager configuration. In a beautiful and small box you only receive a camera with a battery and a USB cable for charging. For our part, we do not consider this to be any particular problem, since on the one hand, the camera can be easily purchased as a set with the necessary mounts and an aquabox, on the other hand, you can buy separately only the mounts and accessories you need. Keep in mind that the camera is not protected without a waterbox, and the GoPro frame and waterbox also do not fit it.



On the one hand, the Yi application is quite convenient, but on the other hand, the connection between the camera and the smartphone takes quite a long time, about 15 seconds.

Sergey Merkov, in his review on ixbt, complains about the feature we described: “An annoyingly long ups and downs with connecting the camera and smartphone, extremely inconvenient touch controls with the every second risk of accidentally swiping or closing a running application - all this in no way correlates with operational video shooting in the most complex conditions for which any action camera is originally designed."

Budget action camera with screen - SJCAM SJ5000 Plus

SJCAM SJ5000 Plus is the top model of the 5000 series cameras. It is equipped with an Ambarella A7 processor (exactly the same one installed in the GoPro Hero series 3 and 3+), which allows you to shoot video in 1080p at 60 fps, a 16MP matrix from Panasonic and a Wi-Fi module. In our opinion, this is the only camera in the entire line that is worthy of attention.

In terms of initial configuration, the SJ5000 confidently wins; in the box you will find an aquabox, a couple of adhesive pads for a helmet or other surface, the most commonly used mounts and an adapter for a tripod thread.



The main advantage of the SJCAM SJ5000 Plus is that although it is small and not touch-sensitive, it is still a full-fledged screen.

The strong advantage of SJCAM over Xiaomi is the presence of an LCD screen, thanks to which you do not need to connect the camera to your smartphone every time to change any shooting parameters or watch already filmed videos. Based on our experience, we can say that this is very convenient; it saves not only your time when preparing for shooting, but also charging the battery when the Wi-Fi module is working.



SJCAM SJ5000 Plus always brings the white balance to warm shades. Yi's colors are more realistic.

The difference between the cameras is clearly visible in the presented screenshot. In all the videos and reviews that we watched, the SJ5000+ greatly shifts the white balance towards warm tones. Its predecessor SJ4000 suffers from too cold colors. Xiaomi white balance works correctly, colors look natural, saturation and shades are all right.

We do not recommend shooting video in resolutions lower than 1080p, as the recording quality will be worse than in Full HD. It makes sense rather for fun and interest to watch slow motion at 120 fps. To work SJ5000+ with mobile application There are also complaints related to the slow response of the camera, delays when broadcasting images, and crashes of the application itself.

SJCAM SJ4000 and SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi

The SJ4000 is the very first model of action cameras from the SJCAM brand, which was announced as a cheaper alternative to GoPro. The main difference was that all models of this company had a 1.5-inch LCD screen and did not need to be purchased separately. All SJCAM cameras have richer equipment than GoPro or Xiaomi.

As for the shooting itself, things are much worse. The SJ4000 has a matrix of only 3.4 megapixels, so the 12 megapixels stated in the specifications are obtained by image interpolation, i.e. simply stretching the image to the desired size. This affects the quality of the frames; they are not sharp and have a lot of pixelation. With this camera, you can forget about cropping photos and videos (when only the area you need is cut out from the initial frame). In terms of image quality, Xiaomi confidently outperforms SJCAM.

Another trick from the Chinese concerns the stated 60 frames per second. They are also not real and are achieved by copying frames. The camera shoots real 30 fps, then doubles their number and gives you supposedly 60 fps at the output.

SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi is different from regular model SJ4000 only has a WiFi module, thanks to which you have the opportunity to connect the camera to your phone and control the shooting remotely through a special application.

The picture of all SJ4000 models can be recognized by the blue tints of the image, because they always push the white balance to the cold side. Because of this, to obtain warm shades, you will have to process both photos and videos in the editor. Not everyone is ready to do this.

SJCAM SJ4000 plus

SJCAM 4000+ was released in 2015, inherits all the functionality from previous models and is equipped with a new image sensor and a new Novatek 96660 processor, which makes it possible to shoot video in 2K resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels). Time Lapse and Slow Motion modes appear.

Otherwise, it remains the same camera with all the illnesses from the SJ4000: strange behavior when changing lighting, firmware glitches, bad sound and, most importantly, poor image quality.

SJCAM SJ5000 and SJ5000 Wi-Fi



The cameras are almost identical in appearance.

Exactly the same situation as with the SJ4000. The SJ5000 is a simple successor to the SJ4000 series without any changes, with the same processor and lens, but with an increased screen diagonal of up to 2 inches. SJ5000 Wi-Fi is the same camera with an added Wi-Fi module.

The only difference in this series is the SJ5000 Plus, which is a top model with a new Ambarella A7 processor (the same one installed in GoPro Hero 3 and 3+), a 16MP matrix from Panasonic and a Wi-Fi module included. In fact, this is the only camera that has improved in any way since the SJ4000, which is why we chose it as our alternative option for Xiaomi Yi.

Prolike 4K

The camera is not very common on sale, however, if desired, you can still find it in our stores or on Aliexpress. It is stated that this action camera is capable of shooting in 4K and 2.7K resolution at 30 fps, but we have our doubts about this. We found only 1 review on the OnFoto website, and even that one doesn’t look convincing. At a minimum, you can look at the quality of the video recording.

A lot of artifacts, no 4K

In reviews on Yandex Market there are completely opposite reviews, which adds even more confusion. Here is one of them, which is most likely closer to the truth: “recording quality in the evening or under artificial light: a lot of artifacts and a lot of grain. No 4K. FullHD just stretches. The sound recording quality is terrible. Worse than the listed Chinese SJCAM, gmini magic eye.”

As a result, we do not see any particular advantages of this particular camera over others, so we do not recommend it for purchase.

SJCAM M10 Cube Mini, SJCAM M10 WiFi and SJCAM M10 Plus



The M10 Cube Mini is a budget version of the GoPro Hero4 Session with all the shortcomings of the SJ4000 models.

The main feature of this line of cameras is their more compact body. It’s easy to understand what exactly they were designed to compete with. Yes, yes, exactly with the GoPro Hero4 Session. Exactly the same cubic body shape and minimalistic “design” from the Chinese manufacturer. In fact, the cubic shape is perhaps their only similarity.

The technical content is fully consistent with the SJ4000 models with all their shortcomings

All the technical components of these cameras are fully consistent with similar SJ4000 models, with all the attendant disadvantages: poor recording quality, blurred images and problems with correct exposure, especially with sudden changes in lighting conditions. The SJCAM M10 likes to brighten the picture so much that often any details in the sky disappear altogether.
