Finishing the arch with stone-like plaster. Arch finishing options: materials and technological nuances

Among the most popular elements for finishing openings, the arched corner should be noted. The protective element, which at the same time serves as decoration, is made in two types: metal and plastic.

Installation is not difficult, but has features that a person doing the work with his own hands should know. So, let's look at how to finish an arch with a plastic corner.

Important function of arched corners

The finishing corner has been used for many years to simplify repair work. It allows you to form corners and also protect the doorway. The main advantage of arched corners is the possibility of extending the service life of the finish, since with them the wallpaper will not break off at the corners and the paint will not be erased.

And if during the installation of an interior arch you need to plaster a corner made of chipboard or plasterboard, then an aluminum corner will allow you to display 90 degrees. Any home corner is subject to external influence, especially when it comes to arched openings– rearranging furniture or regular Saturday cleaning can damage it. There is a solution - glue a decorative corner.

Important! A perforated corner provides a smooth edge for a curved design. At the same time, the consumption of putties is reduced.

Thanks to perforation, the corner can be framed not only with clear lines, it can be bent and drawn into various shapes. The soft curved element makes it possible to design not only square or rounded arches into classic style, but also to create semi-arches, as well as openings with non-standard bends. Arch corners have the following advantages:

  • Affordable price.
  • Practical - can be used in most interior solutions.
  • Finish – produced in a wide range of colors.
  • Install decorative elements won't be difficult.

Necessary tool

The plastic corner for the interior arch must be properly secured. For this purpose, a list of such tools is prepared in advance:

  1. Plastic element to match the style of the room.
  2. Assembly adhesive.
  3. Liquid nails will help attach the element.
  4. Rubber mallet.

Important! Gluing decor using liquid nails is simple, but risky. Firstly, the plastic can be damaged, and secondly, a large amount of material used leaves greasy marks on the finish.

It is best to attach a bent corner using mounting adhesive or liquid nails, since installation with metal nails or self-tapping screws looks ridiculous and also increases the chances of cracks and chips.

Drywall is one of the most common materials for creating interior portals. It is lightweight, attached to the frame and makes it possible to draw internal and external radius corners. Since the material requires subsequent cladding, corners are used for ease of design. Glue for installation - putty.

Installation of decorative corners

Any apartment will look much more impressive if the edging of existing arches is decorated with plastic corners. Therefore, let's look at how to glue a plastic corner to an interior arch and make the frame durable and reliable.

There are two needs to use pvc part: stick and draw a right angle or paste over an arc. Condition for creating right angles:

  • Surface treatment with a penetrating primer solution.
  • Using a square, mark, mark and cut to the required size with a grinder.
  • Apply the adhesive mixture to two inner planes of the element.
  • Apply the strip, gently pressing it along its entire length.

The flexible corner for the arcuate arch is fixed in a slightly different way. Photos and videos will help beginners understand the differences and features of installation. Installing such an element yourself will be no more difficult than the previous option, but pay attention to the following nuances:

  1. The width of the sides of the corner when finishing the arc varies. The wide side is laid on the end corner of the arch, and narrow side presses against the wall.
  2. Silicone sealant or adhesive solution applied to the element, as in the first case.
  3. You need to fasten it with several nails - necessary measure, since the hot solution must set completely.
  4. Instead of nails, you can use masking tape to secure the edge of the plastic corner.

Important! Use at home or construction hair dryer to speed up drying is prohibited, especially if photo wallpaper or paint is used for the walls.

Corners for interior arches are easy to glue onto wallpaper. The finishing material quickly sets with glue and allows you to test your strength the very next day. But if you want to cover an arch with an MDF corner, then use these tips:

  • This type does not require additional fixation, but after applying glue to the corner and pressing it to the surface, wait a couple of seconds and then peel off the element again.
  • After waiting for the glue to thicken, you can safely return it to its place. Usually 1-2 minutes is enough.

It is better to use a wooden corner for arched openings made of the same material. It is difficult to bend, so you can glue it on straight planes. Ideal use is rectangular portals, where round element absent.

Interesting! Among the abundance of finishing elements, you can choose cork, rubberized, rubber corners. A rolled and flexible rubber corner is simply necessary in places where water hitting the surface makes it slippery. These can be glued to tiles and concrete if necessary.

It is also possible to cover the arch using ordinary plastic corners, but in this case the elastic threshold will be much smaller. In order to bend the product without damaging it to the right size, you should heat the material with a hair dryer.

For decorative design arches and walls, polyurethane and polyurethane foam are used - in this case, all surfaces must be smooth. If there are small differences, then you need to glue the elements together by gently pressing and increasing the amount of glue in these places.

She may have the most various shapes and be made from different materials. Just creating a door arch will not be enough; it still needs to be properly and beautifully finished. There are several options you can use for this. We must remember that in addition to giving the structure a beautiful and attractive appearance, finishing material can also protect it from damage, so its choice must be approached wisely.

The finishing of the arch should not only give it an attractive appearance, but also protect it from possible damage.

Dye

Painting is the simplest and most affordable method of finishing an arched structure, which is why it is very popular.

The advantage of this material is its availability and ease of application. It is enough to purchase paint and apply it to the prepared surface using a brush, roller or spray gun. To get a beautiful result, you need to apply at least two layers. The disadvantage of this type of finishing is that the surface must be prepared very carefully, and this takes a lot of time and effort. If there are any irregularities on the arch, then after painting they will be even more noticeable.

The arch can be painted to match the walls or in a contrasting color

  • There are two main options for this finish:
  • painting in the same tone as the wall, then the structure dissolves in the interior;

painting in a contrasting color, in this case the focus is on the door arch.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper is also a common option for finishing an arch. You can choose them to match the color of the walls or use a contrasting solution. Now liquid wallpaper has appeared, which is often used to decorate the arch.

To cover the arch, you can use regular, vinyl, textile or liquid wallpaper.

  • Advantages of wallpapering an arch: big choice
  • , so you can purchase material of the required shade and texture;
  • ease of installation; no special skills or tools are required to perform the work;

affordable price.

  • Flaws:
  • fragility. Even the most durable wallpaper is easily damaged, so you have to change it after 2–4 years;

discoloration. When exposed to sunlight, wallpaper quickly loses its original color.

It is better to purchase plain wallpaper without ornament. If the walls are covered with the same material, you won’t have to select a pattern, so the work can be completed easier and faster. To decorate the edges of the arch, you can use plastic corners. They will act not only as decorative elements, but will also reliably protect the corners from possible mechanical damage.

Tree Arch finishing natural wood gives the room style, solidity and beauty. This material goes well with almost any design solution

, but most suitable for finishing an arch in a wooden house. An arch made of natural wood looks especially stylish in combination with other wooden elements

Advantages of finishing an arch with wood:

  • the original presentable appearance is preserved for many years;
  • high finishing strength durum varieties wood;
  • environmental friendliness.

affordable price.

  • at high humidity even with additional protection, the tree is prone to deformation;
  • wooden structures do not tolerate temperature changes well, so finish the arch near entrance doors such material is not worth it;
  • heavy weight. Elements made of natural wood are difficult to install alone, so you need to invite an assistant and fix them securely;
  • high price.

If valuable wood species are used to decorate the arch, then usually decorative items They are ordered from specialized companies and installed by specialists.

If you have the necessary skills, you can decorate an arch with wood yourself.

MDF panels

MDF panels are a good alternative to natural wood. Can be purchased ready-made kits

MDF panels for arch finishing

  • This material consists of wood chips and, depending on the type of coating, can be:
  • laminated. The surface is covered with PVC film, which imitates natural wood or other material. In addition, such a coating increases the strength of the material;

veneered. The boards are pressed with a thin layer of veneer and then varnished.

  • Compared to natural wood, MDF panels have the following advantages: resistance to high humidity
  • and temperature changes;
  • ease of installation; no special skills or tools are required to perform the work;

light weight of the panels, which simplifies the installation process;

  • Disadvantages of MDF panels:
  • when delivering targeted strikes they are easily damaged;
  • under the influence of ultraviolet radiation they can change their original color;

service life is shorter than that of natural wood.

Cork Arches decorated with cork look beautiful. Panels with a thickness of 3 mm or more are made from it, covered on top with thin veneer and impregnated with wax. You can use cork in rolls, but in this case it is not always impregnated with wax. To give rolled products the required color, they can be painted on the front or back side. In addition, there are also cork wallpapers. They have paper base

with a thin layer of cork glued onto it. Often such wallpapers have a self-adhesive backing, which makes gluing them simple and quick.

The arch can be covered with cork wallpaper

  • Benefits of cork:
  • is not afraid of the impact of targeted impacts;
  • does not accumulate dust;
  • retains its original appearance for a long time;

affordable price.

  • afraid of moisture. If the surface has not been treated with wax, then at high humidity the material may become deformed;
  • absorbs odors well;
  • has a high cost.

Mosaic

More recently, in order to implement such a solution, people had to make a mosaic from broken glass or ceramic tiles. Now there is a ready-made mosaic on sale and all that remains is to glue it to the surface of the arch. There are usually no difficulties with performing such work, but since the elements are very small, finishing will take a lot of time.

Finishing a mosaic arch in a large opening will take quite a lot of time.

Advantages of mosaic:

  • large selection of shapes and colors;
  • moisture resistance;
  • strength;
  • high wear resistance;
  • long service life.

  • difficulty of performing the work. It requires not only certain skills, but also a lot of time;
  • high price.

Depending on the design style of the room, choose ceramic, metal orglass mosaic.

Decorative rock

The arch can be finished with both natural and artificial stone. The cost of natural materials is higher, so their artificial analogues are usually used for finishing. Since the weight of the stone is large, lay it on plasterboard partitions It’s not worth it, it’s better to do it on main walls. Instead of decorative stone, you can decorate the arch with tiles to resemble facing bricks.

If the arch is made in a main wall, it can be finished with stone tiles

Advantages of arch finishing decorative stone:

  • a large selection of materials that differ not only in color, but also in texture;
  • high strength;
  • good moisture resistance;
  • long service life.

affordable price.

  • complexity of installation. You must have certain skills;
  • heavy weight of the material, significantly increasing the load on the structure;
  • high price.

It is better to use small stones to finish the arch vaults, as they are much easier to lay.

Decorative plaster

There is quite a large selection different types plasters, so you can choose the one that will harmoniously fit into the interior of the room. Using this material you can create unique solutions, here everything depends on the imagination and abilities of the person finishing the arch.

Methods of finishing with decorative plaster are limited only by the imagination of the master

The store sells ready-made dry mixtures that just need to be diluted with water and can be applied to the prepared surface.

Advantages of decorative plaster:

  • allows you to create unique solutions that will be impossible to repeat;
  • you can create both a smooth and expressive relief;
  • if it is necessary to update the surface, it can be repainted;

  • low resistance to mechanical damage.

What tool will you need for the job?

Depending on what material the arch will be finished with, you may need different tools:

How to prepare the arch surface for finishing

Finishing the arch is a responsible and rather labor-intensive process. It is usually made from plasterboard. Experts recommend that such surfaces be puttied. This is due to the fact that if over time you want to update or replace the finishing material, in places where there is no putty, a layer of cardboard will be removed simultaneously with the finishing, and this can lead to damage to the entire structure.

The procedure for carrying out preparatory work:

  1. Smoothing the transition between the wall and the side surface of the arch. The joint is smoothed using putty so that the transition from one surface to another is not visible.

    The transition between the wall and the side surface of the arch is leveled and smoothed using putty

  2. Sealing seams and screw heads. For this, sickle tape is used, and the heads of the screws are sealed only with putty.

    Self-tapping screws and seams are sealed with putty

  3. Aligning the transition between the arch and the wall. For this purpose putty is used. It must be applied with a wide spatula; it must be wider than the overlap in order to obtain a smooth and even transition.

    The transition of the arched arc into the wall should be smooth and even

  4. Strengthening corners. One of the most problematic places door arch are its angles. To strengthen them, you need to use metal or plastic corners, which are fixed with putty or self-tapping screws. Instead of corners, the edges of the arch can be glued with sickle tape.

    The corners are reinforced with sickle tape or a perforated corner

  5. Putty arch arch. The entire surface is evenly covered with putty and leveled.
  6. Processing of side surfaces. This work must be done from top to bottom. The junctions between the wall and the arch are taped with sickle tape. The width of the tape should be such as to completely cover the transition point between the arch and the wall. After this, the side surfaces are puttied to completely smooth out the transition.

    The putty is applied to the sickle tape glued at the junction of the walls and the arch

  7. Final leveling of the surface. You can begin work only after the putty has dried. Grouting of the surface is done using sandpaper.
  8. Primer. To ensure good adhesion of the surface to the finishing material used, it must be primed. The primer is applied using a brush or roller. After it has completely dried, which will take about four hours, you can proceed to finishing work.

The described work should be performed with starting putty, since it has better adhesion and its price is lower. Depending on the finishing material used, it may be necessary to level the surface with finishing putty. This is required if the arch will be painted, in other cases it is possible finishing putty do not apply.

For elimination large differences and significant unevenness, the putty can be applied in several layers, the thickness of each of them should not be more than 5 mm.

  • Before applying the next layer, allow time for the previous one to dry thoroughly. Depending on the conditions in the room, the type of putty used and the thickness of the applied layer, the approximate drying time will vary:
  • plaster - 3–6 hours;
  • cement - from 12 to 24 hours;

polymer - from 4 hours. Expert advice to help you complete preparatory work

  • better quality:
  • When filling holes, it is recommended to apply putty a little more than necessary, since the solution tends to dry out a little. It is better to then remove the excess bump with sandpaper, and if a hole remains, then you will need to putty this place again;
  • When sealing joints, you need to press the solution well into the existing gap to completely fill it. In this case, it is also better to apply a little more solution and then sand it off, rather than carry out additional sealing when depressions form.

The sequence of finishing an arch with different materials

The order of work will depend on the selected material.

Wallpapering

To finish the arch, ordinary thin wallpaper or heavy vinyl, textile, and glass wallpaper.

The process of gluing an arch with thin wallpaper:

When using heavy vinyl wallpaper the edges of the strips are cut exactly along the border of the arch, and then this area is covered with a decorative corner.

Finishing with decorative plaster

Order finishing works:

  1. Applying plaster. This is done using a spatula. After the plaster has dried a little, it is lightly sanded with a paint float.

    Plaster is applied using a spatula

  2. To obtain a beautiful result when painting decorative plaster, you need to use several colors selected in the same range.

    First, darker paint is applied using a sponge and brush.

  3. A layer of darker paint is applied first.

    Painting with a second layer. You need to give time for the first layer to dry completely. After this, using a foam sponge, lightly apply lighter paint.

  4. The second coat of paint should be lighter

Wax coating. When the paint has dried, the surface of the arch is covered with a protective layer of wax mastic.

  1. When using a mosaic, the work is performed in the following sequence:
  2. Creating a matrix. Since the mosaic elements are very small, it is much easier to install if you first assemble them into small fragments. The elements are laid on a sheet of paper, and then a fine mesh is glued on top. There are ready-made matrices on a mesh basis, which can also be used to finish the arch.

    Mosaic installation. The finished matrices are fixed to the surface of the arch using glue. We must ensure that it does not fall on the front surface of the mosaic.

  3. The finished matrices are glued to the surface of the arch using glue Grouting joints. Select the required grout color and fill all the seams with it. An hour after grouting, remove the mortar using diagonal movements rubber spatula

    . After this, wipe the surface with a damp cloth.

To remove grout, wipe the surface with a damp cloth.

Laying decorative stone

  1. Preparing the stone. After purchasing a decorative stone, it must be washed and dried. To simplify the work, it is necessary to sort the elements by size, since they all have different lengths and thicknesses.
  2. Stone trimming. After the elements have been sorted, a special machine is used to cut off the edges of the stones that will be mounted on the corners to create a 45° cut. The tiles are sorted by color and then laid out along a straight line.

    The edges of the stones are cut using a special machine.

  3. Glue preparation. If the decorative stone will be mounted on a putty and primed surface, it is recommended to use quick-setting glue. When performing work on cement plaster It is better to use cement tile adhesive.
  4. Stone finishing. Work starts from the bottom and gradually moves up. A gap of 2–3 mm is usually left between individual elements, but installation can be carried out without a gap. To ensure that the distance between the tiles is the same, special plastic dividers are used.

    The stones begin to be laid from below and gradually move upward

Wood finishing

If you decide to decorate the arch with natural wood yourself, the easiest way to do this is with wooden lining:

Finishing with polyurethane moldings

Installation of moldings is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Preparation of elements mounted along the radius of the arch. Measure the required length and cut off a piece of molding. Nails are driven into it at intervals of 50–100 mm, after which glue is applied to the inner surface.

    Nails are driven into the molding and coated with glue.

  2. Installation of radius molding. The prepared element is placed in the center of the opening and a nail is driven in, after which they move from the center in different directions. If the molding does not press well at the bend, you can hammer in 1-2 additional nails.

    The molding is fixed with nails and pressed well against the surface of the arch

  3. Installation of vertical elements. The distance from the floor to the radius molding is measured in height and the required piece of the vertical element is cut off. It is also attached with nails and glue, and the junction of the vertical and radius molding is coated with sealant.

    Vertical elements are also attached using nails and glue

  4. After the glue has completely dried and the moldings are securely fixed, you can remove the nails. All that remains is to putty the moldings and paint them in the chosen color.

    Pull out the nails, putty, and then paint the moldings

If MDF panels are mounted with glue, then the sequence of work will be as follows:

If the panels are mounted on the sheathing, the surface of the arch need not be leveled:

  1. Creating a sheathing. For this they can be used metal profiles or wooden blocks.
  2. Installation of guide profiles. They are fixed at the top and bottom of the sheathing.
  3. Installation of panels. MDF panels are inserted into the guide profiles and fixed to the sheathing using self-tapping screws.

Finishing the wall around the arch

It is necessary not only to decorate the arch beautifully, but also to think about what materials the walls around it will be finished with.

The main design options for walls around the arch:

The sequence of finishing the walls around the arch will depend on the chosen material. This process is no different from how the installation was carried out finishing coating on the arch.

Installation of a decorative corner

A decorative arched corner not only allows you to highlight the arch against the background of the wall, but also hides possible irregularities. Its use is especially relevant when the arch was made independently and for the first time, so the work was not done perfectly.

The procedure for installing a decorative corner:

With the help of an arch you can decorate beautifully and unusually doorway, arched partitions allow you to zone the room. The presence of an arch in the interior makes it unusual and non-standard, but it must be organically combined with the surrounding elements.

A person with basic skills in performing construction work can finish an arch with his own hands. After the finishing material has been selected and everything has been prepared necessary tools, it is necessary to study in detail the technology of performing the work. By following the developed instructions, you will be able to finish the arch yourself and at the same time get a result no worse than that of the professionals.

Decorative stone is an excellent material for finishing both building facades and interiors. This material is easy to process, cut and drill.
He is easy to work with. However, to obtain an aesthetically good result, it is necessary to strictly follow the cladding technology.

Tools

First, let's prepare the tool.
You will need:

  • Construction mixer
  • Building level
  • Cutting machine or cutting machine
  • Putty knife
  • Bucket
  • Metal brush
  • Paint brushes
  • Rubber mallet
  • Trowel
  • Construction tape
  • Grout syringe
  • Household spray bottle
  • Wooden or plastic wedges of the same thickness

Consumables – making the right choice

You will also need consumables:

  • Adhesive for decorative stone

Our advice is that when purchasing glue, carefully read what is written on its packaging. The instructions must accurately indicate its properties.
For gluing decorative stones of different weights, there are different varieties glue. Therefore, first choose a decorative stone that suits you, then buy glue, and not vice versa.
Price in this case plays a secondary role, the main thing is quality.

Finishing arches with decorative stone suggests that in addition to laying the stone on a vertical surface, you will also need to cover the vault. In this case, a pull-out force will constantly act on the glued stone.
Therefore, following all recommendations for choosing the right glue especially important.

Important - when carrying out work on installing decorative stone at ambient temperatures below +5 degrees, it is necessary to use a certain brand of glue. Consider all this when choosing.

You will also need:

  • Grout of a suitable color
  • Primer

Our reference is a water repellent, a water-repellent composition for concrete.

Small addition. Many may have a question: what is the difference between hydrophobization and waterproofing?

The fact is that when waterproofing the walls are protected from moisture, but in turn they do not breathe. Hydrophobization not only protects walls from moisture, but also allows them to breathe.

Decorative stone finishing

Step one - surface preparation

The first and very important stage is competent and correct surface preparation.

Before laying decorative stone on the wall, it is necessary to carry out preliminary preparations:

  • Remove any leftovers old whitewash, paint or wallpaper
  • The walls must be leveled using putty
  • Prime the wall and arch. The primer holds together small particles of the wall and on such a surface any finish holds stronger

Our information is that primers for all surfaces are currently on sale. Choose what you need based on the material of your walls.

Concrete walls, especially monolithic ones, must be treated with a special adhesive primer “Betonokontakt”. At elevated temperatures or high humidity of the surrounding air, it is recommended to moisten the back side of the decorative stone with water.

Drywall arch - rules for stone finishing

Someone might be interested in how to decorate a plasterboard arch with decorative stone:

  • When laying decorative stone on drywall, it is recommended to use light grades of stone.
  • In addition, decorative stone can only be laid on gypsum boards indoors.
  • If your plasterboard arch is under a canopy and outdoors, you cannot cover it with decorative stone.

The surface of moisture-resistant gypsum board must be treated with a primer, after which it is necessary to allow the sheet to dry. Only after this can you begin installation.
It is convenient to apply the primer using a roller. At the same time, do not forget to prime both the outer and inner surfaces of the arch.

Proper preparation of stone tiles for laying

Do not rush to lay decorative tiles right away:

  • Mix stone from different packages.
  • Next, lay the stone on the floor.
  • Select the position of individual stones so that its texture looks as advantageous as possible.

For example, distribute it according to the shades of the color difference or place short and long elements in the masonry so that masonry looked more natural.

Checking the stone - what is important to know

Before installation, make sure that back side The tiles did not have a thin foamy layer, the so-called cement laitance.
If you find it, you need to clean the back with a wire brush. Do it.

Our information is that the presence of cement laitance significantly impairs adhesion. Your tile will simply fall off.

In a bucket, strictly following the instructions on the package, dilute the glue. Using a mixer, mix it thoroughly.
The mixture should be homogeneous:

  • Using a spatula, apply a layer of adhesive to the wall where the tiles are installed.
  • Also apply a layer of adhesive mass on the back side of the stone with a spatula.
  • Each layer, whether on a wall or on a tile, should be 5 – 10 mm.

Our advice is not to apply too thick a layer of glue, as this may cause the decorative stone to slide off the wall.

Important - the glue must completely cover the back side of the tile without voids. This recommendation also applies to the wall, on which glue is also applied. Everything should be covered in an even layer.

Internal voids can lead to the formation of condensation inside the masonry.

We lay the stone ourselves - competently and efficiently

So:

  • Place the tile in the desired location and press lightly.
  • Next, use a building level and a rubber mallet to level the stone.
  • Move it from side to side until it fits well against the wall.

Our advice is that finishing arches with decorative stone requires high-quality masonry. Therefore, during installation, tap the surface of the stone with the handle of a screwdriver.
This way you can determine if there are voids inside. If they are found, the stone must be dismantled, the glue cleaned off and re-installed.

  • Additionally, tap the surface of the stone with a mallet. If any glue comes out around the edges, remove it with a spatula.

At the same time, if there is glue left on the ends of the stone, you should not remove it, this way you will achieve better adhesion of the stone not only to the wall, but also to each other. Decorating arches with decorative stone in an apartment (see Arch in an apartment: transformation into a decorative structure) presupposes high-quality adhesion of the tiles to each other.

Masonry with jointing

There are two types of laying artificial stone:

  • With jointing
  • No seams

Decorating the arch with decorative stone with jointing is one of interesting options design. If you need just such a laying, you need to use wooden or plastic wedges during the laying process.
Select wedges of the thickness you require. After the glue has dried, the wedges can be removed and the seams can begin.
Joining the seams of decorative stone is no less an important stage work when finishing an arch or just a wall with decorative stone. The entire final result of such painstaking work depends on its competent and careful execution.

Grouting joints

The gaps between decorative stones should be filled with a special grout using a syringe.

So:

  • Fill the syringe with grout solution
  • Squeeze it out slowly and carefully fill all the seams.
  • It is recommended to fill the joints with grout so that it goes 3 - 4 mm inside the outer edge of the stone. This way you will achieve a pronounced relief of the masonry.
  • If you need to get a smoothed texture of the masonry, you can fill the joint with grout at the same level as the face of the stone.

  • After the solution begins to set, this is about 30 minutes, it must be smoothed out with a spatula or a special shaped spatula for jointing.

Our reference is that the time range we indicated is 30 minutes.
It all depends on the specific grout you purchased. Read the instructions carefully and carry out all work according to the manufacturer's instructions.

There is a large selection of grouts on sale that imitate the color and texture of real mortar. You can choose grout different color and shade, according to your taste and the requirements of the intended design.

We cover the arch - “correct” chips

Finishing arches in an apartment with decorative stone suggests that the stone will need to be cut to the required size. Many may have a question: how to decorate an arch with decorative stone without finishing the walls with stone?
It is necessary to understand that a cut, smooth edge of a stone at the junction of masonry and a smooth, unlined wall will not look entirely natural and beautiful.

A more acceptable result would be when the stone laid along the edges will have various chips. This will create the impression of naturalness and the effect will be more natural.

Decorative chips are quite easy to make using sawing and cutting tools.
To perform the correct chipping you must proceed as follows:

  • Using a knife, outline the main outlines of the future chip
  • All excess is bit off using pliers

Our advice is that you shouldn’t try to bite off the mark right away. You need to start from the edge, biting off a small piece.
Thus, everything unnecessary is removed according to the mark made. Otherwise, the stone may break in a completely inappropriate place.

  • Chip areas are corrected using a knife or file
  • Subsequently, to give the chips a smoother shape, they are processed using sandpaper
  • If desired or required by the design, chips may not be smoothed out. Everything is at your discretion

Decor - the finishing line

Upon completion of the masonry, small defects may remain, chips in unnecessary places, abrasions, end cuts and not entirely correct color matches.
All this can be easily fixed with an airbrush. In this case, it will take you less than an hour for your masonry to take on its finished shape.

The airbrush mixture is:

  • Tinting paste
  • Water
  • Acrylic lacquer

To give the stone the greatest relief and expressiveness, a finishing spray is applied to its surface with an airbrush.

In this case, it is necessary to apply spraying in such a way that the airbrush is at an oblique angle relative to the surface to be finished.
The color of the coating should be slightly darker than the color of the stone itself. If you want to get an unusual effect, you can add special metallic pigments, gold or bronze, to the mixture.
But you need to understand that this coating must be used in limited quantities, preferably at the ends of the stone. IN normal conditions

Our advice - upon completion decorative finishing and applying the finishing spray, we recommend that you coat the masonry with acrylic varnish.
This recommendation is relevant in active zones. Arches are just one of these zones. This will protect the coating from scuffs.

Use clear, matte or semi-matte water-based varnish. It can be applied using an airbrush or spray gun.

In a modern apartment, an element such as an arch is often used. Most often, doorways, as well as blind niches, are designed this way. An arch can greatly improve appearance premises, especially if it is carried out beautiful finish. What materials can be used to elegantly decorate an arched opening in an apartment?

If, when carrying out renovations in an apartment, it is decided to make an arch, then you will need to immediately think through options for finishing it. High-quality finishing can completely transform a doorway and make it the central element of the room. You can use a variety of materials for finishing, but if you plan to do the work yourself, then it is better to choose those finishing options that do not require special skill.

Here are some tips that will help you decide on the materials that can be used to finish the arched opening:

  • The decoration of the arched opening should be in harmony with the decoration of the walls in the rooms that it unites. For example, if the walls are covered with cheerful floral wallpaper, then you should not decorate the arch with brutal artificial stone;
  • the contours of the opening can be highlighted in a contrasting color in relation to the shade of the walls;
  • You can use ready-made arch elements made of plastic or MDF. In the latter case, you should choose MDF panels in color interior doors installed in the apartment;
  • elements of stucco molding made of polyurethane, which can be used to decorate an arch, go well with a classic interior;

  • The mosaic finish looks very nice, but such work is difficult to do with your own hands;
  • for high ceilings, the upper semicircular part of the arch can be closed decorative insert made of tinted or stained glass;
  • When finishing, you need to pay special attention to the corners, since this is the most vulnerable point of the structure. A rational solution is to trim the opening around the perimeter with a plastic corner.

Finish options

Let's consider how you can decorate the arch if you plan to do the work yourself. The most popular options:

  • wallpapering;
  • plastering followed by painting;
  • use of ready-made arched structures made of MDF or plastic;
  • artificial stone finishing.

Advice! When choosing how to decorate an arch, take into account the financial issue. If the renovation budget is small, it is better to opt for wallpaper or painting. If finances allow, then you can choose a more expensive option - fake diamond, mosaic tiles etc.

painting in a contrasting color, in this case the focus is on the door arch.

If the walls of the rooms are covered with wallpaper, then the arch can be finished with the same material. Here are some tips for choosing wallpaper:

  • It is better to choose plain wallpaper or material with a small, chaotically located pattern. When using wallpaper with a clear geometric pattern, it will be more difficult to combine the pattern when pasting the vault;

  • It is not advisable to paste over the arch with cheap paper wallpaper, since this coating is short-lived. It is much more rational to work with non-woven or vinyl-based material;
  • When using wallpaper, it is recommended to trim the arch contour on both sides with a plastic corner. This will extend the life of the finish, since in these places the wallpaper often peels up, which gives the arch a sloppy appearance.

Advice! When planning to wallpaper an arch, you should prepare a thicker adhesive composition(just add less water than required according to the instructions), this will ensure better adhesion.

When using thick wallpaper, the canvas is cut exactly along the opening. Thin wallpaper is glued differently. The canvases are cut out with an allowance around the perimeter of the arch 2.5 cm wide. Then the allowance is cut into “noodles” and, bending over the corner, glued to the arch. On last stage glue the strip onto the roof of the structure.

Plaster

The preparatory stage for painting and using decorative plaster is carried out in the same way:

  • it is necessary to carefully seal all the seams formed by the joints of the drywall sheets with sickle tape;
  • Using putty, seal the seams and places where screws are installed;
  • if you plan to paint, then you need to use finishing putty to level all surfaces, carefully drawing out the corners (for this, plastic corners are installed around the perimeter). When using decorative plaster, so careful preparation not required;
  • After the putty has dried, the surface is cleaned and covered with primer.

Then you can start finishing– painting or applying decorative plaster. In the latter case, it is necessary to create a relief using special rollers, a sponge, a stiff brush, etc. If decorative plaster without pigment was used, then after it has dried, the surface can be painted.

Decorative rock

This is a more expensive finishing method, but the result will be spectacular. As a rule, the arch of the structure and its perimeter are finished with stone. When using artificial stone tiles, it is not necessary to carefully level the surfaces. The main difficulty is finishing the curved surface of the structure.

Advice! When planning to finish a plasterboard arch, you need to take into account the weight of the material. If you use too heavy a cladding, the arch may become deformed.

Operating procedure:

  • preparation is being carried out - significant unevenness should be puttied, the surfaces should be covered with primer;
  • an adhesive composition or “liquid nails” glue is prepared;
  • the first tile is laid at the bottom of the arch so that its edge is at the junction of the opening and the wall;
  • then the masonry is carried out sequentially to the point of bending;
  • stones that are fixed along the arc must be cut, strictly maintaining the radius. The cuts must be carefully sanded;
  • After the masonry is completed and the adhesive has dried, you need to seal the seams using grout. You need to act carefully so that drops of the solution do not fall on the front side of the cladding.

Plastic panels

If you choose this finishing option, you will not need to putty or prime the surfaces. You can immediately begin building a frame for attaching the panels. The frame can be assembled from wooden slats, but you need to constantly monitor it using a level to ensure that the sheathing is level.

The slats are attached on both sides of the arch with glue or foam, installing temporary spacers that will hold the structure for the glue to dry. The panels are trimmed to give them the required form and attached to wooden frame stapler staples. Since plastic panels are quite elastic, they can be easily bent, giving the shape of an arch.

So, after the arched structure is ready, you need to think about finishing. The choice of option will largely depend on the stylistic decision of the interior. For example, for an antique or classic interior can be used polyurethane stucco molding, but for a high-tech interior it’s better plastic will do. You can also choose sophisticated finishing options, for example, mosaic tiles. If you need to choose a simple option, then you can simply cover the arch with wallpaper.

Unlike conventional interior doors, plasterboard arches look solemn, visually raise the ceilings and expand the space of the apartment. The plasticity of this building material allows you to cut out oval reliefs and all sorts of smooth curves from it, which so beautifully complement the interior. A variety of plasterboard arches, their features and design functions will be discussed later in the article.

Features of plasterboard arches in the interior

Drywall arches are three-dimensional structures that decorate openings between rooms in private houses, apartments, cafes, galleries, theaters, educational institutions and churches. They can be different diameters, narrow or occupying almost the entire wall, simple or unusual shapes.

The basis of the arch is metal carcass, to which curved drywall is attached. To give the material its shape, factory processing is used (production of arched blanks of the GKLA brand), as well as dry and wet bending of initially flat sheets. In the first case, cuts are made, in the second, the drywall is soaked in water, bent and dried in this form under a press.

The positive aspects of plasterboard arches are their aesthetics, ease of installation and low cost (compared to concrete, brick, and wood). Among the disadvantages, low resistance to humidity can be noted. In some cases, the disadvantage may be that the arched opening in the wall remains open, which means drafts, extraneous sounds, odors, and light will penetrate through it.

What forms exist

Reminiscent of ancient temples and Renaissance palaces, vaulted passages add sublimity to the interior. They are great for visual zoning of hallways, corridors, landings, living rooms, reception halls. The large number of geometric shapes that can be given to drywall provides the opportunity to choose perfect option for any type of interior.

Round arches made of plasterboard

Round and semicircular arches will harmoniously complement the classical, Greek, Byzantine, and Victorian styles. They should be decorated with plaster stucco, gold or silver ornaments, and the side parts should be made in the form of columns. The finish should be plain, white or a color very close to it.

Rectangular arches made of plasterboard

Such portals are very similar to doorways. This a good choice for minimalistic and modern interior. They can be part of partitions with shelves located on the sides, and, if necessary, even covered with sliding screens.

Elliptical arches made of plasterboard

Arches made of plasterboard, top part which are made in the shape of half a horizontal ellipse, are suitable for rooms with low ceilings (from 2.5 m). They fit well into styles such as modern, Provence, loft, country - you just need to find the appropriate frame.

Arabic / Oriental plasterboard arches

The eastern openings look like pointed domes. This type of arches is typical for India, Turkey and all Muslim countries. As an addition, jagged and wavy reliefs and complex miniature patterns in rich colors are possible.

Trapezoidal plasterboard arches

Arches with geometric angles look good surrounded by wood and stone, because these materials do not allow smooth bends. They are especially good for country houses, offices, pubs and libraries.

Curly arches made of plasterboard

Fantasy soft reliefs can become the highlight of an interior made in a futuristic, romantic or playful style. By the way, a plasterboard arch can not only decorate an opening in the wall, but also serve as a decorative frame around a niche.

Finishing plasterboard arches

After giving the plasterboard arch the desired shape, applying basic putty and primer, its appearance can be significantly improved with the help of decor. There are a great variety of finishing options, and among them you can choose any that suits the price and aesthetic qualities.

Painting

Helps achieve a glossy effect alkyd enamel, and the matte surface will be provided by water-emulsion and water-dispersion compositions.

painting

To apply drawings to the arch, you can use stencils, and if you have artistic talent, you can do them by hand. Techniques and materials in this case are limited only by the imagination of the master.

Stucco molding and PVC decor

Stucco molding, as well as inexpensive polystyrene foam products in the form of various shapes and lace will help instantly decorate any arch. Due to their low weight, they are easily glued to the plasterboard base.

painting in a contrasting color, in this case the focus is on the door arch.

Wallpapering is one of the most affordable ways to decorate arched structures. It will only require more skill and accuracy than on smooth walls - so that the seams are not visible.

Decorative rock

Natural or artificial stone will perfectly frame the opening, giving the interior a luxurious and complete look.

Wood veneer

The unique cut pattern of expensive tree species on a plasterboard arch will make a simple interior look elite with minimal financial costs.

Stained glass, glass, mirrors

Decorative slots can be filled with translucent or reflective inserts. This design looks elegant and creates a beautiful play of rays.

How to make a plasterboard arch with your own hands

To perform arch installation work, you will need the following materials:

— drywall (beginners should choose an already curved arched one (GKLA);
- metal or wooden profiles, plywood;
- screws, dowels;
- putty, primer.

Tools should be prepared measuring instruments(carpenter's square, tape measure), large compass, pencil, drywall knife, metal cutting scissors, screwdriver, fine-grained sandpaper for polishing edges, spatula, personal protective equipment.

Stages of work

1) Design. Based on the parameters of the room and the design idea, it is necessary to accurately determine the dimensions and relief of the future structure.

2) Calculation of materials. It is better to take more drywall and consumables than required. This way, in case of accidental damage, you can safely continue installation.

3) Cutting and fastening of profiles. The result should be a kind of frame suitable in width. They must first be attached to the concrete wall with dowels, and then fixed with self-tapping screws. Optimal distance between screws - 10-15 cm.

4) Cutting out plasterboard blanks, giving them a curved shape. You can clearly see this process in the video.

5) Sheathing of the frame. The diameter and length of the screws should be selected depending on the thickness of the sheets. After screwing in, their caps should be flush with the drywall so as not to create unnecessary unevenness.

6) Strengthening the structure. To do this, a curved metal profile is attached to the outer edges of the arch.

7) Alignment. At this stage, you need to smooth out the roughness, putty the surface and prepare it for finishing.
