Non-woven and vinyl wallpapers are especially in demand today. These types of wallpaper differ from each other in their properties, so each of these types has its own adhesive compositions. In this regard, some people who decide to change the wallpaper in their home have a question: “is it possible to glue non-woven wallpaper with vinyl glue?”

Differences between vinyl and non-woven

First of all, you should understand what non-woven and vinyl wallpapers are, and what their differences are.

Nonwoven

The basis of vinyl wallpaper is cellulose

The main component in the production of non-woven wallpaper is cellulose mixed with various binding additives, therefore main feature their ability to allow air to pass through. This allows the walls of the room to “breathe”, that is, such wallpaper does not interfere with free gas exchange.

They are also characterized by high strength and density, and therefore can hide small wall defects without the use of putty. Due to its durability, non-woven wallpaper is recommended by finishing specialists for pasting walls in new buildings.

They can withstand the shrinkage of the building without any problems, without deforming or peeling off from the base.

Non-woven wallpaper comes in two main types:

1. With non-woven surface.
2. With non-woven base.

Wallpaper with a non-woven surface can be painted

The first type has a structural surface that imitates plaster, or a decorative pattern is applied to the wallpaper surface.

Such wallpaper is intended for painting, which can be done up to 3 - 5 times. This option is perfect for those who like to periodically refresh the interior of the room.

To do this, it will be possible to do without the time-consuming process of removing old wallpaper and sticking new ones.

In the second type, non-woven fabric is used only as a basis for a decorative covering.

The surface is made of vinyl, silk-screen printing or even textiles.

This type of wallpaper can also have either a smooth or corrugated surface, but unlike the first type, wallpaper with a non-woven base is not intended for painting - its surface has already been subjected to decorative treatment.

Vinyl

They differ from non-woven ones in that their top layer consists of vinyl - a durable film made of polyvinyl chloride. It makes them resistant to abrasion and wet cleaning.

PVC film is absolutely impermeable not only to moisture, but also to air. In this regard, it is not recommended to use vinyl wallpaper in children's bedrooms, as well as in rooms with high humidity. In the first case, they will interfere with natural gas exchange and access fresh air into the room, and in the second case, they will cause an even greater increase in humidity and the accumulation of condensation on the walls and ceilings.

When gluing vinyl wallpaper, it is necessary to coat both the wall and the wallpaper with glue.

In addition, there are differences in the technology of wallpapering the wall. With the adhesive composition, only the surface of the wall is treated.

Provides for treating not only the wall with glue, but also the material being glued.

This, of course, significantly complicates the entire workflow. For the same reason, when gluing vinyl, the glue consumption is twice as much.

Taking into account these, as well as other more insignificant technical features two types of wallpaper, their own adhesive compositions were developed for each of them.

The consistency of the diluted glue should be similar to sour cream.

Non-woven adhesive is designed for gluing non-woven wallpaper. An adhesive is created based on modified starch, to which methylcellulose and antiseptic components are added. It is supplied to the market in the form of a dry powder.

To prepare ready-to-use adhesive solution starch powder should be diluted cold water in the proportions specified in the instructions on the package. After this, it is left to infuse for 10 - 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

The finished composition should have a consistency similar to sour cream that is not too liquid and does not contain lumps. When applied to a surface, it must cover it with an even layer, since non-woven wallpaper is often intended for painting.

A special feature of the adhesive composition is its indifference to any paints and varnishes. He gets along well with any type paint and varnish materials, no matter on what basis they were made.

The adhesive composition for vinyl is excellent for working with any type of wallpaper - corrugated, smooth, embossed or silk-screened.

It is also created on the basis of starches with improved technical characteristics, But distinctive feature vinyl compounds is their increased sliding ability.

Wallpaper treated with this glue can be easily moved along the wall, achieving the desired alignment of two adjacent sheets. This is achieved by introducing special additives into vinyl adhesives that increase its slip coefficient.

Use non-woven adhesive on vinyl materials without problems

So we come to the main question - is it possible to use vinyl adhesive for non-woven fabric?

Of course, any specialist will answer you that if a special adhesive composition has been developed for flesilin, then it should be used when working with it, but it often happens that the appropriate glue is not available.

As practice shows, such compositions can be used without any fear.

Make non-woven glue thicker

As we saw above, these two types of wallpaper are not much different from each other. The only difference is the presence or absence of PVC film on them. A non-woven base can easily be used for both non-woven wallpaper and vinyl wallpaper.

The adhesive compositions for both types of wallpaper are based on modified starch, and differ only in the presence of minor additives, so vinyl adhesive may well be suitable for working with non-woven fabric.

Moreover, we can say that non-woven fabric interacts well with other adhesive compositions except for lung glue paper wallpaper. This “omnivorousness” is associated with the special structure of the fabric, which has excellent adhesion.

Non-woven wallpaper is usually heavier than vinyl, so the adhesive mixture, when diluted with water, should be made thicker than indicated in the instructions. This will allow you to more firmly hold the non-woven fabric on the wall, preventing it from slipping until the glue hardens.

Use any glue for vinyl, just try to make it thicker

Moreover, this type of wallpaper can be glued using any wallpaper glue. The problem can only arise with a simple composition for gluing paper webs, since it is too liquid and does not have the necessary characteristics.

However, even in this case, you can correct the situation using a long-tested method by adding construction PVA to the wallpaper glue.

This method was used to increase the strength of the composition back in the middle of the last century, when the only type of wallpaper available were paper sheets with a flat pattern applied to them.

2. Polyethylene film.
3. Stationery knife.
4. Long metal ruler.
5. A spatula made of plastic or thick rubber.
6. Bucket for glue.
7. Roller for applying adhesive solution.
8. Roller for rolling sheets.

Preparing the wall

First of all, the old coating is removed from the walls - paint, lime, etc. Sockets and switches are dismantled. Small surface defects are eliminated using putty, large ones - using plaster. For more information about surface preparation, watch this video:

The floors along the wall are covered with polyethylene, and the wall is carefully primed with two layers. Next, from the far corner we begin marking the wall. Using a building level, we draw a vertical line, from which we begin gluing the wallpaper.

The first canvas is glued from the corner along the strip we marked. In this case, we only apply glue to the wall using a roller. There is no need to apply glue to the canvas itself.

On straight sections, the canvases should be aligned in accordance with the trim running along their edge. In the corners, the sheets should be joined with an overlap of 5-6 cm.

The pasted sheet is rolled with a roller to expel air bubbles from under it. We iron the joints rubber spatula for a tighter connection. Any glue that has come out from under the joints is removed with a dry cloth.

Using the increased slip of vinyl adhesive, you can carefully move the non-woven fabrics relative to each other for a clearer alignment of the pattern.
