DIY Roman blinds tutorial. Fastening Mechanism Options

Before making Roman blinds, once again soberly evaluate their pros and cons. This is quite painstaking work that requires a lot of effort and time, so you need to understand what the result will be.

  • Combines with almost any interior.
  • Possibility of mounting on part of the window, on the window itself, not even on the ceiling.
  • There are different sizes, economical in terms of fabric.
  • Do not prevent air from entering the room.

  • Buying curtains is extremely expensive, even with self-production you will have to pay a tidy sum for the fabric.
  • Sewing Roman blinds with your own hands takes a lot of time, and the slightest mistake can lead to the need to do everything again.
  • The lifting mechanism is sensitive and requires careful handling, so it is not suitable for children.

Where to begin

Many girls are interested in how to make Roman blinds with their own hands in order to somehow save money. First you need to decide on the sizes:

  • If you are attaching a curtain directly to a window opening, measure the length and width of the window itself.
  • Second option: you attach the curtain to the wall above the opening. In this case, the length of the curtain is measured from the wall, the fabric falls just below the window sill when unfolded. The width is slightly larger than the width of the window itself.

Materials

  • Fabric of a certain length and width.
  • Velcro along the width of the Roman blind.
  • From 7 to 8 pins made of wood, plastic or metal - the curtain frame. The diameter is about 4 mm, the length is 3 cm less than the width of the curtain.
  • Rings made of metal or plastic for each “drawstring” - the distance between the rods. The diameter of the rings is about 0.1 cm.
  • 3 nylon cords: 2 along the length, 1 across the width of the Roman blind.
  • Weighting material in the form of a plank made of wood or plastic.
  • Bar for fastening curtains 0.25 m height, 0.05 m thickness, width along the width of the curtain.
  • Small nails for attaching the curtain to the bar.

Instructions for making Roman blinds

If you decide to make Roman blinds with your own hands, step-by-step instructions with photos will definitely be useful to you. First, you need to mark the fabric so that you understand how much fabric you need to release and where. Also read our article We sew curtains for the kitchen with our own hands. The following table will help you with this:

The height of the window is measured along the window opening or from the space above it, depending on the type of mounting that you have chosen.

  • The fabric calculation scheme looks something like this:

You need to draw a similar diagram regarding your curtain, and then transfer the markings to the fabric using chalk, soap or a fabric marking pen.

  • Finish the edges of the curtain with a double hem stitch.
  • Nail the block for fastening the curtain above the window, then to it using small nails or furniture stapler attach the Velcro to which the rim will be attached. Velcro is needed so that during washing you can easily remove the fabric and put it in the machine.
  • Fold bottom part curtains from below and sew from above. This “pocket” is intended for weighting material. There is no need to stitch it on the sides: during washing, the weighting material, like other pins, is removed so as not to damage the machine.
  • In the places designated for the pins, attach a finishing border into which the pins will then be inserted.
  • You need to sew rings onto the border: 3 for each. 2 on the edges, 1 in the middle. Later, laces will be threaded into the rings to lift the rim.
  • Velcro is sewn to the top of the curtain for fastening to the bar.
  • Next, you need to thread the threads into the rings as follows:
  • Having pulled out the cords, secure them at the last ring with a knot so that the curtains are held securely in the “unfolded” state. Next, attach a hook to the wall near the window so that you can secure the threads to it when lifting the rim.

  • Before sewing the curtain with a machine, go through all the folds with a “basting” stitch and quickly attach the rings to make sure that the curtain really holds as it should. Only after this do you start working on sewing machine so that you don’t have to unrip the threads afterwards, risking ruining the fabric.
  • If this is your first time sewing something like this, choose a fabric that is comfortable to work with on a sewing machine. It is likely that tulle (thin) or curtain (thick) fabric may cause problems during sewing. Choose something in between like regular cotton canvas.
  • Instead of cords, you can use a special curtain rod with a lifting mechanism, but it is very expensive. When buying a Roman blind in a store, it is for the cornice that the client pays the most.
  • When passing the cord through the rings, it should be firmly tied to each of them. Thus, the structure will be stronger and more reliable.
  • You can tie a ring to the end of the cord to make it easier to hook onto the hook when the rim is deployed.
  • If you don't have a special hook, you can use a regular nail to secure it. However, keep in mind that such a design should look neat. If possible, wrap the nail with leftover fabric from the curtains to match the color.
  • When making curtains, check the thread tension. If it is uneven, the folds will look sloppy and uneven when lifted. If this happens, just tie the cord. Don’t be lazy: do it for yourself!
  • To regulate the rise of the curtain, you can braid rings along the length of the lifting cord. This way you don’t have to wind the cord around the hook, you just need to pull it until the next ring.

This completes the step-by-step instructions “How to sew a Roman blind”, let’s move on to the most interesting part - what unusual interior moves can be implemented using a Roman blind?

Roman blinds are often called “fabric blinds”. There is definitely a similarity: when unfolded, the curtain is a straight canvas the size of a window opening. Obviously, the fabric consumption for sewing it is minimal. Let's consider the sequence of actions when creating Roman blinds with your own hands.

Roman blinds can be recommended for any interior. They will organically fit into the kitchen environment, where good lighting is necessary, they can help darken the bedroom or complement an elegant curtain set in the living room. Obviously, in each individual case it will be necessary to purchase fabric of certain properties: translucent light, if light diffusion is required, opaque Blackout type for complete darkening. The kitchen requires fabric with dirt-repellent properties.

An important point: the choice of sewing colorful fabrics of natural composition is associated with the need to sew a double curtain. The lining will protect the main fabric from fading.

When choosing a fabric, pay attention to the compliance of the plastic properties with the requirements of the style. Soft plastic fabrics or textiles with a sparse structure are not suitable. To sew Roman blinds, you need dense fabrics that are shape-resistant and capable of forming a beautiful, clear fold.

When choosing a color, take into account the peculiarities of the curtain style: when unfolded, the ornament and texture of the fabric will appear in all its splendor, but when gathered, large motifs of the ornament may be distorted. If you want to emphasize a spectacular fold pattern, choose plain fabrics light shades. The drapery of dark and patterned textiles will be less noticeable.

To make Roman blinds you will need:

  1. Main fabric, lining if necessary.
  2. Velcro tape with Velcro (calculated according to the width of the curtain).
  3. Weighting agents (aluminum or plastic tubes Ø 5-10 mm).
  4. Plastic rings Ø 10 mm.
  5. Nylon or nylon cord.
  6. Bottom weight bar.
  7. Wooden block 5x3 cm.
  8. Finishing border.
  9. Rings on a screw stem.
  10. Furniture stapler.
  11. Cord holder.

There are ready-made curtain rods for Roman blinds on sale, fully equipped: with a lifting mechanism, stiffening ribs, bottom weighting and rings - they are completely ready for hanging. The standard kit of the cornice includes universal fastenings. If you decide to use them, follow the mounting and installation instructions.

Instead of using ready-made kits, you can create your own design that exactly matches the required dimensions.

Necessary measurements and fabric calculations

Measurements are taken in accordance with the location of the canvas.

Roman blinds can be attached:

  • for each sash;
  • into the opening (in close proximity to the glass);
  • on the opening (to the wall or ceiling).

The first and second options are used in the case when the Roman blind acts as a blind and acts in tandem with other elements of the curtain set: curtains, drapes, lambrequin.

Fastening on each sash

In the case where the curtain is attached to each sash, its size is calculated in accordance with the dimensions of the glass. Add 1.5 cm to the obtained measurement results.

Attaching a Roman blind to an opening

Dimensions of Roman blinds intended for mounting in window opening, are calculated based on data on the height of the window and the width of the window opening. The width and length of the curtain should be smaller sizes window opening by 1 cm.

If you plan to install Roman blinds on the opening, you need to measure the width and height of the window. To determine the width of the curtain, add 10-15 cm to the results of measuring the width of the window opening (the overlap is needed so that the finished canvas covers the slopes). Calculate the length of the curtains in accordance with the method of fastening (to the ceiling or to the wall) so that the lower edge of the curtain is in open position covered the window sill.

The number of weights is determined by the ratio of the length of the product to the size of the fold; in your calculations, be guided by the approximate distance between the slats - 20 cm. For example, with a curtain height of 150 cm, 7 weights will be needed.

Next, when calculating the distance between the weight strips, keep in mind that it must be the same in order to form uniform folds. Based on the ratio of the length of the product to the number of weighting materials, you get Exact size folds 150 / 7 = 21 cm.

Fabric cutting, sewing and installation of Roman blinds

1. Before transferring the calculation values to the fabric, decate it: soak it for a few minutes in warm water, dry and iron. This way you will prepare the fabric for cutting and prevent the finished curtain from shrinking in the future.

2. Transfer the calculated height and width measurements onto the fabric. Add a hem allowance of 2.5 cm on the sides. The size of the top allowance is determined by the size of the wooden block, in our case 5 cm, plus a 2 cm hem allowance. The bottom allowance depends on the size of the bottom weight strip. To attach the bottom strip, you need to tuck and stitch the bottom edge of the curtain so that a “pocket” or drawstring is formed. When calculating, do not forget about the hem allowance - 2.5 cm. Finish the edges with a double hem.

3. On wooden block(it can be pre-covered with fabric, painted or varnished) attach a piece of Velcro (the one with hooks). You can secure the Velcro with a furniture stapler or nails.

4. Finish the top edge of the curtain and sew on the other part of the Velcro tape. Finish the bottom edge: turn the fabric over and stitch it so that a drawstring is formed. The width of the drawstring should correspond to the size of the weight bar.

5. On the wrong side of the canvas, mark the places where the finishing border passes; we will use it to attach the weighting material, stitching from the wrong side.

6. Sew the hem to create a channel for inserting the weighting material. Next, insert a weight into each drawstring and sew up the channel on one side. Leave the other side open to remove weights from the curtain when washing.

7. At the places where the weights are attached, sew guide rings, placing them symmetrically relative to the center of the curtain. Place the outer rings no further than 10 cm from the edge of the curtain.

8. Attach the rings on the screw leg to the bar, exactly repeating the location of the guide rings on the curtain fabric, and attach another ring from the end of the bar (to collect all the threads).

9. Attach the top strip (to the ceiling, wall or window opening).

10. Using Velcro, attach the curtain to the beam. Tie the ends of the cords to the bottom rings and thread them through all the guide rings to bring all the cords to one side where the cord holder will attach.

To make the cord look aesthetically pleasing, consider making it heavier. Such a weighting part can be a large bead or curtain ring. To fix the curtains in the desired position, you will need a cord holder; its function can be performed by a hook screwed into the wall.

More than three hundred years ago, the inhabitants of Rome, protecting their home from dust and bright sunlight, they hung a rectangular piece of heavy fabric on the window, which, if necessary, folded like an accordion - it rose up, forming horizontal folds.

Since those ancient times, Roman blinds have not lost their relevance, and today they are universal, but, at the same time, stylish and original element window decoration.

Since the advent of Roman blinds, the design and principle of their operation have not changed at all, although Some varieties have also appeared:

  1. Classic. A smooth and even fabric is evenly gathered into even folds. This is achieved by a frame made of slats, plates or tubes sewn into the fabric.
  2. Cascade curtains consist of folds even when opened. These Roman blinds are more elegant and pompous, therefore suitable for decoration large windows in living rooms, concert halls.
  3. Frameless Roman blinds once became the prototype classic curtains. They are sewn without guides and assembled in the center and sides, forming original “ears”, like a lambrequin.

What's good in the kitchen

Rimki, as designers like to call them, look elegant and impressive in the kitchen and children's room, in the living room and restaurant. In their functionality, these curtains are similar to blinds and roller blinds(give access to light from below the window), but when unfolded they look like traditional curtains.

This constructive solution makes the Roman blind indispensable for the kitchen if:

  • the work surface is located opposite the window. Sewn down to the tabletop, the curtains will not crawl across the table and interfere with the work process.
  • the window is close to the source of fire. The panel of a traditional curtain can catch fire when the wind blows. Such a nuisance is completely eliminated if there is a Roman blind hanging on the kitchen window.
  • The kitchen is tiny in size. After all, this type of curtain visually expands the room, and if you also choose the right color and texture of the fabric, the curtain will become not only a functional thing, but also an original decorative element.

Classic Roman blind design

The laconic design is one of the main advantages of Roman blinds. It occupies only the surface area of the opening, no draperies, frills or additional decorative elements not intended here.

The simple shape of the Roman blind allows you to make it yourself without fear of ruining a significant amount of fabric if something doesn’t work out. Even a novice seamstress can easily cope with this task. The most important thing in sewing a Roman curtain is to choose the fabric wisely, make the right patterns and strictly follow the instructions.

Material selection

When choosing a material for sewing a Roman blind with your own hands, you first need to decide on the main purpose of the curtain: whether it will transmit light or not. If you need a curtain to protect from the hot sun, it is better to choose thick fabric. Now materials are sold with black out treatment, protecting against scorching rays. In cases where there is no need to hide from the sun, you can use light, translucent, well-draped fabrics.

In order for the Roman blind to blend harmoniously into the kitchen design, it is necessary to take into account the prevailing color scheme or vice versa - play in contrast. You can sew a curtain to match the chair covers. Can you take into account the color? kitchen set and focus on it when choosing material for curtains.

Due to the simplicity of the design, the main emphasis is on the fabric. Therefore, when choosing material for sewing Italian curtains with your own hands, There are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Striped patterns are not recommended for Roman blinds. With such a color, all the shortcomings in cutting and tailoring will be obvious. If you like geometry, then let it be abstract.
  2. Also, you should not choose fabric with a large pattern, since when you lift the curtain on the formed folds, it will become unclear.
  3. Linen materials shrink significantly after washing. Therefore, you need to buy fabric with a reserve, and before sewing you should soak the material in hot water and leave for a while. Thanks to this procedure, the shrinkage of the curtains during subsequent starts will be insignificant. It is recommended to carry out these manipulations with other tissues so that there are no surprises later.
  4. Curtains for the kitchen should have dirt-repellent properties, not absorb odors, wash well and be suitable for regular washing.
  5. Roman blinds are not made wide. Maximum 1.5 meters. If you want to have Italian curtains on a spacious window, you can install two or more cornices.

Do it yourself: necessary materials

To make a Roman blind with your own hands for the kitchen, you will need the following materials:

  • Main fabric and, if necessary, lining fabric;
  • Tape with sticky layer(Velcro) along the width of the curtain;
  • Finishing border;
  • 7-8 rods with a diameter of 4-5 mm. They can be wooden, plastic or metal. Their length should be approximately 3 cm shorter than the width of the curtain;
  • Plastic rings (2-3 pieces for each drawstring), through which the cords that lift the curtain will be threaded;
  • Nylon cord. It is necessary to make three cuts: the length of each lace should be equal to two lengths of the curtain and one more width;
  • Weighting bar;
  • A wooden plank or beam with a cross-section of 2.5x5 cm and a length equal to the width of the canvas for hanging a curtain;
  • Handle or chain for lifting curtains;
  • Nails, screw hooks, shurpas.

Calculation of the amount of fabric

To the width of the window you need to add 2.5 cm on each side. Typically, Roman blinds are sewn up to the window sill, but variations with a floor length are also possible. To the length indicator, 12 cm is added for allowances: 2 cm will go into the top seam, the remaining 10 cm - into a double (5 cm) hem at the bottom.

As such, patterns are not required to make a Roman blind with your own hands. It is enough to draw a rectangle on a piece of ironed fabric the size of the kitchen window and correctly mark the folds.

One of the main secrets of sewing Roman blinds with your own hands is to accurately calculate the width of the folds. For openings with a length of 145 to 220 cm, 7 folds are made.

Sewing steps

So, let's begin:

  1. On the wrong side, mark the lines of the hem, folds and places where the rings are installed for threading the cord.
  2. Finish the side edges with a double hem.
  3. Use a furniture stapler or small nails to secure the Velcro on the underside of the beam, which will act as a cornice.
  4. Instead of timber, you can use a ready-made cornice (lambrequin strip), which is sold along with Velcro and fastening material.
  5. Sew the remaining adhesive tape onto the treated upper front edge of the curtain, which will allow you to remove the curtain for washing.
  6. At the bottom edge of the pattern, make a hem and a drawstring; a weighting agent will be inserted into it. Used as a sinker aluminum profile, a couple of centimeters shorter than the cornice.
  7. Sew a finishing border from the inside of the curtain and insert rods into the resulting pockets. Sew up the sides.
  8. Hand sew rings to the cornice or beam to install the lifting mechanism. The rings for the cord are arranged symmetrically, taking into account that the outermost ones should be placed at a distance of 5-10 cm from the edges of the curtain.
  9. After fixing the pattern on the cornice with Velcro, the procedure for threading the cord into the rings begins: you need to tie a knot on the bottom ring, securing it with glue for strength, and pull the cord through all seven rings in vertical row. A similar operation is carried out with the remaining rings.
  10. After threading all the cords, bring them to one side and pull them tightly. This manipulation will cause the folds to be evenly distributed across the entire width of the pattern. Using tape you need to temporarily secure them in this position.
  11. A beam or cornice with a curtain is attached to a designated place (ceiling, opening between frames, etc.). Now you can remove the tape securing the folds - the curtain will fall. Having equalized the tension of all the cords, gather them together and tie them in a knot behind the last ring.
  12. Pass the cords through the handle to raise the curtain and tie tightly 45-50 cm from the first knot. Carefully trim the ends of the cords. The Roman blind for the kitchen is ready.

Following the instructions above, you can make an original Roman blind with your own hands in a few hours, which will become a real decoration of the kitchen. And if you sew several color options With this universal curtain, you can periodically update the interior, pleasantly surprising your household and guests.

Regular, chic and stylish Roman blinds will make the interior more elegant and at the same time more comfortable. This type of product is suitable for any room because they are universal. An important question: what fabric can you use to make Roman blinds with your own hands? Specially selected fabrics will make cozier kitchen or any other room.

Simple and elegant Roman blinds fit perfectly into any interior, especially this type of curtain is perfect for the kitchen, where everything should be as functional and convenient as possible.

Features of creating an attractive and small-sized style, emphasized by Roman blinds, are associated with the development functional design, which can fit perfectly into the interior of various rooms.

After studying the description of the work, you can. This can be done without much difficulty, taking into account your own abilities and capabilities. However, this type of product is not easy to implement, as it may initially seem. Roman blinds have small, but very important secrets.

You can achieve the correct execution of all the work on sewing curtains if you are firmly aware of the tricks that are described below. In practice, the sewing process is not anything complicated, so you can safely start doing all the work.

Sewing Roman blinds can be made from different types fabrics, for example, for curtains, for tulle curtains, etc. It is best to use materials that have a denser structure, ideally retaining the shape given to them during the use of curtains. It is important to emphasize the beauty of all folds when making Roman blinds.

If Roman blinds are lowered, then the presence of a straight fabric will perfectly show the beauty of the pattern and texture of the fabric.

Considering their moderate size, Roman blinds can allow you to economically decorate your own home, pampering yourself with the choice of an appropriate design.

If there is a desire to create Roman blinds that let in daylight and at the same time perform the function of protecting the room from prying eyes, then you can’t think of a better purchase than translucent material. In order to block clear light, you can choose black out material, which is lightproof, treated with a special impregnation on its reverse side. Such material is not capable of fading under the influence of sunlight, but the furniture and wallpaper in the room will always be protected by curtains.

When planning to start sewing, they approach the choice responsibly, taking into account all the equipment in the kitchen. Roman blinds should be made transparent, since otherwise it will be difficult to prepare food, avoid contact with steam, etc. Curtains for the kitchen should be made of fabric that has the property of repelling dirt. This is due to minimal absorption of odors, long-term preservation of aesthetic external image

. Such fabric should be perfectly washable and resistant to frequent washing. These characteristics are more characteristic of synthetic fabrics. If you need to create a natural and natural style, then A mixed fabric with the addition of synthetic thread to linen, silk or cotton bases is suitable. This type of material does not require careful care, since it contains synthetic thread, the fabric remains like new after many washes, and the aesthetics of its appearance are preserved.

For another option, a light reverse side of the material and a bright print on its front side are more suitable. A universal option is a monochromatic material that can be perfectly combined with any genre. The presence of gastronomic or floral motifs, checkered patterns or other patterns will be an excellent addition to the country, rural or Provence style. The presence of abstractions or geometric shapes will harmonize with the design of any modern kitchen.

What product size is appropriate?

When planning to sew curtains yourself or order them, you should definitely take into account all the required proportions, since the size of the product must be combined with the size of the window.

The solution to this issue is related to the implementation of accurate measurements and calculation of the required material consumption. This will require attaching the Roman curtains in a certain way, for example, if the curtains are located close to the glass and there is a large window sill. Access to it must be maintained with the curtains drawn. The window sill can be used for various purposes. If the Roman blind is not a solo one, then it is used simultaneously with a lambrequin, curtain or other types of curtains.

How are Roman blinds attached?

The curtain is attached inside the opening itself, which is the more preferable method if there are windows, the doors of which can be opened to ventilate the room. In this case, the Roman blind is made 5-10 cm wider than the window opening. The edges of the product must have allowances that cover the slopes of the windows to eliminate gaps. If you make a larger allowance at the bottom, then the cornice is fixed to a larger high level where the window opening is located. The curtain will not interfere with the opening of the frame.

When moving on to cutting Roman blinds yourself, you should take into account several relevant recommendations. The presence of even pocket folds should be odd, starting with three. For correct calculation The distance between the folds should be divided by the length of the curtain by the required number of folds.

The folding pocket must have the appropriate size, half of which must be equal to the lower segment of the curtain. To accurately cut the curtains, you should correctly measure the window opening. The curtain diagram is drawn up on paper, and then the dimensions are transferred to the fabric to make it easier to make all calculations of the dimensions of the canvas.

An allowance of 25 mm should be left on each side, which will be larger at the bottom and top, that is, 60 cm. The highest part of the curtain should be provided taking into account the size of the fold of the material, and the thickness of the wood strip should be 50 mm. The canvas should be strengthened on it finished product. A lower allowance is required, taking into account the cross-section of the rail where the drawstring is inserted. This is required to make the blinders heavier.

Preparatory work

You can choose to sew a one-piece version of Roman blinds or consisting of required quantity canvases If a number of canvases are used, then each one is placed separately on the cornice. If you have experience in sewing Roman blinds, you can easily make this type of product.

For beginners, performing work related to sewing and fastening curtains will present some difficulty. That's why experienced craftsmen They recommend that beginners start by cutting and creating curtains from solid fabric.

It is necessary to prepare the following materials for the work:

  1. Adhesive tape taking into account the width of the curtain.
  2. Lining fabric.
  3. Main material.
  4. Self-tapping screws, nails, hooks with screw-shaped legs.
  5. A wooden plank for fastening the product (section - 2.5x5 cm).
  6. Nylon cord (3 pcs).
  7. Weight bar.
  8. Pins or rods (iron, wood or plastic) - 7 or 8 pcs.
  9. Rings (10-12 mm in diameter) made of plastic, suitable for any drawstring.

The length of the pins should be 3 cm less than the width of the product, and prepared rings are necessary for threading the cords. The presence of rings and cords will provide a mechanism for raising and lowering Roman blinds.

At the first stage, it is necessary to measure the window opening, adding 5-7 cm on the sides of the canvas and 10-15 cm on the bottom and top sides. The size of the allowance along the length of the curtains in height should be 20% of the total size of the Roman blind fabric. You can avoid errors in calculations when making Roman blinds with your own hands by eliminating shrinkage of the material during sewing. Calculate optimal distance between the folds of the product will allow the tabular data indicated in the table.

Correct calculation of the size of the folds of the product is one of important secrets, which you need to know when making Roman blinds with your own hands. To create a special fold, markings are made in the form of stripes on the wrong side of the fabric. This marking will be needed to create future folds and attach plastic rings for threading the cord through them, as shown in the fabric calculation diagram.

For a more successful and beautiful drapery, each of the fold strips of the product should be placed at an equal distance, and their width should be the same size. Next, the fabric is processed from each side edge by double folding. This will prevent the side seams of the product from being pulled together.

This step by step guide with photos will help you sew classic Roman blinds with your own hands.

This master class describes in detail a method in which not a single stitch of stitching will be visible on the front side of the curtain. This will give the product a neat look and will look like the work of a real professional.

In addition, you do not risk ruining your curtain with uneven stitching, which happens quite often.

Of course the volume self made and the time spent will be a little longer, but the result is worth it.

What you will need:

  • a piece of fabric for the front side (thick material is best);
  • a piece of fabric for the lining (it is best to use white chintz);
  • needle;
  • threads;
  • ruler;
  • scissors;
  • pencil or special fabric marker;
  • sewing machine;
  • (traditional wooden or finished mechanism);
  • rods for the frame and weighting material.

Step 1. Take measurements

First of all, you need to measure the window and calculate the dimensions.

You need to decide exactly how the curtain will be placed: inside the window opening or outside.

Inside the opening

If you chose the first option, then the height of the curtain is measured from the top slope of the window to the window sill.

To calculate the exact width, you need to measure the window opening in three places, as it may be uneven. The smallest value obtained should be taken as a basis and subtract another 2 cm from it so that the curtain passes easily and does not rub against the slope.

Outside the opening

In the second case, to determine the height of the curtain, you need to decide at what level from the window niche the cornice will be located. Mark the top mounting point for the curtain rod and measure down to the window sill. This will give you the final height.

There are two ways to get the width:

  • take the width of the window sill as a basis
  • or measure the width of the window opening and add 12 cm to it.

Select either of these two measurement options to get the width of your curtain.

Step 2. Count the number and height of folds

Now that you have the height and width of the future curtain, you can make all the calculations.

Usually they make from 5 to 9 folds depending on the height of the curtain. But if necessary, you can make any odd number.

Calculation example:

Curtain height: 124 cm
Top margin: 5 cm

Amount of fabric for folds: 124 - 5=119 cm

  • divide by 3: 119: 3 = 39.6 cm
  • divide by 5: 119: 5 = 23.8 cm
  • divide by 7: 119: 7 = 17 cm
  • divide by 9: 119: 9 = 13.2 cm

From the calculation it can be seen that 7 sections of 17 cm each will look best.

For 7 sections you will need 3 rods.

Step 3. Calculate the amount of fabric for the front side

The length of the fabric for the front side = the length of the finished curtain + 5 cm for the hem at the top + 9 cm for the hem at the bottom.

Step 4. Calculate the amount of fabric for the lining

The cutting width of the lining material will be equal to the width of the finished curtain. This is due to the fact that when the curtain is ready, the width of the lining, taking into account the folds along the edges, will be slightly narrower. Therefore, there is no need to add additional centimeters.

The length of the lining is calculated taking into account the pockets for twigs and hems at the top and bottom.

Lining length = finished curtain length + 2 cm for hem at top + 2 cm for hem at bottom + 2.5 cm for each pocket for twigs.

For example, if you should have 3 twigs, then you will need to add 7.5 cm.

Step 5: Preparing the Lining

Cut the lining fabric to size and iron it well.

Then measure 2 cm on each side, fold them inward and iron the hems.

Use a ruler to measure where the twig pockets should be. From this line, step back 1.25 cm (half of 2.5 cm) and draw a second one. Along this line you will need to make a stitch to form a pocket.

Fold the fabric along the line where you want the pocket to be. Sew the lining along the second line. This way you should have a pocket for the twig. Repeat with the remaining pockets.

Step 6: Preparing the Front Side

Cut the fabric to size for the front side and iron well. Fold 5 cm on the sides and top, and 9 cm on the bottom. Iron the folds.

Step 7. Sew on Velcro tape

To ensure that the curtain can be easily removed from the curtain rod, a special textile Velcro tape is used.

Sew the ribbon to the right side of the fabric just above the fold line.

Step 8. Connect the lining to the front side

Place the lining on top of the facing fabric. The lining should extend 2 cm on the sides from the edges. Secure the fabric with pins. Check with a ruler whether the pocket spots match the front side.

Fold the bottom part of the facing fabric in half to form a pocket for the weighting material. Cover the resulting pocket with a lining on top.

Hand sew the lining to the facing fabric using a hidden seam.

Sweep the corners, but so that there is room for inserting the weighting agent.

The lining in the corner should not be completely sewn. This will make it possible to insert and remove the weighting material.

Bend top part with Velcro and sew it also using a hidden seam.

Step 9. Sew on the rings

The rings should be located at a distance of 10 cm from the edges of the curtain and evenly across the entire width with an interval of 30 to 40 cm. If you use ready set with a cornice, then make the number of rings according to it.

Measure using a ruler and mark the places where the rings should be attached.

Then sew the lining and facing together with a few stitches where the rings should be attached, as well as at the point halfway between them and at the edges.

Insert the twigs into the pockets.

Sew the rings according to the marks.

Step 10. Thread the cords and install the cornice

Hang the curtain rod on the window. Then use masking tape to hang the curtain on the curtain rod.

Thread the cords through the rings and secure them at the ends with clips or simply tie them in knots.
