A simple metal grill. Step-by-step instructions on how to make a metal grill with your own hands

The grill is a convenient and useful culinary equipment for cooking in the heat. This functional invention allows you to cook different foods using natural heat from coals. Despite the fact that it was originally made as a universal cooking tool, today the barbecue is the basis for preparing meat and barbecue. Around it, trips to the country house and nature are held, saying goodbye to autumn, welcoming the arrival of spring and celebrating summer. And below we will provide drawings of metal barbecues, their photos and videos on the technology of manufacturing barbecues of various designs.

Buying a barbecue is an expensive purchase. A simple metal structure sometimes costs large sums without justifying the quality or its appearance. Therefore, it is much better to make a barbecue with your own hands, using drawings, high-quality metal, and also your skills.

Grill base

Brazier is handy tool cooking in the heat. It has a very durable design, but all its features are in nuances. They allow you to quickly and easily prepare kebabs and other dishes, providing enough heat for cooking.

Among the main advantages of the barbecue, the following are worth highlighting:

  • suitable sizes;
  • air holes;
  • depth;
  • recesses for skewers.

While some are obvious, they are all required for quality cooking. As for the depth of the grill, it allows a sufficient amount of heat to be generated and the meat to be placed at a height where it will cook but not burn. This way you can put the required amount of wood.

Air holes - especially important nuance these structures. After all, it is because of them that meat cooked on the grill is very different from other methods of cooking outdoors. Regular air flow allows you to maintain the temperature and heat of the coals, fully using their full potential.

Attention! Another nuance of the grill is the pallet. It prevents coals from falling through special ventilation holes into the bottom and contributes to partial air regulation.

For further use of the design, sizing is extremely important. After all, cooking takes place on a grill or skewers, so you need to rely on its average size. The grill should be wide, allowing you to place the entire length of the skewer and should provide the required amount of heat, allowing for more than eight servings of meat.

And the last nuance is making recesses for skewers. They allow you to place the meat in any position, frying it evenly on different sides. This approach plays a big role in preparing aromatic and juicy kebab without burning.

But these points always vary depending on the type of grill.

Deciding on the type of grill: drawings, photos

It’s worth saying right away that there are numerous varieties of such structures. After all, everyone wants to find best option, where to cook meat and other products in the heat. Today the following types of barbecue are distinguished:

  1. Ordinary.

A regular grill has a square design. Although they are heavy, they can be carried. It often has removable legs.

  1. Collapsible.

Lightweight and small collapsible option that you can carry in your car. It is more convenient and simpler, and is also suitable for hiking in the forest.

  1. Stationary.

Powerful grill made of metal. The basis can be brick blocks, providing high reliability. Often such barbecues can be supplemented with steel decorations.

Choosing the type of barbecue is very important when it comes to self-construction. This way, you can decide on the tasks and choose the best option. However, it is recommended to choose the regular type as the most versatile choice for summer residents.

Attention! Barbecues can have different shapes. There are round, rectangular, curved and other types, the cooking of which may differ slightly.

Drawings of metal barbecues: photos of different types

Before making the appropriate drawings and choosing dimensions for the future barbecue, for construction you need to choose the best option, which is used most often. It is necessary to select the appropriate width and height of the structure, and the appropriate length of the legs. A drawing of a regular barbecue is provided as follows:

Dimensions indicated in millimeters. It is clearly visible that the total height of the barbecue with a length of legs of 70 cm and a length of 95 cm. In this case, the depth of the barbecue will be 25 cm, which is the optimal distance from the heat to the skewers.

The width of the grill is 28 cm, which is slightly lower than the average size of the skewer. The length is 54 cm, needed to distribute 9 servings evenly over the heat.

The upper part of the structure is equipped with gaps for skewers. This way, you can distribute the meat evenly and fix it freely when rotating, ensuring uniform cooking. Moreover, the distance between the gaps should be 6 cm. It is necessary to leave space between the outer walls and gaps so that the meat does not touch them and also does not burn.

Excellent ventilation is an important nuance. Here it is achieved through holes with a diameter of 12-15 mm located on the side walls. The holes are located at the bottom of the sheet of metal in a checkerboard pattern. They are not needed on the front side walls.

Attention! The presented design does not imply the presence of a tray and holes at the bottom of the grill. You can easily fix this by welding small corners to the bottom or legs and choosing the appropriate sheet of metal.

How to prepare elements of a future structure?

Metal sheets serve as the basis for the barbecue. We do not recommend using other materials, since the grill provides sufficient resistance to compactness and heat. The thickness of the metal should be approximately 2-3 mm. To work you will need:

  • Two sheets of metal measuring 280x250 mm and 240x250 mm.
  • One sheet of metal 540x280 mm.
  • Angles 700 mm long and four metal pipes.
  • Welding machine.
  • Drill.
  • Roulette.
  • Metal saw or grinder.

Most people prefer a different assembly option. Different sheets can be replaced with a larger one metal sheet. By making cuts, you can connect the structure with a small number of welds. This way it will be more reliable.

It is important to consider additional elements, if the design differs from the above. It can be supplemented with a tray, carrying handles, recesses for legs and other details.

First of all, you need to perform preliminary markings. Welding and fastening points are marked, and special gaps are created. To do this, use a saw or grinder. This step also creates air holes.

Attention! Often such a structure is made on reinforcing legs. They are unreliable, as the structure will wobble even under light loads. Therefore, it is better to replace them with corners.

How to weld a barbecue with your own hands

Welding – best solutions for the barbecue. It can withstand high temperature changes and is bolted efficiently. To do this, use a welding machine, regardless of its type. Then the structure is fixed one by one, and welding is performed at the corners.

Attention! For more convenient welding, it is worth using metal corners along the sides. They can also increase the reliability of the seams, as well as significantly make the structure heavier.

Then comes the welding of the arms and legs. They are fixed along the sides (corners) or to the bottom of the structure (pipes). You need to weld them securely, since the grill itself will be quite heavy.

Attention! To fix the legs, you can use collapsible elements rather than a welding machine. Removable legs will significantly reduce the dimensions of the barbecue during storage.

Upon completion of the work, you need to sand the seams and also check the entire structure for reliability.

Metal barbecues with a canopy: drawings

To cook kebabs in bad weather, you can use a special grill design. This allows you to hide the heat and meat from precipitation, but this design itself is not simple. There are two options available here:

  • installing a canopy directly on the grill;
  • installation of an additional canopy, which does not belong to the barbecue.

The latter option will be more rational, since it allows you to hide not only the kebabs, but also the person who monitors their preparation. The first option requires additional costs, since the base must withstand the load from the canopy.

In this case, we recommend mounting the structure on metal corners. This is the best option as it makes it easier to assemble. The canvas for the canopy is most often corrugated sheeting. It is fireproof, does not react in any way to temperature changes and is lightweight, which is important for a lightweight design.

Assembling a canopy is not much different from the usual one, and all that is required is fire protection and proper placement of the base. This way, you can safely prepare food without worrying about getting caught on the fittings.

It is worth noting that a metal grill with a canopy is difficult option, which can be done by experienced welders. It is important here to create reliable design, the weight of which will be evenly distributed on the base. For stationary barbecues it is much easier to make such a canopy, since a load-bearing foundation can be installed for them.

The structure with a canopy can be decorated metal elements, as you can see in the photo. This will not only improve the appearance, but also make the canopy more stable and reliable.

Attention! If the roof is installed low, equip it with a special air duct.

Painting finished product

An important issue in making a barbecue is painting. You cannot do without it, since the metal used in the structure is subject to rust, and ash and soot do not improve its appearance.

For painting, special compounds are used, which meet the following requirements:

  • heat resistance;
  • resistance to temperature changes;
  • no harmful fumes.

The following coatings meet these requirements:

  • silicon-organic enamels;
  • heat-resistant paints for various purposes.

It should be noted that painting a barbecue with your own hands is a rather complex and responsible process. They need special firing, after which they receive their properties. Another option is proposed - oxidation. It is quite expensive to implement, but it is possible to do it yourself.

It is better to choose black color for paint. Since there will be a lot of ash and soot nearby, the remaining coatings will quickly become dirty. With this color the plaque will be completely invisible.

Attention! Painting should only be done on the outside. Inside, the coating peels off quite quickly as a result of high heat, and there is no point in this.

Making a barbecue with your own hands is quite simple. To do this you will need a sheet of metal, a welding machine and desire. However, it is worth sticking to the plan and scheme, since in the future any deviations may affect the ease of use. But the materials on our website “Remontik”, among which the drawings will be especially useful metal barbecues and their photos, as well as videos on production, will allow you to cope with this task.

A full-fledged picnic in nature is usually associated with barbecue and gatherings around the fire. The process of cooking meat on the grill adds solemnity and warmth to the moment while relaxing with friends. Usually men are involved in the action, who claim that “kebabs do not tolerate women’s hands.” We will not challenge their right to cook meat on coals, which came from ancient times, but will look at how to make a barbecue with your own hands, we will provide photos, drawings and useful videos.

The birth of fragrant pieces of meat in the smoke is a kind of sacrament that can melt the heart of every unapproachable beauty, and if you also make the grill yourself, the kebab will become almost a culinary masterpiece.

Success factors for preparing delicious shish kebab

The success of cooking meat over charcoal depends on the following factors:

  • Properly marinated meat. You should not look for ultra-modern recipes that involve the use of mayonnaise, sauces and fermented milk products. Classic kebab is vinegar or wine, spices and parsley. Other marinades are only suitable for the softest and most tender pieces of meat. The organic acids found in parsley and vinegar are better for effectively denaturing meat. In this case, this process means the breakdown of protein molecules to a state that will be most suitable for digestion by the body. Moreover, the acidic environment does not allow fire to create carcinogenic compounds in food that are harmful to your health. The pieces of meat that you are going to cook on the grill with your own hands should be cubes with sides measuring at least 4-5 cm. Thus, they will not dry out, but will be soft and juicy.
  • DIY barbecue. The design of the grill must be of dimensions suitable for laying skewers with sufficient clearances. Usually the length of the barbecue is equal to the length of the skewers, minus 15 cm. The width can be calculated from the conditions that there is at least 80 mm of space per skewer. The distance to the coals should be no more than 100 mm, and the depth of the fire should be up to 250 mm with slots for skewers along its long side.
  • The walls of the barbecue. The thicker they are, the better. And you should not clean off the soot from their surface, since this is a source of infrared rays, and without them you will only get meat baked over a fire. In order for the kebab to be not only a tasty, but also a healthy dish, the air hole must be in the bottom, as in the photo presented by our website “Remontik”.
  • When a stream of air passes through the coals from bottom to top, oxygen will burn out in it, and you will avoid harmful oxidation of food enzymes. If the blowing holes are located on the side, oxygen will remain in the outgoing flow, which means that the kebab cannot be considered healthy.
  • Fragrant coals. View an archive of home videos of barbecue cooked on the grill. As a result, you will notice that the widest smiles of those present during the tasting of food cooked on wood from... fruit trees. Firewood from apricot, cherry, pear, apple and others fruit trees will give the dish a unique aroma and taste.
  • Making a barbecue with your own hands. On the Internet you can find photos and drawings necessary to create a barbecue of different types with your own hands - from ordinary metal to stone or brick. Below we will look at all designs, moving from the simplest (made of metal) to more complex ones, such as a stone grill-stove or grill-smokehouse.

Advantages of do-it-yourself metal barbecues

The main advantage of barbecues made of metal is their low cost. Even if you buy the corners, metal sheets, pipes and rods necessary for the work, the price of the materials will be much less than the finished store-bought product. Well, if we take into account that even metal trash in the form of cylinders, barrels, scraps of corners and pieces of sheet metal can be used for this design, then the cost of the finished product will be close to zero.

Another undeniable advantage is the ease of manufacture. Every person who knows welding can repeat complex design. In addition, such barbecues are easy to install in a new place and can be taken with you on a picnic. Sufficient wall thickness allows the grill to serve for many years. In addition, you will enjoy the result. Having created a masterpiece from scrap metal with your own hands, you will remember it with pride.

Attention! Barbecues with insufficient wall thickness can burn out, they can suffer from overheating, and they can rust from moisture and rain.

DIY barbecue made from sheet material

If you are planning to make a grill from sheet material, then it will serve you for a long time, if the thickness is sufficient and the metal can withstand high temperatures, do not worry about burning. Moreover, a product with a metal thickness of 4-5 mm will not move, which often happens with structures welded from roofing sheets. Typically, a device with a wall thickness of 1-2 mm may be needed for outdoor trips. Its weight will be somewhat less, and the grill of a collapsible design, the drawings of which you will see below, is easy to transport.

Before you start work, you need to stock up on the required amount of metal, 2-4 mm thick, a corner with a shelf width of 40 mm, an angle grinder and a welding machine, an electric drill with drills, a marker, a ruler and a construction square. To make the legs, you need to prepare a square or pipe with a cross-section of 400 mm 2 or more.

Work on the manufacture of a portable barbecue from sheet material is carried out in the following sequence:

  • The drawing is transferred to a metal sheet and the blanks are cut out with a grinder. Using material 2 mm thick, apply a drawing in the form of a development, and then bend the workpiece at a right angle along the line where the side walls adjoin the bottom.
  • Take a sheet of metal.
  • Measure it.
  • Cut out the required format.
  • We clean the edges of the sheet for the bottom.
  • We bend the sheet and grab it.
  • The side walls are welded perpendicular to the bottom using a square, after which the seams are carefully welded along the abutment line.
  • All gaps are removed.
  • We take a welding machine and weld the joints.
  • Cleaning up the seams.
  • Using a drill with a diameter of at least 12 mm, holes are drilled for air flow at the bottom of the side walls or bottom (it differs depending on the drawings used when making the barbecue with your own hands). If the air flow is carried out through the bottom, then it is important to provide an additional lower box for the ash.
  • Part of the box is cut out.
  • Then the lid and partition are welded.
  • Drill holes for the rods with a diameter of 13 mm.
  • In long walls it is worth making cuts for skewers. It’s good if you alternately cut grooves 6-8 cm long and 3-5 cm long. This way you can set the desired height of the skewers above the coals.
  • We get a barbecue ready for use: add firewood, add water and test.
  • The next stage involves studying photos of barbecues from the “Remontik” portal or creating an independent frame where the barbecue, assembled with your own hands, will be installed. This frame is made from metal profile and corner using a bolted or welded connection. Its design should include shelves for firewood, dishes and utensils.
  • If you decide to make a barbecue with your own hands from metal of insignificant thickness so that it can be taken outdoors, you don’t have to use the frame drawings, they will not be useful to you. It’s good if we weld short pieces at the corners of the bottom metal pipe up to 25 mm in diameter into which the pipe will be inserted smaller diameter(up to 20 mm) or pipe sections as legs. You need to select their length based on your own needs.
  • It is worth welding rod handles to the top of the short walls of the grill for ease of carrying.
  • The roof, which is installed over the barbecue, will protect the fireplace from rain and snow. It is not difficult to make; it is enough to provide several ceilings and side posts, on which the roofing iron is subsequently laid.
  • Don’t forget to decorate your work with various forged decorative elements that you can buy in the retail chain. Then the frame and the product are protected with a special metal brush and heat-resistant paint is applied. Once drying is complete, making a metal barbecue with your own hands is considered complete and you can start frying the kebab.
While working, you will be able to correct the drawings and make a barbecue with your own hands that best meets the aesthetic and technological requirements.

Make a collapsible barbecue out of metal with your own hands

If you plan to transport an all-metal dimensional box, then think about creating a collapsible structure by familiarizing yourself with our diagrams. Such products are easy to repeat, compact and quite durable. Plus, you can assemble a portable device in a few minutes. We invite you to familiarize yourself with the drawings and detailed diagrams that will allow you to create a barbecue with your own hands. Photos of the process and step-by-step instructions will help you understand the smallest details.

Scheme of a collapsible barbecue

For work you will need exactly the same tools and materials as for the manufacture of a solid welded structure. Additionally, you can stock up on reinforced metal scissors, fasteners and a set of dies. Are you ready to start creating a collapsible grill with your own hands? Our detailed instructions will not allow you to make a mistake. Decide on required sizes products, taking into account the size of the trunk of your car. We offer the best option that is suitable in most cases:

  • length – 600 mm (suitable for six servings, and if necessary you can increase it at the rate of 100 mm per skewer);
  • width – 300 mm;
  • wall height – 150 mm (under the grate there will be a distance of 20 mm);
  • the height of the support legs is 600 mm (it’s good if the length of the legs completely coincides with the width of the barbecue, because you are looking for a compact design).

Typically, any do-it-yourself model of a collapsible barbecue, the creation video of which you will see below, includes the following elements:

  • frame made of metal corner;
  • lateral and longitudinal sides;
  • fasteners;
  • grate.

Step-by-step instructions for a collapsible barbecue grill

  • To create a frame from the corners, you need to weld a rectangle of the desired size (if you take the dimensions of the barbecue as a basis, you should weld a frame with your own hands 570 mm long and 230 mm wide). At the corners of the structure you need to weld 50 mm sections water pipe having outer size at 17 mm. In the future they will be inserted into the support legs.
  • The legs require four pipes with internal diameters of 18-20 mm. It makes sense to install plugs on the side of the pipes that will be pushed into the ground.
  • Cut out the side elements and the bottom of the structure from a metal sheet, cut grooves in them and drill holes.
  • In strict accordance with the barbecue diagram, bolt the bottom to the frame. To do this, you need to drill holes by laying a frame of corners on the base of the structure.
  • A grate welded from reinforcement or rod with a diameter of 8-10 mm can be used as grates. At the edges of the grate, weld legs 20 mm long from the same material.
  • Secure the sides to four knitting needles (rods). To do this, at their ends you need to cut threads for wing nuts and weld the rods to the bottom and top sides of the short walls. If you do not have the opportunity to use welding, you can fasten the spokes with horseshoe bolts. All bolts must be installed on the fireplace side to prevent sintering of their threads.
  • To assemble the structure of such a barbecue with your own hands, you do not need instructions - the process is extremely simple. It is enough to fix the bottom on the legs, then get the protruding ends of the spokes into the slots on the sidewalls and tighten them with special wing nuts. Upon completion of fixing the assembled sidewalls to the base of the grill and installing the grate inside, the process can be considered complete.

DIY barbecue from a gas block or barrel

Propane tank or metal barrel- excellent objects for making a stationary barbecue. This design has several manufacturing options - both with and without a hinged lid. If you are planning to build a barbecue from a barrel or a cylinder with your own hands, then we recommend that you start with a drawing. In order to help, our construction portal “Remontik” offers to study a similar design diagram, where you can introduce the necessary changes.

We will not write about the necessary tool, since you already know what you need to have on hand. Among the materials you will need the same rods, pipes and corners.

A grinder can help you start creating a barbecue from a cylinder with your own hands. With its help, you can cut a barrel in half its length, height, or cut off the spectrum from its side. In the future, it can act as a grill cover.

Subsequent work must be performed in the following sequence:

  • The stand is made by bending a pipe in a semicircle, and then welding the legs to it. If you cannot bend the pipe, you need to weld two corners that are at an angle to each other, and then weld supports to their edges. As a result, there should be two structures, presented in the form of the letter M. All elements are connected to each other by a welded grid of rods, which as a result will act as a shelf for fixtures and firewood.
  • Half of the barrel needs to be placed on a stand and then welded.
  • With the help of a metal corner, the cut is refined - it carries not only an aesthetic load, but can also provide additional convenience when laying skewers.
  • If you plan to use the grill as a grill, then weld racks on the sides of the barrel or stand for its installation. For barbecue inside barrels (cylinders), you need to weld the brackets intended for installing the grille.
  • At the bottom of the side walls you need to drill holes with a diameter of 12-15 mm for air flow. It's better to do them in a checkerboard pattern.
  • An option is possible when the barrel is made on a stand so that its front cut is much lower than the back. In this case, the high back wall will protect the fireplace from the wind. In this case, you do not have to refine the cut with a corner - just carefully clean the edges with a grinder. A horizontal grate installed along the front cut line will serve for barbecuing, and to cook shish kebab, you will have to weld a shelf on the high rear wall to accommodate skewers 5 cm wide.
  • As a rule, installing the cover does not cause any difficulties. It is attached to the barrel with several strong loops. The processed edge of the lid makes the entire structure even neater.
  • A barrel with a lid can also be used as a smoking room. To do this, you need to attach to its side chimney. You can design the barrel in advance so that you can attach a pipe to the filler neck of the container.

They will help you make your grill more beautiful decorative elements in the form of flowers, curls and leaves, purchased at the construction market or made with your own hands. The roof and antique-style metal wheels, which will help with its transportation, will give the barbecue structure a magical look. In other words, you can have unlimited scope for creativity.

Attention! If you decide to make a barbecue from a gas cylinder with your own hands, weld several corners with a shelf of 50-80 mm along its bottom. This way, the coals will be evenly distributed over the surface of the bottom, without collecting in a thick layer in the center.

Metal finishing

Upon completion of the work, the metal grill must be cleaned of rust using a metal brush. Place it on a grinder or drill. Welded joints must be cleaned with an emery wheel of a grinder.

Then the outer surfaces are degreased and painted with special heat-resistant varnishes and paints. Decoration in the form of curls and leaves can be ennobled with cobwebs, giving them the appearance of ancient products. No need to paint inner part products. Also, do not clean the side of the carbon deposits that appeared during operation. It is believed to have a positive effect on the quality of prepared foods.

Make a brick grill with your own hands

A stationary brick grill, made with your own hands, is distinguished by its solidity - it has thick walls that retain heat for a long time and allow you to cook a barbecue or a wonderful kebab with your own hands without the risk of burning the meat. Sometimes the design of barbecue grills is a single whole with a patio and gazebo, being a whole complex that complements the style of the garden plot. Having built this grill, you can cook not just shish kebab, but also cook shurpa, fish soup, pilaf and smoke fish or poultry.

However, due to the solidity of brick barbecues, their significant drawback arises - they must occupy permanent place. You won't be able to move it or hide it in the far corner. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully select its location.

Step-by-step construction of a brick grill with your own hands

Like any other structure, a barbecue needs a foundation. The ideal solution in this regard it will be strip foundation with a pit depth of up to 0.6 meters. It is filled with stone or large crushed stone and filled with cement-sand mortar. A foundation of rubble stone (up to 0.3 m in height) must be laid above the ground surface. For such a fireplace the best option it will be colorful kiln brick or a natural stone. Stone masonry is quite complex and requires experience. But be that as it may, you can build a brick grill with your own hands, the main thing is to do the work without haste and carefully.

Before starting construction, we recommend that you carefully study the design of such a barbecue. Typically, they all consist of a firebox with a low chimney. A grate is installed inside it, under which there is an ash pit chamber (several or one), closed with an ash pan. Under the ash pit you need to create a niche for storing firewood.

To build a brick barbecue you will need: 400 pieces of bricks, river sand, clay, several grates, a copper hood for the hood, a corner 40x40 mm and 30x40 mm, doors or ash pan valves.
  • You need to choose a place for the stove - under the canopy of the gazebo or in an open space. The composition of the solution directly depends on this. For the first option, you will need heat-resistant cement, and for the second, clay mortar is also suitable.
  • Take care of the foundation.

Barbecues allow you to carry out the process of preparing delicious and unusual dishes outdoors. They can be purchased in stores or made by yourself.

Rules for creating a barbecue

The best material for forming this structure is metal, which durable and resistant to high temperatures and other factors. Individual parts of the structure can be connected in different ways, but welding is considered the best choice for these purposes.

The grill can be equipped with:

  • firebox for heating food;
  • special cavities designed for drying firewood;
  • shelves for ketchup and all kinds of spices.

Before creating a barbecue, you need to decide:

  • whether it will be or not dismountable;
  • how many people the product will be intended for, since its size and the number of skewers that can be used in it at the same time depend on this factor;
  • what service life do future owners of the product expect, and this factor influences the choice of metal;
  • what appearance the structure will have.

Product sizing

The dimensions of the future barbecue are a very important parameter, since the comfort and ease of use of the element depends on the correctly selected dimensions. If it is used by a family of 4 people, it can be used standard grill 60×35 cm, however, for a larger number of people it is advisable to make a more spacious design.

Making any option from metal is quite simple, so you can do welding yourself.

It is important to decide how many skewers should be on the grill at the same time. To others important parameter is structure depth, which should be approximately 150 mm, since then there remains an ideal gap for cooking between the meat and the coals in the grill.

The height of the structure should be suitable for the person who will be cooking.

Selection of materials for creating a barbecue

It is important to choose a metal that will ensure the longest service life of the final structure. The thinner the metal, the shorter the service life of the product. Do not use sheets whose thickness is less than 1 mm, since it is impossible to get a reliable grill from them.

To make a grill, you need to prepare the following materials and tools:

  • metal sheets of suitable thickness and size;
  • metal corners from which the legs for the barbecue will be created;
  • machine for welding metal elements;
  • electric drill;
  • grinder, which must be equipped with special discs designed for cutting metal;
  • set of electrodes;
  • measuring instruments, which include a tape measure, a level and a standard ruler.

Additionally, you need to prepare drawings, which can be taken from the Internet or created with your own hands.

Technology for creating a barbecue using welding

It is important to decide whether the design will:

  • stationary, which will be installed in a specific location on the site and will not be moved;
  • portable, which can be easily transported and transferred from one place to another.

Welding is used when it is necessary to make a stationary structure.

The process of creating a barbecue:

  1. Initially, you need to make cuttings, after which the lines are drawn on metal sheets, and it is important to focus on a previously prepared drawing.
  2. Next, all the main parts of the future structure are cut out of the metal in accordance with the markings that are applied to the sheets. The result is a bottom, which is the largest element of 4 side parts, 2 of which are long and 2 are short.
  3. In the two long side elements you need to make special holes with your own hands, which are drilled in one row. They will provide supply of oxygen to coals, then the necessary heat in the structure will be maintained. The distance between individual holes should be approximately 55 mm, and to the edge should be at least 25 mm.
  4. Next, all the side parts are welded to each other, so that the result is a rectangular structure that does not have a lid or bottom.
  5. On the upper edges of the long walls you need to make special cuts, for which you use a grinder with an attachment designed to work with metal products. It is advisable to simultaneously perform cuts on both sides at once so that they fit together. In this case, the cuts will align, so no problems will arise in the future when laying skewers.
  6. The next stage is considered quite complex, since connected together the sides are welded to the bottom of the future barbecue. Here you need to know how to use a welding machine.
  7. For the received box of the future barbecue it is necessary weld the legs, which are created using metal corners. These elements can be welded along the corners of the resulting structure or at the end of the bottom. The lower ends should be slightly sharpened, then the grill will stand stable and secure.

Summer is coming, which means it's time to get ready for outdoor recreation. To ensure that your vacation is always comfortable, we recommend making a barbecue with your own hands from metal, because it is difficult to imagine such a vacation without a well-fried kebab. This device can be purchased at almost any hardware store, but if the cost/quality of factory-made products is not suitable, then you can makeDIY metal grill.

Advantages of iron barbecues

Making a barbecue

The work will require the following tools:

  • Sheet steel;
  • grinder, wheels for it;
  • electric drill;
  • roulette;
  • (or tie bolts).

Let's look at the process of creating a traditional metal barbecue.

Stage 1. Plan

First, a plan is drawn up - a small diagram of the future product. In the diagram you need to describe the kebab maker in as much detail as possible and indicate the dimensions of each part. The most convenient is a grill with a height of 85 cm and a roasting pan size of 40x80 cm.

In addition to drawing up a diagram, you should take care of consumables.

Note! It is undesirable to use too thick sheets of steel, otherwise the structure will be difficult to lift. The steel should be between 0.4 cm and 1 cm thick.

Stage 2: Consumables

Below are the components for making a kebab bar with a height of 85 cm.

Supports:

  • 4 iron legs 65 cm long from a corner or pipe ø2.5 cm;
  • a pair of angles or pipes ø2 cm for horizontal connection of the legs (each such connection will be 76.5 cm in length).

Dutch oven:

  • two walls measuring 77x20 cm, made of sheet steel;
  • a pair of cross walls 39x20 cm;
  • metal grid 39x77 cm;
  • a pair of transverse pipes for the bottom of the structure, 39 cm long;
  • two iron handles for convenient transportation;
  • several fireclay bricks.

Note! Instead of a mesh with crossbars, you can use one solid sheet of 39x77 cm.

You will also need a lid of the appropriate size with longitudinal edges curved inward.

Stage 3. Welding work

Step 1. First, the body is welded from the walls and bottom (the use of bolts will be discussed below).

Step 2. The legs are welded to the body.

Step 3. The legs are strengthened with a longitudinal connection, preferably at a height of 15 cm - this way there will be a reserve between them for storing firewood.

Step 4. If a metal mesh was used for the bottom of the brazier, then fireclay bricks are laid. Small holes are made in the longitudinal walls (5 pieces on each side, step 10 cm) to supply oxygen (this will make the wood ignite faster).

Step 5. Handles made of steel wire ø1 cm are fixed on the transverse walls.

Stage 4. Painting the grill

First, let's figure out whether it is necessary to paint the kebab grill at all. On the one hand, it is not advisable to apply paint, as well as other chemicals, to the grill, since the cooked meat will absorb harmful substances. On the other hand, the current products used to paint barbecue grills are absolutely safe.

Note! The only problem can be a high combustion temperature, which can lead to delamination or even burning of the paint layer.

Among all the fireproof coatings for barbecues, it is recommended to choose the following:

  • silicone enamel, which can withstand temperatures up to 600ᵒC;
  • powdered paints are effective, but difficult to apply (need high-temperature firing);
  • oxidation technology.

The last option is most suitable. First, the body is treated with 5% sulfuric acid, then boiled in a solution of laundry soap and boiled for 1.5 hours in an infusion of sodium hydroxide. As a result, a black non-stick layer is formed on the structure, protecting it from rust.

Stationary grill with canopy

Stationary grill with canopy, drawings 1-Firebox. 2-Table. 3-Stand. 4-Canopy. 7-Skewer

After making a stationary barbecue, it is advisable to build a canopy for it. There are a lot of materials that can be used for this when minimum costs time and money. Unless it is impossible to make an iron structure without welding (if desired, it can be replaced with a tie bolt).

The supports of the canopies are usually welded to the legs of the barbecue, but sometimes there are very large structures (4x4 m), for which four metal pillars are concreted.

Corners of 5x5 cm are laid on top of the posts along the perimeter of the canopy, and on top of them - a metal profile or any other roofing material. If desired, the canopy is decorated with forging.

A wooden canopy is easier to make, but the surface should also be treated with a fire retardant.

Making a barbecue from an iron barrel

If desired, you can design a larger version - for example, a stationary structure made from a barrel. The barrel itself can be anything, the main thing is that its size is sufficient for cooking barbecue.

Note! When choosing a barrel, special attention should be paid to its “past”. If previously they were stored in it chemical substances or fuel and lubricants, then it is prohibited to use it to create a barbecue.

In addition to the barrel itself, you should prepare:

  • steel corner with a shelf at least 4.5 cm high;
  • four rubber wheels (preferably with a metal base);
  • two sets of door hinges;
  • door handle (iron);
  • metal mesh;
  • grinder, wheels for it;
  • welding;
  • jigsaw

Manufacturing instructions

Step 1. Angle sections of the required length are cut. The height of the structure should be approximately 1 m, and the width should correspond to the length of the barrel.

Step 2. The side elements will consist of two horizontal and two vertical racks every. The first ones will be installed from below, approximately 25 cm from the bottom edge of the vertical posts, and from above, at the level of the barrel radius. The racks are laid out on a flat surface and welded as shown in the image - at an angle of 90ᵒ.

Step 3. The second side part of the structure is welded in a similar way, after which both elements are connected using two corners installed at the level of the lower horizontal posts.

Note! Connections must be done with extreme caution to avoid distortions.

Step 4. The wheels are attached to the sidewall.

Step 5. Next on ready-made support the barrel is installed. This must be done in such a way that the drain hole is located at the back and top at an angle of 30ᵒ, according to right side(in relation to the front part). Such a hole will serve as a hood during operation.

Step 6. Using chalk, mark ¼ of the barrel - the lid of the kebab pot. The marked part is cut out with a jigsaw, the edges are carefully cleaned with a grinder and a grinding disc.

Step 7. Door hinges are attached to the quarter of the barrel, after which they are connected to the base - the lid is ready. For ease of use, a door handle is attached to the lid.

Step 8. A pipe of the appropriate diameter is inserted into the hood.

Step 9. All that remains is to take care of interior design. Special holders are welded on the inner surface of the body (iron plates measuring 3x6 cm, although thin corners can also be taken). These holders are installed in the middle of each side, two pieces each.

Note! For convenient transportation, a handle can be attached to the barbecue frame. After this, the structure is painted in the same way as described in the previous paragraph of the article.

Video - Barbecue from a barrel

Find out how to make it, and also consider collapsible and stationary structures from our new article.

If the goal is to create a kebab maker that is not only functional, but also attractive from a design point of view, then we advise you to pay attention to artistic forging. Of course, do it yourself without special equipment and relevant skills is impossible.

Or another option: if it is possible to get the front part of an old car, then it can also be used to make a barbecue. The roaster in this design is placed in the hood. Moreover, the grill already has wheels, so you can take it with you outdoors (as a trailer, of course).

It is unlikely that in a city apartment there will be room for a full-fledged barbecue, but this does not mean that you should deny yourself a good picnic. For such cases, there is a miniature balcony grill, mounted on the railing like flower pots. The length of such structures is just over half a meter, so they are suitable for even the smallest terraces and balconies.

If desired, the balcony grill can be screwed to the wall or installed in any other convenient place. In short, now you can enjoy a bite of real shish kebab without even leaving your apartment.

In order for the kebab maker to last as long as possible, you must follow all the rules fire safety. Distance from fire to wooden elements the structure (if any - for example, the attachment to the transport handle) must be at least 20 cm. Moreover, all these elements must be treated with an antiseptic and fire retardant.

Previously, when the range of spices was very scarce, burning wood was used to add flavor to dishes. Below are the types of trees and the meats they are best used for:

  • oak – seafood, poultry;
  • apple tree – lamb, beef, pork;
  • grape vine – snails, seafood;
  • alder – salmon, turkey;
  • maple – seafood, poultry, pork;
  • birch – beef, chicken;
  • cherry – poultry, lamb.

There is another option - purchase ready-made coal briquettes in the store. Briquettes provide permanent heat, but at the same time there is no aroma. There is also loose coal, but it burns unevenly due to the different sizes of the pieces.

Before frying, the grate should be greased to prevent food from sticking to it. And lastly: the place to install the barbecue should be cleared of dry grass, branches, debris in advance, and it is also advisable to always have a bucket of sand nearby.

If the weather permits, we love to barbecue outdoors with friends. However, if the weather doesn’t allow it, we also… fry it. But in any weather, barbecue without a grill is not a serious matter. If you have a private house or a summer house, you can make a stationary, solid installation that combines a grill and a barbecue. They are usually made partly from brick or natural stone, partly made of metal. If you don’t want to build something serious, you can weld a metal brazier and place it nearby - in the backyard under a canopy, in the garage, in a storage room, etc. If you are a lover of outdoor recreation in any form, you cannot do without a portable barbecue. And one that will be convenient to carry/transport. This is how to make a barbecue out of metal with your own hands and will be discussed further.

We grill kebabs both when the weather permits and when it doesn’t... that’s why we need a grill at any time of the year

Metal grill size

Of all the parameters of metal braziers, only the height of the walls (side) remains more or less constant: it is usually in the range of 13-15 cm. If you make it smaller, closely spaced coals will burn the meat; if you raise it higher, you will need a lot of coals for normal roasting. And we don’t always have the opportunity or desire to wait until a sufficiently large number of them are prepared. So 13-15 cm is the most reasonable choice.

You choose all other sizes of metal barbecues based on your personal preferences or circumstances:

Sometimes they also make a second plate at the bottom with longitudinal holes like grate bars. This is probably necessary so that the metal on the bottom does not burn out, but it is quite possible to do without this detail.

The designs of metal barbecues are not particularly diverse. This is a roasting pan with legs. The dimensions of the roasting pan and the height of the legs are all changes. There are, of course, real works of art, but there are simpler options for going out into nature.

Making stationary models

There are several ways. They are not very different, but still there is a difference.

Method one: with a minimum of welds

It can be used if you have a large enough piece of metal on which the entire “reamer” will fit. In this case, mark out all the dimensions found above and cut out the “extra” corners. Then carefully trim the bend points with a grinder: it will be easier to bend.

We start everything by drawing dimensions on a sheet of metal, then cutting out the extra corners (to increase the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

Next, we begin to work with the welding machine. For welding metal, 2-3 mm is best suited. Probably, a barbecue is the best product for a novice welder. There is no need to seal the seams here. Holes are even welcome - combustion air will flow through them. Having applied four seams, we get a finished barbecue box.

Bend the workpiece, then weld the seams (to increase the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

If the metal used is thin - 1.5-2 mm, the bottom and walls may bend. To prevent this from happening, they can be reinforced with a corner or profile pipe.

The bottom and walls can be strengthened so that they do not bend due to high temperatures

Next, all that remains is to weld the legs. They can be from corners or pipes. The options are different, but both can be used. See the photo for how to weld pipe legs to a metal grill. By the way, you can use the same principle to make legs for a collapsible barbecue - choose the diameters so that they fit tightly. Or weld nuts to the bottom and cut threads on smooth fittings of the appropriate diameter.

How to attach pipe legs to the bottom of a metal barbecue (to enlarge the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

Another way to make legs from corners or profile pipes. Here everything is even simpler: weld in the corners.

Method two: a lot of welding

This case is suitable for you if you have metal, but it is available in small pieces. Then you simply cut the necessary blanks and then weld them. In this case, of course, you need better quality: their length is much greater.

The second way to make a metal grill with your own hands is to cut all the necessary parts for the box and then weld it (to increase the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

After the box is assembled, all that remains is to weld the legs. There are no differences here. Several options are described above.

Read how to make a metal gazebo for barbecue gatherings

Method three: on a frame made of corners

The sequence of actions differs from the second option. Perhaps it's more The right way: there is a frame that will prevent the metal from bending. In general, such a homemade grill turns out to be more durable. Afterwards the sequence of work is as follows:

  • weld a frame from corners (pictured on the left) or a profile pipe (pictured on the right)
  • You weld the bottom to it, and then the walls.

Well, if you are making a barbecue for yourself, with your own hands, it may make sense to provide a tabletop and/or a frame for laying skewers for comfort, as in the photo below. The top edge of the roasting pan is reinforced with a profile pipe. The reinforcement is welded so that “add-ons” can be inserted. So both the table and the stand for the skewers can be inserted or not as desired.

Homemade metal grill with options: a table and a stand for skewers (to increase the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

And for those who like to do everything thoroughly, there is the idea of an iron barbecue under a canopy. Wonderfully done. This metal barbecue with a roof was made by a novice welder with his own hands. He used this project for training: . Very good idea, and the performance is not bad.

If you are interested in barbecues that are quickly made and do not require special skills, pay attention to.

Do-it-yourself collapsible metal grill

For trips to nature, hunting or fishing, a lightweight, portable, collapsible version is more suitable. There are similar products in stores, but they are made of very thin metal and last a long time. That’s why it’s better to make a portable grill yourself.

There are several types:

  • folding;
  • prefabricated

Folding (folding) barbecues in a suitcase and without

Folding barbecues are most often made in the form of a suitcase. Some come with carrying handles. Others require a separate case or some kind of briefcase-suitcase.

A barbecue in a suitcase is a good idea (to increase the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

In this version, the owner made a metal grill for an existing suitcase. Parts are attached to metal door hinges. They were welded using manual electric arc welding. This particular model has painfully thin legs, but this is a cost of compactness.

Another option for a portable camp grill. It can also be “packed” into a suitcase, but you can also make a bag out of canvas: cheap and cheerful.

Another barbecue that can be put in a suitcase (to enlarge the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

This version has a bottom with folding legs. The remaining parts are placed inside separately. The sidewalls are fastened together by cuts that go to the middle of the height in different directions.

Another design of a folding barbecue is shown in video format.

Collapsible barbecues

They differ from the previous ones in that they consist of separate, unfastened parts. Gathered on site. The assembly methods are different - in some places it’s a few bolts, in others it’s grooves and cuts. No welding is required during manufacture, but you will need a grinder with a diamond blade or a metal saw.

The prefabricated metal grill shown in the photo resembles the children's designer. The idea is interesting, the implementation is excellent. Welding is not needed, but masterful use of an angle grinder is required. If you don’t have a skill of this level, you can difficult places finish it with a metal saw. If you decide to do something similar with your own hands, first make a layout in cardboard. It is advisable to take it the same thickness as the metal you will use. Assemble the finished layout, adjust it so that everything is perfect. Then you can transfer the patterns to metal.

A metal brazier without welding is made of stainless steel (to enlarge the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

The following collapsible grills are made similar to those sold in stores. In them, the legs are made of corners, and cuts in the form of tongues are made in the legs. These tabs are slightly bent. There are holes made in the sidewalls for these protrusions. When assembling, the sides are “fitted” onto the tongues.

A collapsible metal grill - this is easy to make with your own hands (to increase the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

The bottom of this model of prefabricated barbecue is not fixed by anything. Bottom part the sidewalls are bent inward by 3-4 mm. After fixing them on the legs around the perimeter, you get a side. The bottom is placed on this side. Having experience in operating this particular model, I can say that the structure turns out to be quite shaky and you need to handle it carefully: once you install it, you won’t move it, otherwise everything may fall apart. But our grill is made of very thin metal, 1 mm. Perhaps if you use a larger thickness, there will be no problem.

Another version of the prefabricated barbecue differs from the previous ones in that its legs are forged. The sidewalls are attached to them using special plates.

Collapsible grill on forged legs (to increase the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

And you will see the simplest of metal barbecues in the photo below. If you have two pieces of angle and a grinder, it can be done in a few minutes. If you can’t bend it, you can drill holes and fasten it with a bolt and nut.

The simplest metal kebab maker. You can do it yourself in a few minutes

Place it over the fireplace, driving the legs into the ground. Not very convenient, but very simple. It will do in case of a fire emergency.

How to paint a metal grill

If you're really bothered by rust on metal, you'll have to clean it off by hand. It is advisable not to use any chemicals, work only with brushes and sandpapers. If desired, it can be painted. But paints must be heat-resistant, or even better, heat-resistant, because only they can withstand the burning temperature of wood. There are several options:

  • heat-resistant paint CERTA (Certa) can withstand up to +900°C, there is another name for the same paint OS-82-03T;
  • heat-resistant enamel Rust-oleum, can be used up to +1093°C, matte, available in white, gray, black;
  • heat-resistant enamel (paint) “KO-8101” can withstand heating up to +650°C, there are twelve basic colors;
  • Heat-resistant enamel KO-8111 Thermal also has anti-corrosion properties and can withstand heating up to +600°C.

If you want it. They create a downright monumental impression. Even the simplest ones. On simple models You can practice too.

Blueprints

And finally, a few drawings. Change the sizes at your discretion, there is no crime in this.
