The door frame is wide. How to assemble a door frame with your own hands: step-by-step instructions, diagram and recommendations

Door frame For interior doors represents a connecting link between the door passage and the door itself. It is needed as a load-bearing part of the structure, on which the entire power load is concentrated. It is attached rigidly to the doorway, and they are already mounted on it door hinges, extensions, platband and related fittings. It also plays an aesthetic role and can be either a separate element of the assembly or a continuation of a homogeneous structure.

Door frame materials

The door frame, as a rule, matches the material of the selected door leaf. Between the rooms you can put an iron door, for example an armored one, and then the frame will be steel. IN in public places, offices, shops are now installing plastic and aluminum doors, and the frame in this case will be made of the same material. For pendulum, sliding and glass doors The core (frame) can be made of MDF or aluminum.

The following materials are used for the manufacture of interior door frames:

  • Solid block with the selected bosom, that is, the vestibule. The beam must be good quality, dried, without cracks and knots, because the internal tension of the wood between the fibers over time and under the influence external factors may lead to deformation of the canvas.
  • Solid wood. Elite types of wood are oak, beech and ash. Doors made of mahogany are very beautiful: cherry, alder, walnut and eucalyptus. Of the cheaper species, spruce, linden, birch, and maple are used; pine is most suitable.

This material requires final processing: grinding, puttying, firing, painting, staining, varnishing or mastic at the request of the customer.

  • Spliced timber along the entire length of the product using the “mini-chip” technology or laminated veneer lumber from small pieces of wood using the same technology. Retail dimensions – 35x70x2100 mm. This material also needs finishing.

  • Beams made of MDF and HDF. Wood-based material impregnated with medium- and high-density adhesives, covered with natural veneer. The thickness of the beams ranges from 30 to 60 mm depending on the weight door leaf.
  • Fiberboard planks is a pressed layered composite material that has the necessary strength. It is lined with eco-veneer, which is artificial.

Types of door frames

There are several types of door frames.

Corner

A universal box suitable for any type of wall. It is a structure made of decorative casing attached to a frame. The corner frame requires additional sealing of the gaps between the frame and the door leaf.

This will increase sound insulation and eliminate drafts.

End

It is most often used in openings with thin partitions, for example, made of plasterboard. This type of door frames is mounted in metal carcass to increase the strength of the structure. Otherwise, the unreinforced structure will lead to loosening door mechanism generally.

Covering

View of a box consisting of a frame and an extension with a platband. The best option, allowing you not to worry about the preparation, modification and subsequent finishing of the doorway. As a rule, this type of box is already equipped with sealing elements.

Telescopic

It is a set of planks connected to each other in the manner of a construction set or laminate locks. Simplifies the process of adjusting the door frame to the characteristics of the opening.

It does not require gluing elements, as it is joined together with grooves.

Profile configuration

The door frame for interior doors is usually a rectangular beam with a selected quarter for the rebate.

The standard sizes are:

  • Thickness – 35 mm;
  • Width – 60, 70, 80 and 100 mm;
  • Length – 2100 mm;
  • The width of the rebate is 30 mm, and the depth is 10 mm.

The porch can be made in a semicircle or with ribs. For wide doorways, a quarter of 10/10 mm is made in the timber on the back side, opposite the vestibule. IN Lately Increasingly, profiled telescopic boxes are being produced, into the side grooves of which the extensions and platbands included in the kit are inserted. A groove is made in the area of the narthex for fastening the seal. If there is no such groove, then a self-adhesive seal is attached.

It increases sound insulation and prevents the door from slamming loudly when closing.

Box assembly methods

At the time of buying door block The door frame can be supplied already assembled, but most often the door is equipped with special bars made from the same material as the door itself. Sometimes the box has to be purchased separately. Interior box V assembled form has a U-shape, consisting of two vertical bars and an upper horizontal one. To the O-shape, a threshold is added in the form of a lower horizontal bar.

Large and thick boxes are assembled using a tenon joint. To do this, tongues are cut out at the edges of one sheet, and grooves are made in the other sheet corresponding to the size of the tongues. The assembled tenon joint is drilled through, and a dowel made of a denser type of wood is driven into the hole, or the joint is tightened with self-tapping screws. You can also use nails. Wood glue is used during assembly.

For the rest of the wooden boxes, it is enough to cut the bars at 90 or 45 degrees and tighten them together with self-tapping screws. All elements of the box that have decorative features, sawed strictly at 45 degrees. For this job, you need a miter saw or miter box with a hacksaw attached. The hacksaw should have a blade with a fine tooth, for example, for metal. It is very difficult to prepare blanks reinforced with artificial veneer in any other way, because it is simply impossible to putty or hide any other method of inaccuracy. These types include telescopic boxes.

Installation

Installation of the door frame can be done in different ways.

  • Internal method. It is based on fastening the box in several places: in the hinges, under the lock plate and in the wall. In these places, the box is secured using self-tapping screws, after which spacers are installed, and the resulting space is filled polyurethane foam. This method provides a strong and durable fastening, but requires extreme accuracy in calculations and adjustment of the door, because after the foam has hardened, it will no longer be possible to adjust the door.

  • Bolt-on mounting. Reliable and time-tested mounting option.
  1. Holes are drilled in the box.
  2. The box is applied to the opening and the places where it is necessary to make holes in the wall are indicated.
  3. The box is attached to the opening.
  4. The bolts are decorated with plugs.
  • Mounting on hangers. Suspensions are plates attached to the box. After they are secured, the box is placed in the doorway, leveled and secured with bolts in the hangers. This method is applicable only before the finishing of the room, since the hangings on the wall must be hidden with plaster.

Casing box for a wooden house

Houses made from natural wood, have the properties of “breathing” or “walking”. This manifests itself when the wood dries out and the house itself subsides. To prevent the doorway from moving along with the house, and the rigid door structure does not interfere with the “walking” of the wall, a casing (jam) is placed in the place of the opening. There are three main ways to install it.

They differ in different location of the spike:

  • The thorn is a monolith. When the box panels have a monolithic T-shape with a spike in the middle, and a groove for it is made in the wall opening.
  • Into the deck. The box panels have a monolithic U-shape with a groove in the middle, and a tenon is made on the wall opening.

Using a sliding embedding block. This is the easiest way. It should be considered in more detail.

To work you will need the following tools:

  • fifty board;
  • self-tapping screws
  • sealant;
  • roulette;
  • level;
  • construction stapler;
  • screwdriver;
  • chainsaw;
  • block 50/50 mm;

  • A chainsaw is used to cut out a doorway required sizes. In the middle of its vertical sides, select a groove for the block. Using the same chainsaw, cut a block that is 50 mm shorter than the length of the groove. You can use not a whole block, but assemble it from pieces. They hammer it into the groove so that it fits freely, but does not dangle. There is no need to fasten it, it is sliding.
  • The board must be the required width. Cut it to a length 50 mm less than the height of the doorway. A quarter 50 mm wide and 20 mm deep is cut out in the upper part for the horizontal part. On the sides of the opening, staple strips of jute, leaving the beam free so that it does not wrap around the screws. Insert the boards into the opening and level them. Screw it with self-tapping screws 65-75 mm long through to the block, recessing it in the canvas, while being careful not to stitch the block through. The fastening points are puttied.

  • Cut a horizontal board to length. At the top, on a quarter, apply sealant and drive it into place. Fasten the box together with self-tapping screws from the back horizontal board. The distance remaining free above it is under no circumstances foamed, but filled with tow.

Advantages of a telescopic box

In wooden houses, especially old building, you often have to deal with the problem of fitting a door frame to a deformed opening or the width of the walls. Before the advent of telescopic door frames, these problems were solved by using extensions and disguising them with platbands. For the door to function properly, the doorway must present a single plane on both sides. The telescopic device of the box solves the problem of fitting: retractable fragments allow you to adjust the box to any opening thickness.

Sooner or later, every apartment owner has to face a problem overhaul, during which it will be necessary to replace door frames for interior doors. The task of installing a door frame into a doorway does not require any specific carpentry skills, the main thing is attention and accuracy in work.

How to install a door frame, sequence of operations

Any work on replacing door frames begins with studying the width and condition of the walls, the old door and the opening. Often the walls themselves, brick and concrete require cosmetic repairs, finishing and restoration of plaster, therefore, before assembling the door frame, it is necessary to remove the trim and restore the integrity of the brickwork.

The procedure for installing the door frame of an interior door is simple, and its implementation requires several simple operations:

  • They remove the door and saw it hand hacksaw cut in width and carefully dismantle the old box, freeing the doorway;
  • Measure the width of the doorway in at least four places. If you plan to install new door larger width, will need to be trimmed vertical walls opening using a grinder and a hammer drill. But this must be done extremely carefully so as not to break the brickwork;
  • Measure the exact width and height of the new door. Measure the required dimensions of the doorway on the wall, taking into account allowances for the thickness of the boards and the width of the gaps. The total width of the opening will be determined as the width of the door frame of the interior door plus 25 mm on the side for mounting elements and foam;
  • Mark the timber or board purchased for assembling the frame, file the joints on the jambs, pre-sew them with self-tapping screws and try them on the new door. Install the frame in the doorway, check the width and secure with self-tapping screws and foam.

Advice! If you are not completely confident in your skills and precise understanding of how to install and fasten a door frame, you can take part in the process of replacing a door frame with neighbors or friends, do a test cut with your own hands, or watch a video, for example:

Which door frame option to choose

Factory-made interior doors are often produced and sold with a set of door frames of standard width in disassembled form. This option saves you from having to select the width of the frame yourself, but there is no guarantee that the door frame is assembled correctly. Therefore, often a door of the required width is purchased separately, and a board or fiberboard-MDF boards are purchased separately. Standard dimensions of door frames - thickness and width of doors are shown in the table:

In addition, when choosing the size of the material for building a door, it is necessary to take into account that the thickness of the door frame of an interior door is a standard value, but the width of the walls, even within the same apartment, can vary greatly. Therefore, for each interior door you have to check the width of the doorway, draw up your own passport with the dimensions and, if necessary, buy additional elements that allow you to expand the width of the door to the width of the walls.

To make a door frame or door frame of the required width, the following is most often used:

  1. Ready-made profile made of pressed fiberboard or MDF;
  2. A profiled pine board of suitable width, the surface of which is sanded to a laminate quality or covered with a polymer film.

If you have a choice, use profiled softwood boards to assemble the door frame. This material has good workability, high strength, and does not absorb moisture like pressed materials made from paper and wood fibers.

For your information! A self-tapping screw screwed into wood according to the rules will provide 100% of the connection strength; a similar fastener for pressed paper provides 30% of the design strength of the fastener.

In addition, a pine frame will allow you to install heavier doors, for example, from MDF, glass or solid wood. Wood-fiber materials are suitable only for the lightest cardboard structures.

We install a door frame of standard width

Before cutting the vertical and horizontal elements of the box, you need to decide on the method of connecting the boards or timber into one structure. The most durable and easiest to manufacture is the tongue-and-groove joint. To do this, cut out two blanks of vertical posts - the hinged and recessed parts. To the calculated length of the rack it is necessary to add twice the thickness of the workpiece. In a similar way, mark and cut out the lintel beam. On the lintel using a drill and a hacksaw, tenons are cut out at both ends; on the vertical posts, the lintels are marked along the finished tenons and the mating part is cut in the form of grooves. The threshold is made in the same way.

If the width of the wall is greater than the thickness of the box, the boards are built up with additional elements, as in the diagram.

If the width of the opening in the wall larger size box, in this case, an additional piece of timber is sewn onto the outer part of the beam, from the side of the loop or hinged beam, as in the diagram. If the width of the opening is too large, the front part of the box is also supplemented in a similar way.

On the side, the holes are made on the door leaf laid horizontally. After adjusting all the parts and aligning the corners of the box, the joints are glued and connected with carpentry screws. To preserve the resulting geometry of the loot, the structure is sheathed wooden planks– with spacers, carefully remove from the door leaf and install in the doorway.

Door frame installation

The chute will be installed correctly if every movement or alignment is controlled using a building level. Due to its low rigidity, the structure “plays”, so immediately after installation, the box opening is slightly wedged with thin wooden blocks. To prevent the sidewalls and ceiling beams from being squeezed into the frame, use a pair of wooden spacers, as in the photo.

The box is pre-aligned according to the readings of the level gauge and notches are made on the walls; in the future, they will help to quickly restore the previous position of the box. Wooden structure attach to the wall using long screws, For heavy doors anchors can be used.

On the ceiling and vertical posts we drill two holes with an electric drill. thin holes, 0.5 mm less than the diameter of the screw. Next, we remove the loot, punch holes according to the drill marks on the walls and install dowels under 6 mm self-tapping screws.

We return the loot to its place, insert the screws and tighten it by 10-15 mm. After this, using the level we restore correct position box and screw in the fasteners the entire length. We fill the gap between the timber and the wall with foam.

Conclusion

Before the foam hardens, it is necessary to once again check the position of the door frame according to the building level data, and, if necessary, carefully knock in the place of deviation. After the polyurethane foam has gained half its hardness, you need to tighten the screws again and close the caps with decorative caps. After installing the canopies, we attach the platbands.

Greetings, my hand-assed people!

Today I will teach you how to competently and correctly assemble the door frame .

The assembly process cannot be called complicated and can be done by yourself, without the help of craftsmen.

Doors are not easy carpentry, it is also an independent interior decoration that will bring aesthetics, warmth and comfort to your home. We will talk about interior doors, the presence of which will allow you privacy and reduce noise levels. And in order for the doors to retain their functional load for as long as possible, they need a high-quality assembled door frame.

The main errors during assembly can be incorrect taken dimensions, violation of sawing angles. It is important to understand that such “jambs” cannot be corrected - you will have to spend money on purchasing additional parts. Of course, cracks and minor defects can be covered with a wax pencil or other special tools. means, but due to distortions, the load in the door frame will be distributed unevenly, which will lead to a significant reduction in the service life of the door leaf.

Work on assembling the door frame must be carried out with special care and attention. It is required to strictly observe the dimensions of the gaps and do not forget to leave allowances for the width of the cut.

Well, you’ve “created horror” - now you’ll take the money to the specialists :) In fact, everything is not so scary - follow my tips and everything will work out for you!

Door frame components

First of all, you should familiarize yourself with the structure of the interior door frame:

  • the hinged beam is the part on which the door is hung
  • the false beam is the part that meets the door. Into her.
  • lintel - upper “ceiling” beam
  • threshold - lower part

Thus, in order to assemble the door frame, you need to correctly connect all its parts. But before you start, you need to decide on the dimensions and choose the appropriate material. Doors should look aesthetically pleasing and...

Choosing material

I don’t have a definite answer here, since the choice depends on your preferences and budget. I will give examples of the most common materials used for door frames.

MDF doors

MDF is a wood fiber board. The doors are cheap, but they look good. The advantages include lightness and environmental friendliness. The disadvantages are reduced impact resistance, poor noise insulation and short service life.

Laminated solid wood

Glued board or "euro-timber".

These doors do not consist of solid wood, and from glued under high pressure parts. The joints on them are practically invisible. The doors are quite durable and cost little more expensive than MDF. Price and quality are acceptable.

Solid wooden doors

Doors are much more expensive than glued ones. Strong and durable. The disadvantage is incorrect processing by the manufacturer, as a result of which the wood is excessively saturated with moisture.

Doors made of chipboard and fibreboard

Wood-fiber or wood-pressed boards. These doors are very cheap as they are made from leftover material. The advantage of these doors is good mechanical strength, and quite good sound and noise insulation. The disadvantage is low moisture resistance, as well as the presence of a volatile substance in the glue, which has a detrimental effect on health. Another aspect is the complexity of installation, since the screws in such doors do not hold well.

In addition to those described, there are also plastic, glass, aluminum, and veneered ones. Doors with honeycomb filling, laminated, etc.

The choice of material is up to you, but it should be appropriate and practical.

Tool

To assemble the door frame we need the following tool:

  1. Sharp pencil
  2. Construction tape
  3. Building level
  4. Construction corner
  5. Screwdriver or screwdriver
  6. Miter saw, or miter box with a hacksaw for metal or “fine-toothed”

Proper sizing is the key to success!

The standard sizes of door leaves are

  • height 2000 mm
  • width 600 mm, 700 mm, 800 mm and 900 mm

All other sizes that go beyond the scope are usually custom-made items. (I mean single canvases, not swing ones)

You need to add 70 mm to the size of the canvas - this is standard width door frame. If the dimensions of the door frame are different, then the size will naturally change up or down. And we also add 6 mm - this is the technological gap between the leaf and the door frame.

Now you need to check how the door frame fits into the doorway. If it needs to be expanded, then we are not in a hurry to break everything at once. We soberly assess the situation - we may have to strengthen the opening with lintels. If you need to reduce the opening, then we fill it with bricks, or “sew on” bars - it all depends on the situation.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW:

To help you understand what size doorway is needed, look at the formula:

Door leaf size + door frame size + 6 mm tech. gap + 60 mm (30 mm on each side for mounting foam and wedges that will be needed when)

Usually the dimensions of doorways are controlled at the construction stage, but in older private houses (like mine) there are “hard” discrepancies.

The next important dimension is the gap from the floor to the door leaf. Before calculating it, you need to check the level of the floors for the width of the door “swing”.

You can do this in two ways:

  1. Using a hydraulic level

On the side walls of the opening we place marks at the same level. We measure the distance from each mark to the floor plane. The difference you get when measuring should be added to minimum height racks so that when opening the door does not rest against the floor. If you still “miss” this moment, then you can eliminate it only by trimming the door leaf, and this is still a “handjob” :(

2. By using laser level

If you are the happy owner of a laser level, then everything becomes much simpler. We set the level and, using a construction square, determine the curvature of the floors. The obtained values are taken into account when setting sizes.

The minimum gap is 10 - 15 mm, depending on what flooring planned. But it is better to immediately lay linoleum, or carpet, or, and then carry out the installation.

See the table of correspondence between door blocks and openings.

And here's another table standard sizes door frames

Assembling a door frame without a threshold

Let's look at assembling a door frame with your own hands using an MDF frame as an example. We will connect the upper parts at 45°, as this is the most aesthetic way.

1.First of all, you need to trim the parts of the box. This is done in order to eliminate irregularities or manufacturing defects.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW:

If you have to use hand tools, then it is better to use a fine-toothed saw or a hacksaw. Start making cuts from the veneer side so that chips, if any, remain on the invisible side.

2. We “saw” the loop beam and the vestibule at 45°. It is best to do this with a miter saw, but if you don’t have one, you will have to work with a miter box. To avoid unevenness when cutting, the miter box must be secured. We use a hacksaw with a fine tooth.

3. Next we move on to the most difficult part - “sawing” the top of the box - the lintel. You need to clearly set the size and not miss the corners. You can use a tape measure, but there is an easier way. To do this, we apply the lintel to the top of the door and mark the marks “in place” with a sharp pencil. To maintain the technological gap, you can use packaging cardboard - its width is just 3 mm.

4. Mark the height of the loop and false beams. I told you how to find out the required height a little higher. This is the height of the door leaf + the top gap of 3 mm + the bottom gap. If the floors are level, then 10 mm is enough. When opening, the door leaf should not catch or rest against the floor. You should not create a very high gap - 10 - 15 mm is enough for normal air circulation. If the room is damp, then larger values are allowed.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW:

If there is a difference where the doors are installed and there is no way to correct it, then the height of the racks may be different. The highest point of the difference is taken as zero.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW:

We constantly and meticulously check all the applied dimensions before washing down. If the box turns out to be smaller than the canvas, you will have to buy a new beam.

5. After all the components have been sawed down, we assemble the MDF door frame together, having previously drilled the holes with a drill smaller diameter to prevent the box from splitting. For connection we use 50 cm wood screws. It is more convenient to carry out work on the floor, placing cardboard or other material under the box.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW:

When you tighten the door frame, press its parts as tightly as possible, since the screws will stretch them.

Well, this is approximately the result you should get.

How to assemble a door frame at 45° and without a threshold - video

Assembling a door frame with a threshold

The easiest way to assemble. The fact is that the threshold is usually mounted at 90°.

The threshold is mounted on the entrance or “entrance” doors, separating the cold room from the living room. In addition, the threshold gives the door frame additional strength.

Preparing the doorway and checking the floor level are absolutely identical to assembling without a threshold, but further steps have their differences.

So, here are the step-by-step assembly instructions:

1. File the lintel to its original dimensions. The length of the lintel will be equal to the length of the door leaf + 6 mm for the gap. You need to make two such blanks - this will be the threshold. Do not forget to trim the workpieces, since the factory cut may not be even.

2. On hinged and beveled beams, it is necessary to remove the thrust quarter.

To do this, we connect the end of the vertical post and the horizontal one and put a mark with a sharp pencil.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW:

The size must be transferred with maximum clarity so that there are no gaps. Repairing them in the future is not problematic, but it will ruin the aesthetic component of the doors.

We make a cut to a depth of a quarter with a hacksaw or jigsaw. Be extremely careful - don't get caught work surface. On MDF doors It will not be possible to fix the “jamb”.

Then we carefully remove it with a chisel or a stationery knife. We repeat the operations for all angles.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW:

If you use a chisel, then under no circumstances turn it over with its top sharpened side down. When carrying out work, the working part will crash into the material and all the work will go down the drain. The same rule applies when inserting loops.

3. Connect the box. We also drill holes and tighten them with self-tapping screws. The only difference is that galvanized screws are used for the threshold if it is the threshold of an entrance door. They are less affected.

Assembling a door frame with a threshold - video

Door frame tenon connection

One of the ways to assemble door frames is a tenon joint. It's not as common as 45° and 90° assemblies, but it does exist.

The joining of parts occurs through tenon joints (see picture)

Usually the achieved rigidity is quite sufficient, but galvanized nails can be added to enhance the strength characteristics.

Mistakes when installing and assembling the door frame are laughable, and that’s all!

Conclusion

Well, that's all, friends.

In this article I told you how to correctly assemble a door frame and I really hope I succeeded.

Follow my instructions and you will succeed!

The frame is the basis of any door that connects it to the doorway. Since the door leaf is installed on the frame, it must have high strength, quality workmanship and a long service life. Only in this case can you be sure that the doors will fulfill their purpose for a long period and work flawlessly.

What is a door frame and what is it for?

Both at the entrance to a house or apartment, and indoors in all doorways, a block is installed, the basis of which is a box. This element is a support, and the door leaf is hung on it. Not only door hinges are attached to the frame, but also trims with additional fittings.

The door frame must match the material of the door leaf

The frame is made of a material that matches the door itself. It must be massive and resistant to changes in humidity and temperature. This is especially true for doors at the entrance to the house, to the bathroom and to the steam room. For a tighter fit, it is recommended to install seals in the frame.

Rubber seals in box metal door prevent cold and unnecessary odors from entering the house

The door frame is a connecting link located between the doorway and the leaf. For interior doors it is made in the shape of the letter “P”.

A wooden door frame without a threshold is closed with casings

For entrance doors, a frame with a threshold is used. Wherein doorway completely framed. Usually a metal door is placed at the entrance to the house.

The metal frame of the entrance door is usually not covered with platbands, so it is made in the same color as the door leaf

But if the front door is made of wood, then the frame is made of wood.

A door frame with a threshold closes the gap under the door and makes the door panel fit snugly

Also with a threshold is placed and plastic box. For example, for a balcony door.

A plastic door frame with a threshold is always equipped with rubber seals

Types of door frames

Nowadays, construction stores offer a wide selection of door frames, which differ in material, design and components.

Box design

There are four types of door frame design:

  • corner - made of timber and the platband goes around the corner from the outside of the opening. Used when decorating entrance doors;

    The corner box goes around the corner from the outside of the opening

  • end - mounted directly into the opening, the trim is fixed to the frame. Mainly used for interior doors;

    The end box is mounted directly into the opening

  • telescopic - special L-shaped casing. Such a box covers the entire opening on three sides. Installed for any doors;

    The telescopic box covers the opening on both sides

  • hidden - used in offices or entertainment venues. This is a regular frame, but without trim, extensions and threshold. The box is painted to match the walls, it is practically invisible.

    The hidden door frame is painted to match the walls

Material used

To frame the opening, box beams are used, which are made from different materials.

If the doors are plastic, aluminum or iron, then it is clear that a wooden frame will not work, so it is made from the same material as the door leaf.

For wooden interior doors, the frame is made from the following materials:

  • solid wood is the most expensive option, especially when using exotic wood. To make expensive doors, oak, ash, cherry, walnut, eucalyptus, and beech are used. A budget option- pine. When creating wood products, the problem is the presence of knots and other defects in it. If you decide to make a box from solid wood yourself, choose only high-quality timber;

    Natural timber is the most expensive material

  • glued laminated timber - at the enterprise the wood is dissolved into small elements, all natural defects are removed, after which the prepared parts are glued and spliced. The result is a high-quality and durable timber;

    Glued laminated timber has high stability to high humidity

  • MDF and HDF are fibreboards, classified as composite materials consisting of sawdust, wood chips and wood flour. MDF is processed in the same way as natural wood;

    MDF timber is used to create interior door frames

  • layered composites - consist of two or more types of raw materials mixed into a common mass or connected in layers. After manufacturing, such timber is lined with artificial veneer, imitating appearance natural wood. MDF, plywood or inexpensive wood is used as a layer. This material has high strength. If we talk about cost, then eco-veneer timber costs about the same as MDF timber, and more expensive than unpainted pine timber. Its advantage: no need to perform finishing. Eco-veneer makes the timber look beautiful and reliably protects it from mechanical damage.

    Due to the multilayer structure, layered composites have high strength

Contents (additional items)

There are also differences in the door frames in terms of configuration. She may be:

Boxes also differ in the presence of a seal. It is installed around the perimeter of the box, which improves the insulating characteristics of the structure. In addition, the seal has shock-absorbing properties, so the service life of such a door increases. In expensive models, the seal is already installed in the box. Cheaper options do not have it, but you can always install the seal yourself.

The presence of a seal improves the insulating characteristics of the structure

Dimensions

Most doorways have standard sizes, you can purchase a corresponding box for them. When choosing a box, you need to take into account that it fits freely into the opening, that is, it is smaller in width and height by about 3–4 cm.

The maximum standard width of a door frame is 90 cm. It is quite rare, so not all manufacturers produce such products.

Please note that foreign standards differ from ours, so be especially careful when purchasing such a door frame.

U-shaped frames have the advantage: they are compatible with door leaves of any height, since you can independently cut the racks to the required height. And rectangular frames with a threshold are designed for a certain door size.

When creating a doorway, builders take into account the purpose of the room and its size. For the kitchen, a door leaf measuring 65x200 cm is usually used. For the bathroom and toilet - 60x200 cm. Even if the opening in such rooms is wider, most people install doors of the specified sizes, and cover the missing centimeters between the frame and the opening with platbands.

Sometimes it is easier to reduce the doorway than to install a wider door in a small room

If there is a threshold for the doors to the bathroom and toilet, then its size must be taken into account. For other rooms, a gap of 5–10 mm is left between the canvas and the floor. And for the kitchen, if liquefied gas is installed in the house, it is 15–20 mm. The gap between the box and the canvas in its upper part and on the sides should always be 3–4 mm.

The gap between the canvas and the box should be about 3–4 mm

Making a door frame

First you need to remove everything correctly required dimensions, prepare necessary tools and materials, and then get to work.

Opening measurements

The height and width of the opening are measured in several places: at the edges and in the middle. Then the smallest value is selected.

The width of the opening is measured in at least three places

You also need to measure the thickness and diagonals of the opening. If the values of the diagonals are very different, this means that the opening is blocked to the side, its corners will no longer be straight. Then you will have to either align the opening itself, or take this deviation distance into account when installing the door frame, inserting bars into the gaps different sizes. However, in this case, the fastening of the door frame will be short-lived.

When taking measurements, you should take into account all irregularities and slopes of the doorway.

Tools and materials

To create a door frame with your own hands you will need:

Self-production

After preparation, you can proceed to the door frame manufacturing process itself:

  1. Cutting the material - usually ready-made bars are used, in which there are grooves for the blade to enter. The bars are laid on a horizontal surface so that the grooves are on top. The height of the box is measured. If there is a threshold, its thickness is taken into account. Then the top strip is cut to the required length. When cutting the material, you need to take into account the way in which the parts of the box will be connected.
  2. Connecting parts - they can be connected into a single structure in different ways:
    • grooved: this option is reliable, but very complex;

      It will be difficult for a beginner to make a groove connection

    • at right angles: the most common option;

      To create a diagonal connection, you must use a miter box

  3. Treatment - to protect untreated wood from mold and insects, the workpieces must be coated with antiseptics. Decorative processing is painting. The frame is painted after its installation, the color is matched to the tone of the door. Instead of paint, you can use stain and varnish. An MDF box is usually lined with veneer or covered with a special film.

    To protect against insects and mold, the timber must be treated with an antiseptic

  4. Preparation of the side surfaces - on vertical rack places for loops are marked. Using a chisel or electric milling cutter, recesses are made corresponding to the thickness of the fittings. After hanging the door leaf on the opposite side of the frame, a place is marked and prepared for mounting the lock strike plate or door latch.

    Places for hinges are cut out on the side post of the box

Assembly and installation of the door frame

After preparing all the parts, you can begin assembling and installing the door frame:

  1. Assembly - performed on the floor, on top of laid out cardboard. The prepared parts are combined with each other, holes are drilled with a drill and tightened using a screwdriver fasteners. It is enough to screw two self-tapping screws into each corner. After assembly, the door is inserted into the frame and the presence of the necessary gaps is checked.

    When assembling the door frame, it is enough to screw two self-tapping screws into each corner

  2. Installation - the finished box is inserted into the doorway, verticality is checked with a plumb line or building level. All angles are checked: they must be straight. If this is not the case, then you need to adjust the position of the box using wooden wedges.

    The box is leveled horizontally and vertically using wooden wedges

  3. Fixation - the box is secured in the opening with dowels. Then the door is hung and its free movement is checked. After this, the gaps between the frame and the opening are filled with polyurethane foam, and platbands are installed.

    The box is fixed using dowels

When carrying out repairs, you should not forget about changing entrance and interior doors if they have already served their purpose or have lost their presentable appearance. An important criterion affecting performance characteristics doors are correctly selected measurements of door frames. The more accurately the dimensions are set, the longer the door will last, be it an entrance or an interior door. There are established standard sizes that should also be taken into account when repairing.

Dimensions of entrance doors

The dimensions of the entrance doors need to be taken correctly; first you need to figure out what elements it consists of:

  • Canvas. This is a solid or multi-part element that blocks the doorway. It is installed on it special fittings for ease of opening and installation.
  • Box A frame in which the canvas is enclosed and fixed to it. It serves as a transmission link between the box and the wall opening. , consists of three crossbars and a threshold, sometimes the latter is not used.
  • Platbands. They serve as decorative elements for the opening, making it look installed doors completed.
  • Extras. They are installed between the platbands and the box, they compensate for the gap that can occur between the wall and the thickness of the box.

Before you buy an entrance, you need not only to measure the dimensions of the opening, but also to establish using calculations exact dimensions purchased product.

Taking correct measurements

You need to measure width, depth and height. Check their compliance with the standard sizes adopted by GOST.

Width

It is necessary to establish the distance of the narrowest part of the doorway, measuring it from one wall to the second. Usually the wall tapers where the door is located, but if it is the same throughout the opening, then the size can be measured anywhere.

If not already dismantled old door, but you need to order a new one, then the distance is measured from the middle of the trim.

Opening height

To measure the height of the opening, you need to find the lowest point of the opening and from it measure the distance to its upper part. In this case, measurements should be taken at the place of narrowing; if this is not observed, then measurements can be taken along the entire perimeter of the opening.

If you have an old copy, simply measure its canvas, or the distance from the middle part of the upper casing to the floor.

The standard door height is 200 cm, but sometimes a larger size is allowed. Some manufacturers can produce products with sizes ranging from 2.1 to 2.3 m.

After installing the door leaf, you may need.

Opening depth

Its measurement must be carried out at three points located above, below and in the middle. This is necessary to set the widest point.

If there is still an old door in the opening, then it is necessary to measure the size of the frame and the distance at which the wall protrudes from it. Table:

Standard sizes are made within 60, 70 and 80 mm.

Analogue of opening calculation

When choosing a box, you need to take into account the gaps: on the upper side and in width it should exceed the received size by 3 mm, its lower part should be increased by 10 mm.

When installing the box, you should take into account the gaps around the perimeter of the box between it and the wall; they are 1-1.5 mm, therefore the entrance opening is assumed to be 2 mm larger.

The height of the door is determined based on the fact that its standard size is 200 cm, to which you need to add the size of the top beam of the frame, which is 25 mm and the gaps: top - 3 mm, and bottom - 10 mm.

For balcony openings depend on the type of building. For small apartments its width is 68 cm. You can make the width smaller, but it must be at least 61 cm, otherwise it will be difficult to get onto the balcony.

Standard sizes of interior door frames

Their elements are made of pine boards or timber, and on top it is decorated with veneer of trees of more valuable species.

Box thickness

IN standard apartments built in Soviet time, this size is 7.5 mm, so a box with a size of 10.8 cm is selected for them. If the thickness interior partitions equals 10 cm, then you need to install a 12 cm box. These are standard sizes that are accepted by domestic GOST standards. In interior doors from foreign manufacturers, the door thickness range is wider and ranges from 8 to 20.5 cm.

If the thickness of the wall turns out to be greater than the selected frame, then it can be increased by using additional elements or using a compensatory frame, which can be telescopic, expansion or act as a transformer.

To increase strength door design, it is recommended to use .

When taking measurements of interior doors, the thickness of the opening may be different; this is caused by the nature of the walls; they can be load-bearing or installed as partitions.

Height

It is regulated and can range from 190 to 200 cm. These dimensions will satisfy the opening dimensions ranging from 194 to 203 cm or 204-211 cm.

When calculating the height of the future door, you need to take into account the threshold. It can be from 1 to 2 cm, and in the end it can be 208 cm, and without it 206 cm. This is the ideal height that meets the standard dimensions of many door frames.

Door structure width

It is measured from one to the second wall. Between this distance the canvas and two side elements of the box should fit.

The standard width is 800 mm. Almost all manufacturers adhere to this dimension.

If necessary, insert glass into an interior door, he will tell you.

Dimensions of extensions

Extras can be no less important than the box itself. Thanks to them, you can eliminate the hollow section of the doorway.

They come in two types:

  1. Planks with a protective edge. They are fixed in the opening with nails or adhesive base. Their width can be changed by sawing, and their height is 2 meters.
  2. Telescopic extensions. Suitable for solving any lack of width. Their installation is carried out at the expense of special lock, which is a “tenon and groove”. The groove is made in a box, and the tenon is on the extension. Their width is adjustable from the side of the platband.

The feasibility of using extensions can be determined after measuring the width of the doorway.

Dimensions of double doors

Comfortable dimensions for use are door widths of 120-180 cm. If the opening does not allow them to be supported, then the door leaves will be different in width, one smaller leaf is fixed in its place, and the second with larger dimensions is used as a regular door. The latter has standard dimensions, and its smaller counterpart has dimensions equal to 1/3 of it.

The height of such doors can be from 2 to 2.5 m. Depth double doors according to the standard it is from 7.5 to 11 cm.

Setting the parameters of doorways is not difficult if you know in which places they need to be measured. The obtained parameters are adjusted taking into account all gaps. If a mistake is made when installing doors in the house, it can be corrected by filing the frame or , With front door it's not that simple . If there is a large gap between them and the wall, it may be necessary to install a counter box.
