We make a smoking pipe with our own hands. How to make a smoking pipe

Purchased smoking pipes cannot always satisfy all requirements, so it is better to make a unique one smoking pipe with your own hands and feel like a real master. This will require the most simple materials, a little patience and imagination - and then you can get an excellent pipe of a unique and inimitable design.

Making a smoking pipe with your own hands

Making a smoking pipe with your own hands using available materials is not so difficult, but its cost will be higher than the purchase price. Manufacturing will require some tools and materials, knowledge of the tube structure and patience, but even so, the quality of the first copies will be low.

The structure of the tube and the names of all its parts can be easily found on the Internet, as well as a diagram of its structure. If before starting work it turns out that there is no necessary tools, then the manufacture of the mouthpiece and briar will have to be abandoned. You need to take a ready-made block and a standard acrylic mouthpiece, this will make the task much easier. You can order these elements in specialized online stores or on ad sites. In order for the elements to fit together according to the connectors, they must be purchased from the same seller: then there will be no need to sharpen the parts, adjusting them to the desired size.

In order to make a smoking pipe, you will need a minimum set of tools:

  • File;
  • Sanding paper of varying degrees of grain;
  • Set of drills different diameters and length;
  • Vise;
  • Joiner's machine.

A guide for beginners - how to smoke a pipe correctly?

Working with a workpiece

A carpenter's vice is used to work with workpieces: they increase the accuracy and quality of work. Holding the block in a vice, trace the outline of the future tube with a pencil. The excess is cut off with a hacksaw, but then you will have to process it with a file. Grinding the required form, a sanding cloth is also used. At this point this stage is completed. Next they use drilling machine to quickly and accurately make a hole in the tobacco chamber. To make a hole in the channel, you need several drills with a diameter of 3-4 mm. In addition, it must be elongated - finding such a drill will not be easy, you will have to search. Or a long drill is changed by sharpening it to a curved shape. For mortise you will need a drill with a diameter of 7-10 mm.

The drills are specially wrapped in soft material. In order not to make the hole larger than necessary, the depth of the holes is measured: the drill, lying at an angle, should not move to the side. The edge of the briar is carefully cut so that the contour is perpendicular to the smoke channel. It is necessary to mark the axis on the sides of the workpiece in order to maintain accuracy. Start drilling at low speeds so as not to damage the workpiece with a heated drill.

Compliance with the calculated depth of the holes is necessary so that when working with the tobacco chamber you do not make a mistake. The workpiece is removed from the vice, after which the correctness of the recesses is checked. Then the mortise is drilled out: it is important to follow the marked axes. If the drill in the channel goes to the side when drilling, you can correct the axes by changing the shape of the tube. When the hole is ready, the edge of the mortise is ground off with a file. Having completed this stage, drill a hole for the tobacco chamber. To do this, use an already prepared curved drill. The workpiece is removed from the vice so that you can ensure that the axes are installed correctly. After this they start working again. Drill carefully, maintaining the required depth so that the channel neatly merges with the bottom of the chamber. Drill the remaining depth by hand for greater accuracy.

Mouthpiece

For manufacturing, you will need an ebonite beam of the required length. Imported material is used more often, since its quality is higher than domestic. Having drilled a place for the Teflon pin, take out the workpiece and check the correctness of the hole made. Strictly observed required depth holes. Then the mouthpiece is connected to the first workpiece by gluing. This is why they drip epoxy glue to the bottom of the trunnion and, without changing its position on the machine, insert the trunnion into the briar. Excess glue is removed before it dries.

Now you need to connect the mouthpiece to the briar by drilling a smoke channel in the first. You need to drill sequentially, gradually increasing the depth. The drills must be of small diameter to reach the end of the channel. Having reached the end of the workpiece, the drill will come out with reverse side. Now the workpiece is removed from the machine. Check the holes made and clean the workpiece from dust.

Mouthpiece bell

After connecting both parts of the tube, all that remains is to make the bell of the mouthpiece. This is the part of the tube that is directly held in the mouth, so it must have the correct diameter and be neither too narrow nor wide. For this, a special needle is used. Carefully insert the needle into the channel and rock the workpiece until a gap is formed. required diameter. From this moment on, the blank ceases to be a raw product and takes on the appearance of a real smoking pipe. To make it look truly beautiful, you need to do some sanding and polishing.

After completing the main stage, carefully clean the workpiece from residual glue and dust. Having carefully examined the edges of the workpiece and the shape of the tube, mark those places that need to be corrected before starting the final work.

Shutdown

Sanding paper is required for sanding. It's best to take advantage grinding disc. It will ensure a quick and smooth sanded surface, whereas hand sanding will take much longer. If you use a disc, it is inserted into the drilling machine and carefully lubricated with a special polishing paste. This will give the workpiece the desired smoothness and avoid damage during grinding.

Once you've finished sanding the outside, you need to sand the inside holes of the tube. To treat the smoke channel, use thin wooden sticks tightly wrapped in sanding paper fine grain. Do not use grinding paste in the mouthpiece, as it may remain on the walls of the canal.

Now the tube is almost finished and just needs to be painted to give it a finished look. To give color to a smoking pipe, stains are used. They come in several types: water-based, chemical and alcohol-based. It is best to use alcohol or water stains. Chemical products are a mixture of chemical components that will have a detrimental effect on both the product and health. After each stage of polishing, stain is used: in this case, it will be absorbed and make the wood pattern more expressive. To give the mouthpiece and briar different colors, use different stains.

When painting the tube is finished, it needs to be allowed to dry. Then the areas that need to be given a specific color or shade are painted. When the tube is completely dry, it is ready for use. Having filled the tobacco and lit it, you can feel the pleasant taste of a unique homemade pipe made at home.

The smoking product consists of the following elements:

  • Bowl. Contains a special chamber into which tobacco for smoking pipes is poured. It is the widest part of the round-shaped tube. Bowls can be large (filled with fast-burning varieties of tobacco) or small, for which slow-burning varieties are used.
  • Chubuk. To make this part of the tube, the same blank is used as for the bowl. Through the cavity inside the chubuk (smoke channel), tobacco smoke from the bowl enters the mouthpiece of the smoking pipe. Some bowls are equipped with special holes that allow smoke to mix with air, making the smoking process easier.
  • Mouthpiece. Using this part, the tube and the shank are hermetically connected to each other.
  • Mouthpiece. This part is also called the “bite” because, being the end of the mouthpiece, it is held in place by the teeth and lips during smoking.
  • Trunnion. This is the junction of the shank and the mouthpiece. Considered to be the weakest part of the tube.

Smoking utensils made from scrap materials

Several types of wood are used: cherry, morta (a special type of oak), briar. Some write about the use of pears, but, depending on the growing climate, the raw materials are too humid and do not tolerate temperature changes well. The result is the rapid appearance of cracks.

We will consider making:

  • From cherry - a plant of red or dark burgundy color, therefore it is valued among producers. Sometimes the bark is left untouched, which emphasizes the original woody appearance. And if you remove it, reddish “wreaths” appear. Has good ductility.
  • From morta - oak rock flowing into peat or clay soil. Losing access to oxygen, the tree does not rot, due to which the wood becomes fossilized and turns dark, almost black. Strength and ductility vary depending on the original quality of the barrel. It is considered unique due to its properties, but is quite accessible to carving masters.
  • From briar - a porous growth in the root system of tree-like heather (a coastal plant of rocky slopes Mediterranean Sea). In this area of the plant, moisture accumulates and minerals are absorbed from the soil, so the part is non-flammable and super durable.
  • From the apple tree - the most popular material For homemade devices. Raw materials are always available, easy to process and have good heat-resistant qualities.

A plastic mouthpiece is attached to the hobbies; if you don’t want to bother making one, all you have to do is come up with the desired shape and carve it out.

Another advantage of blanks is that you can find cubes with different diameters chambers and mouthpiece holes. Therefore, you can attach an old mouthpiece.

To make the device yourself, you need to have:

  1. File;
  2. Sandpaper: several sheets from coarse to fine;
  3. Polishing paste and cotton pad;
  4. Alcohol stain.

We will shape it with a file; this is the most labor-intensive stage. Dressing takes a lot of time and effort. Minor imperfections can be removed with a hacksaw, but then you will have to get a vice, and that’s a completely different story 😉

  1. We connect the form with the mouthpiece.
  2. Next, we smooth out the roughness first with 100 grit sandpaper, and gradually move to 1000.
  3. We carry out polishing with a cotton disk: place it in a drilling machine, moisten it with paste. Handle the workpiece as carefully as possible.

To achieve saturation, cover with alcohol stain. A little secret: if you apply the substance after each sanding stage, it will penetrate deeper into the wood and give rich shade. If you take the impregnation different shades, you will get a completely new briar color.

You cannot use “non-aqueous” stain - it is poisonous and should not be in a smoking device.

Previously, such things were made from clay. They had good heat resistance, but they did heat up. Also, their service life is not so durable due to the fragility of the material. Now find something like this (not decorative properties) is almost impossible to sell. Although a good pottery shop will certainly show you how to sculpt it with your own hands.

As promised, we are sharing a unique technology for making paper devices! To do this, you only need 1 notebook sheet.

  1. Place the paper on the table in landscape orientation.
  2. Bend the top edge towards the center by about three centimeters and firmly press down the side of the fold along the entire length.
  3. Bend the top edge another 3 centimeters (towards the center) and press down again.
  4. Roll it into a tube from left to right. We wrap it in the center with electrical tape to give it strength.
  5. Bend the edge of the workpiece that will be near the lips slightly inward.
  6. Next, take the product with your index finger from the thick side, in the place opposite the end of the wrapping cover. Just bend it up.

Homemade paper construction ready!

What provides filtration?

You can regulate and cool the smoke flow using a special replaceable insert, which smokers call a filter. It can be a cylindrical cardboard sleeve, rolled paper or other homemade design. Depending on the size of the filter, the tube itself is made.

Additional accessories

To make the smoking process enjoyable, the following is included with the pipe:

  • Tamper. Using this item, you can compact tobacco efficiently.
  • Containers for pipe tobacco. The factory packaging in which tobacco is sold cannot ensure its safety after it has been unsealed. The ideal container for this purpose is a pouch.
  • A pipe stand provides storage for smoking pipes.
  • Pipe knife. Using this item, the owner of the pipe can remove carbon deposits from it after frequent smoking.

What are smoking pipes made of?

The material for such products can be:

  • Tree. Since the nineteenth century, briar, or heather, pipes have been very popular among smokers. The advantage of such tubes is their fire resistance. In order to save production, craftsmen sometimes use beech and pear wood.
  • Foam. These mineral tubes are predominantly of Turkish origin.
  • Clay, porcelain and amber. Smoking pipes were made from these materials in the past in European countries.
  • Stone. This material used by Indians to make pipe bowls.
  • Metals. They are used to make some parts of smoking pipes: pipes and mouthpieces. In products filled with hashish and opium, bowls can also be made of metal.

Forms

Smoking pipes are presented to the consumer in a wide variety of forms. The key parameter that determines the shape of the device is the volume of the bowl. Depending on this, the tube can be:

  • round;
  • cylindrical;
  • conical

Depending on the curvature of the mouthpiece, the smoking pipe is:

  • Straight. Characterized by ease of smoking and cleaning.
  • Benta. Curved smoking pipe. Its production is highly complex. Owners of these smoking pipes also report difficulties during cleaning.
  • Classic. Such models are made on lathes. They are equipped with cylindrical pipes and round bowls.

Today we will tell you how to make a hand-made pipe at home. If you already smoke, you need to customize this process: cigarettes from a pack and a lighter for three rubles are not a dude’s choice. The pipe is another matter.

I must admit, I smoked a pipe myself – until I quit, of course. It was an interesting matter. Hammering and lighting a pipe is a whole science, we’ve already told you about that. My pipe has always been of interest to others: friends asked me to try it, and in public places(for example, in cafes and bars, before smoking was banned there) I always found myself in the very center of attention, as soon as I got comfortable with my pipe. In general, you probably already realized that a pipe is royal, especially if you made it yourself.

So, you will need:

  • briar (wood);
  • ruler;
  • chisels for wood carving;
  • saw;
  • pencil;
  • drill with different drill bits;
  • compass;
  • polishing machine;
  • sandpaper;
  • cutters – minimum 18 mm;
  • time (lots of times);
  • idea.

Idea

First things first, you need to understand what your pipe should look like. Draw the options on paper and choose the one you like best.

Embodiment

Separate a piece of wood the right size– your pipe will be just a little smaller.

Draw an outer circle - the diameter of the tube - and an inner circle - the diameter of the recess in it, where you will stuff the tobacco.

Now we draw the selected shape on the remaining sides of your block. All that’s left to do is to trim the wood so that the idea is embodied in your block (you grab the tools and work). As a result, you will get approximately what is shown in the picture.

Drilling

You need to drill a hole through which the smoke will enter your mouth.

As you can see from the picture, you first need to measure how deep you will have to drill. Caution: the walls of the tobacco chamber should not be thin, otherwise high temperatures They will destroy your pipe.

The wall thickness of the tube shown in the picture is 8 mm. The diameter of the tobacco chamber is 18 mm, the depth is 30 mm.
In the end, it is clear that dimensional characteristics depend on the chosen design.

Now you need to make a hole in the mouthpiece that will connect the mouthpiece to the tobacco chamber. Carefully drill a hole (a 7mm drill was used to make this tube). Then we change it to a smaller drill (in our case - 3 mm). Don’t forget to test - how well does it blow, is the connection between the tobacco chamber and the mouthpiece established?

Rounding it off

The tube should look like a tube, right? Who has seen a cube-shaped tube? This is some kind of cubism.

Grinding

This will require sandpaper and a lot of patience. Sand until you are happy with the texture.

Let's finish

We connect one to the other and make minor adjustments.
The handset cannot be used yet. You need to polish it - that's what a polishing machine is for.

Smoking pipes have been around for ages. This is a very popular item produced in different styles: From "Player" to "Church Guardian". How to make your own smoking pipe?

I don't smoke, so I just made it for fun. There are many ways to make a smoking pipe with your own hands. You can drill it out lathe from the halves and then join them together, you can cut it out of wood and then drill a channel from the leg to the other end. But in this simple step by step guide we will cut two identical shapes from wood and use a Dremel to cut out inner part, and then glue the two halves together.

Step 1: Cut out the tube

Print the PDF file on an A4 size sheet of paper. Cut out the stencil and draw it twice on a 2 cm thick piece of wood. When you draw the outline of your homemade smoking pipe, it is very important to make sure that the barrel is parallel to the grain of the wood.

If you draw it perpendicular to the grain, the tube will be very fragile and will probably break. Next, cut out two shapes. For this I used band saw, but you can use a jigsaw or whatever you have on hand. Files

Step 2: Drill the bowl

You will need a 2 cm drill, a drilling machine ( regular drill will also work, but it may not turn out so neatly), as well as a clamp. Align the two halves and pinch them at the bottom. Then draw a straight line from the top right corner to the bottom left. Draw another line from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. Where both lines intersect and you need to drill a hole. Place a 2cm drill bit into the drill press and drill so that the tip of the bit goes straight into the center of the bowl. Go down 2.5 cm and stop there.

Step 3: Create a Duct

I have attached a picture for this step - this is a diagram of the ductwork that you will cut out. Copy it onto the tube halves so that when you fold them in half, the duct pattern will be on the inside. Use a Dremel to cut out the duct, but don't make the groove too deep. Once you are done with the cutting, line up the two halves of your tube so that the air duct is on the inside. Place your lips on the end of the barrel and blow. If the air flows easily, then you are ready to move on to the next step. If not, keep cutting until you can blow air through the barrel.

Step 4: Glue the halves together

Get some strong wood glue and put some in the places where you didn't cut anything and put a very small amount of glue on the trunk because when you join the two halves together the glue will want to seep into the duct and block it.

Press the two halves together or place them in a vice for a few hours. Once the glue is completely dry, remove the tube from the vice and blow hard into it. If you were able to do this, then you are ready to move on. If not, place the tip of a flat-head screwdriver on the seam where the tube halves meet and tap the screwdriver with a hammer to separate it into pieces. Sand off all the glue and cut the duct a little deeper, then try to glue the halves back together.

Step 5: Cut out the trunk

You can use a hacksaw or band saw for this step. I chose a hacksaw because I could control it better. Mark a line on each side of the trunk, marking what you want to cut. Make sure the barrel you blow into expands at the end. The wider end will be easier to fit in your mouth. Place the tube in a vise and tighten it from the bottom. Carefully cut out each line you drew.

Step 6: Sand the barrel

Use a Dremel to cut the corners of the trunk. Continue cutting the stem until you think it looks good. Use 80 grit sandpaper and lightly sand the barrel. Next, take 150-grit sandpaper and go over the barrel again. Continue increasing the grit until you reach 500 grit.

Step 7: Cut and Sand the Bowl Section

I held the tobacco pipe in a vise and cut off all the corners of the bowl with a hacksaw. Be very careful not to cut off too much. Once all the corners are cut, take 80 grit sandpaper and sand the entire bowl. You can sand by hand, but it will take a very long time, so I recommend using proper power tools. Once I was done with the 80 grit sandpaper, I decided to sand by hand and took a piece of 150 grit sandpaper. Raise the grit as you did when sanding the barrel.

Step 8: Finishing the finishing touches

I used wood stain to give my pipe some character. But don't paint it if you plan to smoke, because when you light the pipe it will catch fire. Next I coated it with varnish. Once again, if you are going to smoke from this pipe, do not use varnish, stain, etc. I only used varnish because I don't intend to smoke.

If you're looking for a finish that won't catch fire, try mineral oil. Mineral oil is a safe product and can be used to finish smoking pipes. Apply a little mineral oil on a piece of 1500 grit sandpaper and go over the tube with this sandpaper. Once the entire tube is sanded, polish it with a rag or paper towel. Now everything is ready! Enjoy your new handset.

Smoking tobacco is very popular, despite all the warnings from doctors. There are many different ways do this, but the pipe enjoys special recognition. This item became famous around 1493, after the discovery of America by Columbus. The first Indian pipes were shaped like the letter “U”. The smoke from the tobacco burning in them was drawn through the nostrils.

A little about the device

Modern beautiful,carved smoking pipeshave a completely different, long-established structure. It has three main parts:

    bowl;

    chibouk;

    mouthpiece.

There is a tobacco chamber in the bowl where combustion occurs. Through a small hole in the base of this chamber, the smoke goes into a special channel (chimney), which passes through the chibouk. Then it goes into the mouthpiece connected to it and from there into the smoker’s mouth. Tubes come in many different shapes and are made from different materials and even have some variations in their design.

What is the secret of rich taste

What is so attractive about smoking a pipe? The thing is that tobacco, burning in it, acquires a stronger taste, and accordingly, the smoker experiences a bright and rich flavor range. But for it to open completely, the tube must not only be made of the required material, but also have a specific shape. All this may seem very complicated at first glance. In fact, it is quite possible to acquirehomemade smoking pipe. It will definitely be more pleasant to use this than the highest quality and most expensive store-bought product.

Let's get started: choosing a model

Before you begin, you need to decide on the design of the tube. One important point here is whether it will be with or without a filter. The first option involves the presence of a special chamber in the product where a special smoke purifier will be placed. It is made from paper activated carbon, balsa wood and other materials. Tastes like tobacco good filter does not affect, but only reduces the amount harmful substances in smoke, cools it and absorbs moisture from it. All this, of course, is good, but you will need to not only make a compartment in the tube for such a purifier, but also regularly change used filters. There is a simpler method (it is used in inexpensive tubes). An evaporator (a small metal cylinder with a groove for smoke to flow through it) is inserted into the connection between the pipe and the mouthpiece. It plays the role of both a cooler and a resin collector. Its efficiency, of course, is small compared to a filter, buthomemade smoking pipeIt may well be possible to get by only with the presence of an evaporator.

About the tool

After everything is decided with the device of the tube, you need to take care of the instrument. Minimum Required next:

    file;

    sandpaper;

    any drilling device;

    band-saw;

    set of chisels (forcarved smoking pipe)

    pencil;

    brush.

Blanks

Next you need to take care of the blanks for the tube. The Internet is full of sites where you can order everything you need, the only question is the price and delivery costs. By and large, you only need to purchase a piece of briar for making a stammel (a bowl together with a shank) and a small (about 10 cm long) cylinder of ebonite with a diameter of 1.0 - 1.5 cm for turning a mouthpiece. It’s better not to even try to take these two things somewhere, but only in special stores or from trusted online suppliers. Of course, you can also worry about a decorative ring for the pipe or other similar decorative elements, but for the first homemade product this is all completely unnecessary.

Manufacturing technology

Now, finally, let's considerhow to make a smoking pipeyourself. First, you need to use a file to give the briar the shape of the future stummel. Its outline is drawn on the tree in advance, so it won’t be that difficult to do. The main thing is not to forget that total length the tube should be at least 10-15 centimeters.

Having given the briar the desired shape, they proceed to drilling the tobacco chamber, the hole for the trunnion (the part of the mouthpiece inserted into the shank) and the smoke channel. This must be done carefully, at very low speeds and with regular removal of the drill from the workpiece. Otherwise, it will simply start to burn, and this should not be allowed. It is better to drill the smoke channel first and not all the way, so as not to miss when drilling the tobacco chamber. It is better to make a hole for the trunnion small size(as far as the workpiece allows) in order to prevent chips and cracks on the walls of the cylinder resulting from this process. Then they take up chisels, if donecarved smoking pipe, and at the end everything is finally processed with sandpaper.

We also make an ebonite mouthpiece using a file. This material is easy to process. The main difficulties lie in drilling a smoke channel in it and adjusting the neck of the mouthpiece to the diameter seat in a chibouk. The connection should be tight and at the same time easy to separate with little effort. It is important to know that the mouthpiece is inserted and removed only in a circular motion, and is screwed in only clockwise, and unscrewed, on the contrary, counterclockwise. The final shape of the mouthpiece will be determined only by the imagination of the master.

Even if something doesn’t work out the first time (and this most likely will happen), then don’t despair. It is only through work that one gains invaluable experience. Taking into account the mistakes of past attempts, it will be much easier to achieve mastery and ultimately make a first-class pipe for yourself.
