Magnificent action: how to properly grow an oriental beauty in your garden. Deytsia: “Hydrangea mayor” - planting and care in the Moscow region and the middle zone Deytsia hybrid pink pom

During the flowering period, rarely does anyone not pay attention to it. And many gardeners want to have such blooming splendor on their plots. But this is a southern plant, and many are interested in how to plant, grow and care for it in the Moscow region. You will find answers to these questions in our article.

Deytsia – Asian beauty

Deutzia belongs to the genus of perennial woody deciduous or evergreen plants of the Hydrangeaceae family (for information on growing hydrangea, see). In the wild, deutia is distributed in East Asia, Mexico, and the Himalayas. On the territory of Russia, some types of action can be found on Far East.

A charming deytsia came to our gardens from the east

In Europe, this plant became known thanks to the famous Swedish botanist Carl Thunberg, who, during his botanical research at the end of the 18th century, first saw deutia in Japan and was fascinated by its beautiful flowering. The biologist named the plant in honor of the philanthropist Johann van Dyck, a Dutch merchant and mayor of Amsterdam, as a sign of gratitude for the fact that he financed a marine botanical expedition to East Asia.

Since the end of the 19th century, when Dutch merchants introduced Japanese and Himalayan species of deutia, these beautifully flowering shrubs have become the subject of admiration for European gardeners. And at the end of the century, plants brought from Chinese lands appeared in the gardens.

Description and types

Deutia bushes, evergreen or deciduous, come in erect or spreading forms. The height of the plants, depending on the species, varies from 0.4 to 4 m. The leaves are simple, opposite. At the beginning of spring, the shrub is beautiful with its fresh greenery, but the true beauty of Deutia is revealed during flowering, when exquisite white, purple or pink flowers, collected in apical racemes, abundantly cover the bush. Unfortunately, the flowers have no scent.

There are many varieties of deutia, which differ in the height of the bush, the shape and shade of flowers and leaves.

Shrub at good care lives up to 25 years.

In nature, approximately 70 species of deutia are known, which differ in the height of the bush, size, color and shape of flowers. To decorate gardens and parks, there are many beautiful decorative hybrid varieties plants obtained by crossing “wild” species. But in the conditions of central Russia, not all of them can withstand fairly harsh winters. Therefore, to land in the Moscow region you need to choose winter-hardy varieties or hybrids that are hardy and will be able to overwinter with little shelter, and again delight with beautiful flowering in the spring.

The most popular types of action for the middle zone

Deytsia Amur (small-flowered)

IN natural environment this shrub grows in the Far East in China and North Korea. Habitats: oak and coniferous-deciduous forests. In Russia, Deutzia Amur is protected in the Far Eastern nature reserves.
Deytsia Amur is a spreading shrub reaching 2 m in height.

Deytsia Amur

The bark on young shoots is brown, but becomes gray over the years. It has elliptical, finely serrated leaves, drooping and pointed at the ends, the length of which is 5-6 cm. In spring and summer, the color of the leaves is bright or grayish-green, and in autumn it changes to brown-yellow. The shrub sheds its leaves in winter.

The flowers are medium-sized white, collected in corymbose inflorescences with a diameter of 6-7 cm. The bush blooms in 2-3 years of life and the beautiful inflorescences, generously strewn with branches, delight the eye for almost 2 months: from May to early June. By autumn, the flowers ripen into fruits - spherical dark yellow boxes with small seeds.

Deytsia graceful (slender)

The most spectacular of the plant species introduced into cultivation. It is a round-shaped bush, up to one and a half meters in height. The branches are decorated with light green oblong lanceolate leaves, covered with sparse hairs on top. By autumn the leaves turn beautifully yellow, and by winter they fall off.

Deytsia graceful

Deutzia graceful blooms very beautifully. Since the end of May, its branches are literally covered with multi-flowered snow-white erect paniculate inflorescences, the length of which is 10 cm. This species can withstand the winter quite well, but it must be covered, and the best shelter for it will be a snow blanket.

Deutzia Lemoine

This is an excellent winter-hardy hybrid of Deutia Amur and Deutia graceana. It is a bush up to 2 m in height. Blooms early and abundantly. Bushes with paniculate inflorescences 9-10 cm long, collected from numerous white small (up to 2 cm) flowers, look very impressive and rich.

Deutzia Lemoine

Deutzia purpurea

A shrub 0.6-2 m high with thin broad-lanceolate green leaves up to 5 cm long, very beautiful during flowering - from early June to July.

Flowers, up to 2 cm in diameter, come in all shades of pink and purple, 6-12 pieces are collected in inflorescence-baskets.

Deutzia purpurea

Deytsia purpurea is a very spectacular and picturesque shrub, and although in the conditions of the Moscow region it is poorly adapted to the frosty winter and to preserve it you need to tinker, protecting it from the cold, but it is worth it - next year it will thank you for your care and again give beautiful flowers.

Planting: where, when and how to plant action

Deutia is a light-loving shrub, but does not tolerate direct sunlight and drafts, so it is better to plant it in the partial shade of the crowns of large trees and in a place protected from the wind. Also, the bushes need space, which means that there should be no nearby tree or building at a distance of about 2 m around it.

For good growth and development of shrubs, soil that meets certain requirements is needed, namely:

  • nutritious;
  • slightly moisturized;
  • with a slightly alkaline reaction;
  • well drained;
  • loose.

A good place for the action would be an area in the shade of the house

If the soil on the site does not meet the requirements, then when planting you should fill the hole with the following composition: humus, sand, peat compost, taken in the proportion: 2: 2: 1. If the soil on the site is acidic, before planting you need to add slaked lime, approximately 300-350 g, into the hole.

It is best to plant deutia in the spring, since over the summer it will take root well and get stronger before winter cold. The landing time in the Moscow region must be chosen according to the weather. The soil should have thawed by now, but the buds on the trees have not yet bloomed. Seedlings with closed roots (in containers with soil) can be planted until the beginning of June.

Advice! For better growth and the development of the bush, it is advisable to shorten each shoot of the seedling to 4-5 buds after planting.

Now the main thing: how to plant shrubs correctly:

Mulching the soil around the bush

  1. Dig a hole approximately 50 cm deep.
  2. Place a layer of drainage on the bottom - fine crushed stone, sand, broken brick.
  3. Lightly sprinkle the drainage with the soil mixture described above, after adding 100 g of nitrophoska to it.
  4. Lower the roots of the seedling into the hole so that its root collar is at the level of the soil surface, or 1-2 cm underground.
  5. Cover the seedling with soil (or soil mixture), compact the soil and water it.
  6. Mulch the area around the seedling with a 4-5 cm layer of peat.

Advice! This fit is ideal, but again, optional. If the soil meets the requirements, then points 1,2,3 can be omitted. And, having dug a hole, immediately proceed to step 4.

Deytsia - care, feeding and watering

It is very easy to take care of the action.

The bush does not need frequent watering. For an adult plant, it is enough if you water it once a week with a bucket of water. On hot days, you can water twice a week, using one bucket of water at a time. From the second half of August, watering can be stopped altogether. After watering, it is advisable to loosen the moistened soil, simultaneously removing weeds.

You don't need to water it often

Once a month, the plant needs to be fertilized with liquid manure. To do this, 3 liters of manure are diluted in water for irrigation and this dose must be applied to each bush.

A couple of times per season it is advisable to revive the action with the complex mineral fertilizers– 130-150 g for each bush.

Attention! Fertilizing should only be done during flowering.

Another very important procedure for caring for the plant is pruning the bush. It should be carried out twice a year - in spring and autumn.

Pruning a deutia bush

  1. In the spring, after inspecting the bush after wintering, you should remove damaged and dead branches. If the shoots are poorly preserved, but the root system is “alive,” then cut off the branches completely, leaving small stumps. In the same way, pruning is done to rejuvenate the bush.
  2. In autumn, after flowering, the branches on which there were flowers should be cut back to the first strong bud. You also need to trim off old and very interfering branches. And also “ennoble” the shape of the bush.

Preparing the deutzia bush for wintering

Most types of deutia do not tolerate frost well. Therefore, touching on the topic “action - planting and care in the Moscow region,” one cannot ignore such an important issue as preparing for winter.

Since the plant’s flowers appear on last year’s shoots, for beautiful flowering they need to be protected from frost, and cold winters in the Moscow region require that the plant be reliably covered: snow alone is not enough.

Winter shelter for action

For young bushes, you can use the air-dry shelter method. In this case, the bush must be bent to the ground. And build a hut above it, on which to lay spruce branches or sprinkle dry leaves. Cover it all with lutrasil, and on top of it - a polyethylene film, which will protect the shelter from moisture.

Mature bushes, the branches of which are not so flexible, should be tied together, and a breathable material, for example, burlap, spunbond or lutrasil, should be wrapped around them, which will keep the heat under the shelter and prevent the buds from drying out. This simple method will preserve the effect from frost to minus 30°C.

Action multiplication

Deytsia reproduces:

  • cuttings;
  • dividing the bush;
  • seeds.

Deutzia cuttings

The simplest and most common method of reproduction is cuttings. To obtain cuttings, you need to cut large healthy shoots from an adult bush in July. Then plant the shoots in pots filled with a nutrient mixture at a slight angle, having previously powdered them with Kornevin for better rooting. Sprinkle a little sand on top of the soil, water it, cover the pot with polyethylene and place it in a greenhouse.

When the cuttings take root, they should be planted in open ground. The first year the bushes will be afraid of hypothermia, so they need to be well covered for the winter, as described above.

Young plants can be obtained by dividing the mother bush

When propagating the action dividing the bush, an adult bush is dug up and, carefully dividing root system into 2-3 parts, immediately planted in open ground in a place chosen and prepared in advance.

Propagation by seeds It's also not a very complicated method. Seeds collected in the fall are planted in spring in boxes with prepared soil. Cover with glass and water periodically. In just a week and a half, shoots will appear, and when the sprouts have three or four true leaves and the sprouts are strong enough, they can be transplanted into open ground.

Features and description of the action

Deutzia belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family and is a deciduous and evergreen perennial woody plant. The natural habitat of this crop is Central America, in particular Mexico, the Himalayas and East Asia. In its appearance, the deutzia resembles blooming Japanese cherry blossoms, which are covered with a dense blanket of openwork numerous flowers that exude a wonderful aroma. It is for this decorative effect that gardeners all over the world fell in love with deutzia.

Today there are about 50 species of this wonderful plant. Deutzia appeared in Europe in the 19th century thanks to Dutch traders who brought this crop from Japan. Since then, the deutzia bush has become one of the most popular elements of landscape design throughout Europe, including in Russia.

The Asian beauty received its name thanks to the Swedish scientist Carl Thunberg, who named the action in honor of the mayor of Amsterdam, Johann van Deitz, who invested a lot of money in traveling to the East.

Description of the action:

  • Deutzia is deciduous or evergreen, it all depends on the specific type and variety.
  • In nature, it can be found in coniferous, broadleaf and oak forests, and sometimes even grows at elevations up to 1500 m.
  • This is an ornamental shrub that reaches a height of 0.5-2 meters; in nature, specimens up to 4 m can be found.
  • The shape of the stems that form the shrub can be erect or spreading. Depending on such features, the action can be used in various options when decorating the area.
  • Due to its large branching, deutia lends itself well to pruning, which allows you to create a beautiful crown shape and use this plant to create a hedge.

Most types of deutia were created by crossing the main and most common species: graceful, Amur, rough.

Methods of propagation

Deutzia can be propagated vegetatively and by seeds; the chosen method will depend on your preferences and capabilities. Let's look at each method in more detail.

Propagation by seeds

This method is rarely used. It is suitable for species varieties, since in the case of hybrids all the maternal characteristics of the shrub may be lost.

  • First of all, you need to collect the seeds. They ripen around the end of September or beginning of October.
  • Select the ripest fruits and extract the seeds from them. They are stored until spring, until sowing.
  • IN preliminary preparation no seeds needed.
  • Pick up suitable container and fill it with nutritious soil, which should consist of humus, sand and peat.
  • There is no need to bury the seeds; they are simply sown on the surface of the soil and lightly sprinkled with a thin layer of river sand.
  • The container must be covered with glass or film to create greenhouse conditions.
  • Care consists of constantly moistening the soil.
  • Shoots will appear within 1-1.5 months, after which they are planted in open ground.

Propagation by green cuttings

This method is one of the most common.

  • You need to start harvesting cuttings in June.
  • On a healthy and strong bush, choose thick and mature shoots.
  • Cuttings are harvested approximately 10-12 cm.
  • Before planting, you can treat them with special preparations to stimulate root formation.
  • To root cuttings, select containers that are spacious enough and fill them with nutritious soil consisting of fertile soil and sand.
  • Green cuttings must be buried 0.5 cm into the soil, slightly tilted.
  • All containers are placed in greenhouses.
  • Deutia cuttings have almost 100% rooting.
  • In the spring, cuttings can be planted for growing in open ground.

Propagation by lignified cuttings

The second option for propagating action is by cuttings.

  • For this method, cuttings need to be harvested in late autumn.
  • One cutting should be 15-20 cm in length. And it must have at least 3 buds.
  • The required number of cuttings is collected into a bundle and fastened together.
  • Next, the entire bunch is placed in a container with wet sand and stored in a dark and cold room, where the temperature is approximately 0 degrees.
  • In the spring, cuttings are planted in greenhouses or hotbeds and grown like green ones.

Reproduction by layering

Deutia can be propagated by layering. In the spring, choose the strongest and healthiest shoots on the bush that are as close to the ground as possible. You need to dig small grooves under the bush and bend the selected shoots to them. Next, sprinkle with soil, leaving only the top. After the cuttings have rooted, they are disconnected and transplanted to a permanent place.

Reproduction by dividing the bush

Most often, this propagation method is used for heavily overgrown deutia bushes. You must carefully dig up the bush and use a sharp knife or pruning shears to disconnect several parts. The main thing is that each part has healthy and strong roots. The resulting parts of the plant must be planted immediately in prepared places, since the roots cannot dry out.

Actions may appear on the root system root growth, which can be detached and transplanted to another place. This should be done in the spring.

Stages of preparation before planting action

To get a beautiful and ornamental plant, which long years will decorate your site, it is important to prepare carefully. It is necessary to select high-quality planting material and correctly determine the planting location. Also important is the preparation of the soil at the future planting site.

Stage 1. Selection of deytsia seedlings

Well-selected seedlings guarantee a healthy and strong plant in the future. Purchase planting material from specialized stores or nurseries. It is not recommended to buy seedlings at spontaneous markets or along the roads, as you may end up with something completely different from what you wanted.

When purchasing, carefully inspect the seedlings. They should not be damaged or show signs of diseases or pests. All young plants should have healthy buds. Seedlings can be purchased with an open root system and a closed one. The two options have their pros and cons. An open root system allows you to carefully examine the roots for the presence of shriveled parts; a closed root system allows you not to rush into planting in open ground.

Stage 2. Selecting a location

Deytsia prefers to grow in open areas that have protection from the open midday sun. Slightly shaded areas with nearby trees are suitable. This creates the air humidity necessary for the shrub. The location should also be well protected from strong cold winds.

Before choosing a place for planting, decide on the composition you want to end up with. With the action you can create hedge, or you can use it in single plantings.

Stage 3. Soil preparation

To get a beautiful and lush shrub, select a site with fertile and light soil. It is acceptable for it to grow on clay soils with moderate moisture. Remember, the close occurrence of groundwater is unacceptable for the action. Before planting, carefully dig up the selected area so that the soil is filled with oxygen and becomes looser and lighter. The ideal soil for the full growth of deutzia should consist of compost soil, humus and sand.

Planting action in open ground

With the onset of spring, you can begin planting deutia seedlings in open ground.

Planting process:

  • Add some fertilizer to the soil before planting. Suitable for each plant are 100 grams of nitrophoska and 1 bucket of compost.
  • Prepare the seedlings as well. If the root system is slightly dry, then a couple of hours before planting, place the planting material in a clay mash. You can also lightly trim the roots.
  • Next, take care of the planting holes. The depth of each should be approximately 0.5 m. If you plant several deutia seedlings in one row, then you must maintain some distance between them. Approximately between the holes there should be from 1.5 m to 2.5 m.
  • Place a layer of 10-15 cm of drainage at the bottom of each planting hole. Use broken brick or expanded clay, small stones or gravel for drainage.
  • Next, the roots of the seedlings are lowered into the hole and carefully sprinkled with soil mixture.
  • Remember that the root collar of the seedling must remain level with the ground surface. Allow a depth of 1-2 cm.
  • After planting, compact the soil well and water thoroughly.
  • The last step in the process of planting action will be mulching. trunk circle. Use dry peat or sawdust as mulch.
  • To stimulate shoot growth, you can trim the tops.

Features of caring for action in open ground

After correct landing you only need to occasionally pay attention to the Asian beauty and she will delight you with abundant and lush flowering. Caring for the action will not be difficult, the main thing is to do everything in moderation and not to overdo it.

Watering action

Deutzia is quite drought-resistant, so it can perfectly for a long time do without water. However, flowering in this case will be poor and short-lived. The optimal watering regime for this crop is once a week. In dry times, you can increase the norm to 2 buckets. The main thing is that the ground is saturated with moisture to a depth of 50 cm. During rainy days, you can cover the tree trunk circle with waterproof material, because this plant does not like stagnant water. All watering stops in mid-August, when the plant begins to prepare for winter.

Loosening and mulching action

Loosening is mandatory for action after each watering and rain. This is necessary to saturate the soil with oxygen. While loosening, remove all emerging weeds. To reduce the amount of loosening, the soil around the plant can be constantly mulched. Use dry peat, sawdust or tree bark as mulch.

Feeding action

All fertilizing must be applied only during flowering. Every month, under each bush, you can add liquid manure dissolved in water. 1-2 times per season you can feed the plant with superphosphate or complex mineral fertilizers.

Action trimming

Pruning the deutia allows you to give the bush a regular and decorative shape. This crop requires pruning twice a season: in spring and autumn or late summer. In the spring, it is necessary to remove all damaged and broken branches with sharp pruning shears. Shoots that have frozen over the winter are also shortened.

After flowering has ended, all branches that had flower buds must be cut back to young shoots. You need to shorten it by about a quarter, so it will begin to branch. This procedure must be carried out with a sharp knife or pruning shears.

Pest and disease control action

Distinctive feature action is its resistance to damage by various diseases and the appearance of pests. Only sometimes can shrubs be affected by the proboscis, which damages the branches and leaves of the plant. To combat it, special drugs are used, for example, karbofos.

Shelter for the winter

The main problem in growing this crop is proper shelter for the winter. After all, quite often the shoots of this shrub on which buds appear freeze. Because of this, the action may not bloom. You can cover it with straw and fallen leaves. With the help of these materials the tree trunk circle is closed. You can start insulating in late autumn. Pay special attention to young seedlings. You can also use coniferous spruce branches or any other carton boxes. Some varieties of deutia require more careful covering, for which burlap or spunbond is used. The main thing is not to forget to remove the cover in time in April so that the root system of the bush does not die.

Using action in landscape design

Deutzia is an ideal option for decorating and landscaping a site. A large number of options for using the action are possible:

  • Single plantings of shrubs against a green lawn.
  • Use in creating hedges.
  • Planting together with conifers and evergreens.
  • Landing low-growing varieties in tubs.

Deytsia: planting and care in open ground

After sufficient thawing of the soil, but before the stage of active sap flow. Seedlings with a closed root system can be planted until the first ten days of June. Before planting, it is very important to choose the right growing site. The perennial prefers open areas that are shaded during the midday hours. The culture is very difficult to tolerate gusty and cold winds.

The soil on the site should be nutritious, not too dry, and well drained. The plant feels most comfortable on soils represented by a couple of parts of humus, a part of peat compost and a couple of parts of medium-grained sand. So nutrient substrate the landing pit is filled. If there is acidified soil on the site, slaked lime must be added at the rate of 0.3 kg per square meter. Preference is given to slightly alkaline soils.

When choosing planting material, you should adhere to the following recommendations:

  • before purchasing, a careful inspection of the bush is carried out in order to determine the presence or absence of visible damage or disease on the shoots;
  • plants with an open root system are sold at a lower price, but you need to carefully examine the roots to ensure they are not over-drying;
  • Before planting, you need to carefully trim the branches broken during transportation, and also be sure to shorten the dried roots, then soak the root system in water for a couple of hours and treat with a clay mash.

Deutzia should be planted at a distance of a couple of meters from each other, as well as other plantings, buildings or fences . To the bottom of a pre-dug landing pit it is necessary to fill up the drainage, represented by medium-fraction crushed stone or broken brick, after which a nutritious soil substrate is filled in with the addition of a small amount of nitrophoska. Root collar The plant to be planted must be placed at ground level or buried a couple of centimeters. After planting, abundant watering is carried out, and the subsequent shortening of the shoots by three to five buds. The area is mulched with peat chips.

Features of garden care ornamental shrub:

  • Irrigation activities are carried out weekly, at the rate of a bucket of water per plant, but in very dry periods, watering should be increased by about one and a half to two times. Starting from the last summer month, irrigation activities should be stopped, which will allow the plant to be prepared for wintering. After watering, shallow loosening is carried out, as well as removal of weeds in the tree trunk circle;
  • Fertilization should be done every month. For this purpose, it is best to use organic matter, represented by solutions based on manure or bird droppings, as fertilizers. It is recommended to fertilize with minerals a couple of times per season. complex fertilizers. In early autumn, phosphorus-potassium compounds can be added to improve the winter hardiness of the bushes;
  • In order to maintain high decorative value and improve flowering, it is advisable to carry out periodic pruning of a sanitary and formative nature. The event takes place a couple of times a year. In process autumn pruning includes shortening branches and removing all old or damaged shoots. In the spring, frost-bitten branches that thicken the bush are pruned. If necessary, bushes are rejuvenated by pruning.

The subtleties of growing plants in the Moscow region

The soil and climatic characteristics of the Moscow region suggest some peculiarities when growing deutia in personal plots. Frosty winter period requires the mandatory use of shelter above ground in preparation for cold weather. It is especially important to protect perennials in winters with little snow.

For this purpose, protection methods such as air-dry frame shelter are used. Dry leaves and spruce branches, as well as lutrasil and high-quality polyethylene can be used as insulating material. Tall deutsias need to be tied with breathable materials in the form of spunbond, burlap or lutrasil.

Deutzia fragrant: cultivation (video)

Deytsia is distinguished by its very abundant and graceful flowering, capable of decorating any garden space. Landscape designers and amateur flower growers love the perennial for its decorativeness and relative unpretentiousness, but the longevity of the crop will directly depend on compliance with the care technology.

Deytsia. This decorative profusely flowering shrub in beauty and unpretentiousness it can be compared with such popular and spectacular crops as lilac and hydrangea. Deutzia is part of the Hydrangeaceae family. The genus of this plant, which also has a name, unites almost five dozen species that are naturally found in areas of East Asia.

All deutias are shrubs that shed their leaves every year. Their crowns are formed by erect and slightly curving, sometimes pubescent shoots. In some species, on old shoots the bark acquires a layered, flaky structure.

In the second year, the shoots become hollow inside, making them brittle. This must be taken into account when caring for and covering for the winter.

Simple leaves with entire, serrated or serrated edges are located on branches opposite each other (opposite arrangement).

Beautiful flowers of whitish, pink, lilac and purple shades are odorless and collected in fairly large inflorescences such as a brush or ball. They are located at the ends of last year's shoots. They can be simple and terry.

Deutzia grows on almost any soil and is easy to care for. Even when the bushes are severely frozen in winter, within one season they grow back, actively growing shoots.

For gardeners, deutzia is valuable not only for its elegant appearance, but also for its long flowering (1-2 months). And also because it blooms immediately after the lilac, but before the roses and mock orange begin to bloom, and the garden is decorated with flowering shrubs almost without interruption.

Planting and care

Soil selection

In order for the plant to develop steadily and bloom every year, when planting and caring for it, it is necessary to take into account its characteristics and requirements for growing conditions. Especially great importance has the optimal location of the plant on the site. It must be protected from strong air currents and winds.

You also need to ensure that groundwater were located at a depth of at least 2-3 meters. Deutzia is best suited for permeable, loose, nutritious soil with a neutral (pH 6.5-7.0) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5) reaction. The land at the site of permanent cultivation must be cultivated to a depth of more than half a meter.

If the soil at the planting site is not suitable, then it is replaced with a mixture consisting of sand, turf soil and humus. Moreover, humus and earth are taken in two parts, and sand – one part. Mineral fertilizers with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (complex), as well as microfertilizers or ash, and lime in small quantities are added to the finished mixture.

Landing technology

The length, depth and width of the pit is usually from 50 to 60 cm. When replacing the soil at the planting site, the dimensions of the pit are increased by 20-40 cm.

Planting is done in the spring. Before planting, it is recommended to store seedlings at a temperature of 0 to +2 degrees.

Before planting, the roots of a seedling with an open root system must be straightened, broken, dried roots are cut off and placed for several hours (from 2 to 24) in water with a root formation stimulator.

Container plants are also inspected before planting, and if the roots are strongly fused with each other, bottom part the coma is torn a little and slightly leveled. After planting, container bushes are watered with a solution containing a root formation stimulator.

Caring for action

This ornamental culture, although it is considered drought-resistant and unpretentious, it shows its full beauty only when all agrotechnical measures are performed (feeding, weeding, watering, pruning).

Watering

In hot and dry months, you need to water the deutsia from 2 to 3 times every four weeks, and when it rains, watering is carried out only when it dries out upper layer land.

15-20 liters of water are poured under each bush.

After abundant watering or precipitation, it is advisable to loosen the surface of the soil around the bushes to remove the dense crust. Deep loosening is not carried out so as not to damage the roots.

Top dressing

This shrub is fed 3 times per season. In this case, fertilizing is carried out for the first time in the form of mulching the tree trunk circle with humus (half a bucket per plant).

The second time, liquid fertilizers based on mineral fertilizers with microelements are used. These feedings are carried out until the end of flowering.

The third (last) fertilizing is carried out before pruning. For it, use a solution of mullein, diluted one to ten. One bucket is used per plant.

Trimming

One of the main measures for caring for deytsia is timely and correct pruning.

In May-June, shoots that have frozen over the winter are removed from the bushes.

Every year after the end of flowering, rejuvenating and formative pruning is carried out.

Spectacular flowers are formed on perennial shoots, but the largest number of them bloom on 2-3 year old branches. When pruning, adult trunks that are more than 4-5 years old are cut into a ring or a small stump about 15 cm high is left. Dry and poorly developed shoots need to be removed.

It is also necessary to shorten young elongated shoots so that the crown of the bush maintains a compact shape.

Preparing for winter

In order for the deutia wood to ripen well by the beginning of the cold weather, it stops watering in August. And with the onset of September, it is advisable to protect the bases of the bushes from heavy and prolonged rainfall using waterproof material.

Warming plants for the winter is carried out in two stages. The bushes are covered for the first time immediately after the onset of night frosts. At this time, the branches of the deutsium are pressed to the ground and secured, and then sprinkled with fallen dry leaves.

The branches of tall bushes break when bent, so such plants are covered with burlap or special non-woven material.

The second (additional) shelter is carried out when the average daily temperature falls below zero. Branches of spruce branches are placed at the base of the bushes, which helps to retain snow and thereby protects from freezing.

This pine shelter remove after the snow has completely melted and warmth has established (avoiding warming). Then the bush is freed from the remaining leaves.

Reproduction

You can get new instances from the action using:

  • layerings,
  • seeds,
  • Cherenkov,
  • root shoots and
  • dividing the bush.

Propagation by seeds

For sowing seeds, prepare beds with loose, permeable soil. The beds should be located in partial shade.

Seeds are sown in the spring on the surface of the ground and not sprinkled with anything. During germination, you need to ensure that neither the seeds nor the top layer of soil dry out; you need to moisten them in time.

The first seedlings appear after 3 weeks, and when two pairs of true leaves form on them, they are picked.

You can germinate seeds at home, in boxes or boxes, but in this case the picking is done in open ground.

Plants from seeds with good care bloom in the 3rd year.

Cuttings

You can quickly and fairly easily obtain young deutsias using cuttings. Green cuttings from 10 to 20 cm long are harvested from June 15 to July 10. To do this, use the shoots of the current year that are not covered with bark.

Rooting is carried out in greenhouses at temperatures from 15 to 30 degrees. The cuttings are buried 0.5 cm, at an angle. The lower cut is powdered with a root formation stimulator.

Installing artificial fog will help increase the rooting percentage to 95-100%. As soon as the shoots on the cuttings begin to grow, they are transferred into open ground to growing beds, where they will remain for one to two years.

For the winter, they must be covered with leaf litter or spruce branches.

For propagation, you can also use lignified cuttings, which are cut in late autumn. This is convenient to do only in warm regions where the action is not covered for the winter. Each cutting should have from 3 to 5 buds. Cuttings are tied in 10-15 pieces and sent to winter storage in a cool place with a temperature of about 0 degrees, placing them in boxes and covering them with sand.

In the spring, cuttings are removed and rooted in the same way as green ones.

Dividing the bush and propagating by root shoots

Large old shrubs can be dug up, divided into 2-3 parts and planted. When planting, dry and thickened shoots are pruned.

New plants can also be obtained by separating the basal shoots from the mother bush.

Both division of the bush and propagation by root shoots are carried out, as is the planting of seedlings, in the spring.

Types, hybrids and varieties of deutzia

Deytsia graceful (D. gracilis)

Of the numerous types of deutsia, it is worth highlighting those that can be grown in Russia. First of all, this is Deutzia graceful, which is a beautifully flowering shrub that has a rounded crown shape. The height of the bush can vary from 0.5 to 0.7 meters. Elongated narrow leaves with small serrated teeth, about 6 cm long and 2 cm wide, are attached to the branches using small petioles opposite each other.

Snow-white flowers measuring 1.5 cm are located in brush-type inflorescences from 7 to 9 cm long. Lush flowering lasts almost a month and occurs in June. This type of deutia is liked for its small and compact bush shape, abundant flowering and drought resistance. And also for the fact that it grows and develops well in urban environments.

This species has variegated forms and forms with golden leaves.

Variety "Nikko (Nikko)" - low spreading shrubs up to 80 cm in height. The flowers are white, collected in spike-shaped inflorescences. Blooms in May-June. In autumn the foliage turns a beautiful burgundy color.

Deutzia small-flowered or Amur is practically the only species that is little damaged by frost. Under natural conditions, it can be found in areas of the Far East.

The crown of this low shrub, reaching a height of one meter, is formed by smoothly curved branches. The oval-shaped leaves with a pointed end and finely serrated edge are about 6 cm long. Snow-white flowers, which have no aroma, are collected in raceme-type inflorescences and are located at the ends of the shoots. Flowering of young bushes begins at three years of age and occurs every year.

Deytsia rough or star-shaped (D. scrabra)

Deytsia rough grows and develops well in the central zone of our country. Only in winters with severe frosts do the bushes freeze slightly without shelter, but with the beginning of the growing season the shoots grow quickly.

This species reaches a height of almost one meter. Leaves with a rough surface and short pubescence are 8 cm long. Flowers are painted in the most delicate pink or white shade, shaped like bells. They are collected in spectacular inflorescences 15 cm long at the ends of the shoots.

Deytsia rough begins to bloom at the very end of June, much later than other species. During flowering, such a huge number of flowers bloom on the bushes that the crown sometimes falls apart under their weight. This species must be covered for the winter. He has several interesting and beautiful varieties.

The variety “Plena (Plena)” attracts attention with densely double flowers, reminiscent of wide bells. The crown of the bush, about one meter high, is formed mostly by erect shoots.

The variety “Candissima (Candissima)” stands out among other varieties with pinkish buds, which, when blooming, turn into double snow-white flowers, which are collected in large panicle-type inflorescences. Needs good winter shelter.

The variety “Pride of Rochester” is a shrub with a dense crown, straight, upward-pointing branches up to 3 m in height and 2.5 m in width. The flowers are white double, blooming in June.

The variety "Codsall Pink" has a dense crown and curved branches. The height of the bush is up to 2.5 m, width is up to 2 m. It blooms in June, the flowers are double pink, collected in inflorescence panicles 15 cm long.

Deytsia Vilmorina (D. vilmorinae)

Deutzia Vilmorin grows up to 70 cm in the middle zone. Narrow leaves with small teeth 6 cm long are located along the entire length of the shoots.

Snow-white flowers with a diameter of 2 cm bloom in corymbose inflorescences. This species can freeze in winters with severe frosts, and therefore needs good shelter.

The magnificent deytsia was obtained as a result of the selection of Vilmorin and rough deytsia. The crown of bushes of this species is slightly more than a meter high. It is formed by both erect and slightly curved branches.

The ovate-elongated leaves, about 6 cm long, have very small teeth along the edge. The whitish flowers are collected in ball-type inflorescences with a diameter of 10 cm. Flowering lasts about three weeks and begins in mid-June.

The winter hardiness of this species is low, it requires good shelter. After frosty winters it may not bloom at all. Often flowers appear only on the lower shoots, which are covered with snow in winter.

The variety "Tourbillon Rouge" is a spectacular shrub 1.5-1.8 m high with straight branches. It blooms in June-July, the flowers are large, colored in shades from dark to pale pink, collected in paniculate inflorescences. In autumn, the elongated lanceolate leaves change color from green to yellow-pink.

Deutzia Lemoine (D. x lemoinei)

Deutia Lemoine is a hybrid obtained by crossing Deutia graceful and Amur. Bushes of this species are about one meter high and have a slightly spreading crown shape. The diameter of the snow-white flowers is one and a half centimeters. They are collected in raceme-type inflorescences from 8 to 10 cm long. Flowering begins in early June and lasts almost 3 weeks.

This species is characterized by fairly high winter hardiness. The varieties created on its basis are very popular and famous.

The variety "Mont Rose" is a shrub with a rounded shape with drooping shoots. Height up to 2 m, leaves dark green, oval with serrated edges. Blooms in June. The flowers are large, wide open with yellow stamens.

Purple deytsia (D. purpurascens)

This species is only suitable for warm climates. It is a shrub up to 2 m high. The branches are thin, light brown, the leaves are elliptical or oval-lanceolate, pointed, with a serrated edge, sparsely pubescent. The flowers are lilac-pink, collected in corymbose inflorescences of several flowers.

A hybrid obtained from crossing Deutia purple and graceful. Has good winter hardiness. It is a low compact shrub, up to 1.5 m tall, with ovoid pointed leaves 3-5 cm long. The flowers are shaped like a bell, the color is pale pink, the inflorescence is a raceme.
Variety “Campanulata (Campanulata)” is a shrub with a dense spreading crown, blooms profusely in May. The flowers are white with a pinkish tint, bell-shaped.

This hybrid was obtained by crossing Deutia Siebold and Deutia purpurea. Bushes up to 1.5 m tall, oval leaves with a serrated edge. The flowers are pink or purple-pink, the inflorescences are racemes.

One of the most popular varieties is “Perle Rose”. It is an erect or spreading shrub with lush apical racemose inflorescences with pink flowers.

Suitable for southern regions only. In the middle zone it freezes a lot and, most often, does not bloom.

Deytsia in gardening and landscape design

Most often, deutia is used in landscaping when decorating the background and middle plans of mixed flower beds, as a border, and also when planting various groups of shrubs. This crop will look especially beautiful on a well-groomed emerald lawn.

The action will look original and interesting in free, untrimmed “live” hedges, where plants are planted at intervals of 1.5-2 meters.

Various species, hybrids and varieties of this crop fit perfectly into landscape compositions from ornamental trees and bushes.
