If it is not possible to create this style in full, you can use only its individual elements.

Photo of art deco style in the interior

Art Deco literally translates as “the art of decorating” from French. This is a stylistic movement that took its name from the 1925 international exhibition. The art deco style in the interior has always been chosen by the creative intelligentsia, the elite, and the aristocratic elite. It is associated with luxurious, high-status interiors like pictures from glossy magazines, fashionable apartments, boudoirs of stars, and exclusive furnishings. The characteristics are best suited to describe it - expensive, bright, bold. Recently there has been a new wave of popularity of the destination. The designers rethought the main successful components and its return to European interiors did not go unnoticed.

This style geometric patterns and elite finishing materials allows you to ideally include numerous expensive equipment in the interior, which is very much appreciated modern people. More suitable for large apartments, country cottages, studio apartments.

5 distinctive features

Art Deco design has some similarities with other trends - there are points of contact with modern and high-tech trends, but there are basic postulates that make its uniqueness manifest:

  1. Large geometry of the pattern with zigzags, straight lines, starting on the ceiling and walls, moving onto furniture and textiles. The mirror reflection of the round ceiling motifs is strictly vertical to the floor.
  2. Use in finishing luxury natural materials pronounced texture: crocodile skin, zebra skin, leopard skin, inlay ivory.
  3. The color scheme is quite monochrome, does not tolerate halftones, the combination is built through the contrast of the following colors: white, black, gold, purple.
  4. Maximalism of design: there is no place for saving, expensive and rich is the motto of this style.
  5. Complete absence of romantic, natural ornaments.

Basic colors and shapes

The versatility of the design is manifested in the excellent fit of its important elements into modern design. Zigzag shapes perfectly organize the space; it is enough to use a zigzag layout of parquet or laying black and white tiles in a herringbone pattern. Another important element– these are the sun's rays slipping through the forms and decoration. Striping of many elements is acceptable: stripes of upholstered furniture drapery extend onto the walls or floor. Designers often combine the principle of sun rays with gradation - then expressive rays can diverge in steps.

Bohemian living room

The Art Deco style of the living room can personify the embodiment of various ideas, turning the room into a real center of aesthetics. Here, the use of extravagant materials (crocodile skin, shark), a combination of incongruous elements, for example, glass with metal casting, oriental, Egyptian motifs, is relevant. The presence of a fireplace or staircase allows you to make them a logical center, and the geometry of the living room allows you to completely abandon smooth lines and further enhance the contrast.

The ability to divide surfaces into clear blocks allows you to harmoniously fit modern technology. The optimal color scheme is brown and beige or black and white. When decorating walls, it is possible to combine more budget materials such as wallpaper, with exclusive wood panels. A favorite among floor coverings is dark-colored parquet.

The furniture is luxurious, custom-made from the darkest possible types of wood. A distinctive feature of the location is symmetry; you may need duplicate items to balance one part of the room with the opposite. Sometimes it is enough to place a spacious display cabinet and fill it with beautiful valuables. Carefully selected textiles are a must - heavy velvet curtains set the tone, and sofa cushions support it; vintage antique accessories; small sculptures of female figures; large vases; antique wall or even grandfather clocks.

Bedroom of Hollywood stars

To create an art deco bedroom, you need not be afraid to experiment with decorative elements, but not to cross the line between sophisticated, sophisticated elegance and luxury bordering on kitsch.

This bedroom design solution the softness of the forms is more characteristic, because the center of this room is the bed with its elaborate headboard, decorated with upholstery. Availability dressing table an unusual shape and an ottoman are simply necessary, as well as a sufficient number of mirrors that will prevent the room from visually shrinking due to the muted tones necessary for a comfortable sleep. Drawings and ornaments are one of the main elements of wall decoration; frescoes or decorative paintings are possible; stucco molding is suitable for the ceiling.

A natural skin or rug made of long-haired fur with thick undercoat should be placed in front of the bed. The bed itself is covered with a luxurious bedspread, the colors of the pillows match the tone of the upholstery of the ottoman and armchair. The upholstery should be contrasting with the walls and ceiling. Along with the central crystal chandelier, additional lamps, floor lamps, and LED lighting are required.

Luxurious kitchen-dining room

For kitchen and dining area a distinctive feature is sufficient multi-levelness and the replacement of some mandatory materials with more functional ones: parquet on the floor definitely needs to be replaced with tiles; When upholstering chairs, give preference to leather. Ideal option there will be a kitchen layout with an island (a special place where the sink is placed, work zone, food preparation area). Good decision There will be an impressively sized mirror above the bar counter to visually increase the space of the kitchen-dining room. Clear zoning should be done on the ceiling and walls, on the floor - a podium under dining table. Fabric panels are perfect for decorating the dining area. The best color scheme The black and white combination still remains, which will allow harmonious integration of household appliances made of plastic and chromed steel.

The main rule for creating expressive kitchen decoration is consistency. Everything should be equally solemn, from the dining table to the tiles on the apron.

Mirror World

Lighting plays almost the main role, giving the room space, cleanliness, and light. At the same time, it is impossible to do without its companion - a mirror. After all, even furniture can be not just metal, but have mirror surfaces (and now we are not talking about a banal wardrobe in the bedroom). So, in the bedroom you can make a mirrored door, which will be identified only by its gold handle. It is possible to create the effect of multiple presence of patterns, which, when reflected, make the interior of the room visually richer. Designers advise using maximum amount reflective universal surfaces, bronze candlesticks, forged figurines. The design involves a huge selection of mirror surfaces - framed with simulated sun rays, trapezoidal in shape, huge wall-length mirrors, infused with crystals.

Mirror-sun – business card of this style, this is an exquisite piece of furniture, symbolizing harmony and perfection, and the diverging rays of the sun can give great mood and warmth.

Only with the help of a huge number of mirror surfaces can you try to create a unique art deco genre in small apartment, which at first seems impossible due to the abundance of heavy textiles and multiple decorative elements.

Trends

It should be noted that new ones appear every year Decoration Materials and decisions on their use. The interior in the Art Deco style is constantly evolving - designers are working on details, selecting accessories, and transforming new ideas. The emergence of new construction tools makes it possible to design rooms and decorate them in this style more quickly and affordably, because a lot of time can pass from design to implementation. The variety of furniture and other accessories in 2018 will simplify the task of decorating.

Well-known furniture manufacturers are increasingly developing new collections with items belonging to a particular style, which also opens up wider horizons in design, because custom-made furniture is not only expensive, but very troublesome.

Classics will always remain fashionable, but art deco has been around for several years recent years is strengthening its position and we can confidently believe that it will be relevant for a long time. Now there is another increase in interest in art deco in architecture, fashion, and, accordingly, interior solutions. The comfort of all family members becomes central to the philosophy of this style solution.

Among the most current new products, we can note the use of illuminated onyx, which is no longer so difficult to implement. Used for finishing stairs, doorways, countertops, and ceilings. The stylistic orientation of Art Deco began to be used more actively when decorating a children's room. Thus, another new product, luminescent photo wallpapers, are quite self-sufficient in themselves, do not require additional support with unnecessary details, but are capable of creating a unique atmosphere of magic.

Design Benefits

This style has many positive points when used in the design of various rooms:

  • luxury, true chic, combined with the opportunity to express creative potential;
  • expensive natural finishing materials (marble, natural fur, leather, silk, velvet, precious wood, glass, metal, stained glass);
  • original valuable furniture combined with modern household appliances and gadgets;
  • sophistication of colors;
  • active use of chrome and gilding for finishing interior parts;
  • strict geometric patterning;
  • bright lighting.

If we consider the style as a whole, it looks very extravagant, expensive, bohemian, elite, and sophisticated. A significant drawback is the significant financial costs of its implementation, which limits wider distribution. What is Art Deco style?

Art Deco style or Art Deco(from the French art déco, literally "decorative art") is an influential movement in interior design, architecture and decorative arts that first appeared in France in the 1920s of the 20th century and flourished throughout the world in the 1930s and 1940s.

The term Art Deco was given life by an exhibition held in Paris in 1925 called “Exposition Internationale des Art Deco ratifs et Industriels Modernes" ("International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts"). Although the art deco style itself existed before the exhibition - from the early 20s.

The decorative power, glamor and gloss of the Gatsby era helped people forget about the horrors of war, escape from problems and plunge into the holiday, remembering elegant luxury and high style. Before this, the new style was called “jazz modern”, “zigzag modern”, “streamlined modern”. On the one hand, Art Deco “advocated” for cleansing the decorativeness of “vegetative” Art Nouveau, on the other hand, it competed with the aesthetics of expediency and overly simplified utilitarian forms. The standard of Art Deco in the 1920s was the interiors of first-class hotels, expensive restaurants and other respectable public places.

Laws and features of the art deco style from interior designers

Law 1. The main features of Art Deco style interiors can be characterized as follows.

  • Strict interior geometry. Straight and zigzag lines, stripes, patterns based on simple geometric shapes (triangles, squares, rhombuses, rings and circles) forming rhythmic and bold interior compositions.
  • Bright, energetic, contrasting colors. The color scheme of the interiors is based on a combination of black and white, black and gold, milk and wenge, burgundy, chocolate and beige.
  • Expensive materials and glossy surfaces. Art Deco is, first of all, decorative style! Luxurious finishing in the art deco style it is polished granite and marble, black lacquer and mother-of-pearl, glass, chrome-plated and gold-plated metal, precious wood, ivory and genuine leather. The interior must certainly have rare and exotic inserts, such as crocodile skin or lizard skins.

Law 2. Creating a feeling of material well-being and reviving the former luxury of an interior in the art deco style is based on the achievements of technological progress. At the time of the appearance of the style, its formation was influenced by the rapidly developing in those years Industrial Design. The result of scientific and technological progress was the active use of metal, durable glass and jewelry inserts, as well as the rejection of plant forms typical of Art Nouveau.

Law 3. Art Deco style contains ethnic motifs. African figurines, masks and drums, Chinese vases, lacquer boxes and silk, Japanese screens and partitions are actively used in the decor, the floor is decorated with oriental carpets self made and skins of exotic animals.

Law 4. Archaeological discoveries of the early 20th century were reflected in the Art Deco style. As a result, rethought and geometrically simplified elements of the decorative art of Assyria, Babylon, Ancient Egypt and Rome, Aztec and Inca ornaments.

The interior design of the Regina Hotel Baglioni in Rome, where F. Fellini filmed the legendary film “La Dolce Vita,” is designed in the art deco style. The interior combined external luxury with the rationality of the traditions of Rome, Egypt, Greece, China, and Japan. Here luxury is not only expensive materials, but also visual richness, expressed in bright and rich colors.

Art Deco style in the interior of a house and apartment

1. Avoid too direct and rational forms. Art Deco, as well as the Art Nouveau style in general, is characterized by complex transitions from floor to floor, the presence of several levels in the same room and suddenly discovered secret rooms, intricately shaped window sashes. Spiral staircases- the most romantic, spectacular element in the interior, they significantly save space. The optimal width of the steps is 20 cm in the narrow part, 35 - 40 cm in the wide part, the minimum length is 80 cm. The material for their manufacture can be pine, oak or beech.

2. More rigor in everything: instead of smoothness - sharpness, instead of floral patterns - geometric and abstract. Shapes that are essential for decorating a house or apartment in this interior style: cube, sphere, circle and square. You can use furniture and decor items in the form of these shapes!

3. A graphic monochrome combination of black and white is a key feature of the art deco style. The interior designer must maintain a balance of white and black colors, or think of other color variations– white and chocolate, brown and beige, silver-gray and black. Classic example floor covering - marble black and white chessboard.
