Como is one of the most picturesque cities in Italy. Lake Como, Italy: fabulous panoramas, luxurious villas and exotic gardens

Geographical location of Como

The Alps protect the shores of Como, which appeared in ancient times when glaciers melted, from cold winds from the north, so the climate here is milder than in other parts of Lombardy. The bottom of the lake lies 200 meters below sea level, the maximum depth of the reservoir reaches 400 m. In the north, near the town of Colico, the Alpine Adda River flows into Lago di Como, and there are mountain streams along the perimeter. Approximately in the middle, in the Bellagio area, the lake is divided into two branches. The length of Como is more than 45 km, the width ranges from 4.2 to 0.65 km. Blowing all year round the soft southern afternoon wind “breva” and the night “tivano” usually do not disturb the calm of the water surface, but in July and August the weather brings surprises: treacherous storms are possible in Como, affecting the schedule of boats and ferries.

Natural attractions

The main reason for the popularity of Lake Como is its magnificent views: rocky, forested shores, red-tiled roofs of village houses, ancient villas and castles, gardens blooming from March to October. On the northern shore, at the mouth of the Adda and Mera rivers, is the Pian di Spagna Nature Reserve, a plateau wetland between lakes Como and Mezzola.

At the southern borders of the reserve there are comfortable campsites located right on the shore or a few minutes’ walk from the lake. At the La Torre campsite in the town of Sorico, tourists will be offered vans or micro-houses with verandas, hot and cold water, Wi-Fi, laundry. Guests can enjoy windsurfing, kitesurfing, horse riding, paragliding and hang gliding. Camp La Riva is located on the Mere River and has its own outdoor pool. On the opposite bank, La Grande operates, enticing guests with the opportunity to bring their pets with them. The camping season on Lake Como opens in March and lasts until November. The room costs about 10 euros per night, but all services, such as electricity, are paid additionally. Guests are offered boats and boats, fishing and swimming accessories for rent.

Beaches of Como

There are few sandy beaches on the lake; one of the few is located near the town of Llerna on the eastern shore. In other areas of Como, narrow strips of the coast are covered with pebbles, and near Lecco, at the eastern “leg”, the rocks come very close to the water. The most visited beaches with developed infrastructure are in the Bellagio area. Como water is cool, the optimal time for swimming is July and August. It is recommended to swim along the shore to avoid cold currents.

Man-made attractions in the vicinity of Como

If travelers do not have enough time to see all the attractions of coastal cities and towns, they are recommended to pay attention to the town of Como, which once competed with Milan for dominance in the region. Today, the Baradello fortress, towering above a 430-meter hill, or rather, the square watchtower that remains from the 6th century and the chapel of St. Nicholas, remind us of its former glory. The Gothic Cathedral of Como was built on the site of an earlier Romanesque one in the 14th century, and the interior was renovated in the 16th-17th centuries. The building, reaching a height of 75 meters, is made in the shape of a Latin cross. You can take photographs inside the temple, but not during church holidays.

Ancient religious objects have been preserved in other parts of Lake Como. In Gravedona, on the northwestern coast, tourists can see the Romanesque church of Santa Maria del Tiglio, built in the 12th century from white marble and black stone. Inside, what remains from the previous buildings is a floor with mosaics from the 5th century with black, white and red patterns, and fragments of medieval frescoes.

Mount Ossuccio - UNESCO World Heritage Site

It was not the natural monument itself that received the status of a protected object, but the baroque chapels on it. The 419 m high rock is located 25 km north of the town of Como, on the western shore of the lake, in the commune of Ossuccio, opposite the island of Comacina. Once upon a time, the goddess Ceres was worshiped in the mountain sanctuary; in the 17th-18th centuries, 14 chapels with 230 terracotta statues of saints were erected in its place according to a single plan, leading to the last building - the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Comacina Island

Comacina, the only island on Lake Como, is small - only 600 m long and 200 wide. In the 12th century, during the Ten Years' War between Como and Milan over trade routes, the island was set on fire, and residents were forced to swim out of the burning ruins. In memory of this event, every year on the Sunday closest to June 24, hundreds of toy boats with lit candles are launched into the water. After the defeat, the island was deserted for a long time, the medieval buildings fell into disrepair. Residents returned to Comacina only in the Baroque era, when the Church of San Giovanni appeared. Hotels for tourists began to be built in the twentieth century.

Comacina Island

Villas and castles of Como

In the Perleda area on the eastern shore of Lake Como, the 12th-century Castle di Vezio is well preserved. True, tourists are more likely interested not in the harsh medieval structure, but in the show of birds of prey, which takes place in the garden daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from March to October. You can admire the rapidly diving buzzards, owls, and hawks for only 4 euros. The respectable Castello di Lierna, located 6 km to the south, differs from the austere stone building surrounded by a fortress wall. The Milanese fought for the right to occupy it back in the 12th century, but then local residents simply used the solid foundation to build residential buildings over it, giving it a cozy bourgeois look.

The coast of Lake Como is home to many inaccessible private villas, but some of the most architecturally interesting ones are open to visitors for as little as 6-9 euros. The Villa Carlotta, built in the 17th century in Tremezzo, on the western shore of the lake opposite Bellagio, deserves attention. The complex looks most impressive in spring, when one and a half hundred species of azaleas bloom in the garden. The building itself houses a unique collection of Canova statues. No less famous is the garden at the neoclassical Villa Melzi, open to tourists from late March to November.

On the promontory of Ossuccio, right on the coast, at the foot of a forested mountain, stands Villa Balbianello. Built at the beginning of the 18th century on the ruins of a Franciscan monastery, it became a living backdrop for many film projects - Italian classics, one of the James Bond series, the episode " Star Wars" The last owner of the villa, Guido Monzino, the famous traveler who conquered the North Pole, opened a museum in the house, which presents household items of the Inuit, Argentine Indians, Masai, Tibetans, valuable collections of Venetian glass and English furniture.

Shops and restaurants

The cities on Lake Como cannot beat Milan in the range of goods and prices, but there is something to profit from here too. On the shores of the lake, farmers breed silkworms, which provide raw materials for elegant scarves and bright ties. Numerous restaurants offer mainly Italian cuisine, including fresh fish.

Tourist information

Excursion boats ply on Lake Como. The cost of a day trip from Como to Nesso with stops for sightseeing is 15 euros. For long-term stays, it is beneficial to purchase subscriptions to river transport. How to get there

Travelers usually come to Lake Como from Milan Central Station by electric trains, which run every hour. From Switzerland, a highway passes through Colico in the north.

Como is a city and the administrative center of the province of the same name in the Lombardy region.

The city of Como is located at its southwestern tip of the lake of the same name.

Como is now a popular tourist destination in northern Italy. What makes the city of Como such a desirable and visited place? There are several answers to this question:

Firstly, Como is a very picturesque, cozy and sophisticated city. There are narrow streets lined with bright buildings of interesting architecture, reflecting the centuries-old history of the city; a long embankment, walking along which you can see picturesque views every now and then; And beautiful nature, embodied in the water surface of the lake, framed by the foothills of the Alps, subtly combined with the rare, but still present in Como, southern vegetation;

Secondly, it is convenient to get there. Direct trains from Milan will take you to the very center of Como in less than an hour;

Thirdly, the city is so cozy that, being in Como, you feel how, dissolving in history, you are captured by the inner harmony and peace provided by pristine nature.

Yes, Como is not Rome or Venice, but after the noisy and bustling Milan in Como you can relax your body and soul.

Sights of Como. What to see in Como

The main attractions of Como are concentrated in the historical center, near the lake and within walking distance of each other, which also makes Como a very pleasant place for leisurely walks.

Como seafront

The Como promenade is one of the main attractions and promenades in the city. The embankment skirts the southwestern tip of Lake Como. On one side of the embankment there is the historical center, and on the other there is a lake, along the banks of which mountains rise.

By the way, Lake Como is the third largest lake in Italy and one of the deepest in Europe, its depth reaches 410 meters.

There is a walking promenade along the lake. On the right side are: a small park area, the landmark Fontana Viale Geno/Amici di Como and Villa Geno.

Also on the right side of the embankment is the Como-Brunate funicular, connecting the city of Como with the village of Brunate. The funicular is one of the main attractions of the area.

Brunate itself is an interesting town (commune), rather a small ancient village full of mysteries and legends, but tourists are especially attracted by the incredible beauty of the panoramic views opening from many points of Brunate to the city of Como, Lake Como of the same name and the Italian Alps.

Walking area “going into the waters of the lake”

In the central part of the embankment there is a ferry pier and ticket offices. On a pleasure boat you can take a walk around the lake or go to other settlements of Lake Como.

A walking pier, walking along which you can see the modern sculpture “Life Electric” created in 2014-2015 and dedicated to a native of the city - the famous physicist Alessandro Volta (1745-1827).

Park - gardens of the Voltine Temple (Giardini del Tempio Voltiano), which contains: a children's playground, a mini-golf course and a museum dedicated to Alessandro Volta "Temple of Volta" (Tempio Voltiano).

Monument to the Fallen or War Memorial (War Memorial/Monumento ai Caduti)

Aero Club Como. Here you can book a seaplane flight with professional pilots and admire the city and lake from above.

Near the embankment is the parish of St. George or San Giorgio (Saint George Parish/Parrocchia San Giorgio)

The left side of the Como embankment is a quieter and less visited place. Here are places to relax and balconies, which offer the most picturesque views of the lake and the surrounding area than from other points on the embankment.

Villa Saporiti, Villa Gallietta. Lake Como is famous for its villas, which once served as the residences of aristocrats and the rich. Currently, these villas mainly house museums, hotels, restaurants and government offices.

The most sophisticated of Como's villas is Villa Olmo. Villa Olmo built since 1797 in neo classic style has beautiful architecture and a large park area. Currently it is a venue for exhibitions. It may be closed to visitors during various works; it is better to check opening hours on the official website.

Historical center of Como. Old town of Como

The historical center of Como or, as it is also called “ Old city" - the heart of Como, the place where the most interesting and visited attractions of the city are located. The most visited part of the historical center is located closer to right side embankment.

In the Historical Center: an interlacing of streets along which ancient buildings are located close to each other, small areas and courtyards, churches, as well as an abundance of shops, trading and souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants.

Duomo Cathedral

The Duomo di Como/Cathedral of Como is the main and largest cathedral in Como. The cathedral is located on the square of the same name. This majestic Cathedral is without a doubt the hallmark of Como. Made in the Gothic style and dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Construction of the basilica began in 1396 on the site of the previous Romanesque church of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Piazza Duomo in Como

Palace Broletto

Directly adjacent to the cathedral is the Broletto Palace or Palazzo Broletto - the ancient residence of the city rulers of Como. The palazzo is built in the Gothic style with Renaissance elements on the façade and dates back to the 15th century. Currently, Broletto is used as a congress hall, as well as a place for art exhibitions and celebrations.

The representative ensemble of both buildings (palace and cathedral) is obvious, but, ultimately, such a duo became almost unique evidence of the close connection between spiritual and temporal authorities in the city of the European Middle Ages.

On the left side of the palace there is a small Catholic Church of San Giacomo(Chiesa di San Giacomo)

Teatro Sociale

Behind the Cathedral is the famous Teatro Sociale(Teatro Sociale di Como). The theater was designed by the architect Giuseppe Cusi following a decision of the local nobility due to the need to replace an already outdated building. Construction of new and more modern building began in early 1812, and was supposed to be completed that same year, but due to bad weather and minor troubles, construction was delayed. The façade of the theater is made in neoclassical style.

Basilica of San Fedele

Another famous shrine of Como is the Church of San Fidele or Basilica di San Fedele (Chiesa di San Fedele). This church is located in the historical center of Como on the square of the same name (Piazza S. Fedele) and is dedicated to the martyr Saint Fidelis.

The construction of the basilica dates back to 1120. The Neo-Romanesque façade of San Fedele, rebuilt from scratch in 1914, features an ornate rose window.

Monument to Alessandro Volta

In one of the central squares of the historical center of Como (Piazza Alessandro Volta / Piazza Alessandro Volta) there is monument to Alessandro Volta(Monument of Alessandro Volta)

Church of Saint Cecilia

Church of Saint Cecilia or Church of Adoration (Saint Cecilia/Chiesa dell Adorazione). Externally, the church seems inconspicuous, since it is located within the walls of the Alessandro Volta High School. The interior of the church is richly decorated with frescoes. Perhaps this is one of the most striking churches in the historical part of Como.

Defensive walls and towers

Near the Church of Cecilia you can see another historical landmark - Porta Tore(Porta Torre) - one of the defensive towers in Como, erected in 1192 to protect the most important and central entrance to the city. The height of the tower reaches 40 meters.

Porta Torre is one of the most interesting examples of military architecture of the Romanesque tradition in Italy. The tower has a forbidding appearance from the outside, while on the side of the former city one can see four rows of arches, two in each row, corresponding to the four internal floors of the tower.

Behind the Porta Torre Tower you can see Garibaldi monument(Monumento a Garibaldi)

And along Viale Carlo Cattaneo defensive walls and two more towers located in the western and eastern parts of the street from the central tower of Porta Torre: Gattoni Tower or Porta Nuova(torre di Porta Nuova/Gattoni Tower) in the west and Tower of San Vitale or St. Vitus(Saint Vitale Tower) in the east.

It is with these towers and walls that the city of Como can be geographically divided into historical and newer parts.

Along the protective wall there is an outdoor tent market, where they mainly sell clothes, bags, toys and other goods.

ChurchSantuariodelSs.Crocifisso (sanctuary of the crucifixions)

Not far from the western tower, if you go to the lake along Varese Street, there is an interesting Catholic Church Santuario del Ss. Crocifisso in Como, attractive primarily for its bright decoration, which is so unusual for Como churches.

There are many more different churches in the historical center of Como and beyond, for example:

Church of St. Maria di Loreto or Santa Maria di Loreto(Chiesa di Santa Maria di Loreto), located near the train station of San Giovanni

Church of Sant'Eusebio(Chiesa S. Eusebio)

Jesus Church(Chiesa del Gesu) - small old temple in Romanesque style, located in the historical center of the city. In appearance, the church is very simple; inside, the typical decoration of Catholic churches has been preserved. This church is non-tourist, but it is in such churches that you can feel the special atmosphere believing life of society. Definitely worth a visit.

Small Catholic church Parrocchia Sant'Agostino E Antonino built by the Cistercians in the early 14th century, restored in the 20th century. In the interior and the adjacent monastery you can see frescoes from the 15th to 17th centuries, but most of the decorations are still made in the Baroque style. This church is located near the bus station and the Nord Lago railway station.

Parish Church of Saint Orsola(Parrocchia S. Orsola) located near the eastern defensive tower.

And Basilica of Saint Abbondio(Basilica di Sant'Abbondio) and Church of St. Bartolomeo(Chiesa Cattolica Parrocchiale S. Bartolomeo), located outside the old center.

Silk Museum

The Silk Museum in Como (Educational Silk Museum - Como) tells about the process of making natural silk - from raising caterpillars to weaving looms. The museum is located at Via Castelnuovo, 9.

In 1985, the associations Classe "27 and Ex Allievi del Setificio began collecting materials belonging to silk factories based in Como. In the 1960s, due to a fundamental reorganization, the textile industry began to change, and in the 1980s the silk factories finally abandoned their premises, which made it possible to collect machines and other valuable items in order to create a museum and pass on the history of the silk industry to future generations.

In 1988, the Arts Committee was established. And in 1990, the Silk Educational Museum was opened, clearly demonstrating the history of silk production.

Silk receives special attention in Como and the surrounding area, as silk and silk products have been produced in this area for over 500 years. Silk products on the coast of Lake Como are considered some of the best in Italy and have already become the hallmark of Lake Como. Silk products (shawls, scarves, ties, capes, etc.) can be bought in many stores, both in the city of Como and in other settlements of the lake.

Food Central Market Como

The indoor food market (Mercato Coperto) is located at Via Sirtori Giuseppe, 1, near the defensive towers and walls of Como.

In the market you can find an abundance of food: meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, etc. Market opening days: Tuesday, Thursday until 13:00; Friday - Saturday until 19:00; Monday, Wednesday, Sunday - closed.

Supermarkets in the historical center of Como

There are plenty of small grocery stores on the streets of the historic center of Como, but the selection of food and household essentials is very limited.

For an abundance of groceries and other small goods, it is better to go to large supermarkets:

Carrefour Express - Supermercato, located a block from the Duomo Cathedral, in the basement of a department store, at Via Pietro Boldoni, 3. Although this supermarket has more express stores, the selection of fruits, vegetables and ready-made food is still poor.

Carrefour Market - Supermarket - perhaps the best in the historical center for the selection of food products. Here a good choice fruits, vegetables and cheeses. There is a supermarket near the embankment, or rather the park of the Voltina Temple, at the intersection of Via Recchi/Via Rosselli.

Esselunga di Via Ambrosoli is a large supermarket with underground parking, located away from the historical center, above the central food market, at Via Carloni, 24.

When is the best time to go to Como?

It’s hard to say, Como is good at any time of the year, the attractions and most restaurants are open all year round. We were in Como in January, the weather was mostly good, +4 - +10 degrees, sunny, and what surprised us was that the city did not suffer from a lack of greenery. Although some establishments were still closed, as was written on information signs, they close from late October to mid-March.

How far to go to Como, what to see in the vicinity of Como

We think the minimum is three days, although many come for just a day from Milan. It seems that in one day you can see little in Como, or you will have to run, which you don’t want to do on vacation.

Offhand, then:

One day to the historical center and embankment (preferably two);

One for the funicular and a walk along Brunate, if you want to stay in Brunate, then the hotel is available;

You can also take a pleasure boat ride around the lake from Como. Although boats make trips at any time of the year, it is still more interesting and enjoyable to ride in the warmer months.

You can walk from Como on foot or take a boat to nearby towns. For example, Tavernola and Cernobbio.

Street photos of Como, Italy

The territory of the city was inhabited by Gauls at the end of the Bronze Age. In 196 BC. The Romans established a base here for their fleet. At the same time, Pompey Strabo settled here and began construction of the city. Very soon the territory became very rich and was an important military hub.

When Ancient Rome fell, first the Goths settled in the city, and then the Lombards, who were replaced by the Franks in 774. From 1535 to 1713, the Spaniards ruled here and brought the area into complete decline. After the death of Charles II, the city came into the hands of the Austrians, who completely restored it in just a few decades. The city became part of Italy in 1859 as a result of the War of Independence. Since then, Como has been part of the new Kingdom of Italy.

This palace, whose second name sounds like a municipal one, was erected in 1225 by order of the head of the city. The building is made in Gothic and Romanesque style.

Its facade is decorated with multi-colored marble extracted from the lake, which at that time surrounded the palace tower. The building was periodically rebuilt, as a result of which two arches were erected on its southern side in 1477, and the portico was removed in 1514. It was originally intended for the town hall, but in 1764 it became a theater stage and then a store. Since the beginning of the last century, the palace has been constantly restored and now serves as a venue for exhibitions and special events.

Construction of the temple lasted almost four centuries - from 1396 to 1740. This grand cathedral, paved with marble, combines elements of Gothic and Romanesque styles. The height of its majestic dome is 75 m. On both sides, the cathedral portal is decorated with figures of prominent citizens - Pliny the Younger and Pliny the Elder. Location: Via Maestri Comacini - 6.

This neoclassical building was opened in 1797 by Napoleon Bonaparte. The name of the residence comes from the elm tree that at that time decorated the park adjacent to the villa. Subsequently, the building was completed, but its style remained unchanged. The main building is lined with columns and pilasters, and is crowned by a terrace on which statues are located. Externally, the villa looks very modest, while its interior decoration replete with gilding, frescoes and stucco. There is a small temple in the park, and a magnificent fountain was erected in the courtyard of the residence.

The basilica is located in the historical center of the city and was built on the site where an ancient Christian church stood in the 7th century. Its construction dates back to 1120. The building was constructed in several architectural styles, among which Romanesque predominates.

The building is decorated with various sculptures of griffins and monsters. In 1905, the bell tower was restored, and in 1914, the façade of the building was restored. The basilica contains an ancient organ, created in 1941, as well as a large number of frescoes and a beautiful marble altar.

Location: Via Vittorio Emanuele II - 94.

This church stands on the shore of the lake of the same name. The purpose of the basilica was to store the relics that belonged to Saints Peter and Paul. In the period from 1050 to 1095, the building was reconstructed in the Romanesque style and dedicated to Saint Avundius, in whose honor it was renamed. During the restoration of 1863, the remains of an early Christian church were found, on the site of which the basilica was built. Currently, these parts are distinguished from the rest of the building by their finishing in black and gray marble.

Location: Via Regina Teodolinda - 35.

This structure, inimitable in its fragility and amazing balance, was created in 1936 in the square of the same name in the city of Como. The two architects, who were inspired by the work of Alessandro Volta, created a fountain consisting of various combinations of rings and spheres.

Location: Piazza Camerlata.

This outstanding physicist, who invented the world's first lightning rod, was a native of Como. The museum dedicated to him was opened in 1927 and is still the most popular attraction in the city among tourists.

The structure was built in the form of a neoclassical style temple, the frame of which is made of reinforced concrete. In appearance, the gallery is a smaller copy of the Roman Pantheon. The museum's exposition is represented by the physicist's scientific works, his personal belongings and instruments, as well as letters and scientific publications.

Location: Viale Guglielmo Marconi.

This is the only museum in the world that covers for its visitors the full cycle of creation of this fabric. Como has a very well developed industry for the production of silk and clothing made from it. The gallery displays photographs, a library, clothing collections, as well as equipment that influenced the development of this industry in the region, which contributed to its prosperity and economic development.

Location: Via Castelnuovo - 9.

This building, located in Piazza del Popolo, is an example of rationalist architecture. It was built in the 30s of the last century using the most innovative technologies.

As a result, the building's designer was accused of imitating a foreign style in architecture. In the post-war period, the building was used as the residence of the Democratic parties, then the headquarters of the financial police was located here. Currently, the House of Fascism houses an exhibition of the museum of the 6th Legion of the city's financial police.

The structure is located on the highest hill of the city of Como, rising 430 m above sea level. The castle is a massive tower with a square base. Initially, its height reached 28 m and the building was decorated with battlements, which, unfortunately, have not survived to this day.

The tower was surrounded by a wall built by the Byzantines in the 6th - 7th centuries BC. Now the wall is almost completely destroyed, only small parts of it remain here and there. The castle ruins can only be reached on foot. From the top of the hill on which this castle is located, a beautiful panorama of the city of Como, the Alps and the lake opens up, the view will take your breath away.

The beautiful Italian resort town of Como is located on the lake of the same name. To visit here, and even more so to relax in these places is considered very prestigious. No wonder wealthy Europeans are trying to buy real estate in the city of Como. Why is he so attractive?

Cozy romance

This place is not just beautiful and cozy, here Italian romance meets aristocratic sophistication, heavenly transparency of the lake and a magnificent view of the Alpine snowy peaks.

This picturesque place is an easy break from large industrial cities. And why? Perhaps because the city has been preserved in the same form in which Italian poets and novelists described it in the 19th century. Once in the city of Como, it is as if you are transported centuries ago: the calm, measured rhythm of life is very different from the life of any modern metropolis, and the ancient aristocratic villas still look out with their facades onto the mesmerizing blue lake.

Thoughtful Beauty

The history of the city goes back more than one century, during which time Como has acquired a huge number of attractions. Moreover, most of them are completely different from similar places in Rome, Milan and even Venice. The beauty in the city of Como (Italy) is not so directed, but mysterious and attractive.

Where to begin?

According to tourists, from the lighthouse of Alessandro Volta on Brunate. This is the perfect way to start exploring the city - to see it from a bird's eye view. The funicular from Piazza de Gasperi brings everyone here. It works from six in the morning until half past twelve at night (in the summer until midnight). The journey takes only seven minutes, but there is still a bit of uphill to get to the lighthouse.

The illegitimate son of a priest and a local aristocrat was born in Como and lived on the shores of the lake all his life. After 23 years, the first lightning rod installed by Volta appeared in the city. He used the ringing of bells to let people know that a thunderstorm was approaching. So the lighthouse is also his invention.

The temple was opened on the centenary of the great scientist, in 1927. This is the most visited place in the city of Como (Italy). The photo clearly shows that the building is a smaller copy of the Roman Pantheon. That is, the museum of the famous physicist was created in the form of a neoclassical temple. Only it is assembled on a reinforced concrete frame. The exhibition of the Volta Museum in the city of Como presents all the scientist’s instruments and instruments, preserved documents and letters, the results of experiments and scientific publications.

Here you can also see the prototype of all currently used power supply devices - the famous Volta battery.

Life Electric

Another attraction of the city of Como in Italy (see photo below), dedicated to the unsurpassed Alessandro Volta. This is the well-known Life Electric - a contemporary sculpture. Extraordinary waves generated by electric current are installed on the shore of the lake. Work on the sculpture ended just two years ago. It is open for tourists around the clock.

City center

It still remains almost untouched, although the city was founded in early 59 BC. e. The main place of Como is considered to be Piazza Cavour. The city port used to be located here, which was replaced by a modern pier at the end of the last century. Life on it is in full swing both day and night. Leaving the pier motor boats and shuttle boats transporting tourists and locals to other coastal cities.

Silk Museum

This city is famous for textile production, and mostly for silk fabrics. As a landmark in the city of Como, the museum tells the story of the amazingly modern silk production cycle and the regular improvements in technology throughout the factory's history. And also that it was production that made these places so economically developed. In fact, silk production in Como began in the 14th century. Today there are about 800 companies involved in the dyeing, design, sale and production of silk products. Almost 23,000 people work at these enterprises. Famous contemporary designers order fabrics for the production of their collections from Como factories. Most items from Chanel, Prada, Armani, Kenzo, Versace or other famous brands were most likely made using Comas silk or in the city of Como.

Teatro Sociale

An amazing place for great cultural entertainment. The interior decoration of the theater is absolutely not inferior to the famous La Scala. Legends say that the great Nicolo Paganini once played on this stage.

Tickets are available even on the day of the concert.

Central temple of Duomo di Como

It is located on the city square of the same name. To enter, you are asked to make a voluntary-compulsory donation of one euro. Usually no one regrets this. The interior of the cathedral is stunning in its beauty. In addition, there is a high probability of getting to a service (Italy is a Catholic country) or to an amazing concert of organ music.

Work on its construction began in 1396 and ended 400 years later. The result was a grandiose work of art, combining several various styles, which appeared one by one. First Gothic, characterized by austerity, then Renaissance, with its elegance, and lastly, magnificent Baroque.

The cathedral is open from half past nine to half past five in the morning (except Sundays).

What else to see in Como? Without a doubt, basilicas. About twenty minutes walk from the center is the modest-looking Basilica of St. Abbondio. Not many people dare to come in, but in vain. Inside there is a stunningly beautiful colonnade, solemnly leading to the altar, painted in the classical style. In such places one enjoys peace and tranquility and is imbued with the historical importance of the moment.

Naturally, it’s impossible to visit the city of Como without visiting at least one of the many ancient villas of the aristocrats. According to reviews from tourists, it is better to start with Olmo. Moreover, it is considered the calling card of the greatest architect of Italy - Simone Cantoni. This is a strikingly beautiful architectural complex in a neoclassical style with a park of incredible size.

The palazzo took more than 20 years to build. The Austrian emperors Ferdinand I and Giuseppe Garibaldi, the queens of Sardinia, Sicily and other important persons managed to stay there.

IN late XIX century, the new owner of the villa started a grandiose renovation. As a result, it acquired its modern appearance: two balconies were opened, a porch and two stables were demolished, and the park was landscaped.

However, since the middle of the last century, the palazzo came under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Como. Various city events are held here.

The entrance is free.

Museums

There are quite a lot of them here, especially dedicated to the discoveries of the pre-Garibaldi era and archaeological excavations. Therefore, a true history buff will have something to do.

  • Historical Museum (Museo Storico). The exhibits of this complex are dedicated to the history of the country in the 19th century. This period is known for its movement for the unification of Italy. And as they say in school, Giuseppe Garibaldi played an important role in these transformations - famous commander. In the museum, among his many belongings, there is an elegant warlord's helmet of pain.
  • Pinacoteca Civica. This is a place for art lovers. There is a huge collection of artistic attractions here. Of course, it won’t compare with the one in Milan, but it will definitely please you with its variety. The walls of the Pinakothek display the most ancient real cave paintings, works of the Renaissance period and Art Nouveau paintings.
  • Roman baths (Terme Romane). These are really Roman baths, or rather, what remains of them. This archaeological site is considered very valuable. For from it you can understand how the city of Como looked before the birth of Alessandro Volta and his experiments.
  • Archaeological Museum (Museo Archeologico Paolo Giovio). Within its walls, experts have collected a huge collection of antiquities. It tells about the city from the very moment of its inception.

Ancient buildings

The oldest church is the Church of San Carpoforo. It was erected on the site of the Temple of Mercury (built by the ancient Romans). Near Piazza Cavour, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore attracts attention. It appeared here in the first half of the 14th century and is a stunning example of eclecticism, plus it surprisingly mixed Renaissance and Gothic.

Villa Carlotta is also historically interesting. On its territory there is a famous English park, in which statues made by the famous architects Canova and Thorvaldsen are pleasing to the eye. And also the People's House, which for the city of Como (Italy) has a very unusual architectural style.

Tourists are also interested in the Municipal Palace, as it is also called the Broletto Palace. It was erected in 1215. According to the project, it was attached to ancient temple(in its place is now the Cathedral). This close coexistence was explained by the close connection between the church and the city civil authorities.

The building is made in two styles: Romanesque and Gothic. At the same time, on the facade you can see elements dating back to the Renaissance. The palace went through several reconstructions, which led to the division of the building into an eastern wing and a western one.

By the end of 1764, the palace became a famous theater in the city, and years later a store was opened in it.

In the middle of the last century, essentially the first restoration work took place in the palace. Today, it hosts ceremonial events of various types: art exhibitions, conferences, concerts, etc.

It is not known for certain which city appeared on it first. But if you take into account the curious shape of the reservoir and the unique climatic conditions, it is clear why famous personalities have been trying to settle here since ancient times.

The lake is surrounded by mountains, and perhaps that is why it had to stretch in three directions. In the bird's eye view photo, the pond looks very much like a slingshot.

The deepest place of the lake is 410 meters. It is fed by three rivers.

The species diversity of vegetation in these places is very large. The air temperature in the vicinity of the lake rarely drops below zero. But the water is cool in summer too. This is due to the many cold bottom springs.

There is a small island on Como - Comacina. Once it was used to protect the coastal area, today this place is chosen by art connoisseurs. Tourists try to get to the island and, if possible, purchase paintings with landscapes, both from modern reality and from medieval ruins (the remains of an ancient fortress and the basilica named after St. Eufemia).

In addition to artists, these sights of the city of Como (Italy) and film scriptwriters fascinate. Such famous films as “Ocean’s Twelve”, one of the parts of “Star Wars” and “Casino Royale” were filmed in these places.

Well, if you suddenly find yourself on the island, be sure to try local dishes in the only tavern. Its menu has remained unchanged for several decades.

By the way, the lake has another name that came from ancient Roman literature - Lario.

If everything is about everything - one day

Experienced tourists do not recommend spending all their time in museums and churches. In the city of Como (see photos in the article), it is very important to have time to enjoy its main value - amazing landscapes. You can plan your day something like this:

  • At nine in the morning, on the shore of the awakening lake, drink a cup of freshly brewed cappuccino with a crispy croissant.
  • Having received a charge of unprecedented energy (and judging by the reviews, Italian coffee invigorates quite seriously), it’s time to “climb” the mountain with the lighthouse. It takes about forty minutes to get up, and a little more to look around.
  • Closer to one o'clock in the afternoon is the ideal time for a boat trip on the lake. It is good to choose the nearest city and purchase a ferry ticket. For example, in Cernobbio.
  • Here, on one of the most beautiful streets, you should definitely go to a cafe and taste delicious dishes of both well-known Italian cuisine and amazing regional cuisine.

  • If you don’t want to leave at all, you can go to Villa Erba. This is an improvised exhibition complex.
  • In the late afternoon, upon returning to the city, there is enough time to enjoy a visit to the Duomo, wander the streets and end the day with a delicious dinner with a glass of real Italian wine.

Aeroclub

It is certainly not a tourist attraction. But flying over such a beautiful lake is only possible here. The club has an official website. You can find a phone number or address on it Email, for which ticket booking is available. Amazing impressions are guaranteed!

Como was a prosperous city even under the Romans.

It is known that Gauls lived in this territory back in the Bronze Age. In 196 BC. The Romans built a base here for their flotilla. And at the same time, under the leadership of Pompey Strabo, city construction began. After the abolition of Roman rule, this land was captured by the Goths, then they were replaced by pawnshops, and in 774 the Franks settled. In the 16th-18th centuries, the Spanish authorities brought the city to complete decline, and the Austrians were subsequently able to restore it within a few decades. The city has been part of the Kingdom of Italy since 1859.

Residents are proud of the famous natives of the city - Pliny the Elder, Pliny the Younger, Pope Innocent Eleventh, writer Alessandro Manzoni (born in Lecco). The memory of Alessandro Volta is especially reverent here. The Temple of Science was erected in his honor, a lighthouse was named, and a monument was erected.

Their most significant creation is the two-domed elongated Basilica of Sant’Abbondio with carvings on the façade and 14th-century paintings in the altar.

The dome, noticeable from afar, belongs to the local Duomo. The cathedral was built over a long period of time, from the 14th to the 18th centuries, so its body comes into some conflict with the Baroque head. The Gothic facade is decorated with beautiful sculptures, and inside there are canvases by Bernardino Luini (a student of Leonardo).

Porta Torre

The medieval walls of the city have survived very well to this day. Together with them, three towers, which stood guard over peace and tranquility in those days, were also preserved. The largest of them, the forty-meter-high Porta Torre, was built at the end of the 12th century. Notable are the massive gates of the tower, above which there are double arches in four rows. The gate is now called Porta Vittoria to commemorate Garibaldi's victories, and in front of it is a monument to the national hero of Italy.

Camerlata Fountain

Abstract artist Radice and architect Cattaneo, inspired by the scientific discoveries of Alessandro Volta, created a unique fountain. Its asymmetrical structure is made up of spheres located on rings and alternating with them. The bold idea was brought to life in 1936 as “an example of a perfect and fragile balance” in the world. It is completely unclear how this structure has been maintained on Piazza Camerlata for so many years.

Palazzo Terragni (Casa del Fascio)

The famous Italian architect Giuseppe Terragni, who advocated the ideas of rationalism in architecture, erected the People's House in Como, called the House of Fascism. Construction of the masterpiece lasted from 1932 to 1936. For that time, the rationalist style was essentially an architectural revolution, so the innovative creation was subjected to sharp criticism.
