Roof aerators for what area? Roofing aerator TechnoNIKOL

Roof aerators- these are special devices whose function is to free the under-roof space from excess moisture. Aerators are installed on roofs with different roofing materials and slope angles. Their availability on flat roofs with soft roofing material prevents the destruction of the roofing carpet under the influence of precipitation and moisture formed in the under-roof space.

The need to dry the roof covering

The length of the roof’s service life depends on a variety of factors: high-quality thermal and waterproofing, proper use of the material, timely preventive inspection and repair work.

Experts believe that the main disadvantage of a soft roof is the accumulation of moisture in the screed and insulation. It can lead to serious consequences.

Blistering is one of the most common defects in soft roofing. This happens for two reasons.

In warm and hot seasons, the roof surface under the influence of sunlight can heat up to 90 degrees or more. The composition of roll roofing coatings includes bitumen-polymer materials. These are thermoplastic substances whose physical properties change under the influence of temperature fluctuations. The above applies to such qualities as fragility and plasticity.

Based on research, it was revealed that heating above 50 degrees leads to an increase in the plasticity of the mastics included in the bitumen-polymer materials, and the increase in the degree of adhesion to the base depends on the viscosity of the mastic, and not on adhesion.

The vapor barrier layer (in the lower part of the roofing pie) and the waterproofing carpet (in the upper part) included in the soft roof form a sealed enclosed space.

When the roof is heated under the influence of the heat emanating from it, the moisture in the under-roof space turns into steam, which significantly increases the pressure exerted on the roofing carpet. It can reach up to 2-2.5 tons per square meter.

Due to the special qualities of the thermoplastic substances included in the waterproofing materials, under conditions of high temperature and high pressure, swellings form on the roofing due to delamination of the bitumen-polymer coating. The destruction of the roofing carpet also begins.

Even when installing a waterproofing carpet at a high quality level and gluing it continuously, it is not possible to avoid the formation of blisters.

Increase in the level of thermal conductivity of insulation. Moisture accumulated under the layer of waterproofing material leads to deterioration thermal insulation characteristics insulation layer.

Already with humidification by 1 or 2%, the level of thermal conductivity of the insulation increases by 30-40%. As a result, you have to spend much more money on heating.

As a result of waterlogging of the insulation, not only heat loss increases, but also mold develops rapidly.

Destruction of the waterproofing carpet and screed. The screed in most cases consists of sand-cement mortars, which are capillary-porous material. All pores are filled with air and connected to each other. When in under roof space moisture enters, the pores are partially filled with water. As the temperature drops environment the water crystallizes and increases significantly in volume.

As a result of this process, crystallization pressure of enormous force is exerted on the walls of the capillaries, due to which microcracks form. Over time, the leveling screed breaks down. A similar process also occurs in waterproofing material.

Where does moisture come from?

Moistening the insulation layer can occur in two ways.

Moisture can penetrate into the space between the layers from the environment (fog, rain, high air humidity) through defects in the roofing carpet. It also comes from the inside of the room (vapors condensing in the under-roof space) through places of damage in the layer of vapor barrier material.

Since the amount of moisture in warm air is much higher than in cold air, then in winter time The movement of water vapor through the layers of enclosing structures occurs from the inside of the room to the outside.

It should be noted that in residential areas the air is saturated with vapor, since a person exhales about a liter of water in a vapor state per day. If we add to this indicator moisture from the process of cooking, cleaning, washing, showering and bathing, then the figure increases to 12-15 liters.

The presence of an increased level of moisture in the heat-insulating material is also due to climatic factors - precipitation, air humidity during work on installing the roofing carpet. For example, if the work is carried out in winter period, then it is almost impossible to avoid snow or moisture getting under the roof.

With a significant increase in moisture levels, eliminating its local entry through the roofing carpet and areas of intense moisture is not enough. Additional drying of the insulation layer is necessary, otherwise you will have to completely dismantle the roof and replace the insulation.

However complete dismantling roofing is not always possible.

In this case, condensation and excess moisture are removed through evaporation - without expensive and complex work to replace the waterproofing carpet and insulation.

This also makes it possible to avoid leaks during repair work.

The efficiency of evaporation is determined by the speed of the ventilation air mass flow and its circulation.

Since there is a big difference between the temperature and vapor pressure from inside the roof and outside (in the hot season, the internal layers heat up to 70 degrees, and the external layers up to 90), measures must be taken to ensure that the external and internal air are mixed.

As a result, it is possible to achieve a decrease in the air temperature inside the room and a shift of moisture to the upper layers of insulation. This will create favorable conditions for its evaporation and partial drying of the insulation layer.

As the thermal insulation layer dries, the parts of the building and the roofing carpet also dry out. Drying the insulation using natural ventilation leads to the restoration of its operational properties, since this process does not affect the physical and mechanical properties of the heat-insulating layer.

Operating principle and functions of aerators

To dry the insulation, ventilation pipes (aerators) are installed. The principle of their operation is based on creating draft in the pipe of the device by creating a low-pressure area due to external wind flows and using the pressure difference in the under-roof space and in the environment.

Functions of aerators are as follows:

  • contribute to the removal of rising from interior space towards the roof of water vapor - before it can cause any damage
  • roofing structure;
  • reduce the pressure arising in the structure, which causes the formation of bubbles on flat roofs with soft coverings;
  • prevent the formation of condensation (later flowing into the thermal insulation layer) in the lower part of the waterproofing material.

A roof aerator is essentially a pipe with a diameter of 63 to 110 mm, covered with an umbrella on top to protect it from precipitation.

In most cases, the material for the manufacture of aerators is low-density polyethylene.

Types of aerators

Roof aerators come in different models and sizes. They are used to ventilate the under-roof space, remove condensation and remove moist air outside.

They can be installed both during construction and on an already erected roof.

During repair work, aerators are extremely necessary to timely prevent the occurrence of rotting areas in the roof structure and eliminate the risk of roof leakage.

Installation of aerators for metal tile roofing is carried out in the upper part of the roof, as close as possible to the ridge. The device body is made from a material that is resistant to acid, ultraviolet radiation, corrosion, and temperature changes. Currently, the best choices are stainless steel and durable plastic.

On soft roofs, aerators are installed evenly over the entire surface at the highest points.

Roof aerators can withstand temperatures ranging from minus 50 to plus 90 degrees. They are installed on all types of roofs and roofing.

The number of required aerators is determined by their technical characteristics and the area of the roof slopes, as well as the condition of the roofing carpet and the level of moisture concentration in the interior.

For specific purpose buildings with increased level humidity (swimming pools, baths, saunas, laundries), the number of necessary aerators should be calculated at the design stage of the building.

Aerators are either point or continuous. With the help of devices of the first type, ventilation of individual sections of the roof is ensured. Aerators of the second type are installed along the entire length of the roof and serve for general ventilation.

Point aerators

Produced in two versions:

pitched– for installation on roof slopes;

skating– for installation on a ridge.

Pitched aerators are installed in those areas where it is necessary to increase the movement of air masses:

  • on slopes of significant length or slopes of complex design;
  • on ridges and roof valleys;
  • in those areas where the ventilated gap is interrupted.

An obstacle to free air circulation may be an attic window or a skylight. In such places, it is advisable to install aerators on both sides of the interfering part.

To increase ventilation efficiency, care must be taken to correct placement aerators. They should be located at a short distance from the ridge (about 15 cm). If the insulation of the roof structure was not carried out “under the ridge,” then a pressure chamber is formed in the upper part in which vapors are concentrated. When using an aerator, they evaporate from the roof into the surrounding space.

Ridge options are used for attics with ridge insulation. They help eliminate vapors throughout the ridge structure. Such aerators work based on the use of convection - the ability of warm air masses to rise upward. There, under the ridge, they find a way out. At the same time, cold currents penetrate through the ventilation channels from under the eaves.

One of the advantages of the ridge model of aerators is the removal of harmful fumes from bitumen, a material used in the construction of soft roofs, to the outside.

Since these devices are hidden under the roof covering, they are almost impossible to notice from the outside.

How to install an aerator

The technology for installing aerators is as follows.

  • In the place where it is planned to install the ventilation pipe, a window is cut out in the screed. It is necessary to ensure that it passes through the roofing carpet to the point where the insulation is located.
  • If for some reason the insulation in a given place turns out to be damp, it must certainly be replaced with dry material whose thermal conductivity meets the required standards.
  • After this, to securely fasten the aerator to the roof, a layer of special mastic must be applied to the base of the pipe located below.
  • To attach the aerator to the screed, use self-tapping screws, which must be evenly distributed around the circumference of the aerator “skirt”. You will need 6 of them.
  • The base of the ventilation pipe is protected by using an additional layer of waterproofing material.

As already mentioned, the need to install ventilation is determined depending on the shape of the roof, its size, the degree of indoor air humidity, and the general condition of the vapor barrier of the roof structure.

If the roof is flat, with a simple configuration and parameters that comply with standards, then for every 100 sq. meters, it is recommended to install one aerator.

It is necessary to ensure that the distance between the aerators is no more than 12 meters.

When located on a roof with a pronounced ridge and valley, aerators are installed along the ridge and at the boundary of the valley watershed.

Prices

The modern construction market offers a wide selection of different models of roofing aerators. The minimum price for the device is 260 rubles, and the maximum can reach up to 3000 rubles.

You can navigate the cost of aerators based on the examples given.

Video instructions on how to install a point aerator on flexible tiles.

In order to use a soft roof for a long time and, no less important, safely, you need to take care of proper ventilation under the roof. The lack of ventilation of the space under the roof is fraught with a lot of troubles - from leaks, the smell of dampness to the very rapid destruction of the roof covering material, which, believe me, is not cheap at all. Installation of aerators on soft roof- one of the important elements, but not used by everyone. We want to show the necessity of its device.

The problem can be solved by installing aerators on a soft roof. The air circulating through these artificial ventilation ducts prevents the accumulation of condensation and, accordingly, protects wooden elements from rotting, mold formation, dries out the insulation layer of the roofing pie, as well as more.

Thus, the presence of ventilation aerators for a soft roof protects it from damage and guarantees comfortable accommodation in the house.

Why does moisture condense under the roof?

Even the presence of vapor barrier and waterproofing in the roofing pie cannot completely block the access of wet vapors, human waste products, from residential premises.

When warm steam comes into contact with a colder surface, then, as is known from physics courses, it begins to condense, forming tiny drops of water. They settle on various materials and structures (rafters, insulation, etc.) and impregnate them.

Moisture can get into the under-roof space and outside. Warm air, accumulated in the attic, warms up the roof from the inside, which is why the snow cover on the roof begins to melt in winter. As the temperature drops, ice forms in some places. Under appropriate conditions, it also melts. Through the joints roofing material water penetrates inside and the roof thus begins to leak.

The covering on the roof also suffers. When the temperature drops, moisture penetrating into the formed microcracks can destroy the material. As a result, microcracks become visible, perhaps even through.

The most common defects on soft roofs caused by excess moisture are:

  • Bubbles on the surface. As a rule, the top layer of such a roof is waterproofing, and the bottom layer is vapor barrier. Essentially, they form a closed, airtight loop.
  • In hot weather, the temperature of the roofing pie can reach as much as 100°. Under such conditions, the water accumulated in the circuit turns into steam, ready to evaporate. This can cause swelling on the surface or destruction of the roof.
  • The efficiency of the insulation decreases. Wet thermal insulation loses its effectiveness: getting wet by two percent increases the thermal conductivity of the insulation by forty percent. As a result, the roof begins to retain heat much worse. Accordingly, the cost of heating increases.
  • Floors are destroyed. The structure of the cement-sand compositions from which they are usually made is capillary-porous. As soon as the temperature drops, the water trapped in these pores crystallizes. Having increased in volume, it presses on the pores from the inside with greater force. As a result, they are destroyed.

What is the essence of roof aeration?

Excess moisture from under the roof is removed through evaporation, which is made possible by the movement of air flows. Pressure levels inside and outside the house differ greatly, so air will begin to circulate as soon as the two environments are connected.

Creating effective ventilation for a cold attic is quite simple. It is enough to limit yourself to a dormer window, cracks in the ridge area or a loose fit of the eaves overhangs.

In the case of warm attics or attics, such a solution is unacceptable, since in the cold season, unregulated ventilation will cause a decrease in the temperature in the rooms.

The best option for them are roof aerators for soft roofs (photo below), through which the spaces under and above the roof are connected. In the passage pipe of the aerator for flexible tiles, a forced draft is formed, caused by the pressure difference, which helps to draw wet vapors out.

aerator for flexible tiles

In order for roof ventilation from a soft roof to function normally, an air supply from the outside is necessary. They enter through ventilation gaps (vents) provided on the eaves. The air coming from the street heats up as it passes through the warm attic, then rushes upward - directly to the roof. Draft formed in the roof aerator , removes the air flow through the passage pipe and exhausts it outside.

On a note

Ridge aerator for soft roofing correct installation in one hour, it passes air twice through the eaves vents on the eaves and layers of the roofing pie, drying and ventilating it.

Installing aerators on a soft roof in the required quantity ensures dryness of both the roof covering and the insulation. It is noteworthy that ventilation of a soft roof through roof aerator can prevent the accumulation of moisture under new roof, as well as drying an old cake that has already been saturated with moisture.

Types of aerators

There are three types of installations that work to ventilate the under-roof space:

  • Continuous ones are mainly mounted on the ridge. The model must be positioned along the entire length of the junction of the slopes. Externally the structure looks like corner element with holes. Open cavities are protected by barriers that prevent precipitation, dust and insects from entering the roof.

  • Point aerators are located in separate areas of the roof where the removal of moisture and steam is most necessary. Most often these are stingrays, less often - skates. They are installed in a certain order. Each such structure is nothing more than a ventilation pipe with a protective cap. Usually the latter has the appearance of a “box” or “fungus”.

On a note

A point pitched structure is connected to the roof by means of a flat base, a ridge structure has an angular base, through which it mates with the roof near the roofing rib.

  • Turbines are the most powerful: they extract moisture both from the roofing pie and from the premises of the house. To extract moist air, the device is equipped with an electric drive. Models of this type are selected taking into account the slope of the slope. It should also be noted that they are not suitable for installation on slopes with a large angle of inclination.

It is important to note that each type of roof covering requires an aerator made of a specific material. Let's look at a few examples. Let's start with bitumen shingles.

  • The roof space aerator in this case is made of polypropylene, which is highly impact resistant. In addition, it successfully resists temperature changes, ultraviolet radiation, and corrosion. As a rule, slab joints or the highest elevation of the slope are chosen as installation locations.

  • For metal tiles. The aerator is made from metals that are resistant to various aggressive influences, including corrosion. Install on almost any part of the roof.
  • For a professional sheet. The installations are made of the same material as in the previous case, only it needs to be installed closer to the ridge.

Design features suggest significant differences in the approach to installing aerators on soft roofs.

Installation of aerators on a soft roof step by step

Let us remind you what an aerator is (look at the photo). This is an artificial ventilation duct that works both to draw moisture out from under the roof and to circulate air.

Let us consider, separately, how each type of aerator, ridge and point, is mounted.

The design of the ridge version is extremely simple. It is suitable for roofs with a slope ranging from 12 to 45°.

  • A ventilation groove 30–80 mm thick is cut on both sides of the ridge or at its top for ventilation. The choice of specific thickness is initially determined by the manufacturer. To work with a solid base, use a circular saw.
  • The slots should end 300 mm short of the edge of the ridge and not violate the integrity of the slopes on both sides.
  • Ridge tiles are applied to the solid areas remaining along the edges of the ridge.
  • Then a ridge aerator is applied. All of its segments are fixed to elongated roofing nails or to screws, which are screwed through the finished holes on the part. The segments themselves are attached similarly to the parts of the constructor.
  • On finished design ridge tiles are laid. The installation principle differs little from the usual method: the only difference is in the fastening elements. These must be elongated fasteners.
  • The tightness of the structure ensures silicone sealant, with which its ends are sealed.

The video details the nuances of the process of installing aerators on a soft roof.

Diagram of a point ventilation device for a soft roof

The installation diagram for the point version is somewhat more complicated:

  • As you know, soft roofing is laid on continuous sheathing from plywood or OSB. A hole is cut out in it, deepened to the heat-insulating layer. Its diameter must exactly correspond to the dimensions of the internal opening of the artificial ventilation gap channel. If the diameter is smaller, then dents will begin to appear on the surface of the roof covering, where moisture or dirt will accumulate; if it is larger, then an additional sealing gasket will be needed.

If for any reason the insulation in this place is too wet, then it must be completely or partially replaced. In this way, it will be possible to maintain the thermal conductivity of the heat insulator at the proper level.

  • To mark, the skirt is placed on the sheathing, the contours of the ventilation duct opening are traced using a pencil or nail, and a hole is cut out using a jigsaw along the resulting contour.
  • An aerator skirt is placed on top of it, which is fixed with at least 6 roofing nails or screws.

According to the recommendations of some manufacturers, to increase adhesion, in addition to fasteners, they additionally use bitumen mastic. With this approach, first sealant is applied to the back side of the base of the tube and firmly glued to the slope, after which fasteners are used.

  • A protective frame is put on the skirt and screwed with self-tapping screws. After that, a cap is installed that protects the roof pie from the penetration of precipitation, snapped into place and secured with self-tapping screws.
  • The joint is sealed and an additional layer of waterproofing is required.
  • The installation of the remaining point models (according to calculations) is carried out similarly, which form a single ventilation system.
  • The tiles are laid on top of the skirt, cutting the petals along the abutment line.

  • When installing aerators, the size and shape of the roof, the state of the vapor barrier, and the degree of air humidity are taken into account.
  • It is recommended to install aerators for flat roofs with a simple configuration at the rate of 1 fungus/100 sq. m of roofing surface. However, they should be no more than 12 m apart from each other.
  • If the roof structure has valleys or a clearly defined ridge, artificial ventilation ducts are located in watershed areas.
  • It is better to entrust the calculation of ventilated installation systems for buildings with high humidity levels to construction design companies.
  • Professionals recommend completing aeration systems from the same supplier. This way you can reduce the risk of problems occurring when defective parts are replaced.

The most popular brands of aerator manufacturers

One of the first models of the family of solid devices is the ridge. Let's start with him.

  • Ridge Master Aerators(USA) (Plus and other modification of HipMaster). The profile shape design, it is patented) eliminates damage.

Ridge Master models can only be installed on strictly horizontal ridges. They are not recommended for use on inclined ridges. Hip Master is suitable for these cases. Let us note some advantages of ventilation aerators from this manufacturer.

  • A special patented system for protection from precipitation and wind. It has a special design of internal partitions, designed on a computer.
  • The protective frame is ultrasonically welded.
  • Built-in interlocking edges allow you to quickly and much more securely connect structural parts, increase resistance to weather influences, and ensure an accurate fit to the slopes.
  • The aerator successfully resists crushing. It features support for fasteners and specially designed ribs to keep the roof line level and smooth.
  • The structure does not form dents, for example, from branches or cracks due to sudden temperature changes, and it is resistant to hammer blows.
  • Manufacturer's warranty – 40 years.
  • TOawning aerator for soft roofing TechnoNIKOL– completely similar to Ridge Master, but differs in length. Ventilation efficiency: approximately 1 element/25 sq.m.

TechnoNIKOL company also offers various options point models. Here are some of them.

  • KTV pitched. Used exclusively on roofing coverings of their bituminous shingles. They are attached to the roof through a passage element during the installation of soft tiles. The device is difficult to notice on the roof. Ventilation efficiency: approximately 1 element/5-10 sq.m.
  • KTV-alpha. This is an economical version of the pitched model of the KTV aerator for flexible tiles. Protected from weather influences and insects by a polyurethane (reticulated) filter. Ventilation efficiency: approximately 1 element/20 sq.m.
  • Pilot pitched. Used on roofs covered with bitumen shingles. It is attached to the roof through the passage element directly during the process of laying the roofing material. The lower sliding element allows it to be fixed strictly vertically at any roof slope. Ventilation efficiency: approximately 1 element/5 sq.m.

  • The Finnish manufacturer SK Toute offers a wide range of purpose aerators. Vilpe Vent models fundamentally different from products from other manufacturers:
  • Exceptionally high quality of materials used, which ensures excellent characteristics of such systems: exceptional resistance to aggressive environmental influences and ultraviolet radiation.
  • They are reliably protected from corrosion.
  • They are universal, that is, they can be installed on any roofing system.
  • High degree soundproofing.

People living in their private homes may encounter a problem such as the accumulation of excess moisture under the roof. This has a bad effect on the properties of the thermal insulation layer. There is a cardinal solution - dismantling the roof and then replacing all the insulation. This method is quite expensive and time consuming, not to mention the fact that it cannot be used in every season. The second method is to install a device such as a roof aerator.

Roof aerators, what are they?

A roof aerator is a device that is designed to provide ventilation to the space under the roof. With its help, you can avoid the accumulation of moisture, extend the life of the roof and preserve its properties. This process is called “aeration”, which is where the name of the device comes from.

Aerators are designed to ensure air condensation and are installed directly on roof covering. Since roof structures and covering materials vary, aerators have their own installation and operation features for each type.

Principle of operation

Roof mounted aerator

The operating principle is based on one of the laws of physics, in which excess moisture can be evaporated - this process directly depends on the speed of circulation of moist air. The air temperature outside and indoors varies greatly, and therefore there is a need to ensure diffusion processes, during which different types of gaseous media are mixed. This can lead to a drop in indoor temperature, and moisture will collect under the surface of the roof. Upon contact with the external environment, they will create ideal conditions to squeeze it out. It is on this law that the principle of operation of the device is based; in fact, it all comes down to using an aerator for ventilation.

Important! Aerators come in both iron and plastic, so before installing them you need to calculate whether the roof and corrugated sheeting can withstand the load from the device.

There are several varieties that will suit different roofs. For example, aerators for metal tiles, flexible tiles and others are sold. If you do not know how to properly install these devices, then it is best to use the services of a specialist.

Aerator for pitched roof

A pitched roof has a sloping surface. However, the space in attics often becomes difficult to navigate and often resembles a warehouse. It follows that the need for insulation and installation of additional ventilation disappears completely. The optimal angle for this roof is usually in the range from 30 to 50 degrees. On a pitched roof, snow does not actually accumulate, since it simply rolls down, but there is an unwanted load from the winds.

Note! A roof aerator is usually installed exclusively on insulated roofs directly above residential premises.

Installed aerators on a pitched roof

The supporting structure consists of timber rafters and sheathing. The insulation is usually placed between rafter legs and the inside, after which it is insulated using a vapor barrier coating. In any case, there is humidity in the air of a living space; the coating protects the insulation from moisture. WITH outside a special film against moisture and water is installed, which protects the insulation from rainwater and condensation.

At first glance, the structure has no flaws, but not a single coating is capable of absolutely protecting the roofing pie. Consequently, moist air accumulates and stagnates under the roof covering, which causes wood to rot and steel to corrode. Installing aerators helps combat this problem, as the devices create fresh air circulation.

Important! For this type of roof, 2 types of aerators are installed: point and ridge.

Point-type devices are mounted at the highest point, approximately 150 mm from the ridge. The air outside is colder, and when it gets into the under-roof space, it becomes warmer; accordingly, according to the laws of physics, it tends to rise upward. As a result, simple air circulation occurs.

Flat roof aerator

IN flat options the roof has a different structure: the floor slabs are leveled using cement-sand screeds, after which insulation is laid. Then another cement-sand screed is mounted on top of the insulation, or two layers of flat sheets of asbestos cement are used. After installation, the welded roofing carpet is firmly bonded to the screed. However, during operation, materials may experience changes in ambient temperatures. Coefficient thermal expansion for concrete, cement, asbestos and bitumen varies quite a lot, so unwanted stresses result from this. Adhesion and connections are disrupted, and air bubbles appear accordingly.

Flat roof aerators

Important! Aerators on a flat roof are mounted under the built-up layers, which allows you to remove stress and remove bubbles. In this case, it is preferable to use a roof aerator for a soft roof or an aerator for a flat roof.

Aerators that are used for roofing made of bituminous materials of a guided nature are not particularly special. design features, they consist of the usual elements:

  • skirts;
  • tubes;
  • cap

Typically, aerators are made of high-strength polypropylene and can withstand temperatures ranging from -50 to +130 degrees Celsius. Such roofing devices with an area of 80–100 m² should be located at a distance of 12 meters from each other.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantage of the devices is the ability to remove most of the moisture, which helps to avoid damage to the roof. This leads to the durability of the materials and even protects the roof from leaks. Removing moisture may cause metal shingles to not corrode or cause the problem to occur later. Plus, a dry roof better retains its thermal insulation properties. This will make it possible to seriously save on heating. This also helps to maintain a favorable microclimate in the building, which, in turn, helps to avoid the appearance of fungus and mold.

Also, aerators are a fairly inexpensive option for eliminating unwanted moisture in the roofing pie. In 2018, their cost varies from 300 rubles to 5,000 rubles per piece. There is a huge variety of aerators on the market now. different companies, both foreign and domestic.

Important! The device is suitable for installation on any type of roof and can be combined with all types of roofing materials. Installation can be carried out on roofs of complex shapes where there is a difference in height. The aerator can be installed at any stage of construction or during the operation of the building. Installation does not require special skills or tools.

Disadvantages include the inability point aerators ensure proper ventilation of the entire roof covering, this can lead to the appearance of an area where air will stagnate.

Important! This aerator is mounted exclusively on the ridge, which ensures excellent air circulation in the attic.

Operating standards:

  • It is imperative to have holes on the overhangs to promote air flow.
  • Installation of devices along the entire length of the ridge so that they form one system.
  • Tile ridges are usually placed on top of aerators, thus masking the devices and not damaging them. appearance roofs.

The installation technology is carried out in compliance with the following steps:

  1. With help circular saw a groove is cut out at the base for ventilation and other needs of the system. If only 1 aerator is installed, then the hole should be located at the top of the ridge, if two - on the sides of the ridge. The slots are made in such a way that they break off 30 cm from the edge of the ridge.
  2. Ridge shingles should be located on the sides of the ridge.
  3. All segments must fit together, using the example of construction kit parts. The aerator is attached to the roof using special nails extended type or screws.
  4. The aerator profile is covered with tiles. The petals are attached with an overlap.
  5. Afterwards, it is necessary to seal the ends of the aerator where it comes into contact with the roof.

Installation of point aerators

If it is not possible to install ridge aerators, then they can be replaced with point ones. You need a few more of them, but you also need to calculate the area for mounting them.

As a rule, they are used:

  • On roof coverings where the slope is less than 12 degrees, or on flat structures.
  • For greater efficiency ventilation system or as a supplement.
  1. A hole is cut to fit the internal gap of the channel next to the aerator.
  2. Afterwards, the aerator skirt is mounted, which is secured with special roofing nails or other fasteners.
  3. The top of the skirt is glued with waterproofing materials.
  4. The skirt is glued with shingles, slightly trimming at the points of contact.
  5. The aerator mesh is placed over the skirt and then secured with self-tapping screws. Afterwards, the cap is installed and also secured with fasteners.

Thus, using the tips and instructions, you can quite successfully install aerators of any type of model on different types of roofs. The devices will improve the moisture situation in the house and extend the life of the materials from which the roof is made.

The main purpose of the aerator for roof ventilation is to remove moisture from the under-roof space, as well as to ventilate all layers of the roofing pie. Soft roofing is most sensitive to moisture. Its design is a multilayer structure, in which materials are laid in layers. The basis is reinforced concrete slab coating, it acts as a barrier between internal part indoors and outdoor environment. During operation, the roof covering may swell and peel due to the penetration of moist fumes from inside the building. To prevent such situations, aerators are installed on the roof as a preventive measure.

How does the aerator work?

The device is very simple. It consists of a piece of pipe, a tight-fitting skirt for attaching to the roof and a cap or lid. In terms of design, there are many solutions. The principle of operation of the aerator is based on the difference in pressure inside and outside the building. That is, moist air is removed naturally through the aerator pipe, and fresh air comes in its place. The most favorable place to install a roof aerator for metal tiles is considered to be the space at the ridge.

Individual elements of the deflector are made of materials resistant to:

  • acid and alkaline influences;
  • ultraviolet radiation;
  • temperature changes, the material must tolerate sub-zero temperatures and heat equally well;
  • corrosion.

The best options today are durable technical plastics and stainless steel.

Roof aerators on a flat soft roof are usually installed evenly over the entire surface of the roof. It is considered the norm to install one aerator for every 100 m2 of roof area. Whatever the roof covering and roof design, you should not do it yourself. The number of devices and their design are determined by professional calculations based on initial data. These are:

  • roofing area;
  • specifications roofs;
  • layer-by-layer composition of the roofing pie and its condition;
  • level of moisture concentration inside the building and under the roof.

For very specific premises, with a high level of humidity, all calculations regarding the number and location of installation of aerators on the roof are carried out at the design stage. It's about about baths, saunas, swimming pools, laundries. Although every builder should consider installing this necessary fixture, it will help extend the life of the roof.

Features of installing the aerator

First let's decide on constructive solutions. Aerators can be point or continuous. The first ones are located over the entire surface of the roof; they provide ventilation to individual sections of the roof. The installation of second aerators on a soft roof is carried out along its entire length, so that it is possible to ventilate the entire roof.

Point devices are manufactured in two versions:

  • Pitched ones are installed on a continuous roof surface. Places for their location are chosen where it is necessary to increase air movement. Individual components require special attention complex roofs: valleys, skylights, lanterns, combs. In these areas, it makes sense to install aerators for soft or other roofing on both sides of the obstacle.
  • The skating ones are mounted on the ridge. A mass of warm, moist air, as a rule, rises up from inside the premises and goes outside through the ridge structures. At the same time, cornice ventilation ducts deliver portions of fresh air from outside. In this way, the air mass is renewed. Ridge aerators for soft roofs help to enhance these processes, as well as remove bitumen fumes from the roofing material.

The installation of aerators can be carried out during the construction of a building, during the replacement of roofing, or as an independent procedure for an existing roof. You can install an aerator for a flat soft roof yourself, but it is still better to entrust this matter to specialists. The process itself looks like this:

  • First you need to determine the installation location of the deflectors and choose their design.
  • A window 10-20 mm wider than the diameter of the pipe is cut out of the roofing.
  • The entire thickness of the resulting hole must be generously coated with bitumen mastic.
  • The roof aerator pipe for a soft roof should be treated in the same way.
  • The pipe is inserted into the window, secured, and then the entire structure is assembled.

Fastening to the main covering is carried out using special roofing fasteners (screws, dowels). Particular attention should be paid to the interface between the aerator and the roof. To guarantee, it is better to lay an additional layer of waterproofing or roofing material under the aerator skirt.

Advantages of roofing with aerators

The aerator itself does not perform the function of a fan and does not remove moisture. Its main task is to promote high-quality air exchange and maintain humidity levels within normal limits. As a result of the interaction of deflectors with cornice and ridge channels, internal cavities dry out faster roofing structures. Natural air circulation is enhanced.

Properly installed roof aerators serve as a good guarantee that moisture from the outside will not penetrate under the covering. However, it will help the flow of moist air from the premises and under-roof space to escape. This simple solution helps preserve the roof and significantly extend its service life.

The device requires virtually no maintenance. This is a completely autonomous device. Unless from time to time you need to check whether birds or random debris have gotten inside. The pipe should not become clogged.

Among the many structural elements of a soft roof, soft roof aerators are the most important.

This is due to the fact that if there is insufficient ventilation of the internal space of the roof, moisture and condensation accumulate inside the insulation and screed.

This leads to deterioration of thermal insulation, the appearance of mold, and the gradual destruction of the screed and waterproofing layer.

As a result, swelling of the soft roofing occurs. For these reasons, it is necessary to install soft roof coverings carefully and carefully, taking into account all the technical nuances.

Causes of moisture and the purpose of aerators

Aerators for ventilation of soft roofs are one of the mandatory structural elements of such roofs.

They are designed to prevent the formation of moisture and water vapor inside the space that is located directly under the roof, and to remove them outside.

Despite the presence of insulating layers in the roof structure, condensation and water vapor penetrate there in two ways: from the inside and from the outside.

Firstly, in the process household activities residents, during their stay inside the house, steam is generated, which rises, accumulates at the top, penetrating under the roof.

When warm internal steam collides with cold ambient air, condensation forms.

Such droplets of moisture are “processed” metal elements roofs, sheathing, rafters, insulation, methodically destroying them.

Secondly, during the cold season, due to the temperature difference between inside and outside, ice forms on the outside of the roof.

The ice periodically melts, water seeps into the joints, and the soft roof begins to leak over time.

In this case, the coating itself becomes covered with cracks, which increase in size and are then destroyed when the water inside them freezes. As a result, the entire coating fails.

In summer, on the contrary, due to direct exposure to sunlight, the outer covering heats up to critical temperatures, and internal moisture tends to evaporate through the roof.

As a result, swelling occurs and, ultimately, destruction of the roofing surfaces.

In addition to such problems, swelling of thermal insulation reduces its insulating properties. As a result, heat is not retained inside the house, so the roof becomes cold.

When installing various roofs of private houses, a person is faced with the problem of how to prevent the formation of moisture inside the roof structures.

You can get rid of accumulated moisture and prevent its occurrence by arranging circulation air flow between internal space home and external environment.

A roof aerator for ventilating a soft roof due to forced draft, which arises due to the difference in pressure from inside and outside, pulls wet vapors out from under the roof structure.

This is most relevant for attics and warm attics, since natural air circulation occurs in the cold space under the roof through numerous cracks.

To install ventilation correctly, it is important to ensure a continuous supply of fresh air. Ventilation vents need to be made in the eaves.

This will allow air to pass through the attic space, heat it, and move upward under the roof.

For effective air circulation inside the roof structure, it is important to install such a ventilation system with the required number of its individual elements, which is calculated depending on the roof area.

Installing ventilation aerators on a soft roof ensures dryness of the coating and thermal insulation.

Aerators for soft roofs must have certain qualities and have the following characteristics:

  • resistance to direct exposure to sunlight;
  • resistance to corrosion processes;
  • resistance to extreme temperature changes;
  • strength.

Made from durable plastic, such devices meet all requirements and therefore fit all parameters.

A roof ventilation element installed on an angle that corresponds to the top line of the connection of two roof slopes is called a “ridge”.

The ridge aerator for soft roofs is a continuous ventilation system.

By its design, such a device is most suitable for installation on the upper corner: it is a corner piece with evenly spaced holes, covered with protection from possible contamination.

System installation ridge aerator on a soft roof it is quite simple, since no special calculations are required.

The ventilation system is mounted directly on the “ridge” along its entire length.

It is necessary to connect all the elements into one complete system, which is covered with ridge tiles on top. It is important to ensure a constant flow of fresh air from inside to outside.

You can install a ridge aerator yourself without much difficulty, following a certain algorithm.

All work is performed in the following sequence:

  1. A ventilation groove is cut at the base of the “ridge,” which can be located either at its top or on both sides. The main thing is to leave an untouched gap of about 30 cm from the edge of this corner, and keep the thickness of the ventilation gap within 3 - 8 cm;
  2. Ridge tiles are laid along the entire edges;
  3. Using roofing nails or screws from individual parts a ridge aerator is installed, which should ultimately represent an integral functional structure;
  4. At the next stage, this structure is covered with ridge tiles: in this case, the petals of the covering are mounted overlapping;
  5. The ends of the aerator must be sealed with silicone.

The soft roof aeration system installed in this way will ensure high-quality ventilation over the entire area.

Point aerator

In addition to the ridge aerator, point ventilation options are used, which are installed on the soft roof over the entire area.

A point ventilation element (wind vane) is used in the following cases:

  • for roofs with a slight slope of up to 12 degrees;
  • to improve the efficiency of the ridge ventilation system;
  • when the roofing surface adjoins vertical walls and the impossibility of installing a ridge aerator.

On pitched roofs, point aerators are installed at a distance of no less than 0.5 m from the ridge. One small-diameter wind vane is installed per 60 m2, and one larger diameter – per 100-120 m2.

The distance between such roof ventilation devices should be approximately 10 meters. In accordance with all this data, calculations are made.

It should be remembered that on flat roofs, point ventilation elements must be placed at the highest points along the surface slope.

Installation of point aerators on a soft roof must be carried out in the following sequence:

  • when repairing a soft roof, it is necessary to cut a hole at the site of the swelling, and when building a new covering, it is better to cut a hole at the junction of the insulation boards;
  • in the roof sheathing you need to cut a hole 10 - 20 mm larger than the diameter of the weather vane, which passes through the layer of screed and insulation;
  • install the weather vane over the cut hole and secure it with nails or screws around its perimeter;
  • coat the top of the skirt with bitumen adhesives to ensure waterproofing of the joints;
  • after drying, lay a geotextile pad treated with liquid rubber around the entire perimeter;
  • the skirt of the weather vane should be covered with tiles, an aerator mesh should be placed on top and secured with screws;
  • at the last stage you need to put on the cap and fix it.

By following this sequence, you can easily install such a roof ventilation system on your own.

Installing ventilation aerators on a soft roof prevents the formation of condensation, mold, and mildew inside the roofing “pie.”

All this protects structural elements roof and ensures a long service life.

Therefore, from the very beginning, when building a roof, it is necessary to carefully consider the installation and carry out correct installation aerators.

Such measures will help ensure effective air circulation, freeing the internal layers of the roof structure from moisture and condensation.

Without a roof aerator, it is impossible to complete the installation of flat and pitched roofs. Such an aerator helps to ventilate the room and helps remove excess moisture.

Of course, you need to know what types of aerators there are and how they differ from each other. It is also worth talking about the features of installing a roof with an aerator.

There are clear advantages to using such technology that need to be mentioned.

Ventilation is necessary for any roof, because in this case the roof space will last much longer.

If a lot of moisture accumulates in the insulation or waterproofing material, this can harm the condition of the roof.

Once the water freezes due to temperature changes, the roof may lose its functionality and reliability. That is why the installation of the aerator must be carried out when installing the roof.

What advantages does an aerator have and why should it be used:

  • reliable ventilation of the space under the roof;
  • removing any excess moisture;
  • removal of water vapor;
  • in the case of a flat roof, the aerator prevents swelling of the roofing material;
  • removal of any condensation from the roof space.

Regardless of the characteristics of the roof, installing an aerator will help extend its life. In addition, the aerator is easy to install and will not cause much discomfort to the roof owner.

Operating principle and types of aerators

The principle of operation of the aerator is based on the difference in pressure in the roof space and outside. Thanks to the original aerator cap, natural draft increases, which gives the device the greatest efficiency.

Of course, you need to talk about the types of aerators and the key features of each device.

Plastic aerators

Such devices ideal for use on.

The aerator for such a roof should be installed on the surface, as close as possible to the ridge. In addition, it must be resistant to temperature changes, corrosion, and the negative effects of ultraviolet radiation.

Plastic meets all requirements, and this aerator has an affordable price.

The most practical and durable options. Such aerators are acid-resistant and can be used over a wide temperature range.

In particular, the aerator works effectively with temperature changes from -50 to +90 degrees Celsius.

Aerator installation methods

It is used in cases where the roof has already been built and there is no time to dismantle it.

To do this, install ventilation pipes into which small-diameter pipes are inserted (no more than 7–12 centimeters). This aerator, shaped like a pipe, is securely closed with a lid similar to an umbrella to prevent moisture from getting inside.

At the marked place, a small hole is made in the roofing carpet with a depth down to the insulation, where the pipe will be located. The bottom of the pipe is specially coated with mastic and pressed as tightly as possible to the roofing. This completes the installation.

On roofs with a flat roof, the aerator is installed along the entire length at the highest points, as well as at the junction of the insulating boards themselves.

If it is necessary to install aerators for industrial premises, swimming pools and baths, the number of such devices must be calculated in advance when building the premises. Installation also needs to be carried out in advance - before the final construction of the roof.

Prices for roof aerators

The cost of aerators varies greatly. So, for example, you can find models that will cost 300 rubles, but there are special variations whose price is several thousand.

For example, a Monterey aerator for roofing can cost 2,000 – 2,200 rubles.

However, here it is important to pay attention not only to the cost, but also to the scope of use of the aerator. For example, models for cost within 1,000 rubles.

Models from the manufacturer Alipai are also popular, which are also inexpensive - around 1,500 rubles. Roof aerators from TechnoNikol will be a little more expensive - in the range of 1000 - 1700 per piece.

Let's sum it up

So, what conclusions can be drawn regarding the purchase and installation of an aerator?

A roof aerator is truly a reliable protector against moisture. With its help, you can easily ventilate the under-roof space.

As a result of installing an aerator, the home owner noticeably increases the durability of the roof and its reliability. The most important thing is to choose the right aerator and install it correctly!

Video about installing a roof aerator

Ventilation of the under-roof space, roof aerators

Roof aerator, very important element on the roof, it can be mounted on roofs with various materials, as well as the angles of the slope. This element has quite a lot of functions. Firstly, the roof aerator removes water vapor that enters the under-roof pie from inside the house. This occurs before increased humidity occurs in the roof space. Secondly, roof aerators seriously increase the service life of the insulation and the entire rafter system; the wood does not dry out. And finally, the aerator prevents the accumulation of condensation at the bottom of the waterproofing, thereby the film is not overloaded with excess moisture. Ventilation of the under-roof space is an integral part of any roof structure. When in the summer the sun heats up the roofing material, which you can’t touch with your hand, then under the roof it’s almost like being in a bathhouse. Therefore, we strongly recommend installing aerators for ventilation, let your roof breathe and serve you for many years.

Soft roofing, so popular in Lately, has a lot of advantages. However, her operational properties and durability depend on how dry it is inside the roofing pie. Therefore, ventilation of the under-roof space should be given special attention when constructing continuous bitumen decks. Roof aerators, which ventilate the entire space under the roof, will help prevent moisture from stagnating in inaccessible places. The roof aerator consists of plastic that is resistant to temperature changes. This is a kind of turtle with a shell that covers it to protect it from snow and rain. In order to calculate the number of aerators on the roof, you just need to understand total area roof and divide it by fifty. Since one roof aerator is capable of ventilating no more than 50 m2 of the roof area.

The operation of such a device is based on the difference in pressure (internal and external) and the draft that occurs in the aerator pipe due to the formation of reduced pressure.

What is a roof aerator

A roof aerator is a special device for removing excess moisture from the space under the roof. This device is installed on the roof. Roof covering and slope in most cases do not matter.

Using an aerator, the insulation is dried and the process of condensate evaporation is accelerated, which allows for significant savings on repair work.

The rate of evaporation closely depends on the circulation of air flows, which are formed precisely thanks to the roof aerator.

This type of device may have:

  • different size;
  • different modification.

The direct purpose of aerators is:

  • In removing condensate;
  • In ventilation of the space under the roof;
  • In removing moist air;
  • To prevent the development of rotting processes under the roof;
  • To prevent possible risks of roof leakage.

Such devices can be installed both during construction and on an already equipped roof, and their number directly depends on the technical ability of the roof and the area of the slope. In other words, to calculate the correct number of devices for installation, it is necessary to take into account:

  1. Roof dimensions;
  2. Amount of moisture (indoors);
  3. Condition of the roof covering.

The most important problem with soft roofs is carpet swelling and roof leaks. Excess moisture can enter the space under the roof during installation work, which will subsequently lead to swelling of the coating.

A roof aerator for soft roofs will prevent the destruction of the roof covering. The advantages of Katepal soft roofing are revealed.

Roof aerators for soft roofs provide:

  • Removing steam that gets under the roofing from the premises;
  • Minimizing excess pressure in the roofing pie;

    If the pressure inside the roofing pie is too high, this can lead to the formation of bubbles on the surface of the coating, which will not only spoil the appearance of the building, but will also disrupt and significantly reduce the service life of the roof.

  • Prevents condensation.

The main enemy for a roofing surface such as metal tiles is moisture. It forms in the place (under the roofing sheet) where the protective coating is located, where scratches could have been left during installation, or in the areas of bolt holes. An aerator will help you avoid repairs and save your roof in time.

The aerator for metal roofing is a special installation that:

  1. Helps remove moist air outside;
  2. Prevents the formation of corrosion.

For corrugated roofing, the presence of an aerator, in many cases, can also be a salvation. This device will be installed under the roofing material and will perform the following tasks:

  • Will fill the roof fresh air;
  • Removes moisture from the ventilation pad;
  • Removes musty air;
  • Will remove various gases and dust outside.

Aerators have many advantages:

  • Organize ventilation;
  • Condensate is removed, which significantly extends the life of the roof;
  • Refresh indoor air;
  • They minimize the possibility of the appearance of not only mold, but also other harmful microorganisms.

Installation of a roof aerator

Installation of this type of device is carried out in several stages:

  • A special hole is made in the roof, which should reach the very depth of the insulating material;

    Remember that the hole made must exactly match the size (diameter) of the aerator pipe.

  • If necessary, it is necessary to remove part of the wet insulation and replace the removed fragment with a dry one;
  • The bottom of the built-in pipe must be coated with mastic, after which it is pressed to the base of the roof;
  • The additional skirt of the pipe is secured to the roof using self-tapping screws (in a circle);
  • An additional layer of waterproofing must be installed at the bottom of the pipe.

Roof aerator TechnoNIKOL

The concept of a ventilated roof has always implied the need for 2 ventilation circuits:

  1. Ventilation of the space under the roof (part of the ventilation related to the entire building);
  2. Ventilation of the space between the waterproofing layer and the main roof covering.

Once upon a time, organizing a proper ventilation system not only for the space of the house itself, but also for the roof in particular was practically impossible to achieve. However, today, thanks to the use latest technologies and the use of all the capabilities of the roofing material, this problem is solved 100%.

Even at the building design stage, it is important to pay special attention to the ventilation system.

The advantages of installing a Technonikol roof aerator include:

  • Unified product design;
  • Extensive color range;
  • Manufactured using non-corrosive raw materials;
  • Availability of all types of ventilation elements for devices in the private sector;
  • Installation on an already finished roof;
  • Sealed and fairly simple design;
  • The product has successfully passed the test not only over time, but also under various climatic conditions;
  • Resistance to color fading under intense exposure to ultraviolet rays;
  • Installation on roofs with any slope.

One of the latest models The roofing aerator can be called the TechnoNIKOL eco roofing aerator 160x450 mm, which consists of 3 parts. Its design has been carefully thought out and allows:

  1. Remove all existing excess moisture from the entire roof pie;
  2. Increase the service life of the roofing covering;
  3. Improve thermal insulation properties.

The best solution for installing a roof of this type of equipment would be a TechnoNIKOL roof aerator. The price has a fairly flexible structure. Some samples can cost 300 rubles, while others are more advanced and complex models can cost more than 3 thousand rubles. However, in order to improve the quality of the roof and extend its service life, it is still worth considering the installation of such equipment.

Turbine roof aerator

Such an aerator is one of the possible elements of passive ventilation. In other words, a hood powered by electricity, or a pipe with an electric fan. This type of aerator operates quite silently and does not require energy consumption.

Depending on the wind speed and the diameter of the device, its turbines are capable of extracting maximum moisture not only from the roof, but also directly from the room itself.

Experts advise taking a closer look at aluminum models of turbine aerators, as they do not rust.

When choosing a turbine-type aerator, it is important to pay attention to the slope of the roof, since not any of the turbines can be installed on roofs with slopes of different degrees. Pay attention to the packaging and instructions, as this is where manufacturers write the degree of roof slope suitable for each model.

Roof aerator cost

The price of devices of this type may vary. Currently, construction companies and stores are ready to offer a huge number of devices that meet not only the latest requirements and have a huge number of capabilities, but also those devices that even an avid “economist” can afford.

The price range is quite affordable. The minimum price for a roof aerator will be 260 rubles, while the maximum can reach 3 thousand or more. In other words, there is plenty to choose from.

Video

Installation of a roof aerator requires compliance certain rules which are described in the video clip:

A roof aerator is a device whose main purpose is to remove excess moisture not only from any surfaces of the roof space, but also from inaccessible places located between the layers of the roof pie. This is just one of the areas of its use. Some types of deflectors are used in wastewater disposal systems, as well as among aquarists.

Why the roofing cake must be dry

To get a complete answer to this question, you need to understand why water is formed and what consequences it leads to.

Causes of moisture formation

The most vulnerable from these positions is the soft flat roof. According to the materials included in the cake, they are stacked on top of each other directly on concrete slab flooring, which is a barrier between the interior of the house and the external environment. When using such a structure, there is a high probability of peeling or swelling of the roof covering. How does this happen?

Water vapor from the upper floors penetrates through the ceiling into the under-roof space and condenses in the heat-insulating layer and cement-sand screed. Moisture can also seep in from the outside through tiny microcracks invisible to the eye that are present on any roofing material. There is also the option of moisture entering the under-roof space during installation work.

Moisture, once inside the “layer cake”, when heated in hot weather, turns into steam, and it, in turn, trying to “escape” from the confined space, tears the roofing carpet away from the base and swells.

Negative effects of high humidity

First of all, let's note the danger high humidity for human health, since it creates a breeding ground for the development of mold and its spread throughout the house.

Violation of the normal level of humidity leads, as a rule, to violations in the roof structure. With the onset of cold weather, the water accumulated over the summer and autumn freezes and begins to expand, simultaneously stretching the roof covering from the inside. This can lead to its ruptures and even render the coating unusable. Moreover, frozen water can also damage the screed.

On a note

If as a result destructive action water, the roof will be severely damaged, you may have to completely disassemble it, dry the surface and replace it with a new one. The event, frankly speaking, is very expensive. The optimal solution To prevent such conditions, a roof aerator is considered.

Types of aerators

All roof aerators are used to remove condensation from the under-roof space, ventilate and remove moist air outside. However, there are certain differences between them:

  • size,
  • material,
  • modification,
  • mode of action.

Deflector and roofing material

  • For soft roof:
  • removes steam trapped under the roof covering from the room;
  • minimizes excess pressure in the roofing pie, which is very important to ensure normal service life of the roof;
  • prevents the formation of condensation.

An excellent solution for soft roofing is the TechnoNIKOL roofing aerator made of weather-resistant, impact-resistant polypropylene. In flat roofs they are installed, evenly distributed over the surface, either at the joints of thermal insulation boards, or in places with the highest elevation.

When choosing the diameter of the device, two parameters are taken into account:

  • what technical characteristics does the roof aerator have?
  • what is the area of the roof?

in the photo is a roofing aerator for metal tiles

  • The main enemy of a metal roof is moisture. The main places of its accumulation are:
  • places under the roofing sheet where scratches were left during the installation process;
  • bolt hole locations.

Installing a deflector on the roof helps remove moisture from the air to the outside and prevents the formation of corrosion. Mount at most one on one sheet roof aerator.

The device body is usually made of materials that are resistant to corrosion or acidic environments, temperature changes and UV radiation. The best materials today are stainless steel and durable plastic.

  • Installation under a corrugated roof:
  • fills it with fresh air;
  • removes condensation from the ventilation cushion;
  • removes stale air;
  • removes dust and various gases outside.

In pitched roofs, the deflector is installed as close as possible to the ridge, retreating from it by about half a meter.

Design versions

ridge aerator for soft roof

The design of the aerator is a short pipe with fastening elements and strips and caps that prevent moisture from the atmosphere, birds and insects from penetrating into the under-roof space. Depending on the design, there are several options.

Installation

The best option is to install the device at the time the roof is erected. However, this does not mean that it cannot be mounted on an existing roof. The installation of such devices is carried out in several stages:

installing a deflector on the roof

  • A special hole is made in the roof, reaching to the very depth of the thermal insulation material. The dimensions of the hole made must exactly match the diameter of the deflector pipe.
  • If excessively wet insulation is found at the installation site, it is recommended to partially replace it with a new dry one.
  • To improve adhesion, bottom part bitumen is applied to the inserted pipe and only then pressed to the base of the roof.
  • The additional skirt of the pipe, the protective frame, is secured in a circle using self-tapping screws.
  • Additional waterproofing is installed at the bottom of the pipe and all joints are carefully sealed to prevent leaks from occurring.

Aerators for metal tiles have a different design. They are mounted on both slopes with a minimum distance from the ridge of 0.60 m. Installation work It is recommended to do it in summer.
