Making a mattress with your own hands: a task within everyone’s reach. DIY mattress cover - for children and adults

Furniture, including upholstered furniture, costs a lot these days. We are purchasing a luxurious furniture set in the living room or, say, an expensive modern mattress for a bed in the bedroom (for example, orthopedic) and we want, of course, to admire it for as long as possible bright colors brand new upholstery.

But fabric is a capricious person. And now the soft upholstery is frayed, in some places faded by the sun, a stain has appeared somewhere... And the presence of small children and pets in the home does not contribute to the preservation of the situation.

What's the solution? And the solution was already invented a long time ago. If you want to protect, for example, your new expensive mattress from troubles, you should simply cover it. This means you will need a protective mattress cover.

Do you think this is unnecessary? In vain! Almost everyone comes to the conclusion about the need for this useful accessory sooner or later, but sometimes the furniture is already pretty damaged by that time.

It should be recognized that a mattress cover is a functional and practical thing. In addition, it can play a decorative role in interior decoration. Covers protect expensive items from dust and stains, reduce wear and extend their service life. This is especially important for those who have an expensive (for example, orthopedic) product. A cover is simply necessary for those who have small children or bedridden patients in their family.

My own master

A mattress cover made in an original and tasteful way will definitely decorate the room and improve your mood. At the same time, sewing an ordinary cover from thin fabric is not at all difficult.

Let's try to make a removable mattress cover with our own hands. Patterns of such covers can be from the simplest (in the form of a large pillowcase-bag) to complex ones, decorated with decorative elements.

It will be easiest for a novice dressmaker to make a model with an elastic drawstring that securely fixes the product in place. If you are not sure yet own strength, you can try to sew a draft from an old sheet, and at the same time determine the exact dimensions.

What do we need?

To sew, you should arm yourself with tailoring scissors, a needle and thread, as well as an iron and, of course, sewing machine. And of course, you will need a piece of fabric the right size.

The choice of material depends on the purpose of the cover. So, for an orthopedic mattress in a crib, brightly colored furniture fabric is suitable. Modern inflatable mattress can be covered with non-marking tarpaulin. The choice of material for a mattress in the bedroom is almost unlimited - whatever you consider suitable is suitable.

Which fabrics do you prefer?

For a mattress, materials such as calico, linen, and thick teak are usually used. There are also cotton and polyester options. widely accepted for use in children's and medical institutions, kindergartens and health camps.

In general, you need to buy fabrics that are easy to care for, because the covers have to be washed from time to time. For the same reason, you should not choose too light shades, although, of course, they look very elegant.

To avoid shrinkage of the product in length after washing when cutting, always place the long side of the product along the base.

If it is assumed that the mattress cover will be used alternately from the front and back sides, then during its manufacture you should choose a sewing seam. In this case, you also need to find a fabric where the back and front sides differ as little as possible from each other.

Let's get started

Before sewing a mattress cover, we very carefully measure the dimensions of the mattress itself, that is, the length, thickness and width of the future cover. We remember that the saying “Measure seven times...” is still relevant.

Then we divide the pattern into five parts. This is the main part, the length and width of which correspond to the dimensions of the mattress, and four auxiliary parts - in the head, in the legs and on both sides. These parts are cut based on its thickness. To make sure you don’t make a mistake with the dimensions, it’s worth drawing the layout of all the parts on a sheet of paper in a large square (taking into account the scale).

How to transfer a pattern to fabric?

Having made the necessary measurements, mark the contours of the parts on the prepared fabric, starting from the main part of the product. If the fabric has a pile, when cutting you need to take into account its direction. The pattern is traced on the fabric with tailor's or regular chalk.

If the dimensions of the existing cut allow, the side parts can be made one-piece in the form of hems.

When sewing the simplest bag cover, you can simply take the fabric, fold it in half lengthwise, and pin the edges together.

Mattress big size you will have to sew from separate parts. The same technique applies if the fabric is very dense. As an experiment, you can try inserts of contrasting colors, but taking into account the overall color range premises (to avoid diversity). In addition, it is advisable to combine fabrics of similar density and texture.

Measured seven times - it's time to cut

Armed with tailor's scissors (they must be sharp), carefully cut the fabric along the marked lines, not forgetting about the wide seam allowances along the edges. Their size depends on the width of the elastic, which must be effortlessly stretched along the contour of the cover. The hem allowance is folded in half and stitched along the edge.

The next step is to process all the parts according to the diagram below.

First, connect the side parts to the main ones and machine stitch all the corner seams. After this, process the resulting seams using an overlocker or manually.

Shutdown

Tuck the free edges of the fabric, marking a clear and neat fold line, and iron the seams properly. For greater reliability, all seams of the product should be duplicated, departing from the edge about 3 mm. Sew stitches along the edge of the fold line, leaving space for the elastic to be pulled through. Thread it through with a large pin and securely secure the edges. Ready!

Case with zipper

Another option is to make removable mattress covers with zippers, which are sewn along the contour between the main and auxiliary parts. As a rule, long enough zippers can be difficult to find.

Practice shows that you can quite successfully get by with a pair of one-piece zippers with large teeth about 85 cm long, sewn symmetrically (for example, at the head of the cover or along one of its long sides; being completely unfastened, they allow you to pull the cover onto the mattress and remove it without special effort).

Cover-sheet

Mattress covers with zippers, no matter how you look at them, still require a lot of work. For those who don’t want to bother with sewing in zippers or labor-intensive contour stitching, suitable option simpler. These are covers for mattresses with elastic, like a sheet, which are simply pulled over the mattress and can be easily removed for washing. These sheets are especially good for high (for example, orthopedic) mattresses.

Of course, you can buy ready-made sheets with elastic, but it’s not always possible to find the right size, because mattresses are sometimes non-standard.

If you buy chintz or calico to sew such a sheet, then the standard width of the fabric (usually 2 m 20 cm) may not be enough, especially if the mattress is wide and you will have to extend it from the sides.

Knitted sheet covers with elastic do not require ironing and always look neat, which is their big advantage. These sheets are also sold ready-made. This is very practical option Moreover, they look stylish and modern.

If you decide to sew knitted covers yourself, remember that knitwear requires careful processing of the edges, without which the loops may creep.

How to sew it?

In total, to sew a sheet cover with a thickness of about 15 cm, you will need about 3 meters of fabric, and do not forget about the elastic allowances along the edges, about 15 cm wide on each side.

If the mattress has rounded corners, then the sheet should be sewn in the same shape. Curves should be provided at the pattern stage. To avoid any size discrepancies, control measurements are carried out diagonally on both the mattress and the sheets - they must match.

The edges are processed or overlocked.

You will need about 5 meters of rubber bands. The exact length depends on its density. The stronger and stiffer the elastic, the longer it will last in the face of repeated washing.

How to sew a mattress cover for a baby?

In the same way you can build a sheet for what is this needed? You may have noticed that your child wakes up in the morning with crumpled sheets. Or you have to get up at night to straighten his bed.

The problem can be radically solved the easy way. To do this, we take the most ordinary elastic band, scissors, thread with a needle, chalk and the sheet itself. Of course, you can buy ready-made covers for children's mattresses, but often they do not fit in size or color.

Besides, any mother knows what a pleasure it is to make something for your baby. with my own hands. And among other things, a young mother often does not have enough time to go shopping in search of the necessary accessories. And you can do a little sewing while the baby is sleeping. For sewing, you will need a regular or electric machine with a zigzag stitch.

We sew a sheet easily and simply

At the first stage, we spread and carefully straighten the sheet on the mattress. Then we put an elastic band on top of it and determine the required length. Cut off the required amount.

Place the sheet with the wrong side up and draw a chalk outline for sewing on the elastic. We begin to attach it. We sew the first couple of centimeters with a regular seam, then we switch to a zigzag stitch.

To sew everything correctly, we constantly tighten the elastic during the sewing process. It is most convenient to direct it towards you with your left hand, maintaining the desired degree of tension, and with your right hand to hold the sewing under the machine foot and lay the attached elastic along the intended contour. If you can’t do this right away, you can pin it to the fabric with pins at several control points.

This way we sew the elastic on one side. Then we pull the sheet over the mattress and do the same with the other side. Ready! We made a mattress cover for the baby with our own hands! Now the sheet will not fidget, and the folds will no longer cause inconvenience to the baby.

If its area is large enough, it is best to attach the elastic along the very edge - in this case you will get a real case, which will completely fit children's mattress ik.

In the same way, you can sew a waterproof mattress cover from medical oilcloth for a baby crib, allowing you not to worry about frequent washing and drying of the mattress.

It is inconvenient to sleep on the sofa all the time: even structures equipped with a “French folding bed” mechanism are inferior in comfort to beds with an orthopedic mattress. If, in addition to organizing a comfortable sleep, you need somewhere to seat guests, you cannot do without a piece of furniture with a backrest that can accommodate several people. Then it’s worth making something like a sofa out of the bed - making a soft headboard (back), sewing removable covers from a suitable furniture fabric.

As you can see, both furniture products are in demand in everyday life; it is difficult to choose between them. It’s good if the size of the apartment allows you to add a sofa and bed, but what if not? In this case, you need to figure out how to sew a mattress for a sofa or make a soft backrest with a bed cover.

Fabric selection

The fabric should not only look stylish, but also be easy to wash. Quite often, even in fabric catalogs, only dry cleaning or dry cleaning is indicated as a method of cleaning textile material. However, as practice shows, this does not mean that washing is contraindicated.

To avoid sewing again, purchase a small piece of fabric you like and wash it in washing machine at a water temperature of 30°C (flocked fabric will not survive washing - it will peel off, don’t even try to use it).

Measure the cut before washing - further comparison will show whether shrinkage has occurred. Assess for discoloration, appearance or absence of lint. If the results of the experiments are positive, this piece of fabric will come in handy: you can use it to reupholster a chair or make a cover for sofa cushion.

  • Since furniture fabric is not cheap, sew the invisible part of the cover from calico.
  • Before cutting, the fabric should be washed, especially calico, which noticeably decreases in size. In addition, the calico must be ironed with steam.
  • To determine the required amount of material, lay out the patterns on a checkered sheet. Don't forget to reserve material for shrinkage when cutting.

Mattresses are different

Annoying misunderstandings happen even in the home of perfectionists, so the sofa and bed need protection from dirt. If you don’t want to do anything, buy a sheet with an elastic band of a suitable size. She can handle minor stains quite well, but any spilled liquid is too much for her. Clean sleeping area It’s quite problematic; changing it every time is too expensive.

What to do? It is best to sew a cover yourself - a purchased one may not fit in size and will sit on your mattress like a “new thing from someone else’s shoulder.” After all, mattresses differ in size and shape of corners (rounded and straight), and covers differ in the way they are sewn.

The ideal cover fits the mattress tightly, protects it as much as possible from dirt and is easy to wash.

Good decision is to protect a sofa or bed with an additional thin mattress about 5 cm thick. It is easy to make it yourself from foam rubber (cheaper option), polyurethane foam, artificial or natural latex (more expensive option). Such a mattress can be washed in the bathroom or simply made a new one. Why? The cost of replacing it is much less than purchasing an orthopedic mattress or reupholstering a sofa.

Making a thin foam mattress

A sheet of foam rubber (density not lower than 25) can be easily cut with a sharp knife. Most often, a construction knife with replaceable blades is used for this operation. This is done like this:

  1. The sheet of foam rubber is marked with a marker (felt-tip pen), and marks are placed.
  2. By using wooden plank all marks are connected by a straight line.
  3. Under the place of the future cut we place some unnecessary hard cloth (a scrap of board, a piece of thick cardboard, etc.).
  4. Taking the knife strictly vertically, make the cut with leisurely, precise, strong movements.
  5. We check the depth of the cut: we push the resulting hole apart with our fingers and cut the foam rubber to the bottom.

If there are a lot of burrs at the cut site, the tip of the blade (or the whole thing) should be replaced. Curvilinear cuts are made in the same way: a pattern is applied, markings are made on it, excess foam rubber is cut off with a vertically mounted knife, the resulting cut will not be ideal, but quite acceptable. If necessary, foam rubber can be easily glued together, the resulting seam will be strong and elastic.

Note! When heated, cyanogen-containing substances that are hazardous to health are released from foam rubber, which even in small doses affects the respiratory and nervous system. Therefore, hot cutting of this material at home is categorically unacceptable.

Cover for a thin mattress made of calico or satin

It is acceptable to use ready-made quilted fabric (the composition is more natural, containing cotton), used for making linings or sewing bedspreads. We begin work by taking dimensions: length, width and height. To avoid creating unnecessary seams, we take the fabric as a single piece. Remember that natural materials shrink noticeably; after washing, a piece 2 m long may shrink by 10 centimeters. Therefore, it is best to wash the fabric first.

Leave a 1.5 cm seam allowance. To cut the fabric evenly, we wrap the remainder over the main part and even out the edges. Holding it with your hand, slightly pull the fabric towards you with scissors and make a cut.

We fold the piece of fabric along the fold line, rounding the corners as on a mattress. We sew the cover around the perimeter using a sewing machine, using a zigzag or overlock to go around the edges.

On the shorter side we leave a hole for installing a zipper, a space at the edges of 20 to 30 cm. We iron the fabric in this place, and after preliminary basting we sew in a zipper using a machine.

There is almost no sliding of the fabric on the foam rubber, so carefully, without tugging, we pull the cover onto the mattress. We tighten the fabric, straighten the corners, then pick up the folds and tighten them again, after which we fasten the zipper.

Cover for a thin mattress made of upholstery fabric

To ensure that our fabric covering neatly covers the mattress on all sides, after marking the corners, we mark the auxiliary lines of the detailed pattern. Applying the pattern, we round the corners of the upper part, do the same with the corners of the lower part (hems) and draw a straight line at 45°, following through the intersection points of the lines indicating the height of the mattress.

Cover for orthopedic mattress made of furniture fabric

The side of the cover is essentially a long ribbon. If there is not enough fabric for it, sew it from several pieces. Make sure there are no seams on the visible front, or make the seams symmetrical.

2A+2B – no Exact size(the difference appears due to the presence of rounded corners), the side part will be longer, the excess is simply cut off. To calculate the length more strictly, you can measure the perimeter of the upper part.

We process the edges of the allowances with a zigzag (if the fabric frays), the seam allowances are folded onto the calico and stitched along the edge. It is sewn in front of the top, the sections are processed and stitched, just like the sides. Top part The cover is ready.

In this world, unfortunately, nothing is eternal. The same applies to mattresses, which over time begin to lose their original characteristics. They sag or bulge in some places. Sleeping on such mattresses is no longer very comfortable. So you decide to buy a new one.

What should those whose financial situation does not allow them to purchase another mattress do? Or for those who love original and unusual things? There is a way out - make a mattress with your own hands.

It is clear that you will not be able to build an orthopedic mattress on your own. But still, you will definitely be able to reconstruct the old one and make it more convenient.

Before you begin this peculiar procedure, you need to prepare. First, set aside free time for work. And secondly - stock up necessary material. You will need:

  • padding - your choice;
  • strong threads
  • sewing machine

If you are going to reconstruct a stationary mattress, then in addition to everything you need to prepare:

  • wooden slats,
  • springs,
  • arm yourself with big nails,
  • hammer,
  • and of course, a stapler.

First you need to decide on the padding, that is, what kind of material you want to use.

To do this, you need to know exactly how you will use your mattress in the future - whether it will be removable or stationary. As a rule, for removable models they use soft padding (foam rubber, synthetic padding), which allows them to be easily folded during operation.

Step-by-step process of working with a removable mattress

So, spread the foam rubber on work surface, and apply the markings you need. You can use two options: cut the foam rubber lengthwise into two parts or leave it as a whole piece, and also cut the foam rubber into 2-3 squares. This way, it will be easier to fold it, pack it and put it in a secluded place if you do not intend to use it constantly.

This option is very convenient as a spare, for example, for guests. For the procedure of cutting foam rubber, it is better for you to use the help of a friend who will help you stretch the material, and at that time you can carefully cut it according to the markings.

So, the foam rubber is prepared, all that remains is to correctly cut out the blank for the cover. Remember to allow allowance for the seams as well as the thickness of the padding itself. Take the correct measurement of the foam piece and allow a few centimeters on each side.

A good alternative is a removable cover, which can be easily removed for washing during use. To do this, you still need to leave 20 cm along the length of the pattern, which in the future will act as an overlap. You can sew Velcro tape or a zipper to the overlap area - at your discretion.

Let's start sewing the cover. The process must begin with cross sections. After this, sew the cover lengthwise, placing the corners in the middle. Unfold it with the seams in the middle and put it on the prepared foam rubber. If yours is not removable, sew the raw edge with a sewing machine or by hand.

If you prefer soft padding or synthetic padding, then first you need to sew a cover.

In this case, you need to carefully measure the size of the bed and add to this the thickness of the future mattress. Make the pattern according to your measurements, leaving seam allowances. Sew the seams using a sewing machine and the cover is ready.

Fill it up soft upholstery taking into account that it will soon begin to nail down and become thinner. To prevent it from getting into clumps, it is recommended to stitch the mattress in several places with strong thread, attaching dense pieces of fabric to both sides. Such mattresses are softer, and their service life is much shorter than their foam rubber counterparts.

How to reconstruct a stationary mattress with your own hands?

Now let’s consider the option of creating a stationary mattress with springs with your own hands. Let's assume that your old mattress worn out. Here and there, the springs are sticking out, the cover has already acquired an untidy appearance, and you have decided to make drastic changes - to reconstruct the mattress.

Here you can do two things - tighten the old springs with strong twine, replace some of them, change the padding and, if possible, the cover. But you can radically reconstruct your mattress, and ultimately, find a completely new product - one that you made yourself. Such things are most valuable!

To do this, prepare spring blocks, the number of which should correspond required size. Place them in a vertical position. Make sure that the outer level of the springs is level. Their bottom part you need to fasten it to 2-centimeter slats, the width and thickness of which are no more than 7 cm. Prepare nails and drive them into the end side of your sleeping pad at the level of all spring rows. Start tying the springs.

First of all, the transverse row. Then along the row and finally diagonally. Check the upper level of the springs again - it should be level! At this stage, lay the material prepared in advance on top. Almost any thick fabric will do. Place padding, such as padding polyester. AND, last layer– upholstery. It is better to fix it with a furniture stapler.

The mattress is ready!

That's all - your homemade mattress is ready! The best part is that you were able to do it yourself, spending a little time on the process, while saving a lot from a financial point of view. In addition, you sewed a mattress cover from a fabric whose colors you and your family like.

You no longer need to run around the shops looking for the color you need - this also has its advantages. And don’t despair if on the first try you didn’t manage to do everything the way you would like. Any business requires practice, and you have already passed the first stage. Now you can offer your help in reconstructing mattresses with your own hands to your loved ones, relatives and friends. Enjoy your holiday.

No matter how long I searched, I never found a master class on the Internet that would tell me in detail and step-by-step about making an orthopedic mattress with my own hands. Therefore, my husband and I decided to do everything at our own discretion, after consulting with several friends who sell either furniture or furniture fittings. The end result was very comfortable mattress. And, besides, much cheaper than in the store.

What you will need to make a mattress measuring 190x80 cm:

— Bonnell springs (size 182x76cm, height 11cm);

— foam rubber 30mm thick, density 28;
- pressed dense felt;
- batting;
- fabric for the mattress;
- roulette;
- marker;
- two-meter flat strip;
- segment knife;
- tailor's scissors;
- glue for foam rubber;
— 6 m of braid;
— zipper 1.3 m long.

Visit a store that sells furniture components (fabrics, sliding mechanisms and so on.). Purchase a mattress spring (bonnel) of the required size, foam rubber, pressed felt, batting, mattress fabric, braid and glue for foam rubber.

Note: Foam rubber is most likely sold in pre-made sheets of a certain size, so check which size is best. Felt, batting and mattress fabric are cut materials with a certain standard width. Calculate also required amount, taking into account not only the width and length of the mattress, but also its height.

We make an orthopedic mattress with our own hands

Step 1. Preparing parts

Arm yourself with tailor's scissors, a meter or tape measure, a two-meter long straight bar, a marker and a segment knife. Measure the required lengths, outline the contours of the parts with a marker and...

Cut the foam rubber with a segment knife using a long strip. Don’t forget to place old magazines or plywood under the foam rubber in the cutting areas so as not to scratch the floor or other “working” surface.

Cut fabric, batting and felt with tailor's scissors.

For a mattress measuring 190x80cm you will need cuts the following materials with these sizes.

Foam rubber 30 mm thick:
- two pieces 80x190cm;
- two pieces 12x80cm;
- two pieces 12x182cm.
Pressed felt:
- two pieces 76x182cm.
Batting:
- two pieces 195x85cm.
Mattress fabric:
- two pieces 195x85cm;
- two pieces 85x20cm;
- two pieces 195x20cm.

Step 2. Assembling and gluing the mattress parts

The inside of the mattress should look like the photo below.

So, place a piece of foam rubber (190x80cm) on the floor. Place a piece of pressed felt (182x76cm) on it. Center. Place the springs on the pressed felt.

Glue the short side parts of foam rubber (12x80cm). IN in this case foam glue was used. It is not recommended to glue foam rubber liquid nails or PVA, since after they dry, they form hard crust, unpleasant to the touch. In addition, PVA takes a very long time to dry!

You can place a small load on the part to be glued (several books on a long rail).

Once the short side pieces are dry, cover the box spring with the last piece of pressed felt.

Place foam rubber (190x80cm) on top. Glue the top edges of the short side pieces (12x80cm) to the top foam. Press down while drying with a weight.

Now you can glue the long side parts. To do this, insert them into place, between the upper and lower pieces of foam rubber (190x80cm).

Moving the foam rubber in the right places, apply glue to the side parts and the surfaces glued to them. Press a weight down on top of the mattress, and also place something on the short sides of the mattress to press the side edges of the pieces (182x12cm) to the pieces (80x12cm).

Note: If you purchase a special foam adhesive, it can make gluing long sections (like these) easier. in the following way. Take a non-bending piece of wire with a diameter of about 5 mm. Dip one end of it into a jar of glue and, sticking it in, pull it between the slightly open surfaces to be glued.

After the glue has completely dried, the mattress is ready for use. All that remains is to sew a cover for it.

Step 3. Sewing a mattress cover

First, sew the batting to great details cover

Attach the batting to one part (195x85cm) of the cover from the wrong side. Align the edges. Baste down the center.

Sew along the center of the piece along the marked line.

Sew the long edges of the parts (195x85cm) using an overcast stitch. The batting should not extend beyond the seam. If it comes out, trim off the excess with scissors. Later you will find it easier to sew on the side pieces and place the stitched edges into the tape.

Note: To prevent the batting from stretching when sewing, you can place sheets of unnecessary newspapers under it (you will tear them off later).

Make one more longitudinal seam (halfway between the long edge of the part and its central seam), securing the cover part and the batting more securely.

Sew the side edges of the large cover piece using an overcast stitch.

Sew the side parts of the cover with an overcast stitch.

Sew the four side pieces of the cover together along the short edges. You should end up with a long ribbon sewn into a ring. Make sure that the parts to be sewn are placed right sides together.

After these procedures the following set should be obtained.

Sew one side of the zipper to a piece of tape (85x20cm), which will be sewn to the short edge of the piece (195x85cm). The lock should extend beyond this piece by 22.5 cm in each direction.

By making a mattress with your own hands, we will receive certain benefits. The materials needed are definitely cheaper than a finished factory product, and there will actually be no additional costs. The only thing we have to lose is time, but it will come back a hundredfold. The experience gained will allow not only short time figure out how to make a mattress for a bed, but also, on occasion, conduct a master class for one of your friends or acquaintances.

We make our own orthopedic bed for sleeping without springs

Having decided to create an adult or children's mattress with their own hands, most often home craftsmen decide to make a springless version. Why? Blocks independent springs It’s not so easy to purchase, but equipping a mattress with a classic spring block will not add preventive properties to it.

The starting materials will be as follows:

  • Dense polyurethane foam for laying along the edge (a holding box, thanks to which a homemade mattress can keep its shape well).
  • The main filler for the middle of the mattress.
  • Thick fabric for making a cover.

The main filler will be polyurethane foam. The easiest way is to lay it in one piece. Alternate use along with coconut fiber polyurethane foam will improve the consumer properties of our bed. In this case, you can get a product with increased rigidity that is beneficial for the spine. It is permissible to design a mattress with different hardness by laying coconut coir on one side and polyurethane foam on the opposite side.

Another solution is to use struttofiber together with polyurethane foam. This dense material with vertical fibers guarantees high-quality support for the spine. You can place the struttofiber on both sides, filling the middle with polyurethane foam or alternating it with coconut slabs.

  • Here, to the materials, we will add a safe adhesive that does not emit toxins or strong odors. It will be needed for gluing different layers of filler.
  • Dense natural fabrics are traditionally chosen for the cover. Calico and natural flax have proven themselves well.
  • A children's mattress, just like an adult's one made for themselves, does not tolerate the use of synthetic fabrics or cheap fillers. Allergic rashes to synthetics are not that uncommon. But foam rubber and batting do not have orthopedic properties and anatomical effect.

Don't be fooled into making a mattress based on... spring blocks Bonnell type. How to make a mattress with your own hands can be explained to any person who more or less knows how to use a sewing machine. However, to create a high-quality orthopedic product without good experience assembling mattresses is almost impossible.

Measuring and laying

We have already figured out what mattresses are made of. Now, it’s time to decide on the tools that can help us create a decent bed for sleeping at home. The work will not proceed without a sewing machine, tape measure, convenient scissors, and a sharp knife.

Before the beginning production process You should measure the dimensions of the bed. This is where a tape measure comes in handy, as it will tell you the dimensions of the mattress we are creating. Then we begin to assemble the holding box (frame) from dense polyurethane foam with a thickness of 50-100 mm.

  • It is advisable that the mattress be at least 14-15 cm thick; with a shallower depth, the desired comfort will not be felt.
  • Achieve accurate measurements of the bed and mattress components, this will result in a durable, dense product. In addition, scrupulousness is needed to ensure that the sleeping bed is stable. Then the mattress will lie tightly on the bed without sliding to the sides.

After this, we begin laying the filler. If you were able to obtain a large piece of solid polyurethane foam of the required thickness, measure the free space in assembled frame, then cut out the desired section. A stationery or shoe knife and scissors will help you cut the filler evenly.

If the bed mattress consists of several layers, then the individual sheets are glued together. Otherwise, your product will not provide the required density. Under the weight of a person lying on the bed, the mattress will “walk”.

Be sure to make sure that the glue is harmless and does not have a persistent odor. Otherwise, all the work will go down the drain.

Lack of polyurethane foam of the required thickness is not a problem. You can glue individual thin sheets into a single structure, which will create a good mattress for both adults and children. However, do not go to the other extreme; do not try to fill the core of your product with scraps or small pieces of filler. An orthopedic mattress should be closer in structure to a monolith, rather than a cheap foam model.

The word behind the sewing machine

After making the padding and placing it in the holding box, you can sew the cover. The pattern should contain 2 pieces of fabric with extra for seams and sides. Usually the seams are allocated 3 cm on all sides. The cover should be thick enough to be put on with a certain effort, this will add strength and elasticity to the mattress. All seams are made inward.

To sew a high-quality durable case, use only thick threads and natural fabrics. Don’t skimp on your health and comfort; the absence of allergies and durability will be your reward. Very often, putting on a cover requires help, because it is extremely difficult for one person to pull the thick fabric evenly.

After this operation, the cover can be sewn up. However, if necessary, it is permissible to sew in one side of the zipper. Although this cover is planned to be permanent and not removable. But you should sew a removable one on it, equipped with zippers around the perimeter or on two adjacent sides. Then at any time this cover can be removed and washed.
