Do-it-yourself door upholstery with dermantine. Upholstery of a metal and entrance door, how to make it yourself How to cover the outside of an entrance door with your own hands

How do we nail the bolsters?

The roller is nailed to the door frame and serves as a stop for the door leaf.
With proper upholstery, the tightness of the door is taken into account. When closing, the roller should not create significant resistance, but there should be no free space left. Upholstery with rollers is a complex and time-consuming job that requires great experience. Installation of rollers is carried out only on wooden doors, since fastening is done with special nails that cannot be driven into the metal.
The design of metal doors initially assumes the presence of stops, seals and rebates that act as rollers. Installing a roller on a metal door is possible only if it was originally installed on the door. During the production process of metal door wooden blocks hammered into the frame for attaching wallpaper nails. With this design, upholstery with rollers is possible without additional modification.

When is it impossible to upholster the front door?

After removing the upholstery, you have to deal with unpleasant surprises. Unfortunately, door manufacturers, in the struggle to reduce the final cost of the product, resort to all sorts of tricks to save on the materials used in door production. Therefore, you should not be surprised if under the door trim you suddenly discover that the door is made not of a whole sheet of steel, but of strips of metal, between which they left a gap of a centimeter or instead of metal they used hardboard, that is, pressed paper.
Of course, such surprises will not please not only the owner of the door, but also the master who came to order, since they significantly complicate the work he is doing. Also, the inner sheet can be made of plywood. When using plywood instead of metal, the thickness of the plywood is critical. When using a thin sheet of plywood, there is simply nowhere to hammer the nails. In this case, the master has to resort to covering the door with leatherette.
Doors equipped with crossbar mechanisms may have non-removable handles for driving the crossbars. In such a situation, upholstery without dismantling and replacing the handles is impossible. Replacing handles increases the cost of work. And in some cases, it becomes impossible to carry out work at all.

Choosing a door is a responsible matter, because it must protect the room from strangers, have good soundproofing characteristics and not allow heat to pass through. These are the characteristics that a wooden or metal door, sheathed and insulated with special materials, has.

The cost of a sheathed product is an order of magnitude higher than the cost of a regular door leaf, so not everyone can afford it. To save money, you can sheathe the door yourself; fortunately, this method is quite simple and inexpensive. As an incentive prize, you receive a reliable insulated door that does not allow unnecessary noise to pass through.

Leatherette is most often used as a covering material due to its unpretentiousness.

Leatherette covering

Choosing leatherette is a simple matter, because there is a significant difference between domestic and foreign manufacturers no, except in their cost. When purchasing, you just have to decide between ready-made kits, including fasteners and foam rubber, and independent choice all the necessary details. When purchasing leatherette by the meter, keep in mind that for a wooden door you need to take a piece 15 cm wider than the door leaf, and for a metal door – 12 cm.

It is recommended to use foam rubber as insulation, the thickness of which should not exceed 1-2 cm. You can also try to insulate the door with isotone, which has indicators slightly higher than foam rubber can boast, but its cost is not low.

Note! Used as fastening elements special nails having a wide head.

The color of the head is selected to match the material chosen for the covering. Moment glue is used to attach leatherette to metal doors.

Kit necessary tools includes:

  • brush;
  • scissors;
  • construction stapler;
  • pliers;
  • hammer;
  • screwdriver

Wooden doors

Upholstering doors takes little time, so there should be no problems, especially if you strictly follow the action plan below.

  1. We remove the door from its hinges, and then unscrew the fittings. We lay the canvas freed from unnecessary parts on a flat surface.
  2. We remove the remnants of old upholstery material, if any.
  3. TO wooden canvas The lining material is attached using a stapler, although ordinary nails can also be used for fixation.
  4. It is necessary to cut off the leatherette taking into account an outlet of 15 cm in width.
  5. Fold the top edge under and secure, distributing the material evenly. Now we do the same with leatherette on the sides, but at the same time on both sides in order to gradually stretch the loose material.
  6. The lining insulation must be laid so that it protrudes slightly at the spare edge, which will allow you to make a small roll when folding the sheathing material. The resulting roller should protrude 5 cm beyond the doors. We fix it all with the selected fasteners.
  7. We make the same roller on the sides of the door leaf. In this case, it is necessary to monitor its thickness, which should be the same along the entire length of the upholstery material.
  8. When fixing the skin, make sure that there are no folds that arise from insufficient tension.

Now you can start decorating the appearance of the cladding. Using the selected braid and nails, we form a specific pattern that you choose yourself. Most often it is a rhombus or a square. Decorative tape is stretched from one corner to another and secured crosswise with nails to the sheathing material.

If the leatherette moves away from the door for one reason or another, it can be secured with a horizontally stretched braid. It is recommended to place fasteners at a distance of 10 cm.

Note! The bottom roller should be at a distance of 15-20 mm from the floor.

At the final stage, all that remains is to place all the fittings in their places. The door trim is finished - admire the result.

Metal

Sheathing material is attached to metal sheet using glue. Let's consider the procedure for carrying out this operation.

  1. Glue is applied along the edges of the door leaf, after which foam rubber is attached to it. The peeking edges of the material are carefully trimmed with scissors.
  2. Next, glue is applied to the end of the door in the upper part. It is recommended to carefully monitor any wrinkles and distortions that arise and correct them in time so that the result satisfies you.
  3. After the glue has dried, use a utility knife to remove excess material.
  4. Secure the handles and locks in place.

With these two methods you can update appearance any door and improve its characteristics, while the costs will be minimal. Using ready-made sheathing kits will save you valuable time, although they are a little more expensive. You can make an interesting miniature from pieces of material and attach it to the door.

Upholstering doors with dermantine (vinyl leather) with a backing of foam rubber, padding polyester or batting is a good old method of finishing entrance doors. The purpose of such a coating is noise insulation, thermal insulation, and giving the door an aesthetic appearance. Dermantine upholstery is the most cheap way insulation and door decoration from all possible options.

If the doors are decorated from the inside decorative panels, including solid wood and veneer, metal with an anti-vandal coating is most often left outside, since any expensive upholstery can be damaged by vandals.

Meanwhile, due to the lack of insulation from the outside, both heat-insulating and soundproofing characteristics doors.

It’s even worse if the front door is wooden. True, it retains heat and does not conduct sound, but it suffers from atmospheric influences and from the same vandals.

If the door is old and looks ugly, upholstery with dermantine is a great way to give it an elegant look. Moreover, it’s cheap, even if you don’t do it yourself. And it is very easy to care for such a coating; you can simply wipe it with a wet cloth.

The color of vinyl leather can be different, and the texture is not necessarily the standard smooth one.

How to upholster with dermantine with your own hands

For upholstery you will need a piece of dermantine, a piece of foam rubber or batting, and decorative nails. It is better to take plastic batting, but in principle any batting will do if you can level it across the canvas without lumps or unevenness. Tools include a hammer, scissors and a screwdriver to remove the fittings.

Upholstering doors with dermantine with your own hands is possible even while hanging, but it is still more convenient if the door is in a horizontal position. To do this, you need to remove it from its hinges and place it on a table or four stools. Unscrew all fittings.

How to properly cover a door with dermantine

1. Cut a blank from dermantine along the length and width of the canvas with a minimum allowance of ten centimeters on all sides, as well as three strips for rollers fourteen centimeters wide (for three sides of the canvas, excluding the one facing the loops).

Tip: if upholstery is being done wooden doors dermantine, which opens inward, then a roller is also made for the loop side. In this case, the workpiece is not cut so wide, the allowance for the loop side is the same as for the other sides. In this case, the rollers are nailed not to the door, but to the frame.

3. We insulate doors with dermantine. To do this, you need to spread a piece of foam rubber or batting on the canvas to the size of the canvas. Cover the top with dermantine with allowances, the largest allowance is on the side of the loops. Fold the edges so that the edge of the insulation is inside the fold of the dermantine. Nail it.

Video “How to cover a door with dermantine carriage tie»:

The edge of the panel should completely overlap the edges of the roller and the nails with which the roller is nailed. The upholstery starts from the lock, the nails are located ten centimeters from each other.

4. To make the door trim with dermantine (as in the photo) look beautiful, you need to nail the panel with decorative nails over the entire area. In this form it looks more beautiful, and the material will not move down, forming an untidy fold at the bottom of the canvas.

When calculating the number and location of central nails, you need to proceed from the aesthetic criterion, but if your filler is not sheet, then it is better to plant nails more often.

Tip: when covering the front door with dermantine, as an additional decorative element, you can use nylon thread, thin wire, fishing line. It is stretched between the nails along the perimeter, and in the center it can be pulled so as to form squares or diamonds.

5. Cut holes for the fittings and put them in place so that they overlap the cut edges.

6. Hang the door on its hinges.

7. Nail the allowance left on the loop side to the corresponding casing, first bending the edge.

Double door upholstered in the same way. There will be only one central roller; it should be placed on the sash where the handle is.

Upholstering doors with dermantine is also possible in the reverse order: first sheathe the canvas, and nail the rollers on top of it. But it is unlikely that the vestibule will benefit from such a sequence.

The “lazy” hanging dermantine door trim is no fundamentally different from the classic one. This method can be used if the door is too heavy and removing it requires energy. You won't win anything else: handles, eyes, locks will still have to be screwed together.

Video “Do-it-yourself door upholstery with dermantine”:

To completely remove drafts and improve the fit, it makes sense to do another simple procedure: buy a rubber self-adhesive seal and glue it around the perimeter of the box.

Some believe that door upholstery with dermantine is possible using not rubber, but polyethylene, which is placed on tape. But this, firstly, is completely ugly, and secondly, the polyethylene material is fragile and will tear very quickly.

  • For restoration of a product with leatherette or vinyl leather Only glue should be used. To do this, the edges of the structure are lubricated with adhesive and foam strips are attached to them. Excess parts can be cut off with a special knife. Then glue the end of the upper part of the door and glue the upholstery starting from the top. Be sure to smooth the fabric while working to avoid wrinkles.

  • To upholster iron door decorative panels First you need to measure it. Then, on the upper and lower parts of the structure, you need to make a mark along the attached block. Using a drill, 16 holes are made in the canvas for fastenings, the diameter of which should be identical to the diameter of the screws. The bars are fixed on the canvas, after which holes are drilled for attaching the decorative panel.

How to decorate the front door from the inside?

Door design from the side of the apartment it can be decorated differently. The best option is painting, for which you do not have to remove the canvas from its hinges. The surfaces adjacent to the product should be covered with newspapers so as not to get dirty during painting. All fittings are removed or sealed with tape. The surface of the door is first sanded and then treated with a protective impregnation, which will protect the wood from moisture. And after complete drying, the structure is coated with paint and varnish in 2-3 layers.

To decorate the veneer you will have to prepare an iron and a sheet of paper. Repairing the canvas begins with removing it from the hinges and taking measurements. Veneer strips are applied to the surface of the product so that the pattern matches. It is advisable to number each piece so that there is no confusion in the future.

It is better to glue the veneer from the top, gradually moving down. To do this, remove the protective paper from it and glue it to the canvas. To get rid of bubbles and folds that have arisen, place a sheet of paper on top of the veneer strips and iron them with an iron.

Moreover, you need to understand that not every material can be used to process the external or internal part of the structure.

To update a box located from the street with your own hands, you can use:

  • Steel sheets. Their structure can be smooth or embossed with an imitation of an interesting pattern. Nice sheets steel will protect the room from drafts entering the interior, but they must have a backing made of polymer or cork.
  • Viniplast. It may consist of fiberboard or PVC. This material is not resistant to sunlight, and therefore it must be coated with a special varnish with an ultraviolet filter.

  • Marine plywood looks like natural wood. After installation, it is covered with stain and frost-resistant varnish. If you need to replace old plywood, this process will not take much time and effort.
  • Leatherette is a material that is equally suitable for interior and exterior finishing. It is quite easy to install, and it also has different design. And its soft structure can hide sharp corners.
  • Fake diamond Available in thin panels that are fixed to the outside of the door using construction resin. The structure, lined with stone, looks very impressive.

To reconstruct the street side of the door, it is necessary to use insulation - isolon. The thickness of the isolon can be any - it all depends on personal preference. Staples, sealant or nails are suitable for fixing the insulation. After this, the canvas itself needs to be decorated.

How to decorate a door with your own hands?

You can veneer the door yourself different ways. Wallpapering is considered the most common. Any type of wallpaper, from paper to liquid, is suitable for this method. Before processing with this material, it is necessary to prepare the canvas: remove the paint, putty all the imperfections and sand it. You can cover the entire canvas or just the paneled part with a wallpaper sheet, cutting out parts of suitable size.

The decor can be fabric, which, due to its structure, will make the product unique. But it is necessary to choose the fabric, taking into account the degree of its shrinkage. You can use several fabric sheets of different designs. Patchwork technique quite popular among designers: you can cover the entire canvas or just the central part with fabric. The product can be covered with unusual nails, beautiful laces, and baguette frames.

An unusual finishing method is mirror acrylic. Using mirrors you can visually enlarge the space and improve lighting. Since it is not always possible to cut out the desired part from a mirror yourself, you can purchase finished panel with amalgam. The simplest option is shaped acrylic mirrors. They can be arranged into one whole and cover the entire canvas, or they can be placed in the center, leaving the rest of the space free.

Attach acrylic mirrors to a previously cleaned surface. You need to apply a primer to the back of the mirror sheet and to the door itself, and only then secure the panels using glue. You can resort to mounting suction cups, which will greatly speed up the process.

How to make cash for front doors yourself?

Cashing is a decorative element that completes the design of the entire building. Its purpose is to hide irregularities after installation. entrance structure. With its help, noise insulation is improved and thermal conductivity is reduced.

The cash box should be in the same style as the house, so when choosing it you need to take into account some rules:

  • it must be combined with the walls of the building;
  • her performance characteristics should be on top level so that despite atmospheric influences its appearance remains unchanged;
  • the dimensions of the platbands should be such as not to be lost against the rest of the background;
  • the internal cashing may be flat or round, and sometimes threaded.

For the space between the doors it is better to purchase wooden frames. But they can be replaced with plastic or metal elements. To prevent shrinkage of the structure, in wooden house install a pigtail. The oscillator can be made in four ways: in an embedded block, in a shim monolith, in a tenon with a ready-made slope, and in a log.

In order not to select the platbands yourself, you can buy ready set, consisting of canvas, box, cash, extensions, hinges and handles. This set will make your work much easier.

Dimensions

Regardless of the type of construction, doors have standard sizes, which were established by GOST:

  • The height of a standard opening varies from 2.07 m to 2.37 m. The exact parameters are set taking into account the height of the ceiling and the width of the door.
  • Width standard design equal to 90 cm, but this figure may vary depending on the individual parameters of the canvas.
  • But the thickness of the doorway can be anything - there are no standards set for it. The thickness of the box is selected taking into account other indicators.
  • The dimensions of the doorway do not always correspond to standards. In a cottage or private house they can be anything, but within 2 by 2.4 m. It is better not to widen the opening beyond these figures, otherwise it will be very difficult to choose the right door.

By showing your imagination and devoting a little free time, you can create a work of art. Many ideas for decorating an old door are striking in their originality:

  • For example, to create an atmosphere of bohemian celebration, you can use rivets and various beads, which very often lie idle in a box of small items.
  • Holes that form unusual patterns can decorate products.
  • Quite unusually, you can decorate the door frame with buckwheat. This process will take a lot of time, but it will allow you to decorate the room.
  • In addition to the door itself, you can decorate the space around it. For this you can use bows, artificial flowers, ribbons and laces.

  • Unusual sensations will be experienced by a structure decorated with wreaths, bouquets, glass inserts and other original things. From the entrance side, you can glue a large horseshoe or an improvised nest onto the canvas.
  • A door with painted butterflies, flowers, trees or clouds will look quite gentle. It is not necessary to draw out every detail; you can make the drawing in the form of an abstraction.
  • You can also draw patterns near the doorway that smoothly flow onto the canvas itself.
  • If on own ideas If you don’t have enough imagination, you can watch video lessons and choose a suitable master class.

When restoring an old door, it is important not only to think over its design, but also to update the insulation. Thus, you can get not only a beautiful, but also a warm product.

Decoration of the door and all entrance group directly depends on the taste and preferences of the owners. Door manufacturers offer their customers entire catalogs of the most various designs this element building structure. And for those who want to save a little, the option of doing the door trim yourself is suitable. suitable material. For example, artificial leather is very popular.

The word dermatin comes from the Greek “dermos” (skin) and means artificial material, replacing natural leather. This is a relatively cheap coating that allows you to quickly give the door an aesthetic appearance. People often call it “dermatin”, although this name must be written and pronounced without the letter “n” - dermatin. This will make it easier to find, select and order upholstery online.

What is upholstery for?

The facing material on the door plays an important role. It's not only great way mask old wood with a cracked surface, but also the ability to provide additional insulation from extraneous sounds and loss of room heat.

At the same time, upholstery is not a particularly difficult task - literally any owner who decides to tidy up the front door can handle the job. There is no need to involve professional builders or repairmen, which saves the family budget.

What do you need for work?

For the cladding to be successful, you need to stock up necessary materials and tools, and then simply follow a certain algorithm of work.

Need to purchase:

Artificial or natural leather. Leatherette will cost less, but it is visually and to the touch not much different from natural material. The main thing is to purchase a quality sample from a trusted manufacturer. Faux leather can be found at any hardware store. Here we offer materials for every taste: different thicknesses, colors and textures. Standard width canvases from 1.1 to 1.4 meters. And it is recommended to add 20-30 cm to the suitable cut length for the hem. Dimensions are determined by simply measuring the door.

In addition, upholstery is needed to make rollers - strips up to 15 cm wide and equal in length to the height of the door.

Material for sound insulation and insulation. The listed problems can be easily solved using felt or sheet foam rubber. Thick padding polyester, used by seamstresses to make winter clothes, is also suitable for work. The thickness of this layer is from 1 to 2.5 centimeters. You can lay the material in several layers.

Special nails with a decorative head. They can be metal or covered with a material that matches the color and texture. Quality products are made from copper alloy. The diameter of the head and the length of the nail depends on design solution. The type of base material and the volume of the selected pattern are taken into account. Ideally, nails are matched to the color of the lock and door handle.

Polymer glue is necessary to work with metal door. The well-known universal “Moment” or “88” is perfect for this purpose.

Insulation in strips with a diameter of 1, 1.5 or 2 millimeters. Foamed polyethylene or round foam rubber, sold by the meter, is suitable. Overlays are made from this material.

Tools you will need:

  • stapler and staples used to temporarily fix materials;
  • construction knife and scissors for working with insulation and upholstery;
  • a screwdriver or screwdriver with different attachments (useful for dismantling old coating);
  • small hammer;
  • nail puller and pliers for dismantling.

Preparatory stage

TO preparatory work includes dismantling the old coating.

First, the peephole, handles and locks are removed. Then, using a massive screwdriver and pliers, the old casing is dismantled. After which all old staples, screws or nails are removed from the door leaf.

The door is removed from its hinges, placed on a table or workbench and cleaned of all fragments of the old coating. In the same position, you can stuff new material. Fixed structures are put in order in a vertical position.

Working with a wooden door

For good quality Upholstery is done on both sides at once - from the inside of the room and from the outside. Most often wooden apartment doors open inward. This example will be considered.

Internal insulation requires the use of rollers. They are stuffed with strips of insulation and fastened in such a way as to cover the gaps between the door leaf and the frame.

Work order:

  1. The facing material and insulation, including strips, are cut. It is recommended to make allowances for the cladding along the entire perimeter of 1.2-1.5 centimeters. The trimmings are used to form insulation strips installed along the contour (perimeter). The insulation should be 1-2 mm less than the door leaf!
  2. Then rollers with a sealant are fixed around the perimeter using a stapler. It is recommended to start installation from the upper right corner, then secure the roller along the vertical cuts and the bottom. Bottom part should not cling to the threshold. This will lead to rapid wear of the upholstery.
  3. For a rim lock, a cut of the appropriate size is made in the roller.
  4. After that, the insulation is laid, in which holes are immediately made for the inspection eye and locks.
  5. At the next stage, leatherette is stuffed (its edges are folded up and placed under the insulation, and then fixed with brackets).
  6. With the help of nails you can make any decorative finishing. To do this, preliminary markings are made on leatherette in the form of a suitable pattern. Can be done decorative fastenings only along the perimeter in increments of 6-8 centimeters. The upholstery must be evenly stretched!

External insulation begins with markings. The door is closed, and a line of contact is drawn along its outer leaf with chalk. door frame– the lining must be filled up to this mark.

Work order:

  1. The insulation is indented 1 cm from the chalk line.
  2. The upholstery is placed on top (the edges are folded under the insulation layer, with the exception of the bottom - it remains free for now).
  3. Sealing rollers are attached to the box, except for the lower part. When finished, the roller should fit door leaf by 1.5-2 centimeters and do not cover the keyhole.
  4. The lower roller is attached directly to the door. It should not be too dense or large. The calculation is made in such a way that this element does not interfere normal functioning doors.
  5. Next, the upholstery is stretched and secured with nails. After which the peephole, handle and locks are installed.

Working with a metal door

Metal doors are usually installed as outward opening doors. This design fits very tightly to the box and does not require additional insulation in the form of rollers on the outside.

WITH outside insulation and leatherette are attached using polymer glue. The upholstery is folded 5-6 cm around metal shelves designs. The glue is applied in strips, and each layer of finish is pressed tightly against the surface. All excess leatherette around the perimeter is carefully cut off with a sharp knife - they will interfere with the closing of the door.

From the inside, the structure looks like a frame welded from corners and pipes. A metal sheet is attached to the frame. Here it is necessary to perform reliable insulation.

Work order:

  1. Wood slats are mounted to the profile using self-tapping screws.
  2. All cracks between the wood and the metal base are filled with polyurethane foam.
  3. Expanded polystyrene sheets of suitable thickness are mounted into the prepared frame. All cracks between them are also filled with polyurethane foam.
  4. Next, panels are prepared from plywood. Using glue, insulation and upholstery are attached to them (leatherette is folded on the wrong side and secured with staples).
  5. The finished cladding is mounted to wooden frame doors using decorative nails.

If desired, plywood can be replaced with any suitable facing material - clapboard natural wood or laminated fiberboard.
