Mercedes ml history. Mercedes Benz ML: technical specifications and photos

There are practically no complaints about the braking system. The calipers do not sour, the discs last a long time, the original pads have quite a decent service life. Unless they are afraid of overly aggressive driving and may catch fire when driving along a race track in a car with a powerful engine. Failures from the ABS/ESP system are mainly associated with either a failure of the steering wheel position sensor or corrosion of the hub combs, which can cause numerous system errors.

There are two types of suspensions: conventional spring and pneumatic. The “pneuma” has acquired the image of a particularly troublesome and unreliable thing, and also very expensive to repair. But now in practice the prices for parts are not so high. A pneumatic hose costs less than 15 thousand rubles to replace, but the cross-country ability of a machine with pneumatics is still noticeably higher. Although opinions differ regarding comfort: everything is not so obvious here.

Front pneumatic strut

55,802 rubles

The suspension design as a whole is quite reliable. With careful operation up to a hundred to one and a half thousand mileage, the main components, such as levers and shock absorbers, hold up very firmly. On cars with low-profile tires, the service life is shorter, even with purely urban use, but, nevertheless, higher than that of passenger cars under the same conditions. Many suspension components are replaceable, and they have learned to restore components such as the upper control arm at the front by cutting in a new ball joint. On cars with spring suspension, the springs at the rear are at risk; their lower coils often break off. And with pneumatics, the working conditions at the rear are just easier than at the front. The condition of the cylinders on the front axle is usually worse.

There is no need to demonize the air suspension. An assembled pneumatic strut from a good manufacturer costs about 24-33 thousand rubles, which is comparable to the price of a new shock absorber and spring, and the price of a pneumatic hose, even with replacement work, as I already wrote, is below 15 thousand rubles. Kits for minor repairs are even cheaper. In this case, the service life of the pneumatic hose is on average about 150 thousand kilometers, and even for lovers of off-road forays it does not fall below “hundreds”.

A very expensive system compressor will fail only if you do not pay attention to constant leaks in the system, a low battery due to its operation while parked, and similar signs. To extend the life of the compressor, you must remember to change the silica gel desiccant insert every two years.

Of course, pneumatics in general significantly increases the number of breakdowns. For example, the level control system also fails and has wear-out components, and electronics add to the hassle. To achieve the calculated service life, pneumatics must be washed regularly in the “upper position”. All these are also expenses and hassles, albeit minor ones. And there will always be a risk of breakdown in the most incredible situation. But don’t give up on cars with pneuma just because “the garages said”...

The service life of wheel bearings is below average; sometimes they last less than 50 thousand kilometers. The high weight of the car, low tire profile, long offset and heavy load on the hubs do their dirty work.

Radiator

22,985 rubles

Steering on the W164 turned out to be relatively troublesome. The main reasons for capriciousness lie in the use of wide tires, a weak system radiator and a weak power steering pump. After a mileage of 100 thousand or more, the pump no longer works at full capacity and often whines slightly. Leaks greatly reduce its service life, and they happen often due to overheating of the tubes. The very small area of the power steering “radiator” - the tube segment in front of the radiators - increases the operating temperature of the system too much, and hence the wear of all rubber elements. Replacing the power steering pump high pressure on cheaper ones with low pressure from passenger models leads to a slight weighting of the steering.

The rack itself is quite reliable, but if the pump howls, it introduces debris into the system, which usually leads to leaks in the seals of the rack itself. The same debris often clogs the filter in the pump reservoir, which gradually worsens the operating conditions of the pump even more and contributes to the rapid wear of this unit.

Transmission

Theoretically, there are rear-wheel drive versions of the W164, these were sold in the USA, but they cannot be found in Russia. So every car needs all-wheel drive.

The Mercedes ML transmission is completely classic, with a transfer case and center differential. Options included locking front and rear differentials, as well as a two-stage transfer case with reduction gear. However, most cars still do not have these options, and the “self-block” at the rear is most often a sign of installing some kind of tuning on cars with powerful engines. In principle, the classic design is very, very reliable. But we should not forget that nothing is eternal.

Even on low-power cars with a 3.5 liter gasoline engine, the front driveshaft will require replacement of the joint at mileage of about 120-150 thousand kilometers. The rear one, with at least the same mileage, will require checking the crosspieces and intermediate support, but there is a direct dependence on the driving style. Traveling through mud, of course, greatly reduces the resource, but regular washing and careful handling of the gas pedal can allow you to step beyond this threshold.

Failure of gearboxes is not such a rare occurrence. The front one suffers more often: its bearing can turn due to overheating in the summer, when the bearing fit in the housing is weakened.

In the photo: Mercedes-Benz ML 500 (W164) "2008–11

The transfer case also does not last forever; with mileages of more than 200 thousand, the unit requires at least careful diagnostics. When inspecting the car, be sure to hang it on a lift and spin the wheels with the engine at idle speed. And don’t forget to apply a load to the brakes and listen to the transmission under load and when reversing. At the same time, you can visually assess the condition of the unit supports.

The gearbox on the W164 is a non-alternative “automatic” of the 722.9 series in the 7G-tronic or 7G-tronic plus versions. The restyled version of the box has a different selector, a design optimized for working with start-stop systems and, in general, significantly fewer electrical problems. But mechanically and compositionally, this is still the same automatic transmission.

The design of the seven-speed gearbox, which gradually began to displace the reliable and familiar 722.6 five-speed gearbox from all models in 2005, received all the main boxed “new items”. Firstly, “mechatronics” is used here - a unit that combines the electronic and electro-hydraulic parts of the box; secondly, the operating temperature of the box has been significantly raised, and when moving slowly, you can see oil temperatures of more than 130 degrees. The gas turbine engine operates with even more stringent locking modes and is mainly used as a wet clutch. And, of course, the box is lightweight in every possible way, it has a magnesium body, a very light “bell” and a lightweight mechanical part.

Not without subtle electronic settings and a rich set of adaptations, which increases the possibilities of electronic diagnostics to almost limitless. All automatic transmissions for knowledgeable person Like an open book, the vast majority of faults are perfectly read by the scanner. Well, you probably know that as a result of choosing the original kinematic scheme, the box has two reverse gears. But this is a sign of all multi-stage automatic transmissions of the latest generations.

Unfortunately, the gearbox is the weakest component of the car. In terms of the number of critical failures and warranty repairs, it far exceeds even the not-so-successful gasoline engines of the first years of production. And when buying a Mercedes ML in this body, it is this that you should pay the closest attention to.

Why did this happen? W164 was one of the first cars to try on this box. In addition, an SUV has, on average, a higher transmission load, even compared to large sedans. Excessive lightening of the box gave rise to such an anecdotal malfunction as cracks in the “bell” - the interface element between the box body and the engine. The combination of technologies from different generations of transmissions in one design led to the presence in the design of an automatic transmission ISM servo drive unit, which is not the most reliable part.

The steering column module on cars after restyling also turned out to be not the strongest part and at first often failed. But the bulk of the problems are related specifically to the thermal regime of the automatic transmission and the ensuing consequences in the form of harsh operating conditions for mechanics and electronics.

I’ll say right away that the normal operation of the box with the heat exchanger in the main radiator in European versions occurs with a serious excess of the optimal temperature parameters of the transmission fluid. If the temperature rises above 130-140 degrees, then wear processes accelerate sharply. A small remote radiator on cars with diesel engines and gasoline V8 M273 almost does not save the situation. But installing a larger one from cars with an AMG M156 engine can already significantly improve it.

The hardest time for units is in traffic jams, where automatic transmissions (as well as engines) work. Here we can recommend installing a large remote radiator in the flow of the main engine fan. And if you also take measures to reduce the operating temperature for a gasoline engine, then transmission failures will become less common.

Already with runs of up to one hundred thousand kilometers, this box can usually “please” with wear and tear on the mechanical part. The blocking linings of the gas turbine engine may already be significantly worn out and contaminate the oil with an adhesive layer, and the oil pump, cover and separator plate with seals require urgent replacement. The clutch packs K1 and K2 also burn out; perhaps the needle bearing in the K2 pack dies due to overheating of the separator. And if the pressure drop due to wear of the oil pump and contamination of the valve body progresses, then they can burn out completely. Often cars that come to the service “just to change the control board” are sent to a complete automatic transmission overhaul due to visible serious contamination and a drop in pressure. True, there are also plenty of cases of banal “scam” for expensive repairs or outright forgery.

The most common problem with this automatic transmission is the failure of the ECM - the mechatronics brain. The electronic control board combines the main control unit, wiring to the sensors, the sensors themselves and the solenoid valve housings. Siemens-VDO clearly did not count on such a temperature regime, and constant failures, primarily chipping of the wiring and failures of the input and output shaft rotation speed sensors, became regular. Cars before restyling often visited three to five times. warranty repairs to replace these boards.

Problems also occur on 7G-tronic Plus boxes, albeit noticeably less frequently. Replacing the board is complicated by the fact that it requires binding with a dealer scanner and firmware via the Internet. Although now there is alternative software that allows you to bypass this complexity. When repairing an original part, which has recently been widely practiced, no bindings are needed. Is it worth resetting the adaptations?

In the photo: Mercedes-Benz ML 500 (W164) "2005–08

Add to the number of problems oil leakage due to warping of the lower housing cover and high temperature at the gas turbine seal and the absence of an oil dipstick - and we get a lot more trouble due to loss of fluid level. The low service life of solenoids further increases costs; they are extremely expensive.

I think it’s now clear why repairs that involve replacing all parts with new ones are often extremely costly. Here, if you wish, you can get 200-400 thousand rubles worth of spare parts alone. The “masters” proudly talk about the expenses they defrauded the owners of the car. Listen and you will understand what not to do.

Now the average price for repairs 722.9 is approximately 150 thousand rubles. You will be “persuaded” for this amount, even if your ECM fails, which can be repaired. And in fact, it costs about 10 thousand for the work and another 8 thousand maximum for oil for the box. If your first planetary gear is dead, the clutches and steel discs need replacing, the gas turbine engine requires replacing the linings and half of the solenoids have failed, you risk getting washed used units or your own ones disguised as new ones.

And a little about service. Mercedes automatic transmissions are one of the few that require only “their” oil. And what newer generation boxes, the more important it is. Oils from the approval list 236.14 are poured into a pre-restyling automatic transmission, for example, Mobil ATF 134 or Fuchs TITAN ATF 4134, and into boxes after restyling, with oval recesses on the pan, oil is poured from the approval list 236.15. True, the V8 diesel engine uses “old” oil, and the gearbox works well with it.

To fully refill an automatic transmission you need from 7 to 10 liters of oil, all indications of a larger volume are only for losses during replacement by displacement, in practice these are unnecessary losses. It is better to simply change the oil at least once every 20-30 thousand kilometers, rather than once every 60, or not change it at all. And remember, a serviceable gearbox of this series works extremely smoothly, and self-adaptation takes place in a couple of trips, so jerks and impacts are not a consequence of the battery running out or something else “not happening.” Unfortunately, this is how the malfunction manifests itself. And it’s better to fix it right away; any neglected problem in this design means extra tens and hundreds of thousands for spare parts.

In the photo: Mercedes-Benz ML 420 CDI (W164) "2005–08

Don't be shy about modifications. With a stock cooling system, by the time a mileage reaches a hundred thousand in the city, the automatic transmission is usually already dead or repaired. Moreover, sometimes it is not repaired particularly well. But with good radiator and by controlling the ATP temperature at the level of 80-90 degrees, it will not even require replacing the gas turbine linings, and the number of electronic failures is reduced by an order of magnitude. Moreover, even if the “first bell” rang, external filter and a radiator very often save the situation for a long time.

Motors

Like the automatic transmission, many of the ML's engines bring to mind the saying "the rich also cry." On cars before restyling you can find one really excellent engine of the M113 series; this was installed on the ML500 until the spring of 2007. It, of course, also has drawbacks, besides, its silumin liners are sensitive to dirty oil, dirty air, poor lubrication and overheating, but such machines have the greatest chance of going 300-400 thousand kilometers without major repairs. Of course, the design with three valves and two spark plugs per cylinder looks strange, and the power is 306 hp. for five liters of working volume it’s far from good, but it’s a really good option with good dynamics and fuel consumption.

Three-liter diesel engines of the OM642 series are, in general, also reliable. But, as with any diesel engine, there are a million nuances associated with it and an increased chance of getting repaired. The list of problems with this excellent engine is not limited to souring injectors and scale in the exhaust manifolds. A complex system boost, a capricious EGR valve, heat exchanger leaks with antifreeze getting into the oil and into the intake, a capricious crankcase ventilation system with a slowly and surely spreading membrane and squeezed out oil seals - it’s all the same. Let’s also add to this the short service life of piezo injectors on the first production cars in urban use, an intake manifold clogged with carbon deposits and broken dampers.

In the photo: Under the hood of the Mercedes-Benz GL 320 CDI (X164) "2006–09 OM642

Turbines with variable geometry on all powerful engine variants are also not a gift; if the exhaust temperature is exceeded or combustion is poor, they become clogged with soot and the servo drive fails.

A particulate filter on the W164 is required for any diesel engine. In addition, remember that any problem with the injectors will most likely lead to the appearance of cracks on the pistons, and in advanced cases and when refueling with sulfur diesel fuel, the cylinder head will fall into the risk zone.

In the photo: Under the hood of the Mercedes-Benz ML 320 BlueTec (W164) "2008–11

Illiterate tuning that exceeds the optimal EGT often kills both pistons and valves. Scuffing and wear of the piston group of the engine occurs at mileages of up to 200-300 thousand kilometers. In general, despite all the “reliability”, a diesel engine with a solid mileage is still a much riskier option. Savings on fuel can end immediately after the first breakdown.

In the case of the ML, the diesel is also good because its variants fall into the “up to 250 hp” niche. This allows you to save at least 25 thousand rubles a year on taxes, but now this is not the case at all large sum, especially when servicing Mercedes.

The four-liter diesel V8 of the OM629 series is not as demonic as its predecessor OM628, but it is not particularly popular. One of the advantages is that we note very quiet operation at low load. But in other respects, the three-liter OM642 are no worse, but they have fewer injectors, they are simpler in design and a little, but lighter.

I won’t dwell on the shortcomings of gasoline engines of the M272-M273 series, which collectively are the most common for the ML W164. There are people who want to know. Moreover, in this generation of the M-class, these engines are in the very first versions, which means they suffer from the largest number of problems. So they were not spared from scuffing the piston group and short timing life.

On cars after restyling, there are significantly fewer problems; with very careful maintenance, engines can run more than 300 thousand kilometers without any problems without wearing out the piston group, but the chances are low. It is worth buying a car with these engines only with endoscopy; it is advisable to buy one with a well-lined cast iron block and with modifications to reduce the operating temperature of the engine.

Of course, you will have to keep the radiators clean and frequent oil change intervals. But in any case, these engines are still a lottery. Often they end up being cheaper than diesel ones, but no one can give any guarantees, and a lot depends on your temperament.

The power unit on the AMG ML63 versions is the M156, and perhaps all you need to know about it is that Mercedes in the USA was twice invited to court to settle class action lawsuits regarding the quality of these engines. But with quality care and the availability of funds for your favorite toy, this is an interesting option. The motor has little in common with conventional M273s, but there are some global “jambs” here too.

In the photo: Under the hood of the Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG (W164) "2006–08 M156

Miscalculations in the material of camshafts and pushers and scuffing of the piston group also occur in selectively assembled sports engines. And the limitation on the “thermal package” puts an end to attempts to obtain maximum performance in urban conditions in the summer. However, there are many solutions to any problem. As I already said, if funds are available, this can all be solved.

Summary

A car in this body has prestige, beauty and comfort. And the costs... Well, any car in this body will be expensive. Even if it doesn’t break down particularly, you will fall into a “downward trend” in breakdowns and get away with small things. Of course, it’s best to take a well-maintained ML500 with an M113, but where can you get enough of them all? It is more profitable and cheaper to take power units with a guaranteed service life, but even major repairs against the backdrop of other “small” costs ultimately only result in wasted time and searches for a contractor. A spring suspension, of course, requires less money, but also produces less. And simpler interior equipment and fewer options reduce the number of failures, but you seemed to want a luxury car, not a Solaris with all-wheel drive?

In the photo: Mercedes-Benz ML 320 BlueTec (W164) "2008–11

If you don’t expect to spend less than 200 thousand rubles a year on maintaining the car, then give up, this car is too tough for you. You will either work for her or put up with troubles. If you have the money, the less popular GL is richer equipped, but... often cheaper on the secondary market. True, it will have worse cross-country ability, slightly higher consumption, worse dynamics, but it is essentially a very similar car. It’s just that he won’t have more democratic options for execution, which are all the same special meaning do not have operation at such a price. And I’ll tell you a secret that if you need a car for more than one year, and you are choosing among relatively new cars, then it will be cheaper to take a newer W166. In any case, calculations on operating costs clearly indicate that it is better to pay 800 thousand more than to invest it in operation over the course of a couple of years.

Want a used ML?

In the summer of 2011, Mercedes-Benz officially presented the 3rd generation ML-Class SUV in the W166 body, the world premiere of which took place at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September.

The car is built on the modernized M-Class platform of the previous generation, and with the same wheelbase of 2,915 mm, it is 24 mm longer (4,804 mm), 16 mm wider (1,926) and 19 mm lower (1,796) .

Options and prices Mercedes-Benz ML-Class 2015

The appearance of the new Mercedes-Benz ML-Class W166 is evolutionary in nature - the car received a massive front bumper, an enlarged radiator grille and optics with smoother outlines.

Relief stampings appeared on the sidewalls of the new Mercedes ML 2013, and new rear lights of a different shape became larger. For the new product, wheels with an updated design are offered, available in diameters from 17 to 21 inches.

The interior of the Mercedes ML-Class 2013 has changed more noticeably. Along with improved finishing materials, the design of the front panel has also changed, in which a style inspired by the flagship sedan is felt.

The middle part of the panel is made of wood, center console has become wider and sports aluminum inserts. The proprietary COMAND control system has also been updated, and customers can optionally order a panoramic sunroof.

At first, the new Mercedes ML W166 was offered with three engines. The most modest of them is the 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel on the ML 250 Bluetec version with 204 hp. (500 Nm).

The more powerful version of the ML 350 Bluetec SUV is equipped with a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine producing 258 hp. (619 Nm), accelerating the car from zero to hundreds in 7.5 seconds and providing maximum speed at 224 km/h.

The ML 350 BlueEfficiency modification is equipped with a 306-horsepower petrol six, producing 370 Nm of maximum torque and allowing it to reach a speed of 235 km/h. At the top of the range is the ML 500 with a 4.7-liter V8 producing 408 hp. With it, the SUV starts from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 250 km/h.

Regardless of the engine type chosen, they are all paired with a seven-speed 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission and have the proprietary 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.

Of course, Mercedes-Benz paid great attention to safety, so the 2013 ML-Class is equipped with many various systems, including Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection, Driver Fatigue Detection, Blind Spot Assist, Hazardous Braking Assist, and many others.

In turn, the comfort of the driver and passengers is taken care of by the suspension, which dampens all unwanted vibrations, and the Airmatic air suspension, which has six various options work, depending on the type of road surface.

Russian prices for the new Mercedes ML-Class 2015 start from 3,550,000 rubles for the basic version with a 3.0-liter diesel engine 249 hp, and for the top-end version ML 500, dealers ask for a minimum of 4,650,000 rubles. We also receive a “charged” one with a 525-horsepower 5.5-liter engine, which will cost RUB 6,500,000.

In the summer of 2014, the initial version of the ML 250 BlueTEC reached dealers, for which they are asking from 3,450,000 rubles.

While Mercedes-Benz will always remain the quintessential German automaker, its M-Class SUV is American at heart. Built in Alabama and aimed at the American market, the ML was one of the first luxury crossovers. Its considerable size and power-hungry engines are much more comfortable in the USA than in its homeland in Germany.

Continuous improvement

Regardless of origin, each generation of Mercedes-Benz ML cars has become better than the previous one. This is especially true for the second generation (2006-2011), which replaced the original model, which was produced for 8 years, and was characterized by insufficient reliability and mediocre build quality. Therefore, users strongly recommend that buyers of used M-Class cars consider offers from the 2006 model year. The third generation (2012-2015) represents a significant evolution of the previous one and has even more power and advanced functionality. And in 2016, following new scheme names of Mercedes-Benz SUVs, the M-Class was renamed the GLE class.

While it's the clear choice for a midsize luxury SUV, there are plenty of worthy, less expensive competitors in the premium segment. Before choosing this German-American, users are advised to consider all offers.

Third generation

The latest Mercedes-Benz ML line (chassis 166) debuted in 2012 and remained in production until 2015. The exterior design of the M-Class has achieved a balance between the traditional features of this model range and the design of other cars from the manufacturer. The series has proven itself well thanks to its consistently high build quality and the all-encompassing sense of reliability it instills. Other key strengths of the class include a diverse range of engines, comfortable seats and excellent brakes. However, having only 5 seats is less family-friendly than some competitors that offer third-row seating.

Initially, the third generation of the M-Class was represented by 4 models: the ML350 with a V6 engine, the diesel ML350 Bluetec, the V8-equipped ML550 and the hot rod Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG. All came with a 7-speed automatic transmission and (initially) 4Matic all-wheel drive. In 2013, a rear-wheel drive version of the ML350 was added.

The Mercedes-Benz ML 350 models had a 3.5-liter gasoline 302-horsepower 370 Nm V6 engine, and the ML350 Bluetec had a 3-liter turbodiesel V8 with 240 horsepower. With. and 617 N∙m torque. The ML550 was equipped with a 402 hp, 600 Nm twin-turbo V8, while the ML63 AMG featured a 5.5-liter twin-turbo 700 Nm V8 with 518 hp. s., which could be upgraded to 550 hp. With. and 759 N∙m by purchasing an additional package. The AMG model is further enhanced by active roll stabilization, sports suspension and steering tuning, 20-inch wheels, stronger brakes and special interior trim.

Restyling 2015

In 2015, 2 engines (and model names) were changed. The diesel version was replaced by a 2.1-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 200 hp. With. and torque 500 N∙m. This model is called ML250 Bluetec. The ML550 was replaced by the ML400, which had a turbocharged 3.0L V6 producing 329 horsepower. With. and torque 480 N∙m. The ML350 and ML63 AMG retained their engines, but all 4 engines received an economical auto-stop feature.

Aside from the powertrain change, changes have been modest, with improved electronics for 2013, new safety features, massaging front seats and an off-road package. For 2014, the ML350 can be had with the same Mercedes-Benz ML AMG styling features as the ML550.

Equipment

All third-generation M-Class models are equipped with standard features such as a sunroof, a power liftgate, heated power front seats, the latest COMAND electronics interface, Bluetooth and an emergency communications system. Additional options include a panoramic sunroof, keyless ignition and entry, and on later versions, "multi-contour" front seats with massage functions. The Off-Road package for 2013 includes an adaptive air suspension that improves both handling and ride, as well as a two-speed transfer case, six-mode terrain selector and underbody protection.

Users were impressed by the Mercedes-Benz ML's high performance and strong brakes. Cornering is confident enough, but the electric steering requires too little effort and lacks subtlety. feedback, which drivers have come to expect from cars of the German company. Interior quality is, as expected, excellent, although the more rounded dashboard design looks more reminiscent of the Jeep Grand Cherokee than other Mercedes-Benz models.

Second generation

Produced from 2006 to 2011. Although similar in appearance to the current model, this variant featured a different engine choice, hydraulic rather than electric steering, lower interior quality, and less user-friendly electronics than contemporary competitors.

The second generation of M-class cars was offered in only 2 versions. The ML350 came with a 3.5-liter 268-horsepower V6 engine, while the ML500 was equipped with a 5-liter V8 producing 302 horsepower. With. Both models were equipped identically.

In 2007, 2 more options were added to the line. Mercedes-Benz ML 320 CDI was relatively economical diesel engine(215 hp, 540 Nm torque), which was not approved for emissions in California, and the performance-oriented ML63 AMG was equipped with a 6.2-liter V8 producing 503 hp. With. It also featured a number of other handling and efficiency improvements.

Restyling 2008

In 2008, the ML500 was replaced by the ML550. The model boasted a more environmentally friendly 5.5-liter V8 with 382 hp. With. The following year, the renamed Mercedes-Benz ML 320 Bluetec, approved in 50 states, appeared, as well as the basic rear-wheel drive modification ML350. Each ML has received a front and rear facelift and an updated COMAND interface with Bluetooth phone connectivity.

In 2010 diesel model became the ML350 Bluetec and got more torque, but Top news was to add the ML450 hybrid. Featuring a gas-electric hybrid system developed jointly with BMW and General Motors, this ML features a 3.5-liter V6, two electric motors and an advanced transmission for a total output of 335 horsepower. With. Fuel consumption reached 13 liters per 100 km, which is good, but the cheaper Bluetec managed to reduce this parameter to 13.5 liters per 100 km.

Rebuilding trust

According to reviews, the second generation Mercedes-Benz ML brought back the feeling of unshakable reliability that one would expect from the legendary manufacturer. With the optional air suspension, the ride quality is impressively soft. Plenty of driver space is combined with excellent support from premium multi-contour seats and premium interior trim. The lineup's main drawbacks include fussy electronic controls, lazy acceleration from the V6 engine, and running costs that are higher than some other luxury SUVs.

First generation

The original Mercedes M-Class (W163) debuted in 1998 with the release of the ML320 model, which was equipped with a 3.2-liter 215-horsepower V6 engine. In 1999, more standard equipment was added and a more powerful and luxurious ML430 was introduced, equipped with a V8 powertrain. Improvements for 2000 included interior updates and the ability to install a third row of seats on all M-Class variants. And since 2001, the TeleAid emergency call system has become standard.

From 2000 to 2003, Mercedes-Benz pioneered the high-performance luxury SUV market with the ML55 AMG. Sold in limited quantities, the expensive ML had a 5.4-liter 342-horsepower V8 with 510 Nm of torque and a sports suspension.

Bad start

Early Mercedes-Benz ML models suffered from extensive quality control problems that often resulted in hefty repair bills, so users are advised against buying used cars from this period.

The M-Class was redesigned and improved in 2002, when more than 1,100 parts were modified and the ML430 was replaced by the ML500. The model with the W164 chassis featured a 5-liter V8 engine producing 288 hp. With. Characteristic features were new bumpers, transparent headlights and modified mirrors. At the end of 2003, the ML350 replaced the ML320, equipped with a larger 3.5-liter 232-horsepower V6 engine.

The updated Mercedes ML is already waiting for Russian drivers. What kind of fruit this is, we decided to find out with the help of owner reviews, photos and a test drive, which reveals the driving characteristics of the car. Before moving on to the “core”, you need to devote a couple of lines to history. After all, the car is not particularly popular in our countries. Most likely, you can guess why this is so. Price. Not everyone can pay 3 million for a car. But more on that later.

The Mercedes M-Class, developed primarily for the North American automobile market, was introduced back in 1997. A year later, the car received an award in the North American Truck of the Year category. A funny story: on the basis of this model in 2002, a special “Popemobile” was created for public trips of the Pope, which, however, is difficult to recognize after being altered for divine needs. The second generation appeared in 2005 at the Detroit Auto Show. Then sales of the model reached incredible heights, and thereby pushed the company to develop a new model. The third generation was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011.

Car interior and exterior

As you can see in the photo, the Mercedes company has preserved the originality of the ML model and added several successful innovations, which you can read about in the “Interior and Exterior” section.

At the moment, the third generation is the last, but a fourth is expected. The third generation of ML cannot be called innovative. For example, the wheelbase remains exactly the same as its predecessor. What has undergone significant changes is the appearance of the crossover, you can judge this from the photo. The car became fit and “muscular”; the body lines added elegance to such a massive crossover. The new image did not force the designers to abandon the planned elements that will accompany the model: shortened overhangs, original rear pillars and a large wheelbase.

As for the changes, we can now enjoy updated running lights, which are now located in the chrome elements of the car, a new radiator grille, which has increased in size and has become black. As in previous M-class models, the ML 350 has a roof that slopes back and ends with a spoiler - this is the highlight of this model range, and a successful one at that. The taillights slid even further onto the fenders and also increased in size.

Gorgeous rear view: as you can see in the photo, it is difficult to confuse any crossover with the ML 350 - the car turned out to be original. Another plus is the shape of the body and rear window. It is thanks to these thin body lines that the ML 350 stands out among other urban crossovers. In addition, the car performs well off-road, as for a city car, of course.

The elegant look of the updated M-Class SUV is repeated in the interior, which is decorated in top level. The steering wheel and seats are upholstered in expensive leather, there are real wood inserts on the doors and front panel, and the lighting lamps, which are located directly in the rearview mirror, provide comfort in the cabin with a pleasant soft light. The main dashboard is almost no different from the previous model in the ML 350. But there are still changes in it - it looks more collected due to the appearance of a new joystick, designed to replace a large number of buttons. Obviously, such a car simply cannot exist without an on-board electronics display, climate control, and radio. Moreover, all of the above is present in the basic version of the crossover.

The deflectors of the ventilation system began to look different: now they are more suitable for the general style of the ML 350 - the oval shape has changed to rectangular. On the contrary, there are more buttons on the steering wheel. On the central tunnel you can only find buttons for switching off-road driving modes, a multimedia system controller and active suspension buttons. Again, a standard set for a luxury car. In terms of roominess, the rear can accommodate three people in great comfort. But two people will still be more comfortable there. Especially if you lower the back of the chairs and put soft drinks in the holders. By the way, there are plenty of holders and various niches in the Mercedes ML 350. As for sound insulation, it is at the highest level, which is confirmed by reviews from the owners. When driving at high speed, passengers and the driver can even talk in a whisper, the cabin is so quiet. There is less vibration from the motor due to active hydraulic mounts. Also a big plus.

Now we come to the luggage compartment - an equally important issue. The luggage compartment volume is 690 liters. Of course, this is not a record for cars in this segment, but the trunk allows the driver to fit all the useful things on the road into the car. If desired, you can fold the rear seats and thereby free up additional space. It would be funny to see how someone would transport a huge wardrobe in such a car.

Specifications

But the most interesting thing is hidden inside the car. Or to be more precise, under the hood. If the company did not change the design and interior much, then in terms of technical characteristics, Mercedes received real innovations. Drivers can expect new engines that are already available on the Russian market. These are ultra-modern and ultra-economical modifications of the ML 250 BlueTec 4matic and ML 250 CDI engines. The first unit is 28% more economical than its younger brother, imagine - this colossus consumes only 6 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers. Power – 204 Horse power s, torque – almost 500 Nm. Another advantage of the engine is its Euro 6 support; the unit emits only 158 g/km.

As for the turbodiesel version, the Germans were afraid when releasing Low quality our diesel fuel. But it's not scary, let's wait. Well, today we have the following engine options for the Mercedes ML 350. Now you can become the owner of innovative engines, such as:

  • ML 350 CDI 4matic – 231 horsepower. Especially for the Russian market, the Germans decided to remove the particulate filter, for which many Russian thanks to them;
  • ML 350 4matic BlueEfficiency – 306 horses and 370 Nm. The most popular power unit from this series;
  • The good old ML 500 has not disappeared from the options: the engine still provides the car with 408 horsepower.

You can also add a few nice words to the updated 7G-TRONIC transmission, which comes with all engine options. Some automotive experts claim that the 7G-TRONIC can be called the best gearbox in the world, because it is capable of dropping several gears at a time. Even innovative DSGs have to go through the stages one by one. Of course, jumping into several gears at once is not an easy task. Switching to two gears or more is accompanied by a delay. But there is such a function, and in an emergency you can drop several gears.

Car features

And now about the car versions. For the most picky buyers, Mercedes has provided the ML 63 AMG version. The ML 63 AMG Performance Package awaits the most “serious” customers. Why for the “serious”, because this version does not have a speed limiter, and it is also possible to turn off almost all electronics. But you can feel all these delights of freedom only on the magnificent German roads.

The excellent fit of the seats is visible even in the photo; a luxurious interior has always been an integral part of the Mercedes-Benz company. The photo shows the finishing materials and a capacious central panel, which the driver gets used to after several hours of driving the ML 350

According to reviews from the owners of this crossover, there is enough space in the Mercedes ML 350 for everything: when the rear row is folded, the car literally turns into a mini-truck

In move

As reviews from owners of the Mercedes ML 350 have shown, the car performs well off-road. The photo shows that the car did not increase in size: the length and wheelbase were not increased, which is undoubtedly a good sign - the previous generation had a well-proven design

Mercedes ML (Mercedes-Benz W164) is the second generation of the popular M-class SUV from the German automobile brand Mercedes-Benz. The three-pointed star on the hood has always evoked special awe among most car enthusiasts, but not everyone can afford a new car of this class. At the moment, prices for used ML have become more affordable, thanks to which car enthusiasts, for whom status and prestige play an important role, can fulfill their old dream. When buying a car at the age of 7-10 years, you need to be aware that such a purchase is fraught with additional costs. But what they are, and what you should pay attention to when choosing a used Mercedes ML (W164) on the secondary market, I will tell you in this article.

A little history:

Work on the development of the Mercedes ML (W164) began back in 1999 and lasted 6 years. Steve Mattin worked on the car design project under the strict guidance of Peter Pfeiffer for more than 2 years. Testing of the prototype was carried out throughout 2003 - 2004 and completed at the beginning of 2005. The debut of the Mercedes ML (W164) took place in 2005 at the International Auto Show in North America. In April of the same year, mass production was launched. The car was assembled in the USA at the Chrysler plant located in Tuscaloosa (Alabama).

The new product was built on a common platform with the GL-class, thanks to which it was possible to increase the size of the body and wheelbase compared to its predecessor (W163). In 2008, at the New York auto show, a restyled version of the car was presented to the public. The main changes affected the front and rear bumpers, optics and radiator grille (it was increased in size and equipped with chrome inserts along the edges). Changes also affected the model range, albeit slightly: the diesel model ML 420 CDI was updated, the ML 280 CDI was renamed ML 300 CDI, the ML 320 CDI was renamed ML 350 CDI, and the ML 420 CDI was renamed ML 450 CDI. In 2009, the new ML 450 Hybrid SUV was presented at the New York Auto Show. Production of the second generation M-Class lasted 6 years and ended in 2011, and was replaced by the Mercedes-Benz W166 series car.

Weaknesses of Mercedes ML (W164) with mileage

The body of the Mercedes ML (W164) has practically no weak points - it is not afraid of corrosion, but only on the condition that the car was not restored after an accident. But chrome elements do not withstand the harsh realities of our winters and quickly become cloudy, after which they begin to bloom. When inspecting the car, be sure to check the trunk door; on most copies it is skewed (the screws holding the door hinge are destroyed). Also, there may be problems with door locks (mechanism failure, failures in software keyless entry"Keyless Go") If there is moisture in the trunk, the problem most likely lies in worn out lamp seals. If you do not pay attention to this for a long time, over time, problems will begin with the SAM unit, since its electronic board is located in the right niche of the trunk.

Engine

Depending on the engine size of the Mercedes ML (W164), the corresponding index was assigned: gasoline - 3.5-ML350 (272 hp), 5.0-ML500 (308 hp), 5.5-ML550 (388 hp) 6, 2-ML 63 AMG (510 hp); diesel - 3.0-ML280 CDI, ML320 CDI (190 and 224 hp) since 2009 ML300 CDI (190 and 204 hp) ML350 CDI (224 hp), 4.0-ML420 CDI (306 hp).

Gasoline

Most often found on the secondary market is a 3.5-liter gasoline power unit. Operating experience has shown that the engine is generally reliable, but some shortcomings have still been identified. As a rule, problems begin after the first 100,000 miles. The most common drawback is wear of the cermet sprockets of the balance shaft. If there is a breakdown, in most cases the “Check Engine” error is displayed on the instrument panel. Also, a signal about the presence of a problem will be the “dilation” of the engine, vibrations and metallic ringing when starting a cold engine. Another problem with characteristic symptoms– stretching of the timing chain, this happens at a mileage of 100-150 thousand km.

Replacing the chain and shaft sprockets is a rather labor-intensive process (to perform the work it is necessary to remove the motor), which is why the cost of the work is quite high (1500-3000 USD). It is this fact that forces many owners to get rid of the car at the first alarm bells (be sure to conduct a full engine diagnostics before purchasing). When performing repairs, it is advisable to immediately replace the chain guide, the magnets of the camshaft adjustment mechanism and the oil pump, so as not to pay twice for the removal and installation of the power unit. Often, owners of cars with a 5.5 engine (388 hp) face the same problems, however, in this case, eliminating most of the shortcomings does not require removing the engine, which significantly reduces the cost of repairs. Closer to the mileage of 150,000 km, many Mercedes ML (W164) owners have to change the exhaust manifold due to problems with the vacuum rods of the adjustable dampers (on copies after 2007, this problem was eliminated). A signal that there is a problem will be a wandering idle speed.

All gasoline engines suffer from oil leaks, most often leaks appear on the plastic plugs of the cylinder head. Also, on a car with a mileage of more than 100,000 km, oil leaks can be found at the junction of the filter housing and the oil cooler heat exchanger due to a leaky seal. Owners of pre-restyling cars often encountered such a problem as “freezing” of the plastic swirl flaps of the intake manifold, which is why they had to change the entire manifold. When using low quality fuel, catalysts die prematurely. The problem is solved by replacing them with flame arresters. The 5.0 engine has proven itself to be the most reliable; of its shortcomings, only high consumption fuel and high transport tax, otherwise there are practically no complaints about it. The car uses 2 batteries, they usually last for about 5 years; to replace them you will have to pay almost $100. for every. Once every 100,000 km you have to change the starter solenoid relay; for replacement they ask for 40-70 USD.

Diesel Mercedes ML (W164)

On diesel engines, during long trips, there is a decrease in the operating life of the turbine (during normal operation, the turbine lasts up to 300,000 km). The main reason for premature wear of a part lies in its not very favorable location (installed in a place where the temperature is highest). The cost of the turbine will surprise even wealthy ML owners (about 2000 USD). Also, common disadvantages of diesel engines include the rapid appearance of carbon deposits on the exhaust manifold, which over time begins to fall off and can “kill” the turbine. Significant costs may also be incurred if glow plugs are not replaced in a timely manner. The fact is that if a spark plug burns out, it is unlikely to be unscrewed naturally, and in order to replace them, you will have to remove the engine head and drill out the burnt spark plug.

If extraneous vibrations appear on the car, you need to pay attention to the crankshaft pulley coupling, it may have begun to fail. Also, due to the large weight of power units, engine mounts have to be replaced quite often. Diesel engines are equipped with a “Common Rail” system, which is an advantage and, at the same time, a disadvantage. The advantages include the efficiency of motors. The disadvantages are the sensitivity of the system to fuel quality. If there are no good gas stations in your region, you need to be prepared for frequent, expensive repairs of injectors, injection pumps and the EGR valve.

Transmission

Mercedes ML (W164) is equipped only with the 7G-Tronic automatic transmission. The automatic transmission has a number of problems, most often annoying jerks when starting, accelerating and stopping. In most cases, flashing the transmission control unit helps to cope with this problem. The valve body is not famous for its reliability; its service life rarely exceeds 100,000 km. The main signal that there is a problem will be jerks during acceleration. If you do not contact the service on time, the clutch pack will soon need to be replaced. Replacing the valve body costs $1,500, but you can save money by purchasing a repair kit, in which case you can fix the problem for $500. By 150,000 km, the oil pump “dies” on most copies; if it is not replaced in time, the ECM electronic control unit will fail due to high temperatures. All of these defects, except for one - leaks in the automatic cooling tubes, were eliminated after restyling.

Among the shortcomings of the all-wheel drive system, we can highlight problems with the front axle gearbox (100-150 thousand km). Vibrations and hum will notify you of the imminent demise of the gearbox. To fix the breakdown you will have to pay 500-700 USD. Not much lives longer and front driveshaft. At a mileage of 120-170 thousand km (depending on operating conditions), the bearings begin to hum. Often, the sound can also come from the outboard bearing, which dealers, as a rule, change together with the driveshaft; for unofficials, the bearing can be changed separately. With active use of the all-wheel drive system, the transfer case chain stretches to 100,000 km. The disease is accompanied by crackling and grinding noises under load. Transfer case, like automatic transmission, with correct operation do not cause serious problems up to 200-250 thousand km.

Suspension reliability of Mercedes ML (W164)

This model is presented on the market with two types of suspension - independent spring and air suspension. If we talk about which of the two types of suspension to give preference to, then, in terms of reliability, a conventional suspension will be preferable, and in terms of comfort, pneumatic suspension. In a spring suspension, you most often have to change the stabilizer struts, approximately once every 60-70 thousand km. After 50,000 km they start to squeak ball joints, and after 20-30 thousand km they have to be changed. Once every 100-120 thousand km, replacement is required: shock absorbers, wheel bearings and silent blocks of levers (they are replaced as an assembly with levers). The rear suspension does not require intervention up to 150,000 km, the only exception being shock absorbers (their service life rarely exceeds 130,000 km).

Repair of the Mercedes ML (W164) air suspension will have to be done every 80-100 thousand km. The cost of one original front air spring is about 1000 USD, the rear one is about 500 USD. If worn-out pneumatic cylinders are not replaced in a timely manner, this will negatively affect the service life of the compressor, the replacement of which costs 2000-3000 USD. To check the condition of the pneuma, raise the machine to the maximum level and leave it in this position for half an hour (the machine should not drop even a single mm).

Often, when driving on an uneven road, extraneous knocks are heard from the suspension; check the fastening of the front pneumatic elements to the struts - the fasteners weaken over time and require banal tightening. The steering rack is generally reliable and can last up to 200,000 km without repair, but there have been cases when it began to leak at a mileage of 100-120 thousand km (it can be eliminated by replacing oil seals and seals). The weak points in the steering are: rods (run up to 90-110 thousand km) and the steering shaft cardan. Also, there are complaints about the reliability of the power steering pump; when replacing the pump, it is recommended to change the reservoir as well, since the filter mesh in it quickly becomes clogged. Brake system it is reliable, but due to the considerable weight of the car, the brake pads wear out quite quickly (30-35 thousand km).

Salon

The quality of the interior finishing materials of the Mercedes ML (W164) leaves an ambiguous impression. The plastic from which the central panel and other interior elements are made are of high quality and retain their original appearance for a long time. But, the seat trim does not correspond to the class of the car, the fact is that the seats are made of eco-leather, which after 100,000 km cracks and begins to peel off. As for electrics, over the years, it begins to present unpleasant surprises, such as malfunctions in the climate control (“electronic damper servos are glitchy”), sound signal and standard audio system (does not return discs). Fixing even minor problems in electronics is not a cheap pleasure.

Result:

Mercedes ML (W164) is generally a fairly reliable car, but copies produced after 2009 are considered less problematic. Unfortunately, the air suspension presents many problems, and the cost of individual spare parts and labor exceeds all reasonable limits.

If you are the owner of this car model, please describe the problems that you encountered while using the car. Perhaps your review will help the readers of our site when choosing a car.
