Jigsaw for cutting out from a sewing machine. DIY jigsaw machine - simple modifications! How to make a jigsaw from a sewing machine

Here general scheme jigsaw machine operation.

I had a homemade machine, I already briefly wrote about it. Since I am a furniture maker, I made it from leftover LMDF. Cheap and cheerful :). I didn’t care at all about appearance, as long as I worked. And he did a good job! On it I understood all the nuances of sawing from solid hardwood, such as walnut, oak, ash. Everything would be fine, but the drive, and it was a Krees 350W construction jigsaw. I worked for 15 years! The speed control of the drive is “closed”, it turns on immediately to maximum and immediately breaks the file. I couldn’t find a native branded regulator. I have tried all kinds of regulators, dimmers for chandeliers and regulators from the seams. machines, vacuum cleaners. The desired result, namely a wide range of adjustment, I could not achieve.

The photo shows the principle of operation of the jigsaw. a construction jigsaw transmits oscillatory movements to a rocker arm, on which a file is in turn attached.

In the end I gave up. The Moor has done his job, the Moor must go. I decided to buy a new jigsaw drive. All Chinese versions of jigsaws are not suitable; adjustment on them is the same name. IN company store Makita found what I was looking for. 450 W jigsaw. Wide range of adjustment, and does not scream like Chinese jigsaws! Works quietly!

Here is my new drive, Makita 4327.

I found a new drive, but it didn’t work out to install it instead of the old one, the height is not suitable. I decided that rather than redo it, it would be better to make a new one, taking into account the elimination of the inconveniences identified during the process of working on the old one.

1. Increase the clearance from the file to the frame (on the old one it was 27 cm). For this you need an elongated rocker arm.

2. Increase the vertical stroke of the saw for good chip removal. (on the old one, the saw stroke is 18mm.)

3. Appearance! Schaub was not ashamed to take photographs. :)

And so! the machine is ready!

Here it is my new machine!

The clearance from the file to the frame is 45cm! The vertical stroke of the saw is 30mm! Dream!

Test cutting. The result is excellent! The Makita regulator works great. The machine makes noise like a household sewing machine.

Home craftsmen perform a large number of works related to the need to cut boards or sheet materials. Cutting or sawing out various curved shapes is possible only with the help of a special tool - a jigsaw. Exist different kinds similar tools, but they are all based on a single principle - the reciprocating movement of the cutting tool.

To mechanize the work, special hand-held jigsaws or jigsaw machines have been developed. They provide significant assistance to many craftsmen in making their work easier and faster. Purchasing a ready-made machine is expensive and not always advisable - most of the time it will sit idle in vain. However, it is possible to make such a machine yourself. Exists interesting option designs of a jigsaw from a sewing machine. Let's take a closer look at this idea.

The working principle of a jigsaw machine

Jigsaw machine designed for cutting sheet materials or boards along a pre-designed contour. Unlike most machines, it is capable of performing not only straight, but also curved cuts. The operating principle of the machine is to create a characteristic movement of the saw blade, fixed on opposite sides. The main elements of a jigsaw machine are:

Figure 1 – Elements of a jigsaw machine

  • Desktop;
  • frame or bracket with tension mechanism;
  • electric motor;
  • crank mechanism.

When the engine starts, the crank mechanism converts rotation into reciprocating motion, which is transmitted to a frame with a tensioned file.

The workpiece is placed on the work table and fed to the cutting tool.

The master visually controls the direction of the cut and corrects it by turning and changing the feed direction, which allows for accurate and clean cutting along a given contour.

The length of the file, as a rule, is significantly longer than that of manual design options, which allows you to work with thicker workpieces (with certain limitations). Working with a jigsaw is more precise and accurate, allowing for increased productivity and quality. At the same time, open saw blade creates a risk of injury and requires compliance with safety regulations.

How to make a jigsaw?

Using a sewing machine as a donor for making a jigsaw allows you to quickly and easily obtain a high-quality and reliable stationary tool. The dimensions of the sewing machine are compact enough so that you can freely store it in your apartment, the main thing is to make a removable work table.

Serious alterations are not required, since the working rod is already there and you just need to install the mount for the file and assemble the tension mechanism. It is impossible to use such a machine for cutting thick materials; the design of the machine itself will prevent this. But for small and precise work this design is optimal.

Important! There are machine designs in which the machine is placed under the work table in an inverted position. This option allows you to make a device for cutting thicker materials.

  1. Sewing machine.
  2. Bolt with nut.
  3. Spring (coil or flat).
  4. Two corners.

Required tools:

  1. Electric drill with a set of drills.
  2. Grinder with cutting disc.
  3. Pliers.
  4. Screwdriver.

Attention! The list of tools and materials required for assembling a jigsaw from a sewing machine is given as an approximate list. The machine design may be complex and require the use of additional materials and devices.

Step-by-step instruction:

Figure 2 – Table for a jigsaw
  1. Remove the shuttle mechanism located under the needle (if remade old typewriter, can be completely detached bottom part, leaving only the drive unit and crank.
  2. Install the typewriter on the desktop, for which it is easiest to use a piece of chipboard or other durable sheet material(plywood, laminated chipboard, carpentry board of small thickness).
  3. Make a hole for the file, trying to place it as accurately as possible under the stem of the machine.
  4. Assemble the tensioning device under the table. The simplest option is a flat leaf spring, at the end of which a saw mounting mechanism is attached. Its most accessible type is a regular bolt, in which a transverse hole is made and threaded. A bolt is inserted into the file, which screws into this thread and holds the file.

It is necessary to dwell in more detail on the tension mechanism. It is a spring-like structure. On the sides of the hole, corners are installed, between which a spring is placed. It is attached at two ends to the corners, and in the middle part, directly under the hole for the file, another hole is drilled for a bolt that will hold the blade.

The spring should be adjusted so that the maximum lowered rod of the machine corresponds to the horizontal position of the spring (without bending). If the force seems too small, you can install several springs in a pack. As a spring, you can use an old metal meter cut to size, or a cut piece of old hacksaw blade. The main thing is that the metal is sufficiently elastic.

At this point, the first stage of assembling the jigsaw machine can be considered complete. All that remains is to make the upper mechanism for attaching the file.

Remaking the place where the needle is attached to the file

There is a threaded hole in the working rod of the machine that allows you to attach a saw locking mechanism. There are several options like this homemade devices, but the most durable and reliable can be called a tube put on a rod and fixed to it with a bolt. To do this, a hole is made in the upper part of the tube for a bolt, which is screwed into the hole on the rod. Another hole is made in the lower part of the tube, into which an M3 or M4 thread is cut.

The file is inserted into the tube and securely fixed with a screw. This mounting method is the easiest, but some users still find it unreliable. Therefore, there is another option - instead of a tube, take a rod with a diameter of 10-12 mm, drill a hole at one end for the rod and a transverse hole for fixing the saw holder on the rod. To install the file, a slot is made in the longitudinal direction, into which the file is inserted. It is fixed with a bolt, which is screwed into the prepared threaded hole.

Making a jigsaw from a sewing machine is a simple and short process. The result will be the appearance of a convenient and compact device that allows you to accurately and accurately cut complex curved shapes. To increase the service life of the file, you can use additional pieces of chipboard, which are placed on the work table and, as the quality of sharpening decreases, are removed. The area through which the blade cuts the workpiece changes, and sharp teeth are used again. This procedure can be done several times.

Cutting small pieces of wood is done with a jigsaw. The device is small in size and usually has an electric drive. Factory models differ in their characteristics and cost. For small volumes of wood processing, it makes sense to make a jigsaw machine yourself, using improvised materials. This requires a few factory parts.

A factory-made jigsaw is reliable device, the operation of which is guaranteed by the manufacturer. Manual models are low cost. Stationary devices are expensive, but provide proper comfort when processing wood. The set of components in the device is largely the same for everyone.

The design consists of the following parts:

The part to be processed is placed on the work table. The size of the workpiece depends on its dimensions. Some models have Rotary table, which makes working with the part easier - visibility improves. The presence of graduations makes it easier to mark the material.

Average characteristics of factory machines:

Models for specialized purposes may have radically different characteristics. There are specifications Not large sizes, for processing small parts. As well as models of large sizes, the industry also produces them for retail sales. But such options will be very expensive.

In the middle class there is high competition for consumers, so the devices will be cheaper. The characteristics are also tailored to the typical tasks of a carpenter. Based on them, you need to make drawings of a jigsaw machine with your own hands. Complex components for it are purchased in the store.

Experts classify jigsaws by type of design. The design features of the mechanism determine the processing capabilities of wooden products.

The classification is carried out depending on the design of the jigsaws.

Device types:

  • With lower support.
  • Double-support.
  • On a pendant.
  • With degree scale and stop.
  • Universal.

Models with a lower support have become most widespread. The frame of the desktop factory device has 2 halves - lower and upper. The sawing and chip cleaning model is located on the top of the bed.

The lower frame contains a controller, an electric motor, a final drive, and an on/off button. This machine allows you to work with any materials and any size.

The presence of two supports in a jigsaw is advantageous in that the upper half of the bed has an additional rail. This jigsaw is ideal for cutting small parts. The thickness of the workpieces on both models should not exceed 8 cm. The worktable of such machines, as a rule, can be adjusted in height and angle of inclination.

Suspended devices do not have a fixed frame, but are distinguished by their mobility. The material being processed is set motionless, and the master moves the working module. since the latter is attached to the ceiling, the thickness of the material is not limited. The tool is moved manually, regardless of the bed. This allows you to make patterns of complex shapes.

The presence of a scale of degrees and stops is suitable for those craftsmen who carry out processing according to the drawings. Marking allows you to avoid errors when working. There are universal models of machines on the market that allow you to perform several operations. This machine allows you to perform drilling, cutting, polishing and grinding. The cost of such devices will be much higher, but working with them will be more comfortable. These are industrial specimens.

Designs and drawings of options presented on the network homemade jigsaw are different. This is due to the imagination of the authors and the desire to make a device that will stand out from the rest. Only the concept is the same in most cases - they take a manual jigsaw as a basis and repurpose it.

Home woodworking enthusiasts often look for information on how to make a jigsaw with their own hands without any special skills. You can use a ready-made manual jigsaw as a base. The mechanism does not require careful modification. Factory handheld device- this is the drive. But the crank mechanism will have to be developed independently. Manufacturers are trying to offer consumers platforms for quick remodeling, but personal needs can only be satisfied with their product.

Assembly order:

  1. A support table is made. A sheet of metal is taken as a material and a hole is made in it. The shape is oblong, 3-4 times wider than the saw blade. Holes for fasteners are made nearby.
  2. The factory device is fixed at the bottom of the support table. Holes for fasteners are made next to the hole for the saw blade. Countersunk head screws are used as fasteners. This is necessary in order to ensure a perfectly flat plane of the table. Otherwise, the processed products will cling to the caps of the wines, which will cause inconvenience in work.
  3. The structure is fixed on a wooden table.

The advantage of creating a jigsaw machine with your own hands is that the factory tool can be disconnected at any time. When needed - in the hands of an ordinary one manual jigsaw. Therefore it is better to purchase manual option a tool that can be used on a homemade machine - it’s cheaper. Stationary devices are expensive.

Comfortable work with wooden products can be achieved by installing guide rails on a homemade support table. Additionally, markings are applied to the table, which makes it easier to measure distances on parts during processing.

Jigsaw manual type as the main device for the machine has disadvantages. The main problem is the file - it is too wide in manual models. Because of this, fine woodwork is difficult to perform with it - the curvature of the lines is limited.

The previous design is simple and does not have additional parts that make working with wood easier. The direction of modernization is the possibility of replacing the file with a thin one.

Options for improving the design:

  1. Build a rocker. The structure will be tensioned by springs on one side. The second side of the rocker is fixed to the file.
  2. Secure the file between two rollers. They serve as guides for the thin file.
  3. A stationary factory device is used as a drive for a system of two rocker arms. A file is pulled between the latter. The movement is transmitted from the factory device to the lower beam of the saw.

Design upon purchase or self-production you have to choose based on personal preferences and desire to tinker with technology. Using guide rollers is a less popular option - its reliability is poor.

Modernization by installing rocker arms is common. It is better that the factory device only serves as a drive for the jigsaw file. To do this, you need to turn off the pendulum stroke in the tool.

The heir to a grandparent's estate often gets an old sewing machine. It has already served its purpose for sewing clothes, since more precise equipment is now being produced. If you don’t have a jigsaw on your household, you don’t have to spend money on buying one. It is made with your own hands from a sewing machine.

Procedure:

Now the jigsaw for figured sawing ready for plywood. It will be more difficult to work with a manual drive because your legs will get tired. An additional disadvantage will be vibrations from force on the tool. The electric drive of the machine, converted into a jigsaw, partially solves the problem of vibrations.

An expensive jigsaw can be replaced with a design self-made. It will not be inferior in quality and functionality if you approach the assembly process responsibly. It is important to make high-quality plywood mechanisms that serve as a support table. It is desirable that the table be able to rotate. For the version with a sewing machine, this will not be possible. If desired, markings are applied to the table to make it easier to measure the parts while working.

We independently convert an old sewing machine into a jigsaw.

There are many videos on the Internet about using old sewing machines in a new way. To do this, we leave in the body only the crank, the vertical rod for attaching the needle, and the flywheel with a groove for the belt drive. An electric drive for manual sewing machines is used to rotate the flywheel. (A lyrical digression is off topic: I purchased the drive about 30 years ago to make an electric spinning wheel according to drawings from the magazine “ Young technician" Wool from a white sheep was spun on a spinning wheel and a winter sweater was knitted. The spinning wheel itself was successfully played by someone I knew, that is, it disappeared). Foot pedal to regulate speed and the electric motor in the picture below.

A review of net rollers recommends the use of leaf springs with the force application point in the center of the long spring, or a block of coil springs with precise fixation of the bottom edge of the file. A long leaf spring significantly increases the overall dimensions of the device. The coil spring unit is difficult to make at home. The chosen scheme is a short spring fixed at one end.

A piece from the old metal meter perfect for this. The spring stiffness can be adjusted by setting the number (stack) of springs and moving the clamp along the spring. Using a short spring complicates the attachment of the file, since the free end of the spring describes a curved line, and accordingly the lower end of the file will also not move strictly vertically.

Available round hole in the spring it is bored out with a file to make a rectangular hole according to the size of the file mounting unit. The result was a unit swinging along the long axis of the spring. Fixing the unit from below with a piece of rod. Fastening the file with a screw. When changing a file, the unit does not fall out because the saw clamp screw at the top and the axis of rotation at the bottom do not allow it to move at a small angle.

Making the attachment point for the upper end of the file is not difficult and is clear from the photo.

The next feature of using sewing machines for making jigsaws is the small stroke of the working rod - approximately 25 mm. For reference: the working part of purchased files is approximately 85 mm at total length files 120 mm. This shortcoming can be eliminated. To do this, the machine body is installed through a gasket (I have a thickness of 45 mm - three plates of furniture chipboard) Under the working rod there are three 15 mm gaskets. As the working part of the saw wears out, one gasket is removed, and so on.

When using homemade files (notching saw teeth on piano wire with a diameter of 1 mm over a length of about 30 mm), it is not necessary to remove the gaskets. Since the machine is quite old and worn out, that is, it rumbles, and to eliminate noise, rubber shock absorbers are attached to the base posts. The first work was made of good quality 3mm plywood.

The works are small in size. Machine length 22 cm. Puzzles approximately 8 cm.

Perhaps you have an old sewing machine lying around and it’s covered in dust.
In this article, the author of the YouTube channel “Vladimir Natynchik” will tell you how you can make a completely usable and functional electric jigsaw from it.

This homemade machine does not require turning during manufacturing. All you need are screwdrivers and keys.

Materials.
- Old electric sewing machine
-
- Aerosol paint blue metallic
- Sheet plywood
- Bolts, nuts, washers M6
- Secondary glue, soda
- A couple of bearings, these will fit

Tools used by the author.
-
- Hacksaw
- Spanners, screwdriver
- , wood drills.

Manufacturing process.
So, Vladimir found an old seagull sewing machine.

To make a machine from it, you will have to remove the mechanism for feeding the fabric and rotating the bobbin. The master warmed up those bolts that could not be unscrewed gas burner. After this procedure, everything is very easy to disassemble.

The author made a small revision in the upper part of the mechanism, lubricated important components, and removed the regulators.

Old electrical wiring was also replaced.

Then the master painted all the surfaces of the machine spray paint"blue metallic".

He was in a bit of a hurry with the painting; the machine needs to increase the stroke of the rod. After all, now the plywood will be cut, and not the fabric sewn together. He made a backing from 20mm thick plywood and screwed it between the base and top part cars.

To prevent the bolts from loosening due to vibration, the author filled them with paint.

The first check for the functionality and stroke of the blade.

There was a small problem. When there is a load on the blade, it does not hold well on the rod and moves back.

In order to solve this issue, the master made a special stop from an M6 bolt and two bearings with washers placed between them.

Having made a cut in the board, secured the bearings in it, and cut off the excess bolt.

On the underside of the machine, he secured the thrust mechanism with superglue and soda.

Now for a little testing on sawing a piece of plywood. It cuts very quickly and without chipping. Well, Vladimir gave a second life to an old car!
