Marine style frames for decoration. Marine style photo frame

Good day to all residents of the city by the sea!

This greeting is not accidental, because today’s master class was inspired by the sea. Surely all of our readers have already visited the seashore and, of course, taken a couple of photos as a souvenir. Today we invite you to work with us to make suitable frames for these photographs. Soft, round nautical-style photo frames that resemble the portholes of a ship or submarine are just what you need to preserve summer memories.

To create these photo frames, we will need two types of cardboard: thick for the base and thinner for the back of the frame. In addition to cardboard, you will also need fabric nautical style, buttons in the shape of an anchor, a decorative cord resembling a rope, some pillow filling, transparent moment glue, thick thread for a buttonhole, simple sewing supplies and a compass. You can easily find all materials in sewing stores and stationery departments in our city.

When everything you need is already in front of you, you can get started! First we make the cardboard base of the frame. To do this, using a compass, draw a circle that will determine the final dimensions of your photo frame, everything depends entirely on your desire! The frame size can be any.

Along the contour of the first circle from thick cardboard, cut out a second circle from softer cardboard, which will cover the frame on the back side.

Now it’s time to cut out the fabric frame itself. Fold your fabric of choice in half with right sides facing in. Place the cardboard base on top and trace it in a circle, adding an allowance of 3 cm for the hem of the edge.

Remove the cardboard template, place 9 cm from the edge line into the middle of the circle and cut out the middle as shown in the photo.

Sew the resulting “donut” of fabric along the inner contour,

Carefully cut the edges of the seam allowance without touching the stitching

and turn the part out so that the allowances are between the two halves of the main part.

Now you need to stitch along the outer edge of the part,

leaving a hole through which it will be convenient to fill the “donut” with pillow filling.

At this stage it is important not to overdo it or stuff the mold too tightly. Distribute the filler evenly around the circle, leaving the workpiece fairly loose, and then stitch the hole using a machine.

Now take a circle of thick cardboard and cover it with the resulting blank, folding the allowances to the wrong side.

To hold the base of the frame on the cardboard more firmly, tightly pull the edges of the allowance with threads from the wrong side as shown in the photo.

The photo frame is almost ready, all that remains is to decorate its reverse side. To do this, take a second cardboard circle and, using thick threads folded several times and a needle with a wide eye, make a loop on it.

Use glue to secure the cardboard to the main piece.

The gluing effect will be much better if you leave the parts under the press for 15-20 minutes.

After the glue has dried thoroughly, you can proceed to the most exciting moment - final decor frames. Here you can give free rein to your imagination and decorate the frame the way you want, giving it a special, unique personality! For example, you can sew buttons of various sizes to it, but in a single marine theme, and run a thick decorative cord with tassels along the edge.

That's all! All you have to do is insert the photo inside the circle, carefully sliding it under the soft inner edges.

This nautical frame can be used as a decoration for your own home or a great gift to a loved one.

Give and receive gifts, make your plans come true and good luck to everyone, your LOARA workshop.

I'll start with the background...

When my son was very young, my husband became interested in photography. I bought a Canon camera. Big. Professional. Film. There were no digital ones back then. The photographs from those times were simply excellent! And here is one of my favorites, Gleb against the backdrop of the night sea. Time flew by!

My son is already 14, and the photograph still wanders from frame to frame.

And I decided that I needed to make a good frame once and for all... in the tone of the photograph, so that it wouldn’t take on too much, wouldn’t stand out, wouldn’t obscure the child, and, of course, would be in a nautical style. And I decided that I would call it “Secrets of the Sea”.

Maybe someone will find this kind of activity boring or not to their liking, or maybe, on the contrary, they will want to prolong the memories of their past vacation and do something similar... I will be glad if my experience inspires you to create your real masterpiece!

I didn't draw a sketch like I usually do. The sketch was already in my head))) I just laid out everything that I had that was suitable for the sea on the table and started working.

It was very inconvenient to take photographs, because this time I did not have an assistant. And it happened late in the evening. But I managed to turn on the “for shooting under daylight lighting” mode on the camera.... and things went well!

We will need the following materials:

  • wooden frame (I bought it at Ikea) for a photo 13 by 18 cm;
  • rolled pressed sisal;
  • small-small pebbles (for aquariums);
  • river sand;
  • sea stars;
  • pearl beads (not natural ones);
  • various small beads;
  • different shells;
  • bugles;
  • plastic starfish (bought at a fabric store);
  • twine or cord.

Adhesive, paint and varnish materials and tools:

  • PVA construction glue;
  • glue gun
  • glue for a glue gun;
  • acrylic paints;
  • sponges different sizes(can be replaced with a sponge);
  • the brush is the thinnest;
  • scissors;
  • containers for diluting paints;
  • plate with spoon;

This is the frame, seen from the back. We need to peel back the staples and take out the back part with the glass. We return the staples to their place.

Turn the frame face up. Cut a strip of sisal the width of the frame.

Use your fingers to carefully pinch off the sisal fibers from the edges so that the cuts are not visible. It will be more natural this way. Don’t throw away the torn fibers, they will be useful to us later.

Trying on our sisal stripes. We will post material on them.

We remove the sisal and apply PVA glue to these places with a sponge or sponge.

Glue the sisal, press it where it comes off. We are waiting for it to dry a little.

Pour small pebbles into a plate.

Sprinkle the edges over the plate and this is what happened.

Now use a spoon to sprinkle with fine sand and use a hairdryer.

Roll the undiscarded torn sisal fibers into a ball and wrap lightly with twine. Secure with a glue gun. We do not cut off the end.

We flatten it a little and glue it to the frame in the place where the most large element- Starfish! We need this flattened ball to create volume. In fact, we are now making a collage. Now, it’s already beautiful!

Now comes the fun part! We fill the frame with materials, continuing to create volume. We apply glue directly to the material that we are gluing in sufficient quantity. I first “tried on” the materials and then glued them.

Add shells, pebbles, plastic stars... I laid shells with sharp noses like arrows from a star, as if creating direction, movement. There is more material along the length of the frame. Height - less.

We also lay the uncut twine beautifully so that there are natural, smooth lines. I just twist it with my fingers and let it go. He lies down himself as he should. Glue gun We fix it in several places. And you can already trim it, leaving a reserve. Beautiful, is not it?

I twisted the twine with a serpentine and glued it flat. It turned out interesting.

We do not ignore the upper right corner. It shouldn't be bulky. It should complement the main left bottom corner. Some material definitely needs to be repeated. I repeated the plastic stars and a little later put a circle of twine.

We continue to lay out the twine. It shouldn't end abruptly. There should be movement and fluidity in everything. Let's imagine that this is a current or a wave. We cut off the excess and be sure to hide the tip under some material.

This is what happened. You can probably stop here, insert a photo and admire your work, but for me it’s very primitive, then plastic stars... No, this is definitely not for me, so I’m moving on to the next stage!

Mix the paint. I took blue, black and white colors and mixed them.

The color turned out too dark blue. I decided that I needed to add red and blue, because... There is violet in the sky in the photo. And blue plus red equals purple))) I love coloring!

Using the resulting paint that suits you, paint the inside surface of the frame. It is convenient to paint with a small sponge using “smacking” movements. That's why he's a sponge. This will be our main color.

Then we move to the front side.

We paint all the shells.

Pour a little of the main color into a small cup and add black paint.

We paint all internal hard-to-reach places with a thin brush, screwing the brush into all the depressions.

After everything is painted, we finish painting the frame with the main color. Don't forget to wash your brushes and sponges!

Like that.

Let's take it acrylic paint silver and gold, mix them, apply them to the sponge and, barely touching them, go over the frame. Only the protruding parts will be painted.

And here is the marine texture. It shone, it shone! This is exactly what I wanted.

And all that remains is to spice up our collage a little. I glued a yellowish pearl into the open shell. I used white, but didn't like it.

And I freed the glued glass beads from the previously applied paint and got droplets of water or, as in childhood, secrets under the glass))) A shell shines through one such secret. Mysterious and enigmatic sea secrets...

And here is the frame itself!

I decided that there was no need to varnish, let it sit for a little while, in case I decide to “paint” it some more)))

If you decide to coat it, then use matte acrylic varnish!

I wish you health and creative success!
