The appearance of the Tikhvin Icon occurred in 1383. Tradition says that this icon was previously in Constantinople, where it was brought in the 5th century by Empress Eudokia from Jerusalem. Seventy years before the fall of Constantinople, the icon miraculously moved to the Novgorod region.

Once on Lake Ladoga, fishermen were casting their nets when an extraordinary light suddenly appeared in front of them. An icon of the Mother of God with the Eternal Child on her left hand moved in the air above the water. The icon passed over the fishermen and appeared 30 miles from the lake. At the beginning of the 19th century, the remarkable ascetic Constantine Theodulus lived his monastic life on Mount Athos, who had in his possession a miraculous image of the Mother of God, painted a century and a half ago. After the death of the elder, the image passed to his disciple Elder Martinian, who came to Athos in 1821.

This icon first became famous during a locust invasion on the fields of local residents. After procession and during the prayer service a multitude of birds suddenly flew in and rushed at the insects. The locusts rose in such a thick mass that they blocked out the sunlight.

We begin to say the prayer of the Holy Martyr Cyprian: in the days or nights, or at whatever hour you exercise, all the forces of resistance will fall away from the glory of the Living God.
This holy martyr prayed with all his soul to God with the words: Lord God, Mighty and Holy, King of those who reign, now hear the prayer of Thy servant (name). Thousands of thousands and darkness lie before You, Angel and Archangel, You weigh the secret of the heart of Your servant. Thus, if You were the first to create, I would not know that this hostile hold would not rain on a cloud, I would not create a tree of garden fruit, I would not give birth to idle wives and I would not conceive others, I would only look at the fence of the grapes, the rod would not bloom, and so I would not vegetate in the garden, and the fish of the sea are not allowed to swim, and the birds are forbidden to fly, and simply all the sorceries and all the crafty demons work for me in these gifts for the sake of my many sins. A special type of literary work attributed to St. Gregory the Wonderworker, compose incantatory prayers over those possessed by demons. Such prayers with his name are found quite often in Greek manuscripts 1). For example, you can indicate the noted prof. A. I. Prayers known with the name of St. Gregory the Wonderworker, in their content and character do not differ at all from all similar prayers adopted by other saints. As an example, let’s look at three published prayers: 1) from the handwritten euchology of the library of the Holy Sepulcher Metochion, 2) from the manuscript of the collection of V.I. Grigorovich and 3) from the prayer book of the Solovetsky Library.

The first prayer is the most extensive of those published. At the beginning of it is the Gospel text: “In the beginning was the Word” (John I, 1-5). He who said to the disciples, “Cast out the spirits,” commands the spirits to leave this man and every member of him. The Word of God is living and active. This word casts out unclean spirits into the eternal fire prepared for them. Spell prayer with the name of St. Gregory the Wonderworker in the collection of V.I. Grigorovich - from all evil and from all enemy power, to the aura of the evil demon, represents a combination of three incantatory prayers. The person praying conjures every advis and demon, male avra, female avra, avra from water, avra from blood, avra from boiled food, avra from cold food, avra from cattle, avra of an oath, every avra; he bends her tongue and tail and nails with a terrible sickle so that she does not unbend them and does not move her tail, calls on three hundred angels throwing thunder and lightning at unclean spirits: listen, evil one, leave me alone and get away from the servant of God (name of the rivers) and from his house ,—this is how the first part of the prayer ends. The third part of the prayer is addressed to the oncoming avra, transverse avra, serpent avra, spring avra, midday avra, path avra, etc., which he conjures to go out and move away from the servant of God (name of the rivers) and from flesh and bones, to retire to the mountain high, hide in the dragon, eat bones and drink his blood and not return to the servant of God and to his house. inscribed with the name of St. Gregory the Wonderworker from the perspective of their origin and influences. which are reflected in them, since they cannot be distinguished from general composition numerous incantatory and healing prayers, which constituted a special area of ​​scientific research 1). For our purpose it is sufficient to say that none of the prayers attributed to St. Gregory the Wonderworker cannot belong to him; he could not be the author of prayers with such content and such a character. The persistent attribution of such prayers, among other saints, to St. Gregory the Wonderworker finds an explanation in his biography, in which the fight against demons occupies a significant place. The Syrian life already provides examples of short prayers that the neo-Caesarean saint pronounced in such cases. This sufficiently determines why pre-existing or newly composed incantatory prayers were adopted by St. Gregory the Wonderworker. It is quite natural that prayers with his name are found much more often than with the name of St. Gregory the Theologian, and it may even be a fair assumption that where the name of Gregory the Theologian appears, originally there was the name of Gregory the Wonderworker 2).
