“I make fashion in gymnastics”
19.02.2009 10:35
The performance of the gymnasts at the Beijing Olympics was unusually dramatic: the intensity of passions was such that the athletes cried, not embarrassed by the television cameras. As a result, the new “star” of the Russian team, Evgeniya Kanaeva, took gold in the individual competition; in the team competition, gold medals were also awarded to Russian “artists”, among whom were two from Nizhny Novgorod - Elena Posevina and Daria Shkurikhina. But Nizhny Novgorod’s contribution to the victory was not limited to this: the fact is that the entire Russian rhythmic gymnastics team competed at the 2008 Olympics in costumes designed and sewn by Nizhny Novgorod fashion designer Marina Gogua. The fashion designer told a correspondent of RIA “Vremya N” about how a designer from the province began to dictate fashion to the elite of world sports, as well as about which other countries of the world athletes wear “suits from Marina”.

Marina, is it true that you dress the stars of rhythmic gymnastics?
- Is it true. For some reason, everyone thinks that the costumes for our gymnasts are made by Yudashkin or Chapurin, and I’m offended to hear this. I am the only one who fully dresses the Russian rhythmic gymnastics team for several years now. I worked with Alina Kabaeva for several years - at a time when she was the leader of our team. Now I am sewing costumes for our new “star” - Zhenya Kabaeva, as well as for other gymnasts of the Russian team. Last weekend I went to Moscow again and met with the gymnasts and their head coach Irina Viner. She is the one who decides who should wear what and where. Irina Aleksandrovna never leaves anything to chance and very carefully monitors not only how her players train, but also what they wear on the mat. So that I can imagine what the new costume should be like, Irina Viner lets me listen to the music to which the girls will perform, and the gymnasts show me the routine itself. Then I make sketches and Main coach the team approves them. And after that I start sewing.
- As far as I know, you create costumes not only for Russian gymnasts, but also for “artists” from other countries of the world. This is true?
- Yes, that's right. My “finest” hour was the 2008 Olympics, when I sewed costumes for the rhythmic gymnastics teams of four countries - Italy, Spain, Belarus and, of course, Russia. On the podium in Beijing, champion girls representing different countries stood in my outfits. And this is my greatest pride. Now I travel a lot around Europe: I regularly visit Milan, Madrid, Minsk, where girl gymnasts train, and spend even more time in Moscow at the base of the Russian national team.
- Are girls from teams from other countries around the world interested in what their rivals will compete in?
- Of course they ask. I tell the Russians. In general, when I sew costumes for different teams that will participate in the same competitions and go on the same mat, I try to control color scheme- so that there are no identical ones color combinations so that the costumes are in no way similar to each other.
- Marina, how did you become a leading fashion designer in the world of rhythmic gymnastics?
- Actually - by accident. I came to Nizhny Novgorod from Sukhumi in the early nineties, fleeing the war. Then I had neither money nor registration - only a folder with sketches of outfits. I painted them just like that, in my free time from work. By profession I am a restorer of historical monuments. But over time, I realized that restoring what others have done is not my thing. I like to create something new myself. In Nizhny Novgorod, I started looking for work and, following an advertisement, I came to a ballroom dancing salon. This is how my career as a fashion designer began. At first I sewed for ballroom dancers, then I met Nizhny Novgorod gymnasts and began sewing costumes for them. And a little later, fate brought me together with Alina Kabaeva. We still maintain friendly relations with her, although we see each other much less often than before. But I hope that she will invite me to her program “Steps to Success” on REN-TV. Honestly, it’s a shame that all of Europe wants to work with me, but for some reason in Russia and Nizhny Novgorod they don’t know me at all... But I have no time to deal with my own popularity. It is enough that I am known in the world where I work: all gymnasts know that the most fashionable costumes are made in Nizhny Novgorod. And I don’t organize PR campaigns.
-Who else do you work with?
- With skaters. Now I am sewing costumes for the Russian junior team. It’s more interesting for me to work with figure skaters as a fashion designer - there is more room for imagination and fewer restrictions. Rhythmic gymnastics has its own canons: the skirt must be of a certain length, and no voluminous appliqués are allowed. Figure skating has a more interesting cut; you can make various inserts and shuttlecocks. And in gymnastics, a costume is a canvas with which you need to display all the drama. And this task is difficult, but incredibly interesting. And I love doing it. I won't be modest - last years I make fashion in gymnastics. I changed a lot in the gymnasts’ outfits, making them elegant, removing unnecessary variegation, and starting to use drapery.
- What will Evgenia Kanaeva wear at the European Championships?
- I sew her several suits. There will be one white, the second - blue and pink, the third - scarlet. I'm still thinking about the fourth costume.
- Do you now sew for ballroom dancing?
- I have so much work with athletes that there is practically no time left for “balancers”. But old clients come to me, who, over the years that I have been designing outfits for them, have already become my friends. I can't refuse them. But my main job now is to dress gymnastics stars.
- Don’t gymnasts ask you “out of connections” to sew outfits not for the mat, but for life?
- Not from Moscow yet, but Nizhny Novgorod gymnasts come regularly. First there were swimsuits, then - prom dresses, then it was time for the girls to get married - they were asking for wedding dresses and evening dresses. As children grow, orders change too.
- For several years you have been sewing suits rented apartment. Now you have your own studio?
- I now have my own cozy workshop. I called her “Kochareli” - this means that I came from Kochari. I left the place where I was born a long time ago, but I miss it very much.
- Who do you root for during competitions?
- Of course, for the Russians. I actually worry about everyone who wears my costumes. After all, I invest a part of myself in them, which means that success or failure will have my contribution too. But at the Olympics, I rooted for our Russian girls with all my heart.

Video report with M. Gogua http://nnovgorod.rfn.ru/video.html?type=r&id=12567

Four rhythmic gymnastics teams performed at the last Olympics in costumes designed and tailored in a small workshop in Nizhny Novgorod. This is where fashion designer Marina Gogua works. At previous Olympics and world championships, Alina Kabaeva, Irina Chashchina, Laysan Utyasheva and other world stars of rhythmic gymnastics performed in her costumes.

Marina was born in Abkhazia, on the advice of her parents she trained as a restorer of historical monuments, but life changed dramatically when she fled the war, moved to Nizhny Novgorod and came into contact with the world of rhythmic gymnastics. In a conversation with a TASS correspondent, the fashion designer talked about how the brightest costumes of our famous gymnasts were invented, how she jokingly saved Alina Kabaeva from the evil eye, and why many athletes consider her costumes to be a talisman.

Fled from the war, and another life began

In the 90s there was a war in Sukhumi, and my family and I had to leave our home, leave the country, and become refugees. I already had Small child. It seemed normal life the end has come. We didn't even know where to run. Only after a while did we realize that we had experienced something terrible, but most importantly, we all survived.

It so happened that we ended up in Nizhny Novgorod - my brother studied here. This city sheltered me, hugged me to its chest when I was very bad. Here I found the support of many kind people, here I began a completely different life.

One day I saw an advertisement that said they were looking for creative people, and I, not yet really knowing the city, followed this advertisement with a sinking heart. It was a workshop where they made costumes for ballroom dancing, circus performers and figure skaters. They really liked my work and they hired me. This is where I found myself, and it was great. In the workshop I met Tatyana Sergaeva, the coach of Nizhny Novgorod gymnasts.

One day I saw an advertisement that said that they were looking for creative people, and I, not yet really knowing the city, followed this advertisement with a sinking heart.

This is an extraordinary person, thanks to whom all the good things that I do and what I have achieved have happened in my life. She believed in me. This is not just a brilliant coach, but also a huge artist. Many of the costume design ideas came from her. We worked a lot together with her. The first gymnast that Tatyana and I dressed was Victoria Anikina, now a judge international class. This is also an unusual, sincere person. How could I not justify their trust? I worked day and night, mastering the intricacies of sewing a gymnastics costume. And I felt that it was mine.

"Forget everything you see" and make something new

The fashion of gymnasts then was unique, with more emphasis on national costumes, no avant-garde. As a rule, everything was openwork in front, a lot of appliqués, sequin embroidery, but in the back there was no pattern. Then Tatyana Sergaeva says to me: “Forget everything that you see, let’s do something so that no one will have it.” We then came up with a costume for Alena Posevina, two-time champion Olympic Games. She was an aspiring star then, a very beautiful girl.

And I suggested making a costume where everything is the other way around: in front everything is modest, only some small element on the neck, and on the back something incredible is happening. For everyone, including the audience, it was a shock - this didn’t exist then.

After this, Tatyana says to me: “Marina, we have taken one step, but we must move forward, people are already expecting something new from us.” And so every time she set me up to create something new and unusual.

Our work was noticed by Irina Aleksandrovna Viner ( head coach of the Russian rhythmic gymnastics team. - Approx. TASS), who was always looking for something new, invited me to Moscow. Just then Alina Kabaeva was preparing for the World Championships in Germany, and I suggested that instead of sparkles, Irina Wiener sew Swarovski rhinestones on her suit. They were already used in ballroom dancing; in gymnastics it was believed that the stones were heavy and would get in the way. But she agreed to try. We tried Swarovsky stones for the first time on Alina. Irina Alexandrovna really liked this idea, and we are still working with it. It has now become the norm that gymnasts wear costumes and carry 1.5–2 kg of rhinestones.

Just then Alina Kabaeva was preparing for the World Championships in Germany, and I suggested that Wiener sew Swarovski rhinestones on her suit instead of sparkles. They were already used in ballroom dancing; in gymnastics it was believed that the stones were heavy and would get in the way

Fashion in gymnastics developed, it became diverse, multi-layered. We began to make various draperies in costumes, skirts with uneven hems, in several layers, experimented with necklines and voluminous appliqués. Once they even came up with the idea of dressing the gymnasts in evening dress - it was an elegant fuchsia evening dress with large roses, only short and sleeveless. And it was like nothing else. Everyone was discussing how permissible this was in gymnastics. But then in rhythmic gymnastics they began to make leotards without sleeves. And our girls still have this evening suit in their wardrobe.

In the future, I think gymnastics fashion will tend towards elegant minimalism.

How Alina Kabaeva was “protected” from the evil eye

Many, including our athletes, sincerely believe that my swimsuits bring good luck. It all started with the Olympics in Athens, where Alina Kabaeva was supposed to perform.

Before this, she performed unsuccessfully at the Olympics, and I jokingly told her: “Alina, let’s give you a big eye in your swimsuit, and no one will jinx you.” She laughed and said: "Let's do it." Music just allowed this.

I asked the coach if there was any ban on this kind of symbols - nothing was said about this in the canons. And jokingly we made this costume with an eye in the swimsuit design.

After that it started. There were rumors that Marina had a talisman, and if she sewed a costume, she would draw an eye that would protect her from the evil eye and all sorts of bad luck. Everyone came and asked to draw this eye somewhere, and they are still asking.

"A gymnast must be sure that she is beautiful"

I was lucky enough to work with a whole galaxy of rhythmic gymnastics stars. We dressed Irina Chashchina, Olga Kapranova, Laysan Utyasheva, Daria Kondakova, Daria Dmitrieva, Zhenya Kanaeva. The girls were all completely different in character, each had their own style. But none of them were capricious. They were so easy to talk to, friendly and trusted me completely.

Everything is important for victory: and appearance, and artistry, and costume as a kind of psychological stimulus. When a gymnast goes out to perform, she must be sure that she is beautiful. This confidence gives you strength that helps you overcome many barriers.

What they have achieved in life is all through incredible work, and when a person achieves something with such hard work, he is not capricious. Sometimes they haven’t even seen a new swimsuit yet and put it on literally before going out on the carpet. And they were always happy and grateful. And I tried to please them, strained my brains, came up with ideas, spent a lot of time at work, forgot about my family, because I saw how hard work they achieved victories. Everything is important there: appearance, artistry, and costume as a kind of psychological stimulus. When a gymnast goes out to perform, she must be sure that she is beautiful. This confidence gives you strength that helps you overcome many barriers.

“I suggested adding a clock to space”

When creating a costume for the Olympics, it is a lot of stress and a huge responsibility. Irina Aleksandrovna is a very demanding person. She gathered all the artists across Russia. Preparing for the Olympics in Rio, she wanted not just a beautiful suit, but something supernatural. She and I suffered for six months, developing the image for our “artists” in group performances.

At one point she says, “Let’s make flowers with space.” I've never seen anything like this before. At first it seemed strange to me, but then I thought it was interesting - such an unexpected combination. She also suggested adding a clock to this plot. We developed this idea with stars, planets and flowers until the very last moment. The swimsuits were sewn by a master from Moscow, and Irina Viner told me to make jumpsuits in the same space theme. But they didn’t have time to “test” them in competitions and it was risky to enter the Olympics. Gymnasts are very superstitious. Therefore, they performed in swimsuits that had already been tested. The most important thing, I think, is the end result - they won!

Gymnasts from Georgia (Salome Pazhava), from the USA (Laura Zeng), and the national teams of Japan and Spain, with whom our coaches work, performed at the Olympics in my costumes.

For Japanese gymnasts, I first came up with a costume with a Japanese theme: with a sunrise on a blue background, with lines stylized as hieroglyphs, and a sakura branch. But before the Olympics they changed the music, it became more energetic, with Brazilian motifs, and these costumes no longer fit. They came out in lemon-colored swimsuits. It was already known that the third performance would be to the music of Natalia Oreira, and I came up with funny costumes with flounces and big hearts for them for this number. They have a very lively and interesting program. And they, led by coach Inna Bystrova, were very grateful.

Costume as a talisman

In our workshop they order swimsuits for athletes from the most different countries. Foreign athletes buy our costumes with a bang, they are very much appreciated, and they especially like to wear the swimsuits that our stars wore.

I can say that many gymnasts who no longer compete and sold their leotards call me and ask me to sew something in return. They say: when my suit disappeared from the wardrobe, troubles began to happen. They believe that I have some kind of energy that is transferred to the suit, and because of this everything will be fine for them.

I am often asked to sew Wedding Dress like Zhenya Kanaeva when she got married. Although this is completely different from a gymnastics outfit. She could have found any dress she wanted in Europe, but she came to me. And we made her a dress for the wedding, everything turned out as planned - Irina Viner really liked it.

In fact, I think the recipe for a successful costume is that I am in a good mood all the time in the workshop. Where I work there should be only good energy. There are five of us working, and I try my best not to offend my assistants in any way. I know that my girls love me, respect me, and I love them very much. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have worked with me for 10–20 years. We do our work with good mood- this means a lot.

Gymnasts from several countries took to the mat in her leotards at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Japan, Spain, Georgia, America... Due to an unfortunate misunderstanding, Marina Gogua's costumes are on Olympic Games 2016 was not seen on the “artists” of the Russian national team, which Nizhny Novgorod has been dressing for twenty years.

STAR DESIGNER
During this time, the fame of the Nizhny Novgorod fashion designer spread beyond the borders of the Russian Federation. Foreigners not only began to order swimsuits for their athletes from her, but also copied elements of her designs.

An incident live on the air during the singles performances at the Olympics in Brazil, when a behind-the-scenes commentator announced with full confidence to the whole country that Ksenia Mustafaeva, who competed for France, sews swimsuits in Nizhny Novgorod, Marina Gogua was surprised.

However, there is nothing to be surprised about. She has been a trendsetter in rhythmic gymnastics since the end of the last century. It was her, for example, who came up with the idea to decorate the swimsuits of “artists” with Swarovski crystals.

— We tried rhinestones for the first time on Alina Kabaeva’s swimsuit. After that, others began to use the technology,” emphasized Marina Gogua. — 24 years ago, gymnastics looked different. Coach Tatyana Sergaeva became interested in my work as an artist. She explained to me how they dressed in gymnastics at that time, what was fashionable, and said: “But you have to do something that didn’t exist!”

First, Sergaeva and Gogua dressed Elena Posevina. In defiance of the then bright suits with an abundance of sewing, the Nizhny Novgorod fashion designer offered a calm, elegant swimsuit. After which Marina Gogua in the world of gymnastics was immediately dubbed the author of intelligent costumes, and Elena Posevina became a two-time Olympic champion - in 2004 and 2008 - in group exercises.

And this is the first version of the swimsuit for the performance of our “artists” in Rio

Victoria Anikina, who later became an international class coach, sported Gogua’s outfits on the carpet. Olympic champion 2004 Alina Kabaeva, silver medalist of the Olympic Games of the same year Irina Chashchina, two-time Olympic champion of 2008 and 2012 Evgenia Kanaeva, thirteen-time world champion, future silver medalist of the 2016 Olympics Yana Kudryavtseva, future Olympic champion of 2016 Anastasia Maksimova...

SUKHUMI TURN
There are many talented artists in Russia, but the palm in dressing “artists” went to Marina Gogua. She even managed to move haute couture bison.

- It is fantastic! Why am I successful? Because talented people were with me all the time. Before today supported by great coaches Tatyana Sergaeva, Natalya Tishina, Victoria Anikina, choreographer Irina Zinovka, Irina Viner-Usmanova. How can you let such people down? - says the Nizhny Novgorod fashion designer. — Irina Aleksandrovna Wiener is very strict, but fair, honest and kind. And with such people it’s easy for me personally. I am pleased that she has believed in me for so long. It's responsible and exciting.

Marina had a passion for clothing design since childhood. In my mother’s closets there was always the necessary fabric, and on the window there was a curtain, the purpose of which Marina saw in a different way. She knew exactly what all this would turn into with the help of scissors. And for good intentions Little Coco Chanel often got it from her mother.

After school, Marina wanted to become a designer. But 35 years ago no one had any idea what it was. Parents advised Marina to enter the Tbilisi Art Academy to become a restorer.

— There are many architectural monuments in Georgia. And I would love to restore the frescoes, but you can’t use your imagination there. You need to restore what was created before you. “I’m closer to what I’m doing now,” Marina admits.

However, the turn towards costume design for the “artists” of the Russian team was too abrupt...

Marina lived in Sukhumi. I thought this was the best beautiful city, in which she will live forever.

But in 1992 the war began. All of Marina's relatives were captured. I had to leave my father's house. For six months, with a small child in her arms, Marina lived under bombing at the Sukhumi airport. She didn’t go anywhere - she thought that if she prayed in Sukhumi, her loved ones would survive. And one day they returned...

At that time, Marina’s brother was studying with Marina in Nizhny. “You will not be left without bread,” he told his sister. - Half of what I have will be yours. Come!"

Finding herself in a foreign city in the dashing 90s, she did not think about luxury. The task was to survive.

- And, thank God, we came here to Nizhny Novgorod! This extraordinary city sheltered me, hugged me, gave me the opportunity to live,” Marina barely holds back her tears.

“Very kind people were with me all the time. Many thanks to them! Thanks a lot Nizhny Novgorod!

That’s why she was proud to the point of tears when the name of the city that opened her a second life was repeated from the TV screen to the whole country live from the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Now Marina has her own studio in an ordinary “kopeck piece” in the Leninsky district, where, together with her assistants, who have become her second family, Marina Gogua conjures the image of Russian “artists”.

TIME HAS RUSHED
- What a woman can’t stand for the sake of beauty! - the fashion designer laughs, speaking about the endurance of our gymnasts, who, in order to perform effectively, sometimes have to wear a leotard that is two kilograms heavier due to rhinestones.

The number of these expensive Swarovski glass pieces on some Gogua swimsuits reaches six or even seven thousand. They are all different in size.

Work on swimsuits includes at least 20 manual operations. Sometimes you have to stick on seven thousand crystals.

— Rhythmic gymnastics costumes require expensive materials. Rhinestones are glued with a special reliable glue. The suits last for several years. The girls pass them on to other gymnasts. Recently my swimsuit from 20 years ago was found somewhere. Imagine, it still exists! - Marina smiles. —
The swimsuit is the canvas on which I paint.

The work is painstaking, manual, and takes from two weeks to several months. And if for young Nizhny Novgorod gymnasts such a robe costs 30 thousand rubles, then for the stars of the Russian national team it will cost from 60 thousand. And each “artist” will need at least four such masterpieces for one Olympics.

It took six months to create the costume for the performance. Russian gymnasts at the 2016 Olympics.

The head coach of the rhythmic gymnastics team, Irina Viner-Usmanova, set the Nizhny Novgorod fashion designer the task of developing a costume for group exercises to the music of Sviridov “Time, forward!”.

On the 2013 European champion Daria Svatkovskaya (daughter of Deputy Governor Dmitry Svatkovsky), the costume of the Nizhny Novgorod fashion designer plays with a palette and rhinestones

First, Marina came up with a swimsuit. On the front is the sun, an ear of corn, and on the back is a clock, the hands of which are lined with black rhinestones. Irina Alexandrovna liked everything, except the color: part of the swimsuit was made in scarlet. “Every second team can wear swimsuits of this color!” — Wiener gave her verdict.

Through joint creativity, the idea of a jumpsuit was born. The costume had to be associated with music - a little cosmic. And, according to Wiener’s idea, the space in the suit had to be combined with flowers.

In front are stars, planets and... flowers. There is a watch on the back. Time leads into space.

— When I was a child in Abkhazia, my mother had a lot of roses in her yard. And in the evenings I often saw bright roses and a lot of stars in the sky,” Marina recalls. “This picture from childhood appeared in front of me, and I realized that Irina Alexandrovna’s idea was brilliant.

The head coach of the Russian rhythmic gymnastics team approved the current overalls. But…

There were three weeks left before the Olympics in Rio, and no more competitions in rhythmic gymnastics were expected. The girls did not have time to try out the overalls in practice and were afraid to wear them at the Olympic Games. These gymnasts are superstitious people...

Marina herself believes that the success of our “artists” is the merit of their coaches and the crazy work of the girls. And the suit... well, it’s a mood booster. They are girls, which means they should look elegant.

However, several years ago, when the Japanese were making a film about who helped Alina Kabaeva win the Olympics, they did not forget to talk about the Nizhny Novgorod fashion designer Marina Gogua.
The Olympic theme will continue in the next issue.
