Results of the Olympics in artistic gymnastics. Someone had to lose...

RIO DE JANEIRO, August 10. /TASS/. Russian gymnasts won silver at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a score of 176.688 points. Aliya Mustafina, Daria Spiridonova, Maria Paseka, Seda Tutkhalyan and Angelina Melnikova performed for the team.

The first place was taken by the American women (184.897), the third by the Chinese (176.003).

For the Russian team, this medal was the 12th at the 2016 Games and the second in team competitions in artistic gymnastics. The day before, the Russian men's team also won a silver medal. In total, the Russians have 3 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze.

Biographies of athletes

Melnikova was born on July 8, 2000 in Voronezh. European champion 2016 in the team championship, multiple European champion among juniors. Russian champion in individual and team all-around.

Today, at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a set of medals in the individual all-around gymnasts will be played.

Among the contenders for the Rio 2014 awards who have overcome the qualification barrier will be two Russians - Aliya Mustafina and. The first is the most “seasoned” of ours (if you can say so about a girl who is soon 22 years old), the leader of the team, the second is a young talent who has not yet revealed herself in all her glory. The combination is downright classic: youth and experience.

Of course it will be very difficult for them. Mustafina did not hide that team competitions are a priority for her, and besides, they took a lot of energy. It will not be easy for our leader to fully recover, given the accumulated injuries and those suffered in last years operations. It’s not for nothing that she announced her retirement from big-time sports a couple of years ago.

Seda is younger (barely 17), and it is easier for her to return to normal condition, but our gymnast may not have enough experience in fighting Chinese and American “monsters”. In the best sense of the word.

But there are chances. Recent starts have shown that the rivals are not without fault. Moreover, in all-around competition, stability and character are no less important factors than complexity, and Aliya is definitely not lacking in character and sporting anger. Let's believe in the best and root for our beauties.

Olympic Games 2016 in Rio. Medal Contenders

The Olympic Games will start very soon in Rio. And the artistic gymnastics competitions will begin on August 6. It is of course pointless to guess in advance who will win what. But it is possible to consider the chances of the main contenders for medals. The analysis applies to men's gymnastics.

Team Championship

Number one contender gold medalJapan team. All five gymnasts (Kohei Uchimura, Yusuke Tanaka, Ryohei Kato, Kenzo Shirai, Koji Yamamuro) are excellent all-around athletes with very high aspirations for high scores in individual events. Japan is ready as never before and its chances for medals are preliminary higher than those of the Chinese squad. The Japanese are slightly inferior in complexity to the Chinese in terms of the sum of all programs, but they have a higher score for technology. As a result, the Japanese odds are favored. But there are still weaknesses in this team. Yusuke Tanaka has been very unstable this season (as in previous ones). He can make simply gorgeous bars and a crossbar, or maybe he just completely ruins them. The Japanese included Yamamuro, a rings specialist, which weakened their pommel horse exercise. Scores on this apparatus are expected to be lower than on other all-around events.

The first contender for the silver medal is Chinese team. The Chinese have not yet announced the final lineup, but it can be assumed that they will be: Deng Shudi, Yu Hao, Lin Chaopan, Zhang Chenglong, Liu Yang. Chinese athletes have increased their difficulty compared to the previous year. They also have a weak horse. On freestyle the Chinese are inferior to the Japanese, on rings they are superior. On the vault they are inferior, on the uneven bars they are superior, and on the horizontal bar they are inferior again. Those. the fight will be very hot. But we also note that the Chinese, again, may not perform perfectly, which they demonstrated last year at the World Cup. Therefore, it is possible to fight them.

Three teams are vying for the bronze medal: Russia(David Belyavsky, Nikita Nagorny, Nikolai Kuksenkov, Denis Ablyazin, Nikita Ignatiev) , Great Britain(Brynn Bevan, Louis Smith, Max Whitlock, Christian Thomas, Neil Wilson) and USA(Sam Mikulak, Jacob Dalton, Chris Brooks, Alexander Naddour, John Orozco).

Our team may well beat both the British and the Americans. Although we won the team championship at the European Championships, the British were missing their leader, Max Whitlock. Therefore, in Rio everything will be completely different. We need to be sure to make our programs without crashes and gross errors. Then we can get a medal. Because in the combination of complexity/purity, we are not inferior to our competitors for bronze in the fight. And it is the British who, as a rule, receive medals due to their stable performance.

Americans this year are clearly not in in better shape. There were injuries to the leaders, and some of the best gymnasts were out of shape. For example, Danil Leyva, who could have competed for medals on the uneven bars and horizontal bar, was not included in the team. And also Donell Whitenburg, who could potentially greatly help the team on the floor, vault and uneven bars. Moreover, on the vault and uneven bars with real claims to medals in certain events.

Absolute championship

At least ten gymnasts are vying for all-around medals. The level of competition is now very high. In addition, many gymnasts improved well by the Olympics. Including in the assessment for complexity.

Number one contender is, of course, a unique gymnast of all time Kohei Uchimura.

Kohei amazingly combines the execution of complex programs and the purity of execution of all elements. At this year's Japanese Championships, Kohei scores a difficulty score of 39.4 points (6.9 6.2 6.2 6.2 6.8 7.1). Moreover, on the horse we know that he has already performed difficulty 6.7, and on the horizontal bar on the day individual species demonstrated the program at 7.2. And yet the program failed. And the expected difficulty is 7.4 points.

The Ukrainian has very serious claims to gold Oleg Vernyaev.

Oleg, unfortunately, often gets overwhelmed by his nerves and fails to accomplish everything he plans. But maybe at this Olympics he will show everything he is capable of. Oleg also executes his programs very cleanly (albeit less cleanly than Uchimura). But the complexity of his programs is an order of magnitude higher - 40.5 (6.9 7.0 6.6 6.0 7.2 6.8). Is there enough difficulty margin of a point compared to the Japanese? Maybe that's enough. But in any case, this is a reserve for unforeseen cases.

Manric Larduet from Cuba already demonstrated at the 2015 World Championships that he is an excellent all-around athlete and continues to improve.

Last season, the program's total difficulty score was 39.2 (6.8 6.0 6.7 6.0 6.7 7.0). This season he is raising the difficulty on bars and high bar to 7.1. And there is information that he is preparing a jump of 6.4. Those. the potential base is at least 40.1. This is a very serious application for medals! But still, Manrik performs his programs far from very cleanly. In addition, breakdowns occur very often. He is a serious contender for medals, but his percentage of falling is too high.

Deng Shudi- bronze medalist at last year's World All-Around Championships.

Of course he is competing for a medal and for the Olympic Games. He has a decent set of difficult programs with a total of 39.7 points (6.9 6.3 6.4 6.0 7.3 6.8). How much he improved on the uneven bars, immediately raising his base by 0.2. But the quality of the combinations is not excellent. He needs to complete his all-around without making major mistakes in order to count on a medal.

Very serious medal contenders and Japanese all-around athletes Yusuke Tanaka and Ryohei Kato.

Only two athletes from the team will be able, based on their qualifying results, to qualify for a medal in the all-around. They execute their combinations cleanly. But their difficulty level is lower and, most importantly, the chance of failure is high.

Chinese Lin Chaopan also vying for a medal. He put together a complex set of programs for Rio for 39.4 (6.8 6.3 6.2 6.0 7.0 7.1). He executes his combinations quite cleanly and is quite capable of carrying them out without falls.

An Englishman also claims a medal Max Whitlock.

He deliberately skipped the European Championships in order to better prepare for Olympic Games. In terms of purity, of course, it cannot be compared with many competitors, and in terms of complexity it is inferior - approximately 38.8 points. But nevertheless, all this is very close in level to its competitors. And he is quite capable of scoring 90 points in the all-around.

Our David Belyavsky is a medal contender.

David also scored 90 points in the all-around. He has a very clean execution of his combinations. But the downside is that it is often plagued by unnecessary errors, and the complexity is still lower than that of its competitors. This means there is no room for error and nothing to leave “in reserve”.

U Nikolai Kuksenkov potentially less chance of a medal than David. But he seriously added to the difficulties on horseback. And often it is he who does not make gross mistakes in the all-around finals. But reliability is often of decisive importance.

American vying for all-around medal Sam Mikulak.

He can also score up to 90 points. at the last US Championship I scored a difficulty score of 38.5 (6.8 6.2 6.1 6.0 6.7 6.7). Moreover, on the crossbar he already performed a combination with 7.0 points. Sam can also perform consistently and cleanly enough to give him a chance at a medal.

Finals in individual events

Floor exercise

The number one contender for gold in floor exercise is Japanese Kenzo Shirai.

He practically never receives scores below 16 points in his favorite event (at the recent Japanese Championship the score was generally 16.650 points). This year I have perfectly polished my ultra-complex program with a base of 7.6 points! Just an amazing combination of complexity/quality. Kenzo performs unique screw combinations with elements of group F and E. But at the same time, he is one of the few in the world who jumps a double back somersault with three screws of group G! And at the 2015 Toyota Cup, for the first time in the world, he demonstrated an element of group H - a double back somersault with three pirouettes! The base has already been raised to 7.7 points, although in Rio it is unlikely that he will perform such a program. After all, at 7.6 his combination is well worked out.

Kohei Uchimura is one of the top favorites for a medal in the floor exercise.

At the last World Championships, he made a mistake in qualifying and did not compete for a medal in this event in the final. But his chances of winning a medal are extremely high. Kohei, of all the top-level gymnasts, probably performs his floor program the cleanest of all. Just amazing board landings and no bent legs on the rotors. The base of 6.9 is very high and the program is varied. There is a double back somersault with two pirouettes, as well as complex combinations of screws. Kohei is quite capable of scoring 16 points.

Denis Ablyazin of course also a contender for a medal.

He performs a combination with a base of 7.1-7.5 points. But alas, this season he has never once performed his most difficult combination from beginning to end. The score for difficulty is high, but the reliability is not very good... We can only hope that Denis will be able to show everything he is capable of in Rio. Perhaps it’s worth not making the maximum difficulty, or maybe he’ll take the risk. The program in 7.5 is simply unique. There is also a complex triple forward screw, a combination of 2.5 back pirouettes + 2.5 forward pirouettes, and a double back blanche with two screws, or a combination of a double forward screw with a double forward somersault. But we must remember that in 2014 Denis, with a base of 7.1, received a score of 15,750 points.

Nikita Nagorny won the European Championship with a score of 15.566 and a base of 6.8. Nikita will be able to compete for medals at the Olympics. The base may not be maximum, but the execution is at the proper level. The main thing is to perform without making gross mistakes. Nikita perfectly performs both double somersaults and combinations with screws.

Diego Hipolito can also become a very strong contender for medals.

Although the Olympics are taking place in Brazil, Diego may well not make it into the country’s national team. Apart from the floor and jump, he cannot help the team much and there is a high chance that he will not be taken. But if he does end up in the lineup, then with a base of 7.0 he scored a score of 15,700 points in 2014. Diego's program is very interesting. Includes a wide variety of double twist ties and complex screw connections.

Jacob Dalton from the USA is also vying for a medal.

Jacob's basic score is the lowest of all applicants - 6.7, but his technique score could well rise by 9 points. therefore the estimate of 15,700 is very realistic. At the 2014 World Championships he received a score of 15,600.

Max Whitlock another medal contender.

He decided to refuse to perform double somersaults, which, of course, can hardly be considered a highlight of the program. But the screw connections are complex, plus very original and complex Delasal circles with complications of groups D. As a result, the base is 6.8 and at the 2015 World Cup the final score is 15.566.

Thomas Gonzalez from Chile is also vying for medals.

Thomas raised his base to 7.0. and at the World Cup in Sao Paulo 2016 he scored 15,650. He performs double somersaults with screws very well, but he also excels at screw connections. In addition, its stability is very decent, which is not unimportant.

Horse mahi

The number one contender to win is Max Whitlock.

Max performs the most difficult program in the world with a base of 7.4 points. The quality of performance is of course far from ideal, although it turns all the circles quite quickly. But there is a lot of bending in the pelvis and not pulling out the toes. And yet, with such difficulty, he is the favorite in this event in the dispute for the podium. The judges judge him softly. For example, at the 2015 World Cup he scored 16.133 points.

Another Brit. Louis performs a combination with a base of 7.1-7.3 points. He makes his program dirty. Even more untied socks. But the judges, again, are very gentle with him. Therefore, at the 2015 World Cup, the score of 16.033 did not surprise anyone. In Rio it may increase, including in difficulty. He, like Whitlock, performs two G groups in the program. Or maybe also add one circle in the handstand with a return to the circles of group F, which will increase the base to 7.6. This is of course an assumption. But real, because He needs to take it precisely by complexity.

The Armenian athlete became the winner on pommel horse at the 2016 European Championships with a score of 15.366 points and a base of 6.9. But we remember that a year earlier at the World Championship he scored 15,500 with a base of 6.7. Accordingly, if you work on the quality of the new combination, you can score about 15,700, which is quite enough for a medal.

Oleg Vernyaev one of the purest combination performers on the pommel horse.

But at all major competitions, he usually breaks away from this projectile. But the chances of winning are no less than the British. The base is very high – 7.1. In addition, Oleg can fully perform the “Bushnari” element and add 0.2 to the difficulty. And with a base of 7.3, he will fight for gold with full confidence. With a technical grade of at least 8.8, this is realistic. You just need to do the program this time from start to finish...

This gymnast performs all circles in a bent or straight body position. Those. in terms of the technique of performing elements, he is not inferior to the Chinese masters. The technique score must be at least 9 points. And the base is very good - 7.0 points. But he has never yet performed his complex program from beginning to end without making a serious mistake. And yet, if performed successfully, Philip will become a very real contender for a medal.

Daniel Coran Baron.

This Mexican athlete executes his program very cleanly. Excellent circle technique and base in 7.0. But as a rule, he often falls off track or makes serious mistakes. In Rio he can qualify for a medal if he manages his combination.

Rings

Of course, at home, Arthur is the main contender for gold. His program is very difficult with 6.8 points. there are no back crosses, and therefore no main sources of errors. He generally does a great job with his combination. For example, at the test competition in Rio, he beat the current world champion Eleftherios Petrounias and scored a total of 15.866 points.

Eleftherios Petrounias.

Current world champion in rings. He performs all statics very cleanly, plus opens his brushes on airplanes. The base is 6.8 and the score is around 15.8 or 15.833, as was the case at the test competition in Rio. But compared to Zanetti, Eleftherios has a weak point - the dismount. Zanetti has a group D dismount with a double blanche with a twist, and the Greek has a double somersault in a tuck with two twists - a group E. The dismount is more risky and means there is a greater chance of making a mistake. True, maybe he wants to complicate his program even more? For example, lift up from a horizontal hang from behind into an airplane to group F and try to perform the dismount with a straight body. Then the base will increase to 7.0 and such a trump card will appear.

This Chinese gymnast is the best strength performer in the world. Simply amazingly clean execution of all elements. And his total base of 7.0 points is 0.2 higher than that of the Brazilian and Greek. But for the second time at the World Championships, his dismount has let him down. There is no way he will learn to perform it without making mistakes. If he copes with the dismount, then with a high probability he will be the champion (unless the judges decide otherwise, of course). At the 2015 Chinese Championships, with a base of 7.0 points, he scored 15.933 points.

And this Chinese is the record holder in the complexity of the combination - 7.2 points at the 2016 Li Ning Cup. The quality of performance is lower than that of all the above athletes. But such superiority in the database can play a positive role. At the 2015 World Championships, with a base of 7.0 points, he scored 15.733.

The French athlete is also in the running for medals. He executes his difficult combination cleanly with a base of 6.8 points. At the 2015 World Championships he scored 15.633. It should also be noted that he tried to perform the program with 6.9 points last year, but the quality of his performance was not always good.

Vahag performs the entire power part very well. There are mistakes in handstands. And so, with a base of 6.7 at the 2016 European Championship, he scored 15.633 per performance. This very loss in the database can play a cruel joke on him. It would be necessary to add complexity to the Olympics or make the combination almost perfect.

Denis also may well fight for medals, although he is not considered among the main favorites. He performs his power part very cleanly, which is somewhat simpler than that of his rivals. He gains a base of 6.8, including due to the most difficult dismount of group F - a double blank with two screws. This is the minus of his program, because... The more difficult the dismount, the higher the chance of making a mistake on it. And very often it is the error on the dismount that determines the final score and distribution of medals. At this year's European Championships he scored 15,633.

Let us also note this British athlete. He has the least chance of winning a medal of all the top athletes. But the base 6.9 is a very good basis for the fight for the podium. Courtney does the hardest one power element on the rings - a difficult exit to the return plane of group F. He makes it with a big mistake, due to which he loses about 0.3. But still, the judges can treat him kindly and then there is every chance of a medal.

Vault

This is the second year that a Korean gymnast has won the World Vault Championships. His two jumps are the most difficult - 6.4 points each. True, he performs a jump from a forward flip to a double forward somersault, bending over with a 180 turn, controversially. It is not clear in a bent or tucked position. But nevertheless, he is the main contender for gold. At the 2015 World Championships, he scored 15.450 in two jumps.

The reigning Olympic champion in jumping cannot escape from a series of injuries. It is difficult to say whether he will compete at the Olympics in Rio and, if so, in what form. If he recovers, he will become the main favorite for gold. Has two jumps of 6.4 points. Although the jump is essentially the same - a triple screw forward, but with different types coups.

Denis is our main medal hope for the jump in Rio. Two jumps with bases of 6.2 and 6.4. The Ri Se Gwang jump (Tsukahara double back somersault with screw) has already been mastered by many athletes. But the second jump of “Li Xiaopeng” is a screw jump. It looks varied and interesting. Unfortunately, it is extremely unstable. He can’t realize himself on jumps either. Let's hope he succeeds in both jumps in Rio.

Oleg deservedly won the 2016 European Championship. Two jumps of 6.0 points with clean execution and a final score of 15.399. But still, Oleg is significantly inferior in the complexity of the jumps to his competitors. Many people have two six-point jumps. You need to perform them almost flawlessly.

The gymnastics veteran may well add another medal to his track record. He has base jumps of 6.2 and 6.0. at the 2015 World Championships the score was 15,400 and this brought Marian silver. There is information that he is learning a new jump at the Olympics with a base of 6.4 points - from a forward flip to a double forward somersault with a 360 turn. The jump is unsuccessful in terms of landing, but raising the base immediately by 0.4 is a chance for a medal.

At this year's European Championships he performed excellently, performing two jumps of 6.0 points each. As a result, the score is 15,316. Again, six-point jumping does not guarantee medals at all.

Nikita won the 2015 European Championships with jumps of 6.0/5.6 points and a score of 15.099. But this year both jumps are already with a base of 6.0. And there is information that he is preparing for Rio and a jump of 6.4 points. Therefore, there are chances in the fight for the podium.

Igor jumps two jumps of 6.0 and there was an attempt to perform a jump of 6.4 points (albeit unsuccessful). If performed well, he is a medal contender. But often he still makes mistakes. At the 2014 World Championships, Igor won a silver medal with a score of 15.333 points.

Kenzo performs jumps of 6.2 and 5.6 points. Yurchenko is preparing a new jump for Rio with 3.5 screws at 6.4 points. Therefore, he also has a chance to fight for medals.

Bars

Gymnast with the most difficult program in the world - 7.4 and the current world champion. Last year at the World Championships he received a score of 16.216. In Rio, Yu Hao is one of the main contenders for medals. But such a complex combination is very difficult to complete without errors. Moreover, in his program there are practically only somersaults, which again increases the risk of making a mistake.

Could be a top contender for gold. Oleg executes his combination in 7.2 very cleanly. Unlike Yu Hao, Oleg does not have double somersaults, which increases the likelihood of performing a more reliable combination. The score does not fall below 16 points. At the 2015 World Cup the score was 16.066 and this is with a small blot.

I increased my difficulty from 7.1 to 7.3 by including the super-element “Tanaka” in the program (from a large back turn, a twist into emphasis on the hands of group F). Of course, he claims a medal if he copes with his combination. At the 2015 World Cup his rating was 15.966 (with a base of 7.1).

Oleg, with a base of 7.0 at the 2015 World Championships, received a score of 15.966. In 2016, at the World Cup in Anadia, he complicated his combination to 7.2, adding a very difficult element “Yamamuro” of the highest group “G”.

Manrick scored 15.733 at the World Championships last year with a base of 6.9. And this year, in the qualifying stage of the World Cup in Anadia, the base is already 7.1 and the score is 15,900. He has every chance of winning a medal, although he is somewhat behind the leaders.

At this year's European Championships, David became the champion on uneven bars, receiving a score of 16 points for the first time - 16.033. Yes, the base is only 6.9, which is not enough nowadays. But with such an excellent technique, there is a chance of a medal.

At this year's Japanese Championship, with a base of 6.8, he scores 16,050. Moreover, most likely he will further complicate the base to 7.0. This gymnast is extremely unstable in his performances, but can “shoot” in Rio.

Colombian with a very complex program and an original hanging dismount. At the World Cup in Sao Paulo, with a base of 6.9, he scores 15,800. He is preparing a new group F dismount, which will allow him to further raise the base by 0.2.

I improved a lot on uneven bars. Now the base is 7.0 and the performance is up to par. At this year's European Championships in the team competition he received a score of 15.966.

Lin Chaopan from China.

Although he is the third Chinese, he can get into the final due to his stability and purity. Base 7.0 and estimates sometimes go as high as 15,900. Although it’s not uncommon for there to be breakdowns.

Marcel Nguyen from Germany.

The most unlikely contender to win, but even now he has a good 7.0 program. And he also plans to complicate it for Rio, maybe up to 7.3. Therefore, we cannot discount it.

Crossbar

The current Olympic champion on the horizontal bar will try to become a two-time champion. Epke has not competed at major competitions all this year. This suggests that he is putting all his energy into preparing for Rio. Most likely he will perform a combination of 7.7 points. At the 2014 World Championships he received a score of 16.225. Of course, Epke can dare and go for the maximum difficulty of 7.9 points, performing a mind-blowing combination of four Kovacs flights in a row. But this is unlikely, because... he never tried it. But the 7.7 combination was tested many times at major competitions.

The current world champion is making his program even more complicated. Now the base is not 7.1, but 7.3 or 7.4. Kohei adds a combination of Kovacs' flights with the propeller bending over and in a tuck. And another combination of Adler with a 180 turn and the “Gaylord 2” flight. Even with the old program he received a score of 15.833. And with the new combination, the score will increase even more. Kohei simply executes his combination brilliantly in terms of purity. Everything is very stylish and elegant. In terms of purity there is nothing to compare with Epke.

Fabian is preparing hard for Rio. Restored to high quality his program with a base of 7.3 points, which he completed at the recent German Championship. This combination will most likely be complicated by him to his standard 7.4. After all, at the 2013 World Championships he received the highest score of 15.933. It should also be noted that he may well take a risk and connect his Kovacs, then the base will rise by 0.2. But these are of course our dreams.

Andreas Bretschneider.

This amazing gymnast has the most difficult flights in the world. He is preparing for Rio an absolutely incredible flight by Kovacs, bending over with two pirouettes. If this succeeds, the element will receive a difficulty group “I” that does not yet exist. Andreas performs his program cleanly and has every chance of winning a medal. He posted a program online that he wants to do in Rio with a base of 7.7 points.

I would like to wish him to cope with this program. And it should also be noted that with such incredible flights, it performs far from the most difficult turns. Add it in revolutions and the base will exceed 8 points. But this is a matter for the future, apparently.

He never manages to carry out his excellent program at major international competitions. And his bid for a medal is significant. Base 7.3 and execution around 9.0. With such an assessment, you can fight for gold.

A very serious medal contender. Base 7.5 and good performance. Although there are mistakes in the grips after Kovac’s flights. Nevertheless, in Rio he will be one of the main contenders for a medal.

Excellent program in 7.1. Cleanliness suffers, but in a certain situation this will be enough for a medal. This is exactly what happened at the World Championships last year. The estimate of 15,600 is not that low. Manrik gains the base due to combinations of Tkachev's flights and the most difficult dismount of group F - a double back somersault bending over with three screws.

An interesting program on the horizontal bar with a high difficulty of 7.3-7.4, but with very low quality its execution. The highlight of the program is Tkachev’s flight with a 360 turn. But it is this that, as a rule, is the main source of problems and falls. If he manages his combination, he can spoil the nerves of his opponents and fight for medals.
