We repair useful things: how to seal an air mattress at home, and what glue to use. How to seal an air mattress

Air mattresses are in high demand, and this is not surprising. They are convenient for picnics and trips into nature, for a good rest in country house, and they can also be used as furniture in the apartment.

Air mattresses are simple and unpretentious, taking up little space, especially when deflated. Unfortunately, they are quite easy to damage. Holes appear from long-term storage and improper use. But this does not mean that the mattress should be thrown away. You can resuscitate him without any serious effort on your own.

The Intex air mattress is an excellent alternative to standard, familiar furniture. But they require compliance with certain operating rules, otherwise the product will not last long. If you use an air mattress according to all the rules, it will perform its functions for quite a long time.

The mattress is inflated using pumps specially designed for this purpose. Many mattresses already have built-in inflatable pumps. Inflate the product car compressor it is forbidden.

There is no need to pump it with air; you need to constantly monitor the process. The mattress should be fairly elastic, but not too hard. Over-pumping will reduce service life. If you take the mattress to the beach or outdoors in hot weather, it is better to inflate it directly there.

The deflated mattress is stored clean and dry. The product needs to be washed warm water with the addition of soap, do not use various abrasives.

To keep the air mattress intact, do not jump on it. You should also pay attention that there are no piercing or cutting objects near the mattress that could damage the product. You need to be careful if you have pets, because they can chew or scratch the mattress.

How and how to seal an air mattress

A damaged mattress can be repaired at home using simple and available funds. Mattress manufacturers Intex include a kit for home repairs. This is very pleasing; there is no need to rack your brains about where the repairs are being done, how much it will cost, and whether it makes sense. The kit includes glue, patches and film.

You can revive the product not only at home, but also in nature, in the country. It’s not entirely pleasant to go on a picnic and lose your sleeping place due to a puncture. If air passes through the seam, you can temporarily treat the seam with superglue and repair the mattress in a more comfortable environment.

How to seal an Intex mattress at home? When faced with a cut on such a product for the first time, there are no problems with what to seal it with - there is a kit carefully assembled by the manufacturer. However, if the trouble recurs after some time, there will simply be no materials left.

To prevent the patch from coming off, you need to thoroughly clean the damaged surface of dirt. It should be free of lint, dust, and animal hair. Suitable as a cleansing agent common remedy varnish remover or solvent.

After applying the product, wait a little, and then use something hard to remove lint and other dirt. When sealing an Intex mattress, you need to degrease with alcohol both the patch and the surface on which it will be applied.

Intex mattress repair at home

Further repairs depend on the nature of the damage. You can actually seal minor holes from cuts and punctures yourself. If the seam of the mattress is seriously damaged or the partition inside is torn off, it is better to turn to professional craftsmen, since such problems require special skills. Repair of Intex air mattresses is usually carried out in the same organization where the purchase was made.

For self-recovery mattress, first find the place where it was damaged. It's not as easy as it might seem. If such a possibility exists, the product is inflated in absolute silence. The place where the hole appeared will emit a hissing sound, this is where the air escapes freely.

It doesn't take any special skills to seal an air mattress and extend its life. It is worth mentioning that not all products make sense to repair. You can figure out whether a product cannot be disposed of if damaged, even at the time of purchase. Air mattresses that are worth trying to seal are equipped with a patch and rubber glue. If there is no repair kit, it is most likely easier to throw away the product.

Features of repairing bathing mattresses

Mattresses for relaxing on the shore and water are more often damaged than sleeping mattresses when they come across a sharp stone, a random splinter - any sharp object. At the same time, a repair kit is rarely included with them - this means that the mattress cannot be repaired. You should pay attention to its design.

Products consisting of two or more independent sections can be glued together. A puncture in a separate part causes inconvenience, but has virtually no effect on safety when swimming. It can and should be repaired. It is better to avoid swimming on a sealed single-section mattress.

These recommendations apply to a single injury. If a multi-section mattress is damaged a second time, and in another section, use on water is not recommended. The same thing happens if there are punctures in one section, but from different sides (bottom and top), since in water the mattress endures strong loads - air pressure from the inside, water pressure from below and from the sides, and body pressure from above.

For repairs you will need:

  • a piece of material similar in quality to a mattress;
  • waterproof glue;
  • degreaser, solvent, acetone, alcohol or high octane gasoline;
  • a heavy object with a flat surface - a press.

Important! The gluing area will always be a risk area. Do not swim far on a repaired mattress and do not load it beyond the limit specified by the manufacturer in the instructions.

How to determine the puncture site: two ways

Repair of air mattresses (of any type) begins with determining the location of the damage. It is not difficult to find cuts or tears along the seam; it is more difficult to see a pinhole. For cyclists and owners inflatable boats this problem is well known.

Method with water:

  1. The balloon filled with air is lowered into the water and submerged.
  2. Air begins to escape from the damaged area, bubbles rising in a stream - this is an indicator of the puncture site.
  3. In order not to lose the detected defect, it is first pinched with a finger and then outlined with chalk, soap or a contrasting alcohol marker.

The disadvantage of this method is that you have to wet the product and then dry it thoroughly for further gluing. This is especially inconvenient when repairing velor mattresses - the silky surface takes a long time to dry.

Testing without water

If there is no container to put the mattress in or there is no time to wait for it to dry, then the puncture is found by sound. The product is arbitrarily squeezed and listened to. Coming out of a small hole, the air hisses.

You need to be careful not to make mistakes. It is more convenient if the mattress is not inflated tightly - then the dense part is moved around the perimeter in order to more accurately determine where the quiet hiss is coming from. The method is better suited than others for coated products, but is the least accurate.

Another method is using soap. The product will have to be moistened, but not as much as when lowered into water. The point is to inflate the mattress and lather the approximate puncture site. There is no need to press: if there is damage, the air will come out of it, inflating the bubble. It is from this that the future area for the patch is identified.

Advice! If you have absolutely nothing to circle the puncture with, insert a match or a toothpick with a cut tip into it.

Several ways to repair air mattresses

To firmly glue an air mattress, be sure to follow five steps:

  1. Cleaning up.
  2. Degreasing.
  3. Drying.
  4. Primary treatment with adhesive composition.
  5. Bonding with placement under the load within 24 hours.

Important! The patch material must be identical to the mattress or as close as possible in quality and composition.

Ideally, a double patch is installed - with the inner and outside, especially if we are talking about a cut or a strong tear. For a small puncture, external sealing is sufficient. In any case, you need to make sure that the glue does not leak inside the mattress - otherwise it will stick together and become inflamed. best case scenario inconvenient, and at worst, unsuitable for use. Therefore, the glue is applied in a thin, uniform layer, not reaching the edge of the patch 1-2 mm.

Stripping is the complete removal of everything that will interfere with the adhesion of the glue and the base. Smooth products are washed thoroughly, but velor types Intex, you will have to free it from lint. To do this, use fine-grain sandpaper; you can use a knife, razor, etc. with caution.

Urgent repair of minor damage using improvised means

Mounting tape is used as an “ambulance” for a damaged watercraft. Its advantage over other products of similar purpose lies in its tight fit and elasticity. The method is convenient in that it can be used both at home and in hiking conditions, and there is no need to wait until the first layer of glue dries. The disadvantage of this method is less strength and durability and the inability to repair a strong tear. Scotch tape is good against pinholes and small cuts.

Interesting fact
Gray tape with a stretching effect is used by plumbers to temporarily fix leaks. And insulation made from such material lasts for years.

Mode of application:

  1. Clean and degrease the damaged area.
  2. Let dry.
  3. Seal with tape. A long cut is preferably made in two layers: the first - along, the second - across.

About the same specifications has white insulating tape for electrical wires. It is inferior to “rubber” tape in terms of width and stickiness. It is suitable for temporary repair of a pinhole puncture in a sleeping mattress - but it must be secured with two cross-sections.

Repairing major damage

Repair a torn mattress at the seams using adhesive tapes impractical: the pressure on the side elements is too great. In this case, it is necessary to install a patch.

Advice! The encircling rigid frame reduces the deformation of the mattress, making it more comfortable to sleep on. And this same element is a guarantee that after serious repairs the product will still serve.

Possible difficulties:

  1. A model in which the side elements are not an addition, but part of the inflatable balloon, is inconvenient for repair at home.
  2. Reliable and tight coupling ensures uniform load pressure. To do this, it must be flat at the bottom, heavy and grip every millimeter of the patch. In case of significant damage, selecting the required cargo dimensions is difficult, but necessary. If such a pressing tool is not found, but will be used different weights and the shape of available materials, then some areas will allow air to pass through after the first use of the mattress.

To repair a mattress along the seam you will need:

  • two smooth thin slats;
  • clamps;
  • rubber-based adhesive;
  • acetone;
  • rectangular patch.

Procedure:

  1. The area around the damage is treated with acetone.
  2. After it evaporates, glue is applied in a thin, even layer.
  3. The same preparatory work carried out with two patches.
  4. Leave the lubricated parts in air (the time for this stage is individual for each type of glue, it is indicated on the tube).
  5. Carefully insert the inner patch and align its middle with the center of the damage.
  6. The second patch is applied on top and smoothed thoroughly. After connecting the parts, there should be no air bubbles left between them.
  7. From below and above the glued seam, on top of the patch, slats are applied and secured with clamps.
  8. Leave the mattress in a vice for a day or half a day.

Air mattresses are convenient for relaxing on the water or as guest beds. If the product is damaged and begins to leak air, you should try to seal it. The procedure does not require any special skills, just accuracy and time. A repaired single-section mattress will only last on the shore; if there are several sections, it is quite acceptable to swim on it.

Inflatable PVC mattress or air bed useful thing, both for outdoor recreation and as a spare sleeping area for overnight guests, and sometimes even for your loved one. But besides convenience, there is also a drawback to Intex or any other air mattresses: they must be handled carefully to avoid punctures, cuts or tears, and this is true for both the velor top of the mattress and the base made of polyvinyl chloride. A puncture or rupture is sometimes noticed when waking up prematurely from the body touching the floor of the room. Or if you fail to inflate the mattress tightly after storage. Such an unexpected event immediately causes confusion: what to do, how to repair, how to seal, or how to fix an air mattress with your own hands? Where can I find the patch? What glue should I use? You don't have to look for a workshop! You can seal an air mattress with your own hands.

How to seal an air mattress with your own hands

First of all, you need to prepare repair kit: PVC glue, patches, sandpaper (fine grain), degreasing agent. Glue and patches come with each mattress, it’s good if they are preserved. Unused, the included tube of glue can retain its contents without drying out for 2-3 years. How to properly repair and what is the best way to glue patches onto an air mattress? If the glue is lost or dried out, then it will be replaced, for example, with polyurethane glue “Crystal” from the “Moment” series. You can also use professional glue. PVC mattress shell - glues very well and quickly with polyurethane shoe glue (desmacol, bokikol, sar, etc.). “Crystal” also belongs to polyurethane, but it is more difficult to work with, since, unlike shoe glue, the glue does not allow thermal activation of the adhesive film and, accordingly, requires more time before the mattress can be used. It won't happen quickly. You can get around this drawback by violating the gluing technology described by the manufacturer and fulfilling certain conditions, namely: apply glue to both surfaces and dry completely, for about 20 - 30 minutes, then either “activate” the adhesive film by applying 5- 7% solution of glue in acetone or ethyl acetate, or by applying a thin layer of glue and drying until it is tack-free - when the glue stops being liquid, and putting the surfaces together, squeeze firmly. For gluing, compression force is more important than time under pressure. This scheme allows you to use the product an hour after gluing, but requires skill to “catch” the active phase of the glue.

If there are no patches, some inexpensive inflatable toy for children from PVC material. We cut out a patch in the shape of a circle from the toy. Sandpaper can be purchased at a hardware store. Degreaser - alcohol or gasoline.

We are looking for a hole, hole, puncture, tear or torn seam in the mattress. We need to be optimistic and patient. I suggest the following simple instructions for finding a puncture and repairing an air mattress:

1. In a quiet room or room, inflate the mattress as tightly as reasonably possible.

2. We listen and try to localize the leak area by the sound of escaping air.

3. Carefully examine the leak area, for example, slowly moving your palm at a distance of 1-3 cm from the surface to localize the hole hole. A thin stream of air will “cool” your palm.

4. If the hole or holes are noticeable, mark them ballpoint pen or a felt-tip pen.

5. Very small holes are sometimes difficult to notice, then you will need to use a soap solution, the place of the bubble is also marked.

6. For INTEX mattresses, the sore spot is the valve, so the release of air is not always the result of a puncture; the valve is also checked with soap and water. Attention! Do not check the valve of the built-in pump this way or dry it thoroughly before turning it on.

6. Patch is prepared required size, the edge of the patch should be no closer than 15 mm from the hole.

7. The repair area is drained and cleaned sandpaper, the patch is also cleaned. You can try to clean the fleecy surface with a cotton swab soaked in acetone.

8. Apply the patch to the glued area and trace its contours on the mattress, this will allow you to carefully apply the glue.

9. Degrease the gluing area and blow the air out of the mattress. To speed things up, you can rearrange the hose on the pump or use a vacuum cleaner.

10. Apply glue to the marked place on the mattress and to the patch.

Place for glue

11. After applying the Crystal glue, pause for 5-10 minutes and strongly compress the patch and the surface of the mattress. Of course, the surface of the mattress is not always smooth. The compression density when gluing can be ensured in the following way: We try to lay the canvas at the gluing site on a flat surface. Quickly, without forming bubbles, roll the patch onto the gluing site, place a piece of polyethylene on the patch, then a piece of foam film 3-5 mm thick, slightly more sizes patches, and a weight is placed on top. It is better to work out this sequence of actions before gluing. After installing the weight, you need to press firmly on the gluing area for 5-15 seconds and leave the gluing alone for several hours.

Pie for patch

12. If everything is glued well and there is no other damage, then inflate the mattress after 24 hours and use it.

Today, air mattresses are in great demand - comfortable, compact for storage, and, if necessary, easily converted into a sleeping place at home or on vacation. The lifespan of any inflatable product depends on its quality and how it is used.

Of course, if a mattress or air bed is used as a trampoline, then we can hardly talk about a long service life. But even if you find punctures or some other damage, you shouldn’t despair: you can repair air mattresses at home. You just need to arm yourself with a special kit and carefully study the instructions.

The tips given below will tell you how you can quickly bring an inflatable product “back to life” at home without damaging it even more. In some cases, such repairs will only be temporary and you will have to contact a specialized workshop, but often home renovation

turns out to be very high quality.

  • The location of the damage is not always immediately determined; sometimes the puncture is almost invisible and it is necessary to carefully approach the detection of air leaks.
  • Conduct a thorough inspection of the mattress.
  • Place the back of your hand on the suspected site of injury - you can feel a current of cold air.
  • Partial immersion of the product in water will also indicate the location of the air leak - the appearance of bubbles will immediately indicate where the damage is.
  • Damage is clearly visible when treated with a soap solution. Using a sponge or just a piece of foam rubber, you should soap the entire mattress, after inflating it. Even the smallest punctures will show up as air bubbles.

Mark any damaged areas with chalk or a piece of soap. Deflate the mattress, clean it from dirt, dry it well (not near the radiator!). When a person tries to repair a mattress on his own, there are often advisers who recommend pouring water inside the mattress to locate the puncture site. This will be quite effective, but it will hardly be possible to use the thing in the future:

Not only will unsightly whitish stains form, but the fabric itself will remain damp. You probably won’t want to sleep on such a mattress.

  • Home repair of air mattresses
  • For DIY repairs, it’s easier to use a repair kit for similar products. For example, Intex (59632).

Absolutely do not resort to using any superglue!

If the damage is minor, on a flat surface

If gluing is carried out with dismacol, then it should be applied by thinly spreading it over the surface of the patch; Let it dry for about 10 minutes, then apply a layer of glue again.

Now you should dry it to the state of adhesive tape, stick it and smooth it well. You can use a hairdryer for drying, just do not turn it on with hot air.

If the damage on a flat surface is large enough In case of significant damage, the best way out is to contact a workshop where repairs are carried out by specialists using special devices

and adhesives.

If this is not possible, you can do everything at home. And then you should act in the same order as when puncturing. But at the same time, cut the patch so that it protrudes a centimeter on all sides of the gap.

How to use the product after repair?

Eliminating punctures and small cuts will not in any way affect the process of further use. Despite the size and material from which the mattress is made, the product will last a long time.

If necessary, repairs to air mattresses can be done more than once. Even if there was significant damage to the flat surface of the mattress, if the repair work was carried out in compliance with all recommendations, the consumer properties of the product will remain for a long time.

If the edge of the seam is slightly damaged

If there is slight damage along the edge of the seam, to detect it, it is enough to inflate the mattress halfway. Having found a leak, you should fill the damaged area with glue and let it dry, then repeat the operation until the air bubbles disappear. After a couple of hours, you can use the mattress, but there are misfires when it is not immediately possible to correct the damage.

But, if there is damage of more than one centimeter, you need to contact a specialized workshop.

If there is a small puncture or mini-tear in the seam

For repairs you will need a tube of polyurethane glue, a piece of leather or PVC.

Now you should apply the patch to the surface of the mattress, press and hold for a while, smoothing the edges. To speed up the process, you should not use lighters, burning matches, irons, etc. - you can only ruin everything. You can use a hairdryer with caution, without turning it on the maximum setting. After everything, leave the mattress for an hour. Then inflate to check. There should be no trace left of the punctures, although the leak at the rupture site will most likely not be completely eliminated.

If the mattress continues to deflate, you need to be patient and do everything again, from beginning (searching for damage) to end. If even then you do not get the desired result, repeat until the mattress stops deflating.

If the seam along the edge is damaged by more than 0.5 cm

In this case, there is a direct route to an air mattress repair shop. You won’t be able to repair the breaks on your own, but having a professional do such “after-repair repairs” will be more difficult and will cost more later.

Could the valve cause an air leak?

Often the fault is with the valves when the mattress begins to deflate. This can be easily verified. You need to prepare a soap solution and a brush or sponge. Inflate the mattress and close the valve, then apply soap foam thickly around the valve. If air bubbles do not appear, then there is no need to blame the valve - the reason is different. If bubbles appear, then you need to contact a specialist. And you should not try to trim the surface of the valve with sandpaper - this will not give anything.

Unfortunately, air mattresses, sofas and beds often fail. But don't rush to throw them away. And in many cases it is not necessary to contact the service center. Most problems can be fixed quickly on our own. We learn to install patches, repair pumps and valves.

What goes wrong with inflatable furniture?

Valve, built-in pump, shell- these are three “pain points”. The valve may become leaky over time. You can try to repair it yourself, without contacting “inflatable furniture repair.” The pump fails when the brushes that rotate the commutator wear out. And this problem is also fixable. Punctures and ruptures of the shell are the most common problem. To fix it you need to buy a repair kit.
