Do-it-yourself trimmer shaft repair. Repairing lawn mowers with your own hands: breakdowns and methods for eliminating them

At first glance, a simple device for mowing grass using a two-stroke engine has fine tuning. Repairing a lawn mower should be entrusted to a specialist or you should study the equipment yourself using the instruction manual. Maintenance Braids need to be maintained. Lubricating the gearbox, replacing the fishing line, and sharpening the teeth can be done on your own.

Petrol mower malfunctions and how to fix them

Any type of lawn mower has a hollow rod in which a connecting cable is placed between the engine shaft and the lower gearbox, which transmits rotation to the working element with cutting tool. At the top there is a carburetor and a motor, at the bottom there is a gearbox and a working tool covered with a casing. In the middle part there is a transverse handle in which control buttons are located. To unload the hands, there is an unloading belt that holds the bar with the operator’s torso.

When choosing a lawn mower, it is preferable to have a device with a two-stroke engine rather than a four-stroke one. A two-stroke engine is more maneuverable and easier to repair. With a four-stroke unit, the vibration level is lower.

They follow this, repairing a lawn mower consists of troubleshooting,

  • the engine does not start,
  • the cutting mechanism does not gain momentum,
  • the engine stalls
  • the gearbox gets hot,
  • an extraneous knock is heard, strong vibration of the rod.

Before troubleshooting, you need to diagnose and identify the non-working unit.

It is important to know the lubrication points of the tool. Regular care and cleaning of the device after use will extend its service life. Before work, you need to tighten the mounting bolts, prepare fuel and fill the tank.

Chainsaw engine does not start

If the mechanism does not start, it stalls immediately, check sequentially:

  • is there fuel in the tank,
  • spark plug serviceability,
  • cleanliness of the air and fuel filters,
  • cleanliness of the breather and exhaust channel.

It is necessary to refill with a freshly prepared mixture based on AI-92; the oil is injected for precise dosage with a medical syringe. This will help avoid expensive repairs chainsaws.

You need to make sure that the spark plug is working and produces a spark when it comes into contact with the body. In this case, it is necessary to dry the spark plug channel, clean and dry the part itself. You can change the candle, but the channel still needs to be dried for 40 minutes. Check serviceability high voltage wire, there may not always be contact. A malfunction in the ignition unit when repairing a lawn mower cannot be repaired with your own hands.

If the engine does not stall when the air filter is removed, this is the reason - replacement or cleaning is required. The fuel filter is replaced with great care. After checking the cleanliness of the breather, remove the muffler mesh and clean the exhaust channel.

The next step will be carburetor repair, where you will have to find the fault and fix it, taking into account the tiny size of the parts. If the simplest operations do not bring results, in order not to disrupt the fine tuning of the system, it is better to entrust the repair to a specialist. Repair and lubrication of the lawn mower gearbox

The role of the gearbox is to transmit torque from the motor shaft to the cutting tool through 2 toothed gears with different numbers of teeth. Torque is transmitted at an angle of 30. Lower speed cutting disc 1.4 times less engine speed. Gears must be clean and lubricated. There is a hole under the screw on top to supply oil to the teeth.

The lawnmower gearbox is lubricated at least once a season. If the work is intensive or there is extraneous noise in the lower unit, it is necessary to lubricate more often.

First, you should clear the area where the plug covers the hole from soil and grass. Unscrew the plug with the appropriate tool, it is included with the saw. We use grease from a tube. Select either a native lubricant from the manufacturer, or well-known high-quality compositions, such as Oleo-Mas, Litol-24, Azmol 158. Open the protective layer of the tube and lay the instrument on its side. Slowly rotating the knife, squeeze the lubricant into the gear housing. The gears, turning, spread the composition with teeth over the entire surface. You can also add lubricant using a special syringe.

Lack or a large number of lubricants can cause the gearbox to heat up. An audible knock and play indicate the destruction of the bearing or the ingress of dirt due to damage to the anthers. Bearings must be replaced using a puller, without using the heating method.

If the gearbox wobbles and moves along the rod, it is necessary to replace the housing, or temporarily tighten the assembly with a clamp to secure it to the pipe. If the knife stops rotating, it means that the gears are not engaging - the teeth have become worn out or chipped. The pair will need to be replaced with complete disassembly of the unit.

Disassembly of the gearbox with removal of the shaft and bearing units cannot be carried out using heat. When heated, the metal loses its strength qualities and subsequently the unit becomes unreliable. To remove bearings, use a puller.

When replacing a gearbox, it is necessary to select a new unit, guided by:

  • pipe diameter,
  • drive shaft diameter,
  • cross-section of the drive shaft,
  • method of securing protection

Caring for cutting units of lawn mowers

The saw set becomes dull or wears out over time. Working with the tool becomes stressful, the load increases, and the quality of the swath deteriorates. Metal saw blades sharpen, plastic ones are replaced.

If the cutting tool is a fishing line, it gradually wears out, and a new material. The principle of operation of a cutter with a fishing line is the gradual unwinding of the reel under the influence of centrifugal force. When in contact with grass, the fishing line wears out and is fed out of the reel gradually. Special winding is needed so that two cutting elements come out at the same time and do not get confused with each other.

The figure shows how to correctly wind the fishing line onto the reel of a lawn mower. Before winding a new fishing line you need to:

  • unscrew the nozzle, carefully remove the cover, holding the spring with your hand,
  • remove pieces of old fishing line from the reel,
  • measure 5 meters of new string and fold it in half,
  • there are guides in the reel for 2 ends, hook the middle part to the notch and wind in the direction of the arrows for each half of the string,
  • pass the remaining 20 cm through special recesses at opposite ends of the coil,
  • install the spring and washers, bring the ends of the fishing line out, close the drum with a lid.

To better understand how to change the fishing line on a lawn mower, watch the video.

Replacing fishing line in the trimmer head of a lawn mower - video

(petrol mower gearbox, lawn mower gearbox) is a mechanical device located at the bottom of the trimmer (motor mower or lawn mower) and is designed to transmit torque from the engine to the cutting equipment at an angle of 30°, ensuring that the cutting equipment operates in a horizontal plane (parallel to the ground surface) , as well as reducing the angular speed and increasing the torque of the output shaft in a ratio of 1:1.40 (for example, if the engine runs at 12 thousand rpm, the knife will rotate at a speed of 8.6 thousand rpm).

Possible malfunctions of the trimmer gearbox, lawn mower gearbox, and lawn mower gearbox

  1. Malfunction— the trimmer gearbox gets very hot.
    The malfunction of the lawn mower gearbox and the lawn mower gearbox is the same as that of the trimmer.
    Causes malfunctions - lack of lubrication in the gearbox, unsuitable lubrication or lack of running-in of the new gearbox (when the parts have not yet been ground in).
    Repair trimmer with your own hands - add lubricant to the trimmer gearbox, replace the lubricant or run the trimmer in a gentle mode (use three tanks of fuel under light loads and with periodic stops for natural cooling). .
  2. Malfunction trimmer - knocking, play and jamming when rotating the shaft of the trimmer gearbox, the gearbox of a brush cutter or the gearbox of a lawn mower.
    Causes malfunctions - destruction of one of the bearings in the trimmer gearbox due to lack of lubrication in the gearbox, inappropriate lubrication, harsh operating conditions of the trimmer, damage to the boots on the bearings during their installation.
    Repair trimmer with your own hands - order bearings from the dealer and replace them (there are two or three sealed bearings) - for more details, see below “How to disassemble the trimmer gearbox / lawn mower gearbox / brush cutter gearbox”.
  3. Malfunction trimmer - the gearbox wobbles or falls off the trimmer pipe.
    Causes malfunctions - mechanical damage to the gearbox housing - for example, if a piece of the housing breaks off due to a strong blow with a knife on heavy metal or stone (or if the gearbox housing is damaged, for example, with a hammer during repairs).
    Repair trimmer with your own hands - replace the gearbox housing. Or, if a small piece breaks off, make a metal clamp to tighten the fracture site.
    Repairing a lawn mower yourself is similar to repairing a trimmer.
  4. Malfunction trimmer - the reducer on the pipe is not clamped. As practice shows, the gearbox does not fly off the pipe at all, but theoretically, it can fly off the pipe along with the rotating knife.
    The malfunction of a lawn mower is similar to a trimmer.
    Causes trimmer malfunctions - wear of the gearbox seat on the pipe (the aluminum of the pipe under the gearbox is worn out).
    Repair trimmer with your own hands - wrap fabric tape around the pipe under the gearbox or replace the pipe.
  5. Malfunction trimmer - the trimmer blade has stopped rotating completely (with a characteristic metallic sound) or stops rotating under high loads (with a hard gnawing sound).
    Causes malfunction - wear of the teeth on the bevel gear in the trimmer gearbox.
    Repair trimmer with your own hands - replace the pairs of bevel gears (a pair is replaced) in the gearbox - for more details, see below “How to disassemble the trimmer gearbox / lawn mower gearbox / brush cutter gearbox”.

How to disassemble the trimmer gearbox

In order to disassemble the trimmer gearbox, it is necessary.

  • Remove the gearbox from the pipe by loosening the two coupling bolts under the gearbox.
  • Wash the gearbox with a brush, for example, in gasoline without oil and dry.
  • Using round-nose pliers, bring the ends of the retaining ring together and remove it.
  • Remove the second retaining ring in the same way.
  • Then you need to strongly heat the housing of the trimmer gearbox, brush cutter gearbox or lawn mower gearbox with an industrial (technical) hairdryer at an outlet air temperature of 600°C.
  • Then with strong blows wooden block along the top of the gearbox housing, knock out the driven shaft with the bearing and gear (first try knocking out the bearings without heating). You only need to hit with a wooden block, since a metal hammer, for example, can break the body.
  • In the same way, we remove the drive shaft with the bearing and gear (we strongly heat the place where the bearings sit and hit the housing coaxially with the shaft with a wooden block, knocking out the shaft with two bearings and the gear). How to disassemble a trimmer gearbox, a lawn mower gearbox and a brush cutter gearbox. To avoid heating, you can try using a shooter.

Trimmer gear assembly produced ok reverse disassembly(assembly after purchase and replacement of failed spare parts). Assembling the gearbox is much easier than disassembling it - everything is assembled, literally, with your fingers. Sometimes you need to lightly tap something, install circlips and check whether the driven shaft rotates by hand.

If you decide replace trimmer gearbox If it is not original, then in a new gearbox you should pay attention to the diameter of the pipe for which the gearbox is intended (usually 25.4 mm or 26 mm), the diameter of the drive shaft (usually 8 mm), the square size of the drive shaft (usually 5 mm or a star on 9 teeth) and fastening the protection to the gearbox, as well as to the nut (with a left-hand thread, usually M10x1.25).

How to lubricate a trimmer gearbox / brush cutter gearbox / brush cutter gearbox

The trimmer gearbox should be lubricated at least once a year, but it is better to check the lubrication after every 20-25 hours of operation or when gear noise appears in the brush cutter gearbox. How to lubricate the gearbox of a lawn mower. To lubricate, you first need to clear the plug itself and the area around the plug from soil and grass residues so that they do not get inside the gearbox when filling it with lubricant. Then you need to unscrew the plug to lubricate the gearbox (for example, for an ECHO lawn trimmer it is a key set to “17”, for a Husqvarna it is a hexagonal key set to “5”, for a Chinese lawn mower it is a key set to “12”). It is better to use lubricant from the same manufacturer as your trimmer or simply from world-famous brands such as Oleo-Mac, STIHL, Husqvarna, Oregon, LiquiMoly, Litol-24, Azmol 158, etc., as long as it is not a fake ! The tube, if new, is unsealed by removing the cork with your fingers or punching reverse side the cap has a jumper in the tube spout. Then we place the trimmer on its left side, and rotating the knife with one hand (so that the gears spread the lubricant and the entire volume is filled), with the other hand we slowly squeeze the lubricant out of the tube through the hole into the gear housing until it is completely filled. Then we twist and clamp the plug of the trimmer gearbox and the plug of the tube with lubricant. If the lubricant is not in a tube (but, for example, in a jar), take a medical syringe without a needle, remove the piston, fill the syringe with lubricant (you can use your finger), and then fill the trimmer gearbox with lubricant from the syringe.

A personal plot will not have a neat appearance if bushes have grown in its gardening area and the grass has formed a thick cover. This indicates the neglect of the site by the owner, who does nothing even to mow the lawns. But mowing the grass is the easiest task on the site, because various equipment has been created for this work.

The advantage of a gasoline trimmer

For example, a trimmer is a very convenient and productive, lightweight, reliable and practical device to use. It can be electric, lightweight, or gasoline, with high performance. Gasoline ones are more common, as they have a fuel tank and can operate at a distance from electrical communications. Perhaps the only disadvantage of a gasoline trimmer is that, like any equipment, it periodically breaks down. But in this matter it has an advantage, since for people who understand a little about technology, it is possible with their own hands.

Troubleshooting

If the trimmer stops starting, then you should not immediately sound the alarm and contact service center, since the cause of inoperability can be easily eliminated. Any DIY repair of gasoline trimmers begins with checking for the presence of a spark, without which it is impossible to ignite the fuel in the combustion chamber. If there is no spark, then the problem is either in the spark plug or in the ignition itself. An exception is in cases where the spark plug is filled with fuel mixture when the fuel is overfilled above the required level. In this case, you just need to wipe it dry and the treasured spark will appear.

It will also indicate that there is no fuel supply. If it is dry and light brown in color, in this case, repairing a gasoline trimmer with your own hands will involve adjusting the fuel pumping or All these reasons can be easily eliminated, the main thing is that the engine itself works properly. But if the cause of the malfunction is still hidden in the engine itself, then it is recommended to contact a service center due to the complexity of repairs. But for people who can hold a screwdriver in their hands, nothing is impossible. In most cases, trimmer ends successfully.

Briefly about engine repair

Engine problems begin after a few years correct operation from wear of components or suddenly due to improper use of the trimmer. Unfortunately, people regret improper operation when they repair gasoline trimmers with their own hands after an engine breakdown. And this happens in cases where the dosage of oil in the fuel is not observed or the device operates to the point of terrible overheating. Overheating may cause the crankshaft to jam, the piston rings to break, or the piston to completely burn out. In order to perform a piston inspection, it is enough to remove the cylinder head, from under which a piston will appear, clearly reflecting the condition of its work surface. The rings themselves do not protrude from the cylinder, so it does not matter whether you change the rings or the piston, in both cases you will have to remove the cylinder. When repairing gasoline trimmers with your own hands, it is worth remembering that they are fragile and can easily break if you lack experience. Installing the piston itself on the crankshaft is not too difficult. The main thing when repairing an engine is to assemble everything the same way as it was before disassembly, and then everything will work again.

Very often, complaints from owners of gasoline trimmers are related to various types of carburetor malfunctions. Of course, in this case, it is best to seek help from specialists in this field, for whom repairing carburetors of gasoline trimmers is an integral part of their profession. However, if you are still familiar with the basic principles of how a trimmer carburetor works, you can try to figure out the problem yourself so as not to overpay for service, since sometimes the breakdown can be really minor.

This article is intended to help you deal with the problem.

The first step is to inspect the carburetor as a whole and find out if there is any fuel leakage.

If it turns out that there are no problems with the fuel, you need to remove the carburetor from the engine and check the condition of the gasket located next to the carburetor.

If no malfunctions are observed here, you can try checking the carburetor for the degree of tightness.

For this you can purchase special device, which is part of the repair tool kits for repairing the carburetor of brush cutters and is a special pressure gauge, which, in fact, checks the tightness.

If you don’t want to spend money on purchasing it, you can use a regular medical tonometer, on which you just need to change the pressure gauge.

When using this device, pay attention to the indication.

If the pressure does not drop and remains the same for a long time, you can rest assured, as this indicates that the carburetor is tight.

If the pressure begins to decrease after a certain time, then there are still problems.

They may be associated with damage to any carburetor parts.

Before running to the nearest repair shop or specialized store selling trimmers and spare parts, try to figure out the problem yourself. Sorry for the banality, but the carburetor of a lawn mower is not spaceship extraterrestrial civilization, and it is quite possible to repair it yourself. To be confident in your actions, read step by step instructions presented in this article.

Step-by-step instructions for repairing a lawn mower carburetor

Disassembling the carburetor

A visual inspection of the carburetor will help identify fuel leaks and air intake, but the main reasons for device failure lie internally. Therefore, in order to determine and, most importantly, correct the breakdown, the carburetor must be disassembled.

It doesn’t take much effort to disassemble the carburetor of a lawn mower.

Just unscrew the four screws on one side

and two on the other. This can be done using the usual Phillips screwdriver. Carefully unscrew the screws and put them aside. They may be needed during assembly. It is advisable to cover the table with a white cloth before disassembling so that everything can be seen, even the smallest parts that may fall out during disassembly.

Step #1

We begin disassembly from the side of the fuel supply system.

We remove the primer - the pumping bottle, which is noteworthy; during assembly it is simply impossible to install the carburetor parts incorrectly. The products have characteristic ebbs and holes.

Step #2

Remove the pump cover.

Step #3

Now remove the membrane. It is she who performs the function of pumping fuel into the carburetor.

When the membrane vibrates, the other side exerts pressure on the rocker arm of the mechanism and the needle rises, which, in turn, opens the hole and fuel is supplied.

Step #4

Remove the carburetor cover with the injection mechanism.

Step #5

Step #6

There is another gasket under the membrane. We also carefully remove it, without damaging it in any way.

Step #7

There is a valve here, which, when adding gas, opens and increases the flow of air into the engine.

After removing it, you are left with a bare body in your hands. The carburetor is disassembled.

Troubleshooting and Troubleshooting

Now it’s worth paying attention to the problems that occur during carburetor operation and how to fix them.

Problem 1: Clogged holes, channels and jets with dirt

The first thing that happens is that the holes and jets in the fuel supply system become clogged with dirt. Filters installed in the tank and directly in the carburetor do not help. They still allow small particles to pass through, which cause the mower to fail.

Step #8

Now we need to get the needle.

To do this, unscrew the bolt on the mechanism, holding it with your finger. The fact is, there is a spring there and careless action will lead to it being lost.

We take out the needle (see photo) and the spring.

Step #9

What to do with purging. Most effective way– this is the use of an ultrasonic bath.

It is filled with either a special liquid or gasoline, a carburetor is placed there and under the influence of ultrasound, the so-called cavitation effect, the channels are cleared of contaminants.

The second cleaning option is compressed air.

You can use a compressor available on the farm and clean the carburetor channels. However, this method is effective if the contamination is not very large.

If there is neither an ultrasonic bath nor a compressor at hand, then cleaning can be done in a third way using a special cylinder for cleaning the carburetor. They are sold in almost all auto stores and supermarkets. The price is low and is approximately 2-3 $. This cylinder is enough for 4 or 5 purges.

Step #10

Now we need to blow out the channels in the carburetor body and cover. See photo.

Step #11

Another particle of dirt may get stuck under the needle. See photo. This will also lead to failure of the brush cutter.

Important! When cleaning the carburetor, under no circumstances should you use needles, pins or wires. Even the slightest scratch will damage the carburetor. It will have to be changed entirely.

Problem 2: clogged fine filter

It is located on the carburetor cover and is a fine metal mesh. Its contamination occurs very often. This is due to the deposition of oil, additives, and dirt on it.

Step #12

Sometimes, when disassembling into meshes, a certain film is discovered. This carburetor does not have enough fuel and the brush cutter either does not start or works intermittently. The cleaning methods are identical to the first reason: ultrasonic bath, compressor or can with a special solution. In addition, if the mesh is thoroughly clogged, you need to take a soft brush for watercolor paints, dip it in gasoline and carefully rinse it without damaging it.

Problem 3: membrane failure

Step #13

They have the ability to wear out during use. From prolonged use, they become deformed, stretch, lose elasticity, low-quality fuel corrodes them, and can no longer perform their functions well. This also applies to the needle itself. The fact is that it is covered with a thin layer of rubber, which wears out during operation and can no longer fit tightly into the hole. The lawn mower begins to work intermittently. To eliminate such a breakdown, it is necessary to replace all worn parts. Where can I get them?

In specialized stores garden equipment We are selling a repair kit for the carburetor of a certain model of brush cutter. The cost of such a repair kit ranges from 40 to 60 hryvnia.

It includes two diaphragms, a gasket, a needle valve and a spring.

All carburetor wear parts can be replaced. Therefore, you should not rush and buy a new one, and you also don’t need to run to the workshop; repairs can be done by any user of a brush cutter. Professionals claim that the quality of the components in the repair kit even exceeds the characteristics of the original carburetor parts. Therefore, a high-quality repaired unit will work better than a new one.

Problem 4: the bubble button for manual fuel pumping is worn out

Step#14

In addition, the bubble button for manually pumping fuel may fail. Exposure to gasoline leads to the fact that during prolonged use, the rubber is corroded and it begins to stick together or under the influence low temperatures, for example, during storage, it bursts. The button should also be replaced if necessary. In addition, its cost is small and will not affect the size of the repair budget.

Based on the above, we can conclude that there are only three main carburetor malfunctions: clogged channels, contamination of the fine filter and failure of components. In the first two cases, cleaning is enough, and in the third, a repair kit will help.

Carburetor assembly

Assembling the carburetor of a brush cutter is not difficult at all. You must perform all the steps in reverse order:

Step #15

Install a spring and a needle valve in the carburetor cover. Holding the spring with your finger, tighten the fastening bolt.

Step #16

Screw the air supply system valve to the product body with two screws.

Step #17

Turn the carburetor over and proceed to the fuel system assembly. First you need to install the gasket.

Step #18

Install the membrane.

Step #19

Place the carburetor cap.

Step #20

Install the main membrane.

Step #21

Place the pump cover.

Step #22

Install the plate with the manual fuel pumping button and tighten the four screws.

The carburetor is assembled and ready for further use.

Repairing a lawn mower carburetor may seem like a complicated process for the first time, but if you have to disassemble it a second time, this procedure will not cause any particular difficulties.

If you do not find any of the listed problems in your carburetor, it is recommended to seek help from a specialized service.

Selected for you:

With frequent, intensive use of the brush cutter, the gearbox may begin to heat up or make unusual noises. normal operation sounds, such as grinding. This indicates that the mechanism needs to be lubricated. If this is not done in time, then more serious problems will arise (for example, the gears will wear out quickly and will need to be replaced), even jamming. Other breakdowns also occur with the transmission mechanism. You can repair and lubricate the gearbox yourself - to do this, you just need to familiarize yourself with the features of this work and stock up on some available tools.

A trimmer gearbox is a unit that transmits the rotational movement of the motor shaft to a knife or fishing line. It is located at the lower end of the brush cutter rod. The transmission unit is also designed to reduce the trimmer engine speed.

Depending on the model of the brush cutter, the mechanism consists of several gears rotating at high speed. As a result, they heat up due to strong friction. If there is not enough lubrication, or there is none at all, then the process leads to severe overheating and failure of parts, and, accordingly, the need to carry out complex repairs. To prevent this from happening, the transmission unit should be lubricated in a timely manner. The disassembled gearbox is shown in the photo below.

Disassembled gearbox

Gearboxes of modern trimmers different models from different manufacturers differ in design and size seat. It happens:

  • round;
  • in the form of an asterisk;
  • square.

The most common diameters of round seats are 24, 25.5 and 26 mm.

Brush cutters are equipped with gearboxes with different types gears:

  • conical;
  • worm;
  • spiroid;
  • cylindrical;
  • planetary;
  • wave;
  • combined.

The drive shaft and gearbox are heavily loaded trimmer components that are highly susceptible to wear. Between them, movement is transmitted due to the engagement of gear teeth located under different angles to each other. Effectively gear only works if there are no mechanical damage. In this case, the mechanism should not overheat, otherwise it may jam.

Main gearbox malfunctions and ways to eliminate them

Various breakdowns occur with the gearbox of an electric or gasoline trimmer. The most common of them are presented in the table below. There you can also find the causes of their occurrence and methods for eliminating them.

Gearbox malfunctionPossible causes of failureRemedy
the transmission unit gets very hotuse of inappropriate (poor quality) lubricant or its absenceneed to replace or add lubricant
The gears are new and not worn inTo break in, you should work for a short time without heavy loads with regular stops so that the mechanism has time to cool down
shaft jamming during rotation, backlash and knockingdestruction or significant wear of any of the bearingsreplace the failed bearing with a new one
the transmission mechanism flies off the mower bar or wobblesdamage to its bodypart needs to be replaced
in some cases, with minor damage, a clamp made of metal is used to tighten the area with the fracture
does not fit on the pipewear of the docking pointyou can make a winding of insulating tape at the attachment point or change the rod
the output shaft with the knife does not rotate or stops if the load increaseswear of teeth on gears or one of themreplacement of the interacting pair of worn parts is required

Bearings fail due to the use of inappropriate lubricant or lack of lubricant. They are also damaged by harsh operating conditions brush cutters and the ingress of foreign particles of material (for example, broken metal teeth of mechanical gears) due to the fact that the integrity of the anthers is broken.

To remove the bearing, you need to disassemble the gearbox and use special puller. If it is not there, then you can try to do it with a hammer with an adapter. In this case, you should work carefully so as not to damage seat. It is not recommended to use the preheating method to remove the bearing. This is due to the fact that the metal may lose the required performance characteristics.

If the knife stops rotating under load or even stands still, this is accompanied by an uncharacteristic sound.

Most gearbox problems can be easily fixed with your own hands. It is recommended to purchase replacement parts that are “original” and intended for the model of brush cutter used.

Trimmer gear lubrication

Lubrication of gears must be carried out regularly in accordance with the recommendations outlined in operating instructions the model used. This should also be done if:

  • new gears were installed;
  • atypical sounds come from the gearbox during trimmer operation;
  • The knives are difficult to rotate.

In addition to the gearbox, the trimmer shaft also needs to be lubricated regularly. This is the norm proper care behind the device.

With constant use of the trimmer, its transmission mechanism experiences stress from grass, dirt adhering to the blades, or due to changes in torque. You need to choose a high-quality lubricant to extend the life of the gearbox.

Types of lubricant used

When choosing a lubricant, the following factors must be taken into account:

  • degree of adhesion of the composition to the metal of the assembly;
  • product brand;
  • lubricant consumption by the transmission mechanism.

Well-known manufacturers, e.g. , Stihl, Husqvarna and others, in addition to trimmers, also produce lubricant for them. Such products not only reduce wear, but also protect the gear metal from corrosion. Therefore, for brush cutters from these brands, it is better to use their own lubricants.

If the composition used for lubrication has good adhesion, then it is practically not squeezed out of the gearbox through the gaps.

Different models use lubricant differently. This is determined to a large extent by the intensity of use of the brush cutter and the heating of the transmission mechanism. It is considered that the lubricant is sufficient if the temperature of the gearbox during operation does not exceed40°C.

By consistency, lubricants for trimmers can be:

  • liquid;
  • semi-liquid;
  • hard;
  • plastic.

Based on their composition, the following types of lubricants are in demand:

  • graphite, significantly reducing friction, as a result of which gear rotation improves;
  • lithium, which are also an excellent anti-corrosion composition, saturated with additives that increase the wear resistance of the metal without harmful substances;
  • universal containing mineral oils high degree cleaning and performance enhancing components.

Examples of suitable lubricants are: Champion EP-0, Gear Grease OREGON, Oleo-Mas, Azmol 158, Litol -24. You should also pay attention to manufacturers' advice on this issue and use the materials they offer. You can buy them at specialized retail outlets.

Algorithm for self-lubrication of the gearbox

To carry out lubrication of the transmission mechanism, its preliminary no disassembly needed. The device already has a special hole for these purposes (it is shown in the photo below). In addition to the gears, when carrying out lubrication, you need to pay attention to the following elements of the mechanism:

  • bearing unit;
  • flywheel and starter coil pawl.

Lubricant injection hole

Fill in oil or add solid lubricant through a grease fitting closed with a screw. In this case, perform actions in the following sequence:

  • clean the gearbox housing from dirt and adhering grass, especially carefully the area around the plug so that debris does not get inside the mechanism;
  • using the appropriate tool (often it comes with the trimmer), unscrew the plug;
  • the selected lubricant is injected into the open technological hole from a tube or using a syringe, as shown in the photo below;
  • screw the plug into place.

Gear Lubrication

When applying lubricant, you need to rotate the knife so that it is evenly distributed over the teeth of the moving gears.

If for any reason the gearbox needs to be disassembled, then the old lubricant must be completely removed from the entire surface of the gears, housing, and shaft, and only then a new one must be used. It is convenient to lubricate the disassembled mechanism with solid compounds.

The entire gearbox lubrication process is demonstrated in the video:

The transmission unit must be lubricated at least once a year, but it is recommended to do this every 20 hours of intensive use of the brush cutter. If the first signs of malfunctions with the mechanism appear, you need to add lubricant as quickly as possible.

How to replace a trimmer gearbox: algorithm of actions

To replace the gearbox with a similar part from the same manufacturer, it must first be disassembled and removed from the rod. They operate according to the following algorithm:

  • loosen the coupling bolts located under the transmission mechanism;
  • Using pliers, remove two corkscrew rings;
  • using a puller, pull the bearings from the driven and drive shafts;
  • then they assemble the mechanism, installing all the spare parts in the reverse order.

The disassembled transmission mechanism is shown in the photo below.

Disassembled gearbox

If you don’t have a puller at hand, you can try carefully knock down the bearings. When they are stuck and do not budge at all, you can heat them with an industrial hair dryer (at a temperature of 600°C) and remove them.

Assembling the transfer unit is easier than disassembling it. It may only take a light tap with a hammer to seat the parts into place. After assembly, be sure to check that the driven shaft can be turned by hand.

When there is a need to replace the transfer unit with a non-original part, then it should be taken into account their interchangeability. The following should be taken into account:

  • rod diameter (this parameter is often 25.4 or 26 mm);
  • parameters of the drive shaft - the shape of the connecting point and the diameter (its common value is 8 mm);
  • option for securing protection.

If the considered parameters match, then it will be possible to install a part from other models.

Timely lubrication of the gearbox will ensure its long-term operation without repairs. Besides, modern materials They protect the metal well from corrosion and increase its wear resistance. When choosing, preference should be given to the lubricant recommended by the manufacturer of the trimmer being used. If it is not possible to purchase such compositions, then the considered or other analogues suitable for their properties should be used. When it is necessary to disassemble a mechanism during repairs, this should be done carefully so as not to damage individual parts.
