Door opening limiter - types, design, which one to choose. Types of door locks and their use Locking a metal door in the open position

The ease of use of a door does not always depend on correct installation or door handle, which fits well in the hand. Sometimes it is necessary for the balcony door to be fixed, either open or closed position, without using the locking mechanism mounted in the door itself.

In these cases, door clamps are an indispensable accessory. These are the simplest products in design, performing strictly defined functions, but very necessary in everyday life.

Types of fasteners

According to their purpose, door locks can be used:

  • for holding in an open or intermediate position;
  • to hold in closed position;
  • to limit the door opening angle.

By design, latches can be stationary, rigidly attached to a door, floor or wall, or mobile - allowing them to be used only at certain moments and removed when they are no longer needed.

The location of the clamps can be:

  • floor-mounted (stationary or mobile);
  • wall;
  • mounted on the door leaf.

Locks for closed door position

This type of door clamps is intended to hold a balcony or any other interior door in closed position.

The most complex in design, and requiring some time for installation, are roller and halyard door latches, installed at the end of a plastic door.

Roller latches hold the door due to a rotating spring-loaded roller (ball), which, when the balcony door is closed, fits into a slot (hole) in a metal strike plate mounted on the door frame. This is a very old and time-tested design that can serve for many years without requiring any maintenance for the door to close. The only drawback is the failure of the latch when the door sag or the geometry of the door frame changes, when the roller does not fit into the slot on the strike plate.

Hinge latches are usually associated with the door opening mechanism and are a beveled spring-loaded tongue that fits freely into a slot in the strike plate located on the door frame. But to open the door, you will need to use the door handle to press the tongue and force it to come out of the slot. Such door locks are often equipped with interior doors. Mounting it on a plastic balcony door is difficult and non-functional. Halve door latches are subject to the same problems as roller latches - they do not work if the door sag or the geometry of the door frame is damaged (swollen after flooding or, conversely, deformed due to excessive dryness indoor air).

The most popular today is a magnetic retainer - two metal or polymer rubber plates with magnetic properties, one of which is attached to the edge of the door, and the second to the door frame. Magnetic door latches are practically silent (unlike roller and halyard latches, which click when closing), work almost forever, do not require any maintenance, and their performance does not depend on the position of the door relative to the door frame (sagging, deformation).

Door open position clamps

The most widely represented type of door latches, which can prevent the balcony door from closing (slamming) in case of sudden gusts of wind or draft, protect the fingers (especially small children) from being pressed, or set the required opening angle of the plastic balcony door for ventilation, limit the possibility of opening the door from sides of the balcony, for example, to the animals that are there.

The simplest type of door latches for the open position of a balcony door is a wedge made of soft polymer, which is inserted between the lower end of the door and the floor.

It can be made independently from penoplex or other elastic polymer. This type of clamp is convenient to use. You don't even have to bend over to install it. Just push it with your foot. And in the same way, you can unlock the door with your foot by removing the latch.

A little more complex design has a lock - a “jack” - a mechanical product installed with a soft non-slip base on the floor and using a pedal that pushes the vertical bar up, fixing the door in the desired position open position. To unlock it, you need to press the lever at the base of the latch. This type of clamp can also be controlled exclusively with your feet.

The latches that limit the possibility of arbitrary closing of the balcony door are products made of soft elastic polymer, shaped like an open donut. They are worn on the side or top part balcony door and do not allow it to slam shut under any circumstances. This is mainly for families with small children.

Opening limiters

This type of latches includes stationary wall or floor latches, which are rigidly attached to the base and prevent the door from opening wider than necessary.

Serve to prevent the door from hitting furniture or a wall when opening.

If it is not possible to install the limiter on the floor or wall, it can be installed directly on the upper part door frame and rest against the stop mounted on the slope of the balcony door when opening.

This design is the most unreliable, since the PVC profile is quite fragile and can break if the doors are opened suddenly.

Installation of clamps

Most clamps do not require special installation and are portable structures.

The exception is door latches in the closed position, which must be installed on the door and stationary wall or floor. This is not difficult to do. It is enough to drill 2-3 holes in the floor covering or wall (depending on the design) and screw the fastener with self-tapping screws. When installing the roller (halter) clamp, you will have to break the integrity plastic profile in order to bury the spring mechanism into it and drill a hole in the door frame jamb into which the latch roller (tongue) will fit. To install the magnetic fastener, you do not need to violate the integrity of the plastic doors - it is glued to double-sided foam tape or glue for PVC products.

Eventually

For all their simplicity and simplicity, these devices are sometimes very useful. Ease of use is their main advantage. The price of such devices is also low. Many clips are made in the form of toys or figurines and can be perceived as such in everyday life, without spoiling the interior or taking up much space. Door latches in the closed position allow you to do this yourself, without outside help, to close and open the balcony door to a person on the balcony, if the door is equipped with a “shell” handle.

The functioning of doors is ensured by such structural details as handles, locks, hinges and latches. Retainers for open door- These are limiters that make it easier for residents to move around the house. A small object in the interior will allow you to hold the door, preventing the door leaf from slamming, which often happens in the house at the most unexpected moment.

The product, which has long gained popularity as a useful item, is now widely represented on the market. Customers are offered holders of various shapes and design features made from a variety of materials.

Types of holders

Based on the type of reinforcement inside the interior, there are three main types:

  • floor;
  • wall;
  • above the door.

Most door stops are installed on the floor as a permanent device to hold doors. They are available in a wide range of colors to choose from, so it’s easy to purchase a design for a specific interior. As a rule, the holder repeats the color and shape of an existing or selected door handle.

The undoubted advantages of floor elements include, first of all, their low cost compared to other commercially available options.

Floor-mounted door holders are also universal, as they can be installed both indoors and outdoors. It is also convenient to use the lower lock to secure the external door facing the street.

It is absolutely easy to install a floor blocker; in almost any case, it is sold complete with a mounting kit. The floor is a flat and reliable plane that firmly holds the fixed element. Complementing the holder and serving as a damping element, a rubber or silicone gasket or leg softens the process of opening the door.

The main materials for holders are aesthetic and attractive metal connections with copper stainless steel and brass. In addition to stationary ones, there are portable floor holders. The parts are made of non-slip materials and have a wedge shape. If stationary holders prevent doors from completely opening and closing, then the main function of portable elements is to secure the open door leaf.

The wall stopper is considered a suitable mechanism for those interiors where there is an expensive floor covering. Such a coating is easy to spoil externally, so installing floor holders in in this case Experts do not recommend resorting to it. Due to the design features of the installation of the floor plane, it simply becomes impossible to secure the stopper. This is why homes with solid doors made of hardwood and other strong and solid compositions often use wall mounting options.

Drywall and similar modern building composites, on the contrary, are not considered reliable enough to secure bollards. Another important factor during installation is the force applied when closing the doors. In order not to damage the wall, blockers are produced not only with hard, but also with predominantly soft parts.

Wall options blockers are slightly more expensive than floor stopping devices, so they are also used quite often in the interior. Mount wall holders occurs by analogy with floor-mounted ones, the installation diagram is the same.

Simplicity and ease of installation allows each owner to install the element independently, without the help of specialists. Among the wall holders most often found on the home goods market:

  • Emphasis. On one side of the holder there is a bracket, on the other there is a rubber shock absorber.
  • Latch. This mechanism is also double-sided, with the other side of the latch engaging the door handle, preventing it from entering the opening and closing. A similar latch is mounted a little differently: a plate with a protrusion is attached to the door leaf at the bottom end, and a latch with a spring on the wall clings to the protrusion. Thus, the door always remains open.
  • Door handle stops. They are used when there is nowhere else to place the holder, or you need to avoid marks on door leaf from the rubber part of the standard stop. The plastic stop is mounted on the wall at the level of the door handle.

Over-door bollards are available in a wide variety of types. They are also distinguished by ease of installation - using a drill and two or three self-tapping screws. The main types of such clamps:

  • Folding with spring mechanism.
  • Tape with fasteners attached on both sides.
  • Retractable. They are a retractable block, adjustable with a plate on the side. Easily rises and falls with the movement of the foot.
  • Sliding. Mounted on the door, setting any desired angle opening. When fully opened, fixation occurs due to an additional hole in the groove.
  • Emollient. From soft materials, are attached in the middle of the door leaf.

Main functions

Holders, stoppers and restrictive elements installed in the interior guarantee reliable and comfortable use of door leaves. Any door can be opened slightly or left completely open. This prevents possible injuries and ensures complete safety for children.

What is important for many pet owners is that their pets do not get hit by the entrance and other doors in the house.

According to the necessary functions, limiting mechanisms are divided into groups for fixing the position of the doors:

  • Locking. The process is ensured by such types as limiters or latches. If you use them, you will no longer be able to open the door from the outside.
  • Partial, that is, incomplete opening. Stopping devices stop the movement of the canvas, leaving the opening half-open.
  • Full closure. Typically, the role of locking doors in this position is performed by floor mechanisms and door closers.
  • As a limitation and holding the door in a certain position (universal devices with magnetic properties are needed).

Design Features

Design features allow you to achieve ideal functioning depending on the purpose of a particular door in the house. Therefore, when purchasing, it is important to choose the best option out of all existing ones and not get lost in their diversity.

Firmly holding the door in the desired position is achieved using a magnetic lock. The devices reliably protect doors from unexpected drafts. They are mounted on the wall or on the door itself. In this case, the side adjacent to the wall is equipped with a soft pad and does not leave marks or damage to the wall finish.

Many such devices are placed directly in the door handle. The roller and ball mechanism prevents accidental opening, having a special groove into which the main part is hidden when closing. The foil device has a special tongue that fits inside the groove.

Furniture closers are most often used for compartment doors. Devices such as over-door and furniture closers bring the door to the fully closed position. The device is a spring located in a metal shell. Technical oil or silicone liquid is poured between the capsule and the spring. Regulation is provided by membranes and a valve system. Over-door closers are shock-absorbing devices that delay the movement of the panel, making it smoother until it closes softly.

To choose best option for your home, you need to evaluate the advantages of each type of door stopper. The price of the mechanism, the complexity of installation, and comfort during use play a role. For each interior, you can choose an option in which safe operation is combined with the preservation of the wall and floor covering without damage and marks on the door from the use of such devices in the form of potholes and dents.

Inexpensive floor holders can be placed both inside the house and on the street side. Both compact metal and cork stops are produced that do not take up much space (sizes up to 7-8 cm), as well as anti-burglary devices. If they try to open the door, press metal part stop, which is powered by a battery. This will emit a loud warning signal.

Such a limiter performs two functions - stop and protection against thieves.

For glass door or plastic sheet, interior partitions good choice the latch will become magnetic. The latch stops the door thanks to the interaction of a magnet and metal part. The ease of use of such a stopper is obvious, although installation is not as simple as that of floor holders or soft options.

In over-door holders, the working unit is attached to the door leaf itself, so they are used for entrance and interior doors. Many options do not require fastening, since they only prevent the canvas from slamming. Folding holders called “goat legs” are capable of holding any door, including the entrance door; the stops are long enough to create reliable design. They are chosen for solid wood or aluminum planes. The stop is chosen if you need to hold the door in the open position.

Reading time: 6 minutes.

Correct installation quality materials and an ergonomic handle are the basis for comfortable use of the door. But for a more comfortable and safe operation it is necessary to equip the door leaf with additional devices. One of them is a latch, the main function of which is to lock the sash in the required position.

Types of fasteners

To choose the right type of accessory from a variety of models, you need to determine in what room and for what purpose it will be installed. The entire variety of door locks is usually divided according to several criteria:

  • purpose - to fix the door in a closed, open position or at a certain angle;
  • by location - floor, wall, over-door;
  • by design - with rigid mounting or mobile.

Application cases

Door stoppers are small and inexpensive, but very useful accessories. They are used in everyday life, public institutions and industrial premises. Main advantages and reasons for using a retainer:

  • ensures safe swinging of the sash, which prevents the doors, furniture and walls themselves from accidental damage;
  • fixes the door in a given position in rooms with high traffic or, if necessary, to carry large objects;
  • prevents sudden closing of the sash and its possible damage from a gust of wind or draft;
  • allows pets to move freely throughout the entire area of the apartment or house;
  • allows you to leave children unattended in the room for some time.

Open position clamps, opening angle limiters

Magnetic door lock

A wide category of fasteners, both in appearance and in the method of fastening and principle of operation. It is useful to have them at home, since from time to time situations arise when you need to temporarily lock the door in the open position to carry things in or ventilate. IN public spaces With active traffic, such accessories are indispensable.

Another type of magnetic latches

Floor (wall) clamps

Common and easy-to-install types of limiter. They are characterized by ease of installation and use, low cost and long-term reliability. Such devices can be either stationary or portable:

The stopper is attached to the bottom of the sash and allows you to temporarily fix the leaf in the open or half-open position. Available in various colors, suitable for installation on wooden, aluminum, plastic doors for any purpose.

Closed position latches

These types of limiters are installed to fix the sash in the closed position; they are used for interior and balcony doors in residential premises, entrance doors in in public places and shops. There are several types of structures, each of which has its own characteristics and advantages.

Ball (roller)

They are mounted on the end of the door leaf; when closing, the ball-tongue with a spring enters the hole in the strike plate, fixed to the door frame at the same level, and securely fixes the door in the closed position. A fairly reliable and time-tested mechanism that can withstand many opening and closing cycles. The principle of operation and design of the roller stops are similar to the ball mechanism, but the shape of the tongue is more elongated.

Ball (roller) latches are not associated with the door handle - to open the door you just need to press the door leaf. Such mechanisms are convenient for equipping doors that need to be closed most of the time, but easy to open when necessary.

Installing such a latch does not require dismantling the door handle and locking device - this is an additional device that is usually located a little higher or lower. It is necessary to observe the relative correspondence of the levels of the tongue and the hole on the strike plate horizontally.

False

They have a beveled tongue, which also, when closing, fits into the corresponding slot in the metal strike plate installed on the door frame. To open the door, you need to turn the door handle - the latches, unlike ball latches, are associated with it.

This type of latches is more reliable compared to ball (roller) ones - such a door will not be opened by a strong gust of wind or Small child. When installing a halyard lock on a balcony door, it is recommended to provide a double-sided rotary handle, otherwise it will be impossible to open such a door from the balcony.

You are tired of loudly slamming doors and unpleasant chips on the walls left by the door leaf, then it’s time to purchase and install a door opening limiter. Next, we will analyze in detail the types of such devices, and finally we will show how to install a door stop with your own hands.

Door opening limiters are quite varied.

The stool pushed under the door and the homemade wooden wedge are slowly becoming history. Nowadays the industry produces a wide variety of stops, which can sometimes be difficult to understand.

Classification of limiters

In fact, a door stop is one of the types of small fittings. Doors are divided into entrance and interior; the weight and dimensions of the door leaves can vary greatly, respectively, and the door stops used are different.

In addition, door stops can perform different, sometimes opposing, functions. It’s one thing when you need a stop so that the canvas doesn’t hit the wall, and quite another thing when you need to protect children’s fingers from a door that closes at the wrong time.

But how to do right choice, if often a common person has a rather vague idea of what kind of mechanism he needs. First, let's go over some basic terms.

Original door stop design.

  • Stops - designed to limit the angle of rotation of the door, and sometimes to fix the leaf at the end point when it comes into contact with the stop;
  • Chips are needed to soften or prevent the door leaf from hitting a wall or some other object, for example, furniture;
  • Stoppers - these structures must rigidly fix the canvas at a certain point. The most striking representative of stoppers is the well-known chain;
  • Overlays - prevent the door from completely slamming, leaving a small gap between the jamb and the door leaf;
  • Latches are essentially a type of lock; the latch secures the door in a closed position. There is still no consensus among experts whether latches should be considered locks or stops;
  • A door closer is usually a limiter for opening the front door. The direct purpose of the door closer is to ensure smooth closing of the doors, but there are models that allow you to fix the door leaf open at a certain point.

Many modern door closers can be adjusted locally.

Despite the variety of terms and countless models, all these designs are divided into 3 fundamental areas:

  1. Stoppers installed on the floor;
  2. Wall-mounted limiters;
  3. Stoppers installed on the door itself.

Floor models

A floor stopper for a door is perhaps the most reliable option, because the floor is static, it will not go anywhere, plus the price for most floor models, as a rule, does not “go beyond” 200 rubles.

The color of the permanently fixed stop-post should be in harmony with the overall design.

Metal stop posts are stationary stops that are rigidly attached to the floor. The height of such a stop ranges from 3 to 7 cm, the average diameter of the cylinder is 20 - 30 mm. In order not to “mutilate” the door, there is a groove on the post with a rubber or polyurethane seal.

If installed correctly, the column itself will not be in any danger, but the seals will have to be changed periodically. It is better not to install bollards in the residential area of an apartment or private house, as it is easy to trip over them, but the bollard is perfect as a limiter for opening the front door.

When choosing such a column, it is better to give preference to shiny and contrasting models. At least they can be seen from afar and there is less chance that a person will trip.

Semicircular door opening stop.

The semicircular door stopper looks like a quarter of a dissected ball with a shock-absorbing gasket. There is no fundamental difference in the operation of posts and semicircular stops, but when installing the latter, you need to take into account the installation angle so that the door leaf comes into contact with the rubber gasket and does not hit the metal.

A magnetic door stop allows you to hold the door in the open position.

A door stop equipped with a magnet is a more functional design. A small magnet is built into the head of the stationary stop, and a counter is attached to the door. metal plate, as a result, the door leaf is fixed in contact with the stop.

Magnetic structures, of course, are not very suitable for entrance doors, because the strength of the magnet is not enough to hold the door leaf in gusts of wind, but indoors such stops work flawlessly.

Cork stops are only suitable for the corresponding design.

Cork, rubber and polyurethane stops are varieties of the same posts, the only difference is in the material. But before installing such an original stop, you need to think carefully, because a soft stop is not a guarantee that you won’t “beat off” your fingers on it, plus the cork is practically invisible on the carpet.

The ability to lock the stop head in a lock mounted on the door jamb is quite useful feature. Such devices have proven themselves especially well in entrance doors offices, administrative buildings and shops, in general, anywhere where a simple fastener can pop out due to carelessness or a gust of wind.

The spring limiter is good decision for temporary fixation of the door leaf.

The design solution is ingeniously simple: synthetic anti-slip “hedgehogs” are fixed on both sides of the flexible steel plate; you only need to slightly bend the plate and slide it under the doors.

This device is well suited for temporarily securing doors, for example, if you need to bring in furniture. With this stop, even if the door moves due to an accidental push, the expensive laminate or parquet will remain intact.

A wedge-shaped retainer is the simplest solution to the problem.

Wedge-shaped, or as they are also called, mobile clamps are now made from different synthetic materials, but in essence these are the same wooden wedges that our grandfathers inserted under the doors, only the external surroundings have changed. Although synthetics must be given their due, such a door stop does not slide on the floor.

The signal limiter may become the last bastion in the path of robbers. Cheaper models simply make a loud sound when the door leaf comes into contact with them, and “advanced” stops silently send a radio signal to some receiving device, for example, mobile phone or security console.

Wall models

Installing a door stop on the wall is an excellent solution for rooms where, for one reason or another, it is not desirable to attach the device to the floor, for example, expensive floor coverings, such as marble or natural parquet.

Classic wall door stop.

The cost of wall-mounted devices starts from 150 rubles, although this is not much, but still more than that of floor limiters.

The market leader here is the standard stop with a platform and rubber shock absorber mounted on top of a metal rod. What distinguishes it from the floor-standing cork version is the presence of a wider support platform and a rod length from 5 to 15 cm.

When choosing, you need to consider what material your wall is made of. For monolithic brick or concrete walls there is no difference, but for drywall you need to buy a device with a wide fastening platform (minimum 100x100 mm), otherwise the plasterboard will simply break from a pinpoint impact.

The simplest wall stop with screw fixation.

The wall-mounted version of the magnetic device may differ from its floor-standing “brother” only in the length of the rod, otherwise they are identical.

It is often not possible to secure the stopper to the floor, and rubber shock absorbers with a rod leave unpleasant marks on the door leaf. In this case, a soft pad on the wall under the handle will help you.

Soft synthetic material will smoothly absorb the shock, to install the stop you do not need to drill into the wall, just glue the device onto double-sided tape, and most importantly, there are a lot of design options here and choosing a model to suit your interior will not be difficult.

Soft model with handle support

The line of wall fixtures also includes stops with a reliable lock. As shown in the photo below, the mechanism itself is mounted on the wall with self-tapping screws, and the hook with the platform is screwed from the bottom end to the door leaf.

The principle of operation is simple: a rounded door hook, approaching the stopper, lifts the moving part and, thanks to the spring, the latch catches. The only inconvenience is that to release the doors you will have to push the latch manually.

Wall-mounted version of the stop with a lock.

Door fittings

The beauty is that if we're talking about about wooden or plastic doors then to attach such a limiter you only need a screwdriver, and in some cases you can get by with just glue. Plus the walls and floor will remain intact.

In folding metal stops, the base plate is screwed to the door leaf with self-tapping screws, but during installation you need to be careful about setting the angle of inclination of the stop relative to the floor; an acute angle can cause the mechanism to break. Optimal inclination is around 45º.

In addition, when choosing, it is better to give preference to mechanisms that have a folding spring; they are much more reliable.

Folding metal door stopper.

The tape stop can be safely called a symbol of simplicity. There are platforms for self-tapping screws attached on both sides of the durable tape; you just need to screw these platforms to the doors and jamb.

Is it true appearance This limiter leaves much to be desired, plus such tapes fray or break quite quickly.

If you still decide to buy a tape stop, then it is better to choose elastic stretchable models; their price is not much higher, but such stops are more convenient to use.

The tape stop is considered one of the simplest and most affordable options.

The retractable door stop is a rod with a kind of brake pad. It is installed in a vertical position and you can decide for yourself exactly where to fix the structure.

The retractable door stop is a fairly compact and convenient device.

The sliding model is designed to rigidly fix the door leaf at certain points; there can be several points, it all depends on the number of cutouts in the solid base groove.

This device cannot be called completely over-the-door, since the base part with the groove is attached to door jamb, and only the movable rod is fixed on the canvas. Although this is not essential, on some models the fastening units can be swapped.

The undoubted advantage of such a stop is its installation at the top of the doors, where it does not interfere with anyone. On the other hand, to release the rod from the fixing groove you will have to reach it, which is not always convenient.

One of the popular sliding stop models.

Soft linings prevent the door from slamming. These devices are especially convenient in children's rooms; with such pads, your child's fingers are much less likely to get caught in the doors. There is no need to talk about installation at all, the rubber band is simply put on the door.

The soft pad is designed to protect the doors from accidental slamming.

Installation technique

Installing a door stop is quite simple. We won’t talk about gluing options, you can handle this yourself. As for fixing with screws, the instructions are something like this:

  1. We install the door with a gap between the handle and the wall of about 20 mm and mark the position on the floor;
  2. According to the mark on the floor, we set the stop at the desired angle;
  3. We drill a hole for the dowel for the self-tapping screw and insert the dowel itself;
  4. We screw the stop with a self-tapping screw to the floor.

Wall and door opening limiters are mounted in approximately the same way, so retell this simple instructions it makes no sense.

Conclusion

We tried to reflect as fully as possible all types of door stops. In the video in this article you will find additional information on this topic.

There are many varieties door hardware, without which not only convenience, but also the operation of the product itself is impossible. The list is significant - awnings, handles, eyes, locking mechanisms. And here is the door opening limiter on the list necessary accessories is not included, and few people still know about it, much less install it during the installation of the unit. But in most cases, this fixing element is simply irreplaceable.

Purpose of limiters

Their main function, regardless of the variety, is to protect and protect. Who (or what) and from what exactly?

  • Of people. There are often situations when door leaf suddenly swings open spontaneously from a strong draft or from someone’s effort. What if there is a child standing in front of her? Although an adult can quite easily be injured by the same handle, or even by the canvas itself. When installing a door lock, such cases are completely eliminated. This locking element securely holds it in a user-defined position.
  • Property. A sharp opening of the door results in its handle touching the wall, a piece of furniture standing near the doorway. More precisely, it hits them. As a result, damage to the cladding of the room and the canvas itself. If we analyze all the costs of at least partial repairs, elimination of defects that have appeared, with the cost of a door stopper, the conclusion is clear; its installation is more than advisable.
  • Elements of fittings. This fact is not mentioned by all sources, but it exists. For example, if we are talking about a “passage” door that has to be constantly opened, then the limiter allows you to reduce the wear rate of the same hinges. When there is a large flow of people or frequent movements of household members from one room to another and back (for example, in the morning, before leaving for work), it is enough to fix the sash in the open position so that it is not constantly slammed. The same applies to the resource of the latch mechanism combined with the handle of the interior door; it also has an output limit.

Types of limiters

They are classified according to several parameters, but this does not mean that the division of emphasis into varieties is so unambiguous. Each of the modifications of limiters is characterized by a number of features that are characteristic of a particular group of products. Knowing the features of their functioning and use, it is easier to find the best option for a lock for a particular door.

According to the specific application

Clamps that hold the door in the closed position. Essentially, these are latches that prevent the sash from opening spontaneously. You don't need to turn the handle to open them; All you have to do is pull the door towards you. The most complex in terms of device are the motion limiters installed on plastic balcony doors.

Roller clamps are reliable and durable. The working “organ” is most often made in the form of a ball, which, in the closed position, fits into the slot of the strike plate installed on the jamb.

For the mechanism to work properly, little is required - systematic monitoring of the door condition and timely adjustment. If there is significant sagging or distortion, the latch will not work, since the roller will move relative to the seat.

A halyard stop is an angled tongue that is articulated with the door handle mechanism. When it is pressed or turned, it is pulled into the sash. It returns to its original position by a spring. Interior and entrance doors are equipped with such clamps.

Magnetic door stops that have appeared on the market are quickly gaining popularity. They are a pair of plates, one of which is attached to the canvas, the other to the box. Such clamps are not afraid of distortions and deformation of the canvas; they securely hold the sash regardless of operating conditions, do not require maintenance or adjustment, and with careful use can perform their function indefinitely.

These stops are necessary to ensure that the door is held securely in the open position. Many people make fasteners of this type themselves from scrap materials, placing a rolled-up newspaper, a board or an old slipper between the canvas and the frame; therefore, the principle of operation of the limiter is clear.

The so-called “jacks” consist of a pedal (fixed to the floor or canvas) and a rod rigidly connected to it, which is held by a spring. Such door open position latches are controlled solely by the foot, which is convenient if your hands are busy with something and you need to close the door behind you. Moreover, if necessary, you can easily rearrange the stop of this type, thereby changing the angle at which the canvas swings.

The door latch in the open position, which is equipped with a PVC structure, is designed differently. Its task is to prevent tight closing of the opening to the balcony. For example, if a child comes out to him and the door slams shut due to a gust of wind, he is unlikely to be able to cope with it on his own. Some effort is required here, and the baby will be completely isolated.

Limiters regulating the opening angle

“Combs” are installed mainly on balcony doors made of plastics. Their purpose is to hold the sash in the position selected by the user. For example, to ventilate a room. One part of the retainer is attached to the door leaf, the other to the block. Such fittings are familiar to many plastic windows; the analogy is complete.

"Hoses" and "tapes". Opening limiters of this type are installed on entrance and interior doors. Unlike combs, they do not fix them, but fully correspond to their name. The length of the hose (tape) determines the maximum angle at which the sash can be opened. Since it is adjustable, it improves ease of use.

By installation method

The restraints are attached to a solid base, where it is more convenient for the owner and more expedient, based on local specifics:

  • wall;

  • door leaf (block).

According to the principle of operation

  • Regular stops. They are a rigid core with soft covering; basically RTI.
  • Mechanical limiters. The same latches controlled by the door handle mechanism.
  • Magnetic latches.

By execution

  • Stationary installation. For example, an interior door latch, a “comb”.
  • Mobile versions. Typical example– “jack” clamp.

The benefits of installing limiters are obvious. And if you consider that they can be made in the most original form (various figures and the like), then this element of door hardware is easy to fit into any interior. Moreover, the choice of products is huge, since many of them combine several functions - to limit, fix, regulate.
