DVR with GPS: how to choose a quality car gadget wisely? DVRs with GPS module

Pavel_A 05-06-2017 06:44

I'm looking for a budget recorder and I asked myself:

So far I see only a negative - your speed is scorching. Is there any way to remove speed data from a picture or is this data permanently recorded in the video?
For insurance purposes, as I understand it, you need GLONAS. It turns out that GPS may not be able to scan when traveling according to the European protocol?

Do you need GPS in a DVR?

Yeah.
It also reports about the cameras about the speed (allowed) in non-repair mode.

What kind of mode is this?

TTT did not have to resort to evidence, but it was very convenient.
Now I use it around the city, I’ve come to terms with the “squealing” in the tunnel.
It also shows overloads in XYZ.

Understood. But mine doesn’t catch this...it seems.

that's what I'm saying - it doesn't catch

Moscow time I look at most cars with recorders already. but the traffic doesn't get any better

How will the regik help the cork dissolve? Or what does “improve” mean?

Alexandr13 05-06-2017 09:59

So they began to slowly leak data from the recorders to the traffic police.

That is, the process of the ruble striking auto-hammers has begun.

I've been driving around Moscow since 1984. Compared to what it was, and especially grew in the 90s, now there is such complete silence, driving culture and respect.
The fact that I previously sent not about auto-hammers, but about specific violations affecting traffic safety and outright violations, has never had any effect.
Maybe now they are responding better, but I stopped sending.

I must admit I have never encountered anything like this.

Mich1 05-06-2017 12:17

For myself, I deliberately chose without GPS, since the speed is scorching, and it is not possible to turn off this function on all models. Why collect incriminating evidence on yourself? And the navigator and the phone app tell you about the cameras.

And the registrar himself scorches your violations. The speed, if anything, in almost all regs is turned off upon reaching a certain value, which is configurable.

And where, to whom and how does it fire?

Kush-tengri 05-06-2017 12:42

That is, colleagues deliberately violate and for some reason try to insure their position in much smaller retaliatory raids by law enforcement agencies?
Well, faq? The position is understandable, but from the point of view of the Lord God - how? Here we violate, and then we demand satisfaction? Somehow a strange position, IMHO. Either not at all, or absolutely yes! Then one thing will be aligned with the other: violations and punishments
In fact - alas, we had to issue a European protocol, and only the record from the registrar with imprinted geo-coordinates had an effect on the insurance company. The coordinates printed directly into the image do not indicate the source - GPS or GLONASS, especially since, as far as I remember, in the Law, what is not GLONASS is blurred with the words “and others...”.
And the length of the video recording provided to the inspectors varies within the limits you desire: you don’t have to give the entire recording on the spot, but write down in the protocol (if drawn up by the inspector) that there is a recording, it will be provided “as soon as possible” after arriving home. At home, what is needed is cut out and sent. But in the European protocol it’s finally not necessary. Everything you need is included when submitting an application to the insurance company.

If so, then very good.

Otherwise, it used to be like this: the traffic police officer confiscated the flash drive on the spot and only then was it considered a carrier of video evidence, and if it was not given back, then the gibbon wrote that the recording was not provided, and then the “most basmanny” court considered that the owner of the video recorder had falsified the video evidence and they don’t need any examinations for nothing.

Kush-tengri 05-06-2017 13:02

Perhaps this was once the case. But now (there are precedents and clarifications) there are, for example, devices that cannot give out a flash drive on site (there are large recording systems with many cameras and a hard drive as one example). The main thing in the arguments is “the absence of the possibility of counterfeiting.” If you post a recording a couple of hours later in a publicly accessible place, this is a real argument for its originality, because in modern times the production of fakes takes quite a lot of time, and the courts seem to have received instructions on this topic. I read somewhere that such records are not even sent for examination (unless it is a high-profile case or they have not paid very well) - there is no point, because it is obvious that it is impossible to stamp a fake in a couple of hours.
Yes, and the authorities found such a “Basmanny” court. Time is just running out and money is needed for all sorts of duties. Here's how much they write now about what's up Supreme Court people get there and get their license back!

Spar 05-06-2017 13:45

So in terms of speed, I don’t understand at all who is firing who?
If there is an accident involving excessive speed, it is usually... well, with very sad consequences for both parties. There, probably other people will look at the registrar.
An ordinary, serial accident involves grinding in, hits on the butt, in the front end, etc., without violating the speed limit.
Well, why shoot there?

So take it better with GPS. In any case, if you position yourself as a respectable driver, and not MBaghdasaryan, then this will only be a plus for you.

Not certainly in that way.

You don't have to write down the speed value.

I don’t violate anything else except “speed”))). Well, I don't need this function. And so, the navigator warns, then the smartphone, then both at once, a third voice was still missing. Too much for me. But naturally, everyone decides for themselves.
Regarding the buggyness - sometimes when low temperatures It doesn't turn on by itself.

PS By the way, about the Euro protocol. - I insure myself with a large insurance company - it is one of the top five - so they have a fine of 5 percent of the amount of payments automatically if you register without the traffic police, which they warned about during the last re-registration.

at least neoline doesn't glitch. We've already learned how to do twos. Of course, except for those cases when the crap doesn’t pick up satellites. Right now I already have Wi-Fi, which can be written to a third-party device and a flash drive - i.e. You can give it to the cops and not parizza. and there is a connection via multimedia

Finally, DVRs have firmly and, undoubtedly, entered Russian automotive life for a long time. However, if for some they are just an opportunity to launch an adventure on Youtube in order to “become famous” for their road “feat”, then for millions of other drivers this is real active remedy in clarifying controversial transport situations.

It is worth dwelling on this most important use of them. For what? Any recorders can record pictures. However, to verify the authenticity of recorded video facts, great importance will have evidence of the location and time of recordings. Therefore, a combination of a navigator and a DVR works better as “witnesses”.

The GPS module is shaped like a tablet, exactly copying the base of the DVR, and connected to it with a tail cable. It is especially profitable to buy a recorder with a vertical housing. This form factor allows the device to be installed between the rearview mirror and the glass. The main thing is that the control buttons of the device do not cover, and that the camera “looks” more into the glass cleaning sector with the right wiper.

It is enough if the fastening of this equipment is provided by double-sided tape. So, if necessary, your recorder can be removed, leaving only the GPS module on the glass. Although, of course, the adhesive tape connection makes the structure stationary, because it is not designed for repeated removal. An important advantage of “advanced” recorders is the ability to synchronously connect a second camera.

It doesn't seem necessary to have a separate power key if you like automatic start of recording (in power-on mode). When turned on for the first time, the GPS module can pick up satellites for more than a minute, but the next time it is turned on, the signal will be processed faster.

Meanwhile, it makes sense to connect recorders not to the cigarette lighter, but to a constant power source. Then, after several minutes of standing and, accordingly, the absence of vibrations, the parking mode is activated.

Such DVRs themselves transform into security cameras. They are not recorded continuously, but only when the built-in shock sensors are triggered. Sometimes this option requires purchasing an optional CVR/DPC cable, with a voltage control unit that turns off the recorder if the battery starts to run low.

This section presents reviews of DVRs that are equipped with a GPS module.

The GPS module communicates with the satellite, receiving coordinates from it. The obtained data on the location and speed of the vehicle is displayed on video. This information is necessary to provide the video recording as evidence in court.

The presence of a GPS module does not mean that the device has the function. Without a navigator, the GPS module only works to obtain data about the speed and location of the vehicle.

You can read more about what a GPS module is and other functions of DVRs in our

KARKAM A360 – An attempt to make a 360-degree video recorder accessible to most buyers. And it seems that she was a success!

For a long time now, testing recorders has become an everyday routine - despite the differences in design and characteristics, as well as different functional richness, there has been nothing fundamentally new for a long time. Manufacturers followed the established path, sometimes slightly modifying appearance and adding even more unimportant service functions.

On many sites that sell DVRs, I sometimes see ridiculous articles describing phony advantages of certain models. There are often articles on the topic “How to choose a DVR”, even on good, information portals, written either for PR purposes, or out of ignorance by the author of this topic.

I often hear when a potential client, having read such “opuses,” calls us and asks questions about the device, directly quoting lines.

Let's try to understand these criteria, are they really that important? What do they influence? I have selected 10 of the most common myths and offer you our point of view.

1. The recorder must have a screen

This is the most common myth. The screen is necessary for quick viewing of what is recorded. If your car has a head unit with a screen or you always have a modern mobile phone/tablet/laptop with you, then there is no need for a screen. For viewing via video output, WI-Fi or by transferring a memory card, you can easily watch the video. And, most importantly, how often in reality did you have a MANDATORY need to watch the video on the spot? This could happen with a setup from the traffic police, we can agree with that. In other options, live review is not necessary if you are confident in what you did. If you are not sure, you don’t need the recording; it may not work in your favor.

If you're worried about setting up a camera without a screen, then those worries are completely unfounded. In general, almost all recorders without a screen are equipped with a video output or wi-fi module and the ability to view the picture in live mode for configuration. In addition, with an angle of more than 110 degrees diagonally, adjusting the lens even to the “eye”, you are guaranteed to capture all 3 lanes of the road. Well, the third option could be the initial installation, recording, then viewing the recording and adjusting the angle of the mount.

2. A good DVR should have a large battery.

Another popular myth. Nobody will remember where it came from. But you need a battery. For what? If you already have a huge source of constant power - your car. We go - the recorder is removed, there is always food. We stand there and connect the recorder to the constant power supply in the car, even without a key. Accident and power loss? To do this, some recorders have an autonomous small battery for emergency termination of recording. And how many accidents have you had where the car’s power was cut off all at once? In such accidents, it is not a fact that the recorder will remain intact.

3. The suction cup is everything. Without it you can’t even put the recorder in another car

This definitely came from mounts for gadgets on glass. The suction cup constantly falls off, especially if it is not installed on degreased glass; if the contact is loose, the camera shakes. Double-sided tape is much more reliable. And if you need to re-hang it temporarily, adhesive tape is on sale everywhere. If it’s permanent, it’s easier to buy a second mount. Not a critical factor if you approach the issue correctly correct installation on glass. Both can be good, but personally I prefer duct tape.

4. The main thing is not to run into a fake, they are all around and everywhere

Yes, a fake will not really bring anything pleasant. But it’s usually the Chinese who counterfeit. And usually for Chinese/Taiwanese brands of medium and low price categories. We have not seen any counterfeits on the market for recorders costing over 6,000 -8,000 rubles. It's easy to spot fakes - they don't shoot as well as the originals. The most expensive part of the recorder is the power board and matrix. If they are not original, they will not shoot well. You can also check by firmware, which is quite difficult to fake, especially for branded devices. And finally, check with the importer about the main criteria for the originality of the device.

5. A recorder without a certificate is a waste of money, it must be certified, otherwise the video will not be accepted in court

This story was invented by... I don’t know who. Sellers, probably. According to Russian laws, only voluntary. The court may or may not take into account the video recording, but not due to the lack of a certificate for the video device. There is no such resolution when considering cases. Some DVR manufacturers voluntarily undergo certification, but this is not prerequisite, because a household car DVR is not a video device special purpose, as video recording devices for the traffic police.

If you filmed an accident on your phone, do you think the court would demand a certificate from you for your mobile phone? If this happened, then this is an unlawful requirement, and you are not obliged to fulfill it, and the judge, due to the lack of a certificate, will refuse to include the video material in the case.

6. The recorder must be black and be able to “hide” behind the rearview mirror

It all depends on whether you are going to remove it or put it on a permanent basis. If you are filming, the color and dimensions can be any, what difference does it make to you? Buy what pleases your soul! If you leave it, then in our Russian conditions there may indeed be options with breaking the glass and removing the device. But the fact that you hide the recorder behind the mirror will not help. Are you hiding the recorder from passengers in the cabin or from yourself? No, of course, from everyone who walks near the car. And here you just need to take two points into account.

  • How invisible is the recorder from the windshield?
  • How invisible it is from the side front windows.

It helps to hide behind the mirror from the side mirrors, but from the windshield it is visible at least as well, and often even more? It all depends on the design of the body, whether the main body is located along the glass or, on the contrary, extended towards the interior.

7. A GPS recorder is a must, you can’t go anywhere without it

To each their own markers. There are 2 main reasons why anyone needs GPS in a dash cam.

  • Provide the court with the coordinates of the accident if necessary
  • View the speed at which the vehicle was moving during the analysis of the accident

Why do you immediately set yourself up for an accident and a trial? A DVR is an assistant, not an insurance policy.

Regarding the first reason. Any examination of the video recording will confirm whether what was filmed was the scene of an accident or not. The same applies to the second reason. The examination will also easily establish from the video recording how fast the vehicle was moving. when shooting. In addition, the speed readings on the video, taking into account Russian reality, may not play into your hands at all when analyzing an accident. There are often situations where you are not to blame for the accident, but you will also be fined for another violation that occurred during the accident. You were driving on green at 80 km/h, and at an intersection they broke into you and drove into you from red. He is to blame for the accident, but you will also receive a fine.

8. A recorder without internal memory is nonsense, where should I put copies of the recording when drawing up a protocol?

According to the traffic rules and amendments to the traffic rules, you are not required to provide copies of the DVR recordings when filling out the report (and we do not recommend doing this). You can present them directly to the inspector at the review group. For the legal side of the issue, you can contact search engine Google, but I assure you it is true. The only thing you must do is to indicate in the protocol that the moment of the accident was recorded by your video recording device of this brand and this model.

9. If you can’t see the numbers 15 meters away at night, we don’t need such a recorder. My phone takes much better pictures

Understand that the human eye is a very complex organ, it is adaptive. You will never get the same picture at night on video as you see with your eye. Especially with the size and cost of your DVR. Therefore, you shouldn’t expect miracles, miracles even from a premium model.

In addition, compare the DVR and the camera of a good mobile phone not worth it. These are completely different devices in purpose and characteristics, including viewing angle, constant cyclic recording under processor load, functionality, sensors, etc.

Well, think about the question - how often do you need to see car license plates on a recording? How many cases have there been in your life that were so important, where the license plate number of a car flying away from the scene of an accident at night was critical for you? Of course, this happens, no one argues. And even if it wasn’t, maybe there’s always a chance. But how often? After all, there is always a chance that a brick will fall on your head.

10. They don’t do normal things in China, Chinese registrars are bullshit

Not always. In their price category there are very good, branded devices in terms of price/quality ratio. And don’t think, all expensive models costing 14,000 rubles have no problems. You can always get to the bottom of it. Before everything. There are just significantly fewer of them and they are not very critical.

China is a manufacturing country. There is work force and power, territory. It's cheap to produce and assemble electronics there. The most important thing here is quality control. Not all Chinese electronics are bad and unreliable. Especially at the price it is offered. Trust reviews and opinions of consumers - this is the main guarantee of a good choice.

Conclusions:

  • Before choosing a DVR specifically for yourself, approve the list of mandatory (important) and secondary selection criteria
  • Based on the opinions of owners and reviews, select the models you need
  • Before purchasing, consult a specialist consultant in the store and make sure that this is what you need
  • sell your model if you are not satisfied with something and buy a new one
