How much toe in millimeters is y x 60. How to calculate tires

Instructions

Look at the nameplate, in doorway on the driver's side, recommended tire size. Write it down on paper or remember it. Find wheels of this size in a car dealership and measure them using a tape measure. external diameter tires. Write this value down on paper. Drive the car into the pit and turn the front wheels completely: first in one direction and then in the other direction. Use a ruler or tape measure to measure the distance from the tire to the nearest structural element and write down these values on paper.

When choosing the tires you like, take into account the diameter of the future rims, and, depending on the size of the future tire, select the width of the rims. The required wheel width is equal to the tread width. It may be easier to find a disc with a slightly larger diameter and the width you need. For example, take 14-inch wheels instead of 13 and choose tires for them. This option will be even more advantageous in terms of durability, but it will be more expensive.

Try to buy tires dimensions which will be approximately the same as the recommended ones. For example, the manufacturer recommends tires with dimensions 175/70R13 86S. 175 is the overall width of the tire in millimeters, /70 is the height of the tire profile as a percentage of the width, R-13 is the mounting diameter corresponding to the diameter of the rims, 86 is the load factor, S is the speed index. It is worth noting that the overall width of the tire may differ from the tread width, so if you want a wider tread, then pay attention to this feature. Do not buy tires with low load and speed coefficients.

If you want to put R16 wheels on your car instead of R13, find tires of the appropriate width. Since there are no 175mm wide R16 tires, it is more realistic to find tires 215mm wide or wider. Look at your notes and calculate how many centimeters you have left. Increasing the tire width by 1 cm more than recommended reduces the measured distance between the wheel and the body by 5 mm. Please note that it is not advisable to increase the wheel diameter by more than 3 cm, as this will lead to increased fuel consumption and a deterioration in the traction characteristics of the machine. Select suitable tires and measure their diameter using a tape measure. Compare with recommended wheel diameter. If the recommended dimensions of the future wheel are exceeded within your calculated norm, you can safely buy the selected tires. The speed and load coefficient in this case will significantly exceed the recommended one, which will have a beneficial effect on the durability of the rubber.

In order to choose the right tires for the wheels, you need to know certain parameters, failure to comply with which will seriously worsen the car’s performance on the road. Since the tire fits on the rim of the disk, the width of the profile must be commensurate with it. Let us immediately note that, despite the widespread last years tuning, automakers categorically do not recommend this. After all, if the sizes of the wheels and tires vary greatly, the contact patch will not be even, which means that control may get out of control.

In general, the issue of matching tires and wheels can be considered from two sides. The first is the selection of tires and wheels based on the manufacturer’s recommendations, and the second is this fitment. Fitment is the study of the fit of the tire on the rim and the position of the wheels relative to the wheel arches, which includes negative camber, low seating and other delights that we will not talk about, since we consider it more important to tell how to choose the right one from the point of view of safety and comfort. tires to rims.

To choose the right tires for the wheels, you need to know the markings of the wheels.

Ideally, that is, to be sure of safety, the PCD of the disk (the diameter of the circle of the centers of the mounting holes) cannot be changed. In extreme cases, the sizes of the wheels and tires may differ slightly from each other, but then bolts with eccentrics are used for fastening, which allow you to install wheels with PCD 100 mm on cars with PCD 98 mm. However, it is worth noting that the maximum difference in displacement should not exceed 2 mm, and ideally, the matching of tires and wheels should be one hundred percent.

The sizes of the wheels and tires must also match in their central hole, but if for certain reasons this is not possible, a mounting ring (also known as a spacer ring) will come to the rescue. The installation ring has an outer diameter equal to diameter holes in the disk, and inner diameter corresponds to the diameter of the car hub. If the installation ring is installed correctly, then the driving characteristics will not change. It is worth noting that stamped discs do not have mounting rings. They are installed only on .

The disk markings do not indicate the maximum load ( MAX LOAD), you can find out this parameter either in the passport that some manufacturers of domestic wheels attach to their products, or you can look for this information on the website of the wheel manufacturer. This information is not very important, since manufacturers usually make discs with a safety margin. But, if for some reason you decide to put, say, wheels on a jeep for passenger car, then the maximum disk load will be important parameter. And if you do not take it into account, the wheel may not withstand the load and become deformed, even falling into a small hole.

In addition, even if the sizes of tires and wheels match in all respects, there is still a risk that the wheel will not fit on the car. The reason for this is the so-called X-factor, when the disc rests on the suspension parts or caliper, which is due to the form of stamping or casting. Therefore, we recommend that you first try it on before beading a tire onto a wheel.

Good afternoon, dear readers. Today I want to immediately answer many questions related to wheel tire sizes. Many of my readers do not understand what they mean and why they are needed at all! Today I will try to explain in simple and understandable language what tire sizes on cars mean...

Wheel tire sizes contain a lot of useful information, you just need to be able to read it. Without this information, you will not be able to choose the right tires for your car; they simply will not fit in size. Although now the bodies of many brands have special plates with recommendations, you just read them and go to the store to buy the same ones. However, such signs are not always available and you need to determine the tire dimensions yourself! A small clarification, I will only talk about overall dimensions, there have already been many articles about other characteristics, the links will definitely be below.

I will tell you about my winter wheels, KAMA EURO 519, as an example; it should be noted that they are in no way inferior to their foreign counterparts. An informative read.

To begin with, the overall dimensions

My wheel size is R16 205/55 , these are the so-called overall dimensions. Rubber is considered low profile (more details).

The notorious letter R

Many people mistakenly think (to be honest, I thought so too) that the first English letter R means the abbreviation “RADIUS”! But that's not true! The letter R means radial tire, read the article -. This is a method of arranging rubber and metal cord during production. Of course, you can also see the letter D in front (diagonal), but such a designation is now really rare. In fact, this letter has nothing to do with size. Let's move on...

Disc diameter

Second digit (in in this case we have 16) indicates the diameter of the hole in the rubber, or which disc this rubber can be put on. We have 16, which means it’s 16 inches! Remember that this size is always indicated in inches (1 inch = 25.4 mm). if we calculate our size, it turns out - 16 X 25.4 mm = 406.4 mm. The disc cannot be larger or smaller than the diameter of the wheel; you simply won’t fit it. That is, if the tires are 16 (406.4 mm), then the disk should be 16 (406.4 mm).

Width

A large number almost always characterizes the width. In this case, this figure is 205. It is measured in millimeters, that is, the width of my wheel is 205 mm. The wider the tires, the wider the track, which increases cross-country ability and traction.

Cord height

This is a smaller number that is applied through the fraction. In my case it is 55, measured as a percentage of the width (from the larger number). What does it mean? To find the height (in my case) you need to calculate 55% of 205 mm. Thus it turns out:

205 X 0.55 (55%) = 112.75 mm

This is the cord height of our rubber, also important indicator, look at the figure.

Overall wheel height

Let's calculate the total height of my wheel. What happens.

Rubber cord 112.75 X 2 (since the height is on both sides, top and bottom) = 225.5 mm

For a 16-inch drive = 406.4

Total - 406.4 + 225.5 = 631.9

Thus, my wheel is a little more than half a meter high, namely 0.631 meters

Let's look at the most common tires that are used by most cars, there are three of them - R13, R14 and R15

Tire sizesR13

The most common of all isR13175/70 such ones are installed on many models of the domestic VAZ (although they are now being phased out).

What happens:

R13 – diameter 13 inches (multiply by 25.4) = 330.2 mm

Width 175

Height - 70% of 175 = 122.5

Total - (122.5 X 2) + 330.2 = 574.2 mm

Tire sizesR14

One of the most common ones isR14175/65 are also installed on domestic VAZ models of more recent years of production, such as Priora, Kalina, Granta, as well as on some inexpensive (popular) foreign cars - for example Renault Logan, Kia RIO, Hyundai Solaris, etc.

What happens:

R14 – diameter 14 inches (multiply by 25.4) = 355.6 mm

Width - 175

Height – 65% of 175 = 113.75

Overall dimensions – (113.75 X 2) + 355.6 mm = 583.1 mm

Tire sizesR15

The most common example is -R15 195/65, installed on many foreign cars of the (popular) class, but in high trim levels.

What happens:

R15 – diameter 15 inches (multiply by 25.4) = 381 mm

Width 195

Height – 65% of 195 = 126.75

Total – (126.75 X 2) + 381 = 634.5 mm

As you can see, it is not that difficult to calculate the tire size.

Of course there is another one on the wheel useful information, I already wrote articles about her below. I’ll list them point by point for you, it’s useful and interesting to read:

In general, read the section - there is much more information there. As you can see, all this information can be read from a tire, sometimes you can’t even believe it!

You may need such a calculator if you want to install instead standard tires or similar disks, but of a different size. With its help, you can visually represent dimensional changes and only then interpret them for a specific car. At the same time, the calculator is not a tool for selecting tires and wheels, since it does not contain a database of manufacturers.

When replacing wheels and tires, taking into account geometric data obtained from tire calculator, it wouldn’t hurt to take a few measurements yourself. Firstly, the distance from the suspension to the wheel surface is inside, as well as from the shock absorber cup to the tread surface. Secondly, from the wing, as well as steering rods to the tread surface. Wherein geometric parameters The new wheel assembly should not greatly exceed the size of the standard tires and wheels. Otherwise, the vehicle may behave unstable.

A few basic rules to remember when replacing tires and wheels.

  1. The tread of summer tires typically has a depth of 0.8-1 cm;
  2. When installing discs with a larger diameter than standard ones, it is necessary to reduce the offset amount - for every inch of height, 3 mm of offset;
  3. Often the hub holes on discs that are not original have a larger diameter. Therefore, when installing them, you need to use special rings for fixation;
  4. In the case where the hole on the disk is smaller than the hub mounts, it is strictly forbidden to drill them out, as well as grind the hub itself;
  5. Correct selection non-original wheels using a calculator will allow you to maintain the driving characteristics of the car;
  6. If you are not sure about the compatibility of tires or wheels with your car, it is better not to install, or seek help from specialists.

Car owners use a tire calculator to select tires and wheels of the appropriate size. All calculations are performed online. The user does not have to deal with lengthy, incomprehensible calculations. The application is multifunctional, since the motorist will be able to understand how to change the dimensions of the wheel, taking into account changes in the sizes of tires and rims. Let's look at the features of using the service.

Tire calculator functionality

The tire selection calculator can help you select tires that are suitable for a specific car in size and characteristics. Vehicle owners resort to the service when it is time to replace tires and wheels on their vehicles. In order not to waste time on meaningless “changes of shoes” and checks, use the offered online service. Tire calculator features:

  • you can calculate tire sizes;
  • the service provides various parameters - wheel diameters, changes in the height of clearance between the road and the car (clearance), widening of the track;
  • assistance in converting inches to millimeters or vice versa, using American and European size charts.

Tire calculator was designed to speed up the selection of tires, making the procedure much easier. Since every car owner is faced with difficult choices, online calculators very quickly gained popularity among users.

How to use a tire calculator

There are several tips that will help you use the tire size calculator for its intended purpose. Step-by-step instruction consists of the following steps:

  1. In the form you will need to enter the size of the tires installed on the car, as well as those that you would like to install.
  2. The user will see a special table with the calculation results. From this data you can find out what tires are needed for a particular vehicle.
  3. After selecting tires, you can proceed to calculating the size of the wheels. Here you will need to specify exact data - the maximum/minimum width of the disk installed on the car. The service will perform all calculations automatically.
  4. If you need to convert inches to millimeters, you can use an online converter. This action will allow you to find analogues in American and European sizes. Comparison using a tire calculator will be as accurate as possible, since all the necessary information is included in the online service database.

The general selection procedure is very simple, but the car owner will definitely be required to enter initial data. The parameters must be as accurate as possible so that there are no errors or inaccuracies in subsequent results.
